Our Lollapalooza Other cities have their parties. Mil-waukee has the fabulous Summer-fest, Miami’s Music Week, Chi-cago’s Lollapalooza and of course New Orleans has Mardi Gras. I have been to most of these and I can attest that our Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is The lollapaloo-za.

Oh yeah this is the world’s largest bar-b-cue, beer, whiskey and country music extravagan-za, but the founding fathers of the rodeo had other ideas when they kicked off this event in 1932. They decided that charity and educa-tion of our children would be the two main beneficiaries. Since its’ inception the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has donated an astounding 330 million dollars to educate Texas students.

This year alone there will be 108 scholar-ships awarded totaling between $16,000 -$18,000 dollars per scholarship.

Martina McBride (above) and George Strait will anchor this year’s Rodeo

6

Page 7: March/April Intown

New charities added this year as bene-ficiaries of the Rodeo’s success include American Festival for the Arts, Children’s Museum of Houston, Cristo rey Jesuit Col-lege Preparatory and The Memorial Park Conservancy due to the massive devasta-tion to the trees in Memorial Park.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has donated an as-tounding 330 million dollars to educate Texas students.

” Could anyone in 1932 have envisioned that in this year’s opening parade that a black head football coach named Kevin Sum-lin from Texas A&M University would be the Grand Marshall of the trail ride. Ending in downtown Houston, the parade was welcomed by hundreds of thousands of denizens who helped kick of the 2013 annual rodeo. There were over 3,000 trail riders traveling a combined total of nearly 1,800 miles and from as far away as Reynosa, Mexico.

A relative newcomer to the Rodeo festiv-ities and what would have undoubtedly been a surprise evolution to the event’s forefathers is The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s, Rodeo Uncorked Inter-national Wine Competition Roundup and Best Bites Competition. This year featured over 2,800 wines. The Grand Champion Wine prize this year went to the Alexander Valley Vineyard for the Cyrus Alexan-der Valley 2008. Most of Houston’s top restaurants and caterers now offer their fare for tastings. This year’s winner for Top Food Popular Choice award went to Royer’s Round Top Cafe, who has been to the winner’s circle in this event twice before. Runner-up in the food event was Jonathan’s The Rub.

ConocoPhillips Annual Rodeo Run has become a rodeo mainstay and had near-ly 15,000 runners this year. Since it’s inception the race has donated all of the proceeds which now totals over four mil-lion dollars.

The number of volunteers for this little lollapalooza now totals over 27,000 strong, and shows what most Houstonians know. Houston is the most underrated city in America and won’t be for long. For more go to www.rodeohouston.com

If you were to guess who the top three music artists were, it may be a surprise to find this year’s feature music attraction at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on the list. The number three music artist with most gold and platinum records behind Elvis Presley (The King) and The Beatles, Texan country legend George Strait rides into to Houston for the last time while on his The Cowboy Rides Away Tour. If you believe that I have some oceanfront property in Arizona.

As did Jeremy Lin of Houston Rockets and New York Knicks bas-ketball fame, George Strait made the most of his playing opportunity when he was a fill in due to sickness. After the injury that befell the Knicks which forced them to play then little known backcourt player, Jeremy Lin, Lin went on to have one of the most successful seasons in pro basketball last year. Like Lin, Strait’s meteoric rise to stardom can be attributed to the luck of the draw. Houston Rodeo chairman, Leroy Shafer remembers having to “fly in a replacement act only an hour be-fore and debuting to a crowd of over 30,000 people at the Astrodome in 1983,” when Eddie Rabbitt, the scheduled performer, was sick and couldn’t perform. Strait known for barroom ballads, honky tonk and western swing was a huge hit at the rodeo and he finally had arrived.

Strait’s first single, “Unwound” was a hit in 1981 and he never looked back. His seventh album and most famous song “Ocean Front Prop-erty” was released by MCA records in 1987. The record has been ranked as a Top 40 Greatest Country Albums of all time by Country Music Television. In 2000, Strait was named artist of the decade and won a Grammy Award for the album Troubadour which helped him surpassing Conway Twitty’s mark of 68.5 million albums sold.

George Harvey Strait was born May 18,1952 in Poteet, Texas just 20 miles outside of San Antonio. He was raised on a cattle farm by his father after his mother divorced and moved away with his sister. His first band was a rock and roll garage band. Strait eloped with his high school sweetheart and in 1971 enlisted in the US Army. Afterwards he attended Southwest Texas State and began playing lead with a group called Ace In The Hole. After a couple of failed attempts to land a recording contract in Nashville, his wife urged him to give it one more try and it was then that his song “Unwound “ went to number four on the charts and MCA Records signed him.

