SYNDICATE NEWS

Senior News - The senior classes have all had an inspirational trip to the Art Gallery where the resident teacher, John Neumegen, showed and explained several portraits to the children. He used some very old and modern works, and some well known artists, to explore some of the features of portraits.Back in the studio the 3 classes all experienced different styles of creating portraits:Room 1 created ‘painterly’ portraits, using magazine pictures and paint. Room 2 created works using a technique called sgrafitto, using a scratching

method to reveal colour and texture. Room 2a created blue works, where media was applied in unusual ways. All of the works have allowed the children to further their understandings and interest in portraiture, and have provided opportunities to create attractive displays. Year 6 children are excited and getting ready for our 4 day camp at Camp Iona next week. The Year 5 children in R1 and R2a are looking forward to

Middle NewsWarrington Beach is the perfect place for learning to happen outside the classroom! The comments that children have made reflect their enthusiasm for their learning in this environment. We noticed that most animals on the rocky shore belong to different groups - invertebrates like echinoderms, molluscs, crustaceans or vertebrates like fish, or plants. Kayden has been wondering how animals communicate and if they do.Kathryn thinks that sea creatures are pretty clever in the way that they protect themselves from predators and from their harsh environment.

Junior NewsCome along to the Junior classes and see the many mini beast activities going on. Monarch butterflies have hatched in front of Room 12 children and the look of wonder on their faces was priceless. A !very successful trip to the Museum helped the children gain an even better understanding of insects and their characteristics. Thank you to the parents who came along to help these trips couldn't happen without you. Fun Friday has 2 more sessions to go this term. It was exciting to see how many parents we had to help this week, thank you, it made a huge difference to all the teachers having this support. Swimming has begun, at the Wakari Pool this time, and we look forward to another week of it next week. Thanks to all the parents who come and help the children get dressed.Kaikorai Kiwis has had 3 successful sessions with 20 enrollments to date. Some of these children are about to start school so that will decrease the numbers a tiny bit. Please feel free to come along and see what is happening and if you know a child who is not enrolled please invite them along. Ring the office or email me at [email protected] to book a place.

Oral HealthI am pleased to be able to tell you that children from Kaikorai Primary School will have their teeth checked over the next few weeks.

You should have received an appointment in the mail and it is expected that you will organise for your child to be taken to the dental hub at the dental school and back to school again.

Please let your child’s classroom teacher know when your appointment is.

For any urgent dental needs please ring 4716080.

Kapa Haka

The Kapa Haka for 2012 has made a great start. We had many more numbers than we could cater for and we hope to give children who missed out this time a chance later in the year.

The Kapa Haka is practising weekly on a Monday with the intention of performing at the Polyfest.

Many thanks go to Balmacewen Intermediate who are donating the services of our expert tutors Kopua and Ana Waititi.

SCHOOL NEWS

T Ballhttp://tiny.cc/w8b1aw

Kaikorai Blue and Kaikorai White have been having a fantastic time at T Ball in recent weeks. They have been learning the basics of hitting and throwing. We now move onto fielding and catching. Most importantly they are having a great time and are showing great fair play qualities. Many thanks to Kylie and Grant Batchelor and Courtney Dunn for coaching this year. Also thanks to the loyal and encouraging supporters group of parents!

Term One SportsWe are always extremely grateful to the parents who support our sports programme. Many parents have been managing and coaching teams this term and we could not work without them or the parents who help sub players and generally look after the health and welfare of the Kaikorai players. Thank you for your support!

As the term 1 sports wind down please wash and return all Kaikorai tops ready for term 2.

Physical Activity Leadership (PAL)

Last week our PAL group undertook their first

training session at the Edgar Centre.

PAL is a Sport Otago initiative which is designed to offer children with leadership qualities some activity

ideas, explore inclusion and give them opportunities

to work with children from other schools.

The PAL children can take up opportunities to help

coach school teams, organise lunchtime activities and show leadership around other sport and PE

areas of the school.

Walk to School Week

Walk to School week was once again a success this year with huge numbers of

children walking each day - our walking bus

certainly increased over the week! We

would like to say thank you to Sport Otago

for running Walk to School week and organising prizes. Well done for taking part

and congratulations to those children who

won spot prizes.
