Michael Pioggia has been a CAP COM member since his teen years, when his father, John, set up a Youth Account. So, when the time came to buy his first house, Michael turned to our trusted mortgage experts. Buying a first home is exciting. It’s the start of a new chapter. At CAP COM, we help families make smart home-buying choices that produce benefits down the line. For Michael and his family, it started with a mortgage for their East Greenbush home and evolved into a refinancing plan that is now delivering $250 in monthly savings. On Page 9, Michael describes our Mortgage Division as “trustworthy, accurate and timely.”

As our mortgage options for first-time homebuyers have evolved, CAP COM’s guiding purpose has remained the same: An unbridled commitment to making sure that everything we do benefits every member, every time, every day.

That purpose is evident in the story of CAP COM Member Marissa Harris. As you’ll learn on Page 4, Marissa joined CAP COM because of her father. She was seeking an Auto Loan and heeded her father’s advice to “go to CAP COM.” “It started with the car loan, then Savings and then Checking. Now, I do all my banking here. I trust you guys,” Marissa tells us. Our unique brand of member service means that we always work for a member’s best interests. That service is what has made CAP COM a family tradition and leads members like Marissa to say: “I will never go anywhere else.” On Page 2, you’ll read about the Hersey family, who needed help planning for college. A year ago, they met with College Specialist Kim Donah. Today, they have several acceptance letters in hand and a tuition financing plan. Mother Nancy Hersey says, “We wouldn’t be where we are without CAP COM.” As our member stories show, CAP COM is truly unmatched by any financial institution. Give us a call or drop by one of our convenient branch locations today!

Sincerely,

Paula A. StoperaPresident/CEO

‘CAP COMsteered us

the right way’

Rebecca Hersey is working to be valedictorian at Salem Central High School. She’s already been accepted at Ithaca College and SUNY Brockport. Parents Kenny and Nancy are proud. But, they’re also thankful for CAP COM’s help. “We wouldn’t be where we are without CAP COM. The College Bound Program is a blessing to Capital Region families,” Nancy said. Last spring, the family set up a Saturday morning meeting with College Specialist Kim Donah. The meeting delivered a step-by-step plan for Rebecca’s

college journey and a home refinancing plan to save money and help pay for tuition. “We came out of that meeting thinking, ‘We can do this,’” Kenny recalled. The family has a low-rate Home Equity Loan that features lower monthly payments and a five-year draw period for college costs. “I tell friends that our Credit Union is leading us down the whole path. CAP COM steered us the right way,” Nancy said.

President/CEO Paula A. Stopera will be honored with an award for dedicated service to the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s upcoming Annual Dinner in Albany. At the dinner on March 10, Paula will receive the Arthur R. Kapner Spirit of the Chamber Award, which is named in honor of Arthur R. Kapner. Kapner died in 2004 after five decades of volunteer service to the organization. “I am humbled by the Chamber’s award. The Credit Union’s purpose of benefitting every member, every time, every day goes beyond our four walls. We are passionate about helping our Chamber and community partners strengthen our businesses and community,” Paula said.

Also at the dinner, the Chamber will honor Walter L. Robb, Ph.D., former senior vice president of research and development for General Electric, and pay special tribute to the late Donald Led Duke, chairman of BBL Companies. Nearly 1,000 members of the region’s business community attend the Annual Dinner at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.

Latino New York Magazine ProfileThe January 2011 issue of Latino New York magazine featured a familiar face. President/CEO Paula A. Stopera is profiled in the monthly bilingual publication. The story highlights Paula’s Credit Union leadership and her community work with groups like the Capital District YMCA’s Black and Latino Achievers Program, which helps local youths pursue higher education and career goals. Paula serves as chair of the YMCA’s Board of Directors. “In talking with Latino New York about our Credit Union and community volunteer work, I wanted to shed light on CAP COM’s unbridled commitment to its members and community,” Paula said. About 5,000 free copies of the magazine are distributed each month around the Capital Region. Find a web link to the Spanish and English magazine online at www.capcomfcu.org or read the magazine at our branch locations. Magazine editors wrote that the issue “is devoted to leadership and recognizes individuals in our community who not only are consummate professionals but also use their leadership positions to support activities that improve the lives of others.”