Strait lost his daughter in a tragic car accident when she was just 13. The boy driving who survived the crash was going to be charged with negligent homicide when Strait intervened and simply said it was an accident. He and his only son George Strait Jr,who goes by Bubba are both members in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and partner in team roping competitions. He and his wife and son live out-side San Marcos on a ranch and as per usual declined an interview for this story as he does for most interviews, which has added to this

legendary singer song-writer’s mystique.

Strait joins country leg-ends Gene Autry, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Elvis Presley, Charley Pride and Roy Rogers on the Star Trail of Fame at The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

up, you are going to have assembled some depth on the team. Once the guys have proven that they can play, then it gives you some pieces to trade for things you don't have. Jeff is doing a great job at that.

Granato: I know Drayton [McClane, previous Astros owner] was very involved when a trade was on the table. He had to be sold on the trade before he approved it. Are you that involved or do you trust Jeff?Crane: Jeff 's team makes the trades. He has a budget and he stays within the budget. We are certainly aware of the trades but it's his decision and he will be held accountable for those decisions. I did tell him when he was trading with Oakland, this was his chance to beat the Moneyball guy, Billy Bean.

Granato: Isn’t the Oakland A’s model a pretty good one?Crane: Yeah, they’ve done fantastic. In this situation, they were needing a shortstop, so they were willing to give up some of the player they did. They want to win this year because they have a very good team so that piece was important to them at that price. Even at a relatively lower payroll of $60-70 million dollars, they are going to be very competitive. The payroll isn't always the leading indicator on how a team will turn out. What Bo’s trying to do with the “chemistry” is very important to the team, as well.

Sean Pendergast: Obviously, you guys have scaled back on the payroll, but the day will come when investing in the payroll is the prudent thing to do. When will that time come for the Astros? Are we two or three years away? What will trigger that?Jim Crane: I think it will become obvious once the team gets competitive, in contention, or close to contention. [In that scenario] we might need a certain position player to round out the team, and when the time comes, we're certainly ready to react to that. We hope it cones sooner than later. This year, signing a bunch of free agents with the nucleus we had wouldn’t have made much financial sense. Every dollar we spend, we want to make sure that we get value for it. It could be the middle of the season or it could be next year, but we hope it's quicker than later. Jeff has stockpiled talent at our minor league system, which was ranked nearly at the bottom last year of the league; now it ranks fourth. Every time you see a team in that position, they usually make a run for the playoffs.

John Granato: Jeff also picked up some veteran players like Carlos Peña, Rick Ankiel, Erik Bedard. So you are getting some stop-gap guys. It will be interesting to see how they respond. What area gives you the most hope?Jim Crane: When you look at our pitching depth, I think our starting pitching will be much better this year. Roger Clemens has given a commitment to work with our young guys. If one of these guys pick up a split-finger fastball or another pitch, it could be the difference in their career. They are all hard-throwers and any of them could turn into 20-game winners before you blink.

Listen to John Granato & Sean Pendergast weekdays 7-11am on 1560-AM, Houston’s flagship home for Yahoo! Sports Radio.

John Granato: What are your observations from Spring Training in Kissimmee on your Houston Astros?Jim Crane: Bo [Porter] has them fired up and working hard. We’re excited. We hope to play better this year with what Jeff [Luhnow] has put together, and with what Bo has put together. You'll see a lot more intensity, a lot more focus, and hopefully these guys can start playing at a very high major league level. We'll develop a nucleus and get good pretty quick.

Granato: It's going to take awhile to develop the guys that you have been accumulating with all the trades, but we spoke with Phil Garner, and he loves the Chris Carter trade. It's still early to tell, but it seems that the plan is coming together well.Crane: We told people what we were going to do last year and I think Jeff has stayed very close to that plan. Anytime you can accumulate more assets for someone that may not be with us long term, or if he thinks he has an advantage, he's going to make a trade. I think he made a good trade acquiring Carter and picking up some other good pieces. When you can trade 3 [players] for one, you do that all day long. When you look

Growing up with Jimmy Swaggart and Jer-ry Lee Lewis as cousins, music was bound to rub off on you. Even though Mickey Gilley’s career started in the shadows of his famous cousins, Gilley’s own legend grew with the opening of the club billed as the “world’s largest honky tonk.” The club and the music inspired the movie Urban Cowboy and today the legend lives on in his new home in Branson, Missouri.

