Treasure in Jars of Clay invites you to walk with Jesus
through Lent as a family. Gather daily for prayerful
reflection as you place your prayer requests and offerings
in your jar. We encourage you to Listen, Be Still, Act, and
Pray. We have designated Places of Prayer throughout the
Church grounds, open from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm, that
will help encourage conversations with God. We will focus
on a different “treasure” each week of Lent.

LISTEN: Jesus teaches us to PRAY. He was praying in a
certain place, and after he had finished, one of his
disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John
taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray,
say:
Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
For we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.” Luke 11:14

Jesus knew that we wouldn’t always find the right words
to pray, so he gave us a prayer that would always help us.

BE STILL: What is Jesus saying to you today?

ACT: Pass a piece of paper around the table, taking turns
writing one line of the Lord’s Prayer until it is complete.
Then pray it together and place the prayer in the JAR.
Or write your own personal prayer to GOD.

PRAY: Jesus, walk beside me. Live in me. Help me find
you today. Forgive me. Fill my life with everything you
know I need, for that will always be enough. Amen.

To the Clergy, Religious, and Laity of the Archdiocese of New Orleans

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

As we enter into this Lenten Season, God calls us to an honest, gracefilled assessment of our weakness
and sins. The Church’s call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving brings us to a conversion of heart and
unites us to the love of Christ. I sincerely pray that your Lenten journey will be one that leads you to
newness of life and blessings for you and your family.

With the technological advances in our culture and a growing awareness of the dangers that come with
this, we as a Church are called to protect and promote unity and the need for strong relationships within
the family. When a family is truly connected they are more aware of the ways in which their children
and grandchildren are struggling, especially in regards to the effects of exposure to dangerous content
online. This first Sunday of Lent, we in the Archdiocese of New Orleans invite all parents, parishes,
schools, and all organizations to learn more about this common struggle and how we can protect and
provide healing for our loved ones, especially our children.

Your parish has new resources to help you understand and confidently address this issue and act with
God’s love and mercy toward those in your homes and organizations.

May Lent be a blessing for you and your family and a renewed experience of God’s mercy. Know that
you will be remembered in my prayers, and please remember me in yours.

Wishing you God’s blessings, I am

Sincerely in Christ,

First Sunday of Lent
“Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert
to be tempted by the devil. ”
Matthew 4:1-11
There are two creation accounts in Genesis. The first
has God creating the world in six days, with man being His
final act of creation. The next account that we read today,
has God starting with man and then creating the world.
While very different, both accounts reflect the same
theological tenet: man is God’s greatest act of creation.
Man is second only to God in the whole order of creation.
But man is not equal to God. That brought on sin in the
world. We see the devil tempting man and woman with
that thought.
In the second reading Paul lays out the reason Jesus
needed to come into the world. Because man sinned, a
chasm opened between God and man. Jesus empties
himself of his divinity in order to become like man. His
death repairs that breach in God and man’s relationship.
In the gospel we see that the devil tries to tempt
Jesus. The three temptations center on three primary
attractions in our lives: food, immortality, and power.
Unlike Adam and Eve, Jesus does not give in but rather
rebukes the devil using Scripture.
As we enter into this season of Lent, we focus on the
three points of this season: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
If we desire to draw closer to God, we need to put aside
those temptations that keep us focused on the things of
this world. In prayer we establish a communication with
God and recognize that we cannot overcome sin simply by
willing it on our own. We need that grace that Jesus
achieved by His death. In fasting we put aside certain
pleasures that keep us from focusing on God. In
almsgiving we focus our attention on others by making
them the priority over ourselves. How do we focus on our
relationship with God?

Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church
The 6 Characteristics of an
Everyday Stewardship for Lent
Mindful
What is it that tempts you the most? Is it an action, a person,
or a place? It is something that seems innocent enough, like a
food, a drink, or an event? When you really start reflecting,
you find that there are many temptations all around. Even if
you are strong and never succumb to a certain temptation, it
is still there waiting for a weak moment in your life.
One difficulty in the life of a disciple trying to live a
stewardship way of life lies in the temptations we never
actually see. We are too busy thinking about past failures or
successes, or we are fixated on what possibilities the future
holds that we miss the important things going on in the
present. Jesus could be standing directly in front of us, but
we miss him because we are looking everywhere except
straight ahead.
Being mindful means that we are looking out for how and
when God will call us this very day. Our decisions this day will
have a huge impact on the future. If we only look to the
future, we will miss those important calls to action. We may
even find ourselves in a desert of sorts, looking for any way
out we can find. However, God may need us to give of
ourselves for a reason we cannot
yet discern while in that desert. We
need to stay awake, be aware, and
look for His hand in all things. If we
don’t, we may even miss the
pathway out of that desert when it
presents itself.
