along the north shore of Lake Apopka.
When completed, the trails will eventually
link up to the South Lake Trail and the
West Orange Trail.
“We are happy to do our part in expanding
the trail, and look forward to the day when
the entire Lake Apopka Loop Trail is com-
plete,” said Commissioner Campione.
Following the ceremony, Commissioner
Campione toured the restoration area’s
uplands, where the wildlife shifts from alliga-
tors to deer and turkey. This area in Lake
County is one of the only shaded parts sur-
rounding Lake Apopka.
For more than 15 years, The Friends of
Lake Apopka has worked with local govern-
ments and the SJRWMD on ecotourism in
the area, including construction of the loop
trail, which began two years ago. Phase 1 of
the trail, a 4-mile stretch beginning at Mag-
nolia Park, opened
in June.
“This trail will pro-
vide our residents
and eco-tourism
visitors with anoth-
er wonderful op-
tion to enjoy Cen-
tral Florida’s gor-
geous scenery and
outdoors,” said
Mayor Jacobs.

The Mount Dora Roadrunners Club,
Lake County Commissioner Leslie
Campione helped cut the ribbon on
Phase 2 of the Lake Apopka Loop
Trail on Thursday, Feb. 20.
“As a Lake County commissioner,
and a proponent of protecting our
area’s natural resources for both
ecotourism and quality of life for
residents, I am proud to be here
today at the official opening of the
extension of the Lake Apopka Loop
Trail,” said Commissioner Campi-
one.
The ribbon cutting opened 6.3 miles
of trail in the St. Johns River Water
Management District’s (SJRWMD)
scenic Lake Apopka North Shore
Restoration Area. The area is a ha-
ven for hundreds of species of wild-
life and is considered a premiere
birding destination.

Vendor and sponsor registration now open for the 3rd Annual Wings and Wildflowers Festival LEESBURG – Vendor and sponsor registration is now open for Lake County’s 3rd Annual Wings and Wildflowers
Festival, to be held Oct. 3-5 at Venetian Gardens in Leesburg, Florida. Lake County is partnering with the city of Leesburg in hosting this year’s festival at Venetian Gardens, 201 E. Dixie
Ave., Leesburg. Outdoor and indoor vending locations will be available at the newly renovated Leesburg Community Building. Spaces available for rent will include 10’x10’, 10’x20’, food vendor spaces and not for profit booths. Vendor spaces range in cost from $50 to $200.
Sponsorships start at the Monarch level for $250 and go to $2,000 for the Florida scrub-jay level. Sponsors of the fes-tival will be included in all advertising, social media, website and other promotional outlets.
The Wings and Wildflowers Festival will feature field trips in birding hotspots and wildflower havens and bring some of the nation's top birding, wildflower and nature experts to the area. This year’s keynote speakers include Greg Miller, the inspiration behind the star-studded film “The Big Year,” Stacy Tornio, editor of the premier national birding and gardening publication “Birds & Blooms” and Roger L. Hammer, an award-winning naturalist and author who served as the director of Castellow Hammock Nature Center in Miami.
With Lake County’s growing reputation as Florida’s premier birding destination, the goal of the festival is to en-hance awareness and appreciation of Lake County’s quality of life, natural resources and support environmental initia-tives on behalf of citizens and visitors alike. The festival is an ideal event for sponsors and vendors to gain an enhanced presence in the region, as well as in the birding and wildlife communities.
The festival’s sponsorship deadline is by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 5. Exhibitor and food vendor applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8. Rental fees are due at the time of application. Spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis. For more information about sponsoring this year’s festival, visit www.wingsandwildflowers.com/SponsorInformation. To become a vendor, fill out the online form at www.wingsandwildflowers.com/ExhibitorVendorInformation. For more information, contact Debi Dyer at 352-429-3673 or [email protected]. Hidalgo said Simmons, in addition to support they received from Lake County Commissioner Sean Parks and the Small Business Development
Center’s Stan Austin, has helped the pair “connect the dots.”
“This is just one of the ways the county inter-acts with our local businesses,” said Simmons. “The Hidalgos already have their business plan
down, but we try to help them expand and im-prove their business.”
From humble beginnings as hobbyists working inside their garage, the couple now gainfully em-ploys two special needs workers, have tripled
their output and are expanding into major retail establishments across the U.S.

When entrepreneurs Dave and Shannon
Hidalgo decided to streamline the pro-cess of sealing their eco-friendly Green Light Fire Bags, they reached out to Paul Simmons, Lake County economic devel-
opment and tourism coordinator. The couple already had found their reci-
pe for success. The Montverde family began their business two years ago, re-packing paper livestock feed sacks that
were normally considered trash and filling them with USDA-approved kiln-dried firewood, chemical free kindling,
and a box of matches to create an all-in-one campfire in a bag.
But Simmons hoped to add that extra spark. He recently facilitated a meeting between the Hidalgos and Billy Blanken-
ship, operations manager at Lakeland Animal Nutrition in Polk County. At the feed mill, the couple witnessed firsthand
how a massive manufacturing facility seals similar bags in large quantities.
“Paul connected us to individuals who do manufacturing, tried and true, every day,” said Shannon Hidalgo. “We got confirmation that our process is not too