Born in 1936 , Mickey Gilley was born in Natchez, Mississippi and later moved to New Orleans , where he and his cousins played boogie and gospel music. His cousin, the infamous Jerry Lee Lewis, had hit the top of the charts in the early fifties and in 1958 Gilley recorded “Call Me Shorty” which sold well. In the sixties, he began playing bars and clubs and in 1967 recorded Down The Line, his first album. Gilley had managed to garner a large following in Pasadena, Texas, where he would later open his famous club, Gilley’s. Other Gilley hits to follow included “City Lights”, “Bring it on Home to Me” and “She’s Pulling Me Back Again.”

Gilley’s honky tonk was opened in 1970 and little did he know what was in store for him. By 1974 Mickey Gilley was creeping out from his cousins shadows and recorded “Room Full Of Roses” that went to the top of the country charts and made the top 50 on the pop charts. The club and Gilley’s music career took off after an article in Esquire magazine entitled “The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy and America’s Search for True Grit.”

In 1980, the movie Urban Cowboy was re-leased by Paramount Pictures, starring John Travolta and Debra Winger. His remake of the song “Stand By Me” rocketed to the top of the country charts and pop charts as well. In 1983 Gilley had three number one country hits including “Fool For your Love,” “Paradise Tonight” and “Talk To Me.” The club became a launching pad for country music’s biggest stars.

George Strait, Randy Travis and the Judds all performed at Gilley’s. It was a very good ride and in 1990 the mechanical bull, El Toro stopped bucking and the party ended when Gilley’s honky tonk burned to the ground.

Gilley’s last Top 40 hit was “She Reminded Me of You” and it went all the way to 27th on the charts.

Gilley has recorded 17 number one country 5015 Westheimer Road

hits and today can be found in his newhome in Branson, Missouri, where he still performs today despite a terrible accident a few years ago that made him unable to play the piano.

In 2002, along with Swaggart and Lewis, Gilley was inducted into the Delta Music Hall of Fame. He also has his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Holly-wood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. No longer under the shadows of his famous cousins.

Jerry Lee Lewis was a huge influence because I saw what he was doing and knew that I can do it too, so I threw my hat in the ring. People started accusing me of copy-ing him but it didn’t matter to me because I enjoyed what I was doing. The tipping points in my career which

fueled my success was opening Gilley’s and starting a television show and later the film the Urban Cowboy with John Travolta, be-cause after the film it became an infomercial for Gilley’s.

I opened the Mickey Gilley Theatre in Branson because it was becoming a country music mecca and I got to the point in my ca-reer where I could stay in one place instead of taking the music to the people. When I built my Theatre it allowed people to come to Branson to hear the music. I didn’t write any of my music, all of it was written by other writers.

Some of the artists I enjoy are Alan Jack-son, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, The Judds, and Shania Twain to name a few.

The most interesting or little known part of your life was being the host of the television show, revising the old Gilley’s place with a new look and doing it out of Branson at Gilley’s Texas Cafe with my co host Delena Ditto. Also we are still continuing our brand across the county in Durant Oklahoma, Dallas Texas, Las Vegas Nevada, and Holly-wood Florida.

I was paralyzed from the neck down in 2009, but made a miraculous recovery in less than a year’s time. I wanted to do the two things I love in life and that is playing music and playing golf and I’m trying to get my health back so I can do both.

“What is the first step in a modern or any makeover?” Gather photos of what you like. Decide on a budget. Inventory what you already have to see what might fit. If remodeling or build-ing is part of the process, definitely obtain plans/blueprints. Research registered designers preferably through ASID that have worked with the style you are wanting.

What do you see as the biggest mistakes made by amateur de-signers like myself? Overkill, not knowing a space and many times the layout is incorrect. Understanding how to effectively use a budget, whether it be spending more on a specific item that would make a space or limiting the need of certain items.

Kitchens are generally the most often remodeled areas in the house. What trends do you see with modern kitchen de-sign? Glass mosaics for backslashes-especially geometric pat-terns,Stainless steel and quartz countertops- especially those that mimic onyx. Both have their efficiencies. Metal has the feel of a chef’s kitchen and both materials have the ease of cleaning. Cabinets have clean simple lines with a lot of detail inside. So much is put into how the space and storage is used. Appliances are also multi- functional and integrated with the cabinets. Stainless is still strong but black or white glass fronts are popular.

