THE JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHY OF CHUCK STEWART GALLERY RECEPTION: THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016

in the

Chuck Stewart has been an eyewitness to 20th century American social, cultural and musi-cal history. He photographed over 2,000 album covers for record labels large and smallincluding Mercury, Argo, Impulse, Chess, Atlantic, Columbia Records and more.

On his website, Stewart describes his work, “In my portraits and improvisational shots, I’ve triedto unveil the soul of the artists I photographed and communicate the essence of their craft. That’swhy they trusted me: James Brown, John Coltrane, Candido, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, JudyGarland, Billie Holiday, Quincy Jones, Machito, Max Roach, Frank Sinatra, and many more. Youknow their names, but few people have known and photographed them as I have. My pictures andI have many stories to tell.”

His striking black and white photographs of iconic jazz artists line the walls of the WBGO Gallerythrough March 31. A gallery reception celebrating this extraordinary exhibit takes place Thursday,March 24, 6-8PM at WBGO, 54 Park Place in Newark.

side to his story yet untold, in part becauseillness prevented him from ever telling it —how he developed a unique compositionalmethodology and anchored the Philly jazzcommunity for years with a group called TheForerunners. Now that Jymie is 90, his sonMike Merritt has taken it upon himself to res-urrect this music—the music that would ulti-mately lead him to become a professionalbassist himself with the Conan O’Brienband— and put the band back together.
