PEDIATRICSLetters of Thanks
! Dr. Dorothy Shulman wanted to pass along a letter that was recently sent by a parent concerning the care his son received from members of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
Dr. Iyer,
I wanted to thank you for the care you gave my son, this week. Also, the sensitivity and professionalism you showed my wife and I is greatly appreciated. Obviously the diagnosis of (our son) having type 1 was devastating to us. Since the birth of our first child, I have hoped never to have to walk into All Children’s for any reason. Monday, my worst fears came true and my little boy needed serious treatment. I am very thankful that you, your staff, and All Children’s, were there for my son. The facilities and the quality people that work there are very inspiring. You and your staff made this event more understandable and far less scary than it could have been. If there is anyway my wife and I can return the favor please let me know. I would be happy to do what ever I am able to do. I wish you the best with the great work you do.
Thank you again,
! Congratulations to Dr. Pallavi Iyer, Nurse Nancy Elliot, social worker Tara Saraceno and the rest of the tremendous staff that make up the department of Pediatrics . Thank you and keep up the outstanding work!
Allergy and Immunology News! Dr. John Sleasman participated in a poster presentation of his research at the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. The conference was held in Boston on the week of February 27. The title of the presentation was Prolonged Suppressive Antiretroviral Therapy Failed to Correct HIV-1-mediated Defects in Naive and IgM+ Memory B Cell Transcriptome Repertoires.

PEDIATRICSMatch Day!
This yearʼs Match Day was held on March 17th, St. Patrickʼs Day! Fourth year medical students, plus their friends and families, arrived at Skipperʼs Smokehouse near the USF main campus at noon to find out where they will be going for residency and to celebrate all of the hard work that went into reaching this special day.
That evening, the students that matched with USF Pediatrics were invited to meet with faculty, staff and current residents at The Hula Bay Club for a welcoming celebration.
More photos from both events can be viewed on our Facebook profile!

Pediatrics’ Growing Family
Please join us in welcoming the arrival of baby Michael to Dr. Erika Abel and her husband Steve Alamia. Michael was born at TGH very early Saturday morning, March 12, 2011 weighing in at 7 lbs. 13 oz and measuring 19 inches long. Mommy and Michael are doing well and on the way home to introduce Michael to his big brother Peter!
Neonatology News
! Dr. Lewis Rubin was featured in a St. Petersburg Times story, which was also picked up by national publications, about preterm babies being born with the assistance of a vacuum extractor and the dangers that may or may not exist from the use of such a device in premature births.
! This story can be found on The Dallas Morning News website by following this link.
! Early Hearing Loss Detection and Intervention (EHDI) goals include screening before 1 month, diagnosis by 3 months and intervention by 6 months of age. This timeline is often considerably delayed in infants treated in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) where testing and aural intervention conditions are typically adverse. ! The TGH Newborn Hearing Screening Program will be updating its protocol to take advantage of opportunities created by the private-room design of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Screenings will be performed as early as possible, and diagnostic evaluations will be performed on infants failing the screen. Infants identified with permanent hearing impairment will receive amplification and intervention services prior to discharge whenever possible. These services will be coordinated among Janet Sullivan, director and audiologist of the program; USF Communications Sciences and Disorders and Kristie Reeves, TGH Audiologist.