What techniques or ideas do you have for someone on a limited budget? Modern design calls for very clean, unencumbered choices and placement. The old saying of “Less is more,” rings true in creating a modern aesthetic . Try not to finish everything all at once, it is better to map out what you need and spread out additions over a period of time.

What are your favorite wall and floor coverings? Porcelain tile, preferably European. Textures, sizes, colors and patterns, that are very unique, yet very easy to maintain. Maya Romanoff Wall finishes are superb. Tile is also an excel-lent long term solution for wall finishes, specifically collections available through La Nova and the Porcelanosa Brand.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

So far this year, the fiscal cliff has been a real headline grabber, almost eclips-ing what is surely welcome news for investors planning for retirement. That news—a 2013 increase in contribu-tion limits for most types of retirement plans—enables millions of investors to save more for retirement and minimize their taxes at the same time.

It’s been a few years—2008, to be exact—since contribution limits for individual retirement arrangements (IRAs) were last increased by the IRS. That’s why the bump up in contribution limits, effective on January 1, 2013, is especially good news for anyone who has an IRA and wants to make the most of this tax-advantaged way to save for retirement.

Nor have the millions of Americans with defined contribution plans been left out. As it did with IRAs, the IRS also in-creased maximum contribution amounts for 401(k)s, 403(b)s and other plans, effective January 1, 2013.

Take a look at the numbers:

When it increased contribution limits, the IRS also tweaked other retirement plan details, such as eligibility, compensation limits and deductibility, for 2013. Best advice: check in with your wealth advisor, CPA and perhaps your tax attorney to determine how these changes might affect you.

Are you saving enough?

Although a $500 annual increase in the contribution limit this year might seem modest, those additional dollars may significantly add to your retirement assets over time.

That is especially critical these days because a longer life expec-tancy, vanishing company pensions and sobering questions about Social Security put the responsibility of retirement planning square-ly on each individual. We all have a duty to take care of ourselves down the road, because we can’t absolutely count on traditional sources such as Social Security.

So, of every dollar that you make, you really need to put at least 12 cents of it into your retirement savings each year—no ifs, ands or buts. Given that benchmark, though, many people are falling short.

Save it and keep it

There is really no special secret to saving for retirement. It’s just what you have to do. You have homeowners insurance on your home to protect that asset. Paying into a retirement plan is what you have to do to protect your retirement. If you can automate those retirement savings, that’s even better. Pay yourself first; it can’t get much easier than that.

But being diligent about preserving those funds for retirement is equally important. It’s very tempting to borrow money from or take money out of your retirement fund for other things; after all, it’s right there. People always say, “I have plenty of time to make that up later.” Not only is that difficult or impossible to do, but in many cases, early withdrawals can trigger penalties and taxes—putting you further behind financially.

So, just because you can make a loan or withdrawal from your retirement account doesn’t make it a good idea. If you want to put your kids through college or need to buy a car or a house, you sim-ply can’t rob your retirement to meet those goals.

How do you get started?

For people still sitting on the sidelines or fretting about whether or not they are doing enough for retirement, the advice is: Get going now rather than later. Take the first step by talking to a knowl-edgeable wealth advisor who can help you work through your own worries, needs, circumstances and goals to find a retirement saving solution right for you.

Conditioning yourself to contribute adequately to your retirement account and preserving those funds just for retirement relieves a lot of stress you may be feeling these days about retirement.

David exemplifies excellence - not just meeting expectations, but exceeding them. This is the smartest, hardest working Realtor we’ve ever met. He helped us sell and buy in a short time window, and he exhibited great patience with our numerous home tours. When he takes you to a house, you’ll feel like the only thing that matters is you and your needs. He also excels in communication- online, over the phone, and in person. We will use him again-IF we ever move again!!! 10 stars for David! August, 2012

We had only four days on the ground in Houston to find a house. David helped us pinpoint neigh-borhoods ahead of time and prepare a shortlist. He focused on us while we were in town house hunting, and we were able to make an offer and sign a contract on a beautiful house before we left town. We were very impressed with his level of knowledge and his patience with us during a stressful time. January, 2012

David Young gets it done. Selling a home can be a nerve wracking experience, but David’s accessibility, market knowledge, negotiating skills, and calm demeanor will wipe those nerves away. When you see how good your house looks once it’s posted on HAR and in his marketing materials, you’ll wonder why you’re even selling it! You won’t regret partnering with David Young. November, 2012