First-time homebuyers!

Q: Where do I start?

A: Buying a first home is an exciting adventure. Start by working with people you trust and determine what you can afford. At CAP COM, we’ll start with a mortgage pre-approval meeting. That’s when our top-notch lending experts will review your credit history and target a Home Loan with an affordable monthly payment. Most first-time buyers will consider government loans and conventional mortgages. A government-backed FHA Loan can offer down payments as low as 3.5 percent. It’s a great option for many of our members.

Q: Is it better to rent or own?

A: With prices at historic lows, you may find a mortgage payment matches monthly rent. First, ask an expert if you qualify for a mortgage. Unlike rental payments, a home is an investment that can improve your credit standing and lending options down the road. Our Mortgage Division will walk first-time homebuyers through the entire buying process step by step. We offer an easy online mortgage application and service that benefits every member, every time, every day. Contact us today!

One couple’s journey from buying a first home to a money-saving ‘refi’ plan

Trust is important to Michael and Jennifer Pioggia. That’s part of the reason the East Greenbush couple turned to CAP COM’s mortgage experts in 2003 as first-time homebuyers.

“My dad is a long-time CAP COM member. I’ve had a Credit Union VISA® Card since I can remember. So, we took CAP COM’s first-time homebuyers class and soon got started with the Mortgage Division,” Michael said.

It didn’t end there.

“Recently, we worked with the mortgage experts on a refinancing plan that is saving us over $250 a month. They’ve always been trustworthy, accurate and timely,” Michael said.

After attending CAP COM’s first-time homebuyers workshop in 2003, the couple set up a meeting with mortgage expert Dave Stagnitti. As a self-described “numbers guy,” Michael arrived with mortgage estimates in hand.

“Dave had all the numbers broken down. It was great when our numbers matched,” Jennifer recalled.

Soon after, the couple bought a single-family home near the East Greenbush schools, where they live today with their two young children.

As mortgage rates recently reached record lows, the couple called CAP COM for refinancing options. Lending expert Jessica Brate set up a refinancing plan.

“Once again, CAP COM knocked it out of the park. CAP COM’s Mortgage Division made our concept a reality,” Michael said.

Planning your legacy

Sometimes a will isn’t enough. Naming beneficiaries for life insurance policies, as well as employer-sponsored retirement plans and IRAs, is also important for estate planning. At CAP COM Financial, our experienced Insurance Advisors will help you make informed decisions to benefit your family after you’re gone.

Life insurance policiesLife insurance death benefits are income tax free for all beneficiaries. With a beneficiary designation form, insurance proceeds can be distributed with few legal hurdles. For many, a spouse is the best choice of beneficiary.

However, setting up a beneficiary trust to manage and invest death-benefit proceeds can help. Trusts deliver stewardship and objectivity that a spouse with little financial experience may lack.

Retirement plans and IRAsBy law, spouses must be the primary beneficiary of a 401(k) or profit-sharing account. In some cases, spouses waive that right and allow a child to step in as beneficiary. For single people, a tax-free transfer to a beneficiary’s IRA is a smart plan.

“Get peace of mind with a smart estate plan. Meet with us and set up a plan today.”

Tips for naming beneficiaries

Consider age Many policies and plans will not directly transfer assets to minors until a trustee or guardian is approved by a court.

Who will manage assets?Perhaps a trust set up in the person’s name would be better than a direct transfer. Trusts feature objective, experienced investment management.

Employer-sponsored retirement plans Unless waived by a spouse, the law requires a spouse to be the primary beneficiary of the account.

Contingent beneficiaries Should something happen to your primary beneficiary, the contingent beneficiary would receive your assets.
