Volume 12/Issue 3
We learn a second lesson from Mordechai’s leadership style. He spends much time at the “King’s
Gate”. In the ancient world, the gate is where the important people met, and where deals were
made. At the gate, Mordechai is paying attention to what is going on in the community and in the
Government. Indeed, it is while he is sitting at the King’s Gate that he learns of an assassination
plot hatched by the Kings guards, Bigtan and Teresh. Upon hearing this plan, Mordechai tells
Esther who tells the King. The assassination plot is thwarted and, much later in the story, this act
catapults Mordechai to prominent status and saves the Jews of Persia.
The fact that Mordechai is listening, and reacting, is as important to the story as Esther’s marriage
to the King and her decision to use her position to help her fellow Jews.
From Mordechai we learn the importance of observing, listening, and reacting to the world around
us. There is certainly danger in not heeding initial signs of trouble and, in this regard, I would ask
you, dear reader, to take note of the growing anti-Israel and Anti-Semitic rhetoric in and around our
current political debate. Observe, listen, and react.
I would prefer; however, to focus positive attention on the task at hand. I need to observe, listen
and react to what you want or need. As I usually do at this time of the year, I am seeking your help.
We are in the midst of setting programming for this coming spring and summer.
In observing and listening, I am pretty certain what classes I will teach:
A) The Hartmann Institute has a class on Jewish tribes which is an in-depth look at our
differences and similarities.
B) Pardes has a series of 5-7 classes on dispute resolution the Sanhedrin way, i.e. with
courtesy and respect. Given our current political climate, this should be a fascinating course.
Subtopics include:
1) Meet or Refuse to Meet; 2) Xenophobia or National Security; 3) Fake News or Uncovering
the Truth.
C) Learner’s Service: Teaching the meaning of our prayers, and how to pray.
D) Weekday Torah Study.
2
We celebrate Purim on Wednesday evening, March 20th and Thursday,
March 21st. Aside from the oft noted Jewish holiday theme of “they hated
us, they tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat (Hamantaschen)”, there are
other lessons to be gleaned from the Megillah. The first is that since the
story occurs in Persia, the ancient story of Mordechai and Esther
illustrates the precarious nature of the Jewish people when we have not
had a homeland.

When you read this we will have two months of winter down and one to go, We have accomplished a lot this winter. Through the hard work of Sherry Fruchterman we have completed the majority of the committees that will be planning, working and achieving great things for the JCC. I was just able to fill two positions for the technology committee, and we have added their names to the committee list. There is still space for any additional members. That only leaves the chair’ or co-chairs for the High Holidays committee. We should have that task completed shortly. We have posted the committee list in this bulletin, and due to Sherry’s hard work, we have new people working on a lot of committees that have not been involved, and people that lost interest have been revitalized. I am pleased to welcome all those who volunteered, and can’t wait to work with you all.
The constitution committee, which gave us the frame work of our community now switched gears and became the by-laws committee. They will make the framework into a community that we can be proud of. It will be strong enough to withstand the winds of change, if and when they come, and expand was we grow.
Like any community we have people move on, and seek new challenges. I wish them the success where ever they go. Sadly, we have also lost dear friends and will miss them and will always have fond memories of that they have given us. They have left their mark on our community, and will always be in our hearts. We have had new people join our community and welcome them with open arms. The reason I am speaking about this, is as we move forward, not everything your board does you may agree with, but I assure you that we do it with the sole purpose of making the JCC a better community. I have not always been on the side that won, but I have never cried foul and left a meeting in anger. The majority moves something forward, and I accept it. I wish everyone felt that way, but sadly that is not the case. Your board of directors is not a place where people should hold a grudge, or do something for spite. I hope we all have the JCC’s best interest when we vote on something as a board. Sometimes growth is uncomfortable, and positive change pain full, but it is necessary, for us to grow and survive.
Enough of me standing on my soap box. I want to change gears and talk about somethings still to come. We are doing some great things during the winter doldrums. Some of you have been at our monthly Friday night Shabbat dinners, and each month the numbers joining us is growing. I look forward to

Join Rabbi Jay and Sheri on a People to People tour of Cuba during Christmas week 2019. While a final itinerary has not yet been finalized, the trip will include stays in Cuba's nicest hotels and provide an opportunity to take in Cuba's history, and to connect with the Jewish community. Below is an example of the possible activities (We will have a guide during the entire trip):
• Tours of the Rum Museum, a cigar factory, the museum of the Revolution, and Finca Vigia, Ernest Hemingway’s home located in the outskirts of the Havana.
• Visit with the Sephardic Synagogue and meet with the community.• Travel to Trinidad with a visit to Plaza Mayor, the historic center of the town, declared
a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. The buildings surrounding the central square date from the 18th and 19th centuries when trade in sugar and slaves brought riches to the area.
• We will visit Santa Clara in central Cuba and meet with members of the Jewish Community and travel to the Jewish cemetery, which serves the communities of Santa Clara and Cienfuegos. The cemetery was recently restored and an impressive memorial to the victims of the Holocaust was erected.
• We will Visit the Beth Shalom Temple in Havana and learn about the history of Judaism in Cuba.
• We will have a Free day to explore Havana, interact with residents to learn about their daily lives or relax at the hotel.
• Visit the Callejon De Hamel, a small Havana alley stuffed with Cuban-Afro culture, art, and music, and then . . .
• Shop at Almacenes de Depósito San José, the huge Cuban arts and crafts pavilion on the port. Most meals will be included. This trip will be full of activities, but there will also be
time to rest and relax and enjoy the beautiful tropical surroundings. We will have the final itinerary shortly. If you are interested in this exciting trip or have questions, please call the office, or email the Rabbi at [email protected].
Also, please mark your calendars for a JCC trip to Israel at the end of June 2020!

Words from the Rabbi…
I would love to hold classes on the Northern part of the Island. If you are willing to open your home to a
class, or know someone who will, let me know.
In the works are the following Shabbat activities:
A) A Shabbat centered on Challah baking and the importance of baking in our tradition. As part of
this we will have a Challah baking workshop.
B) Speaker from ZOA discussing how to fight anti-Semitism on the college campus.
In addition to our regular Drop-in Havdallah, this year, we will have at least two Havdallah Coffee
houses.
We will be having 3 beach services this year. If you would like to help with assembling our “Shabbat-
In-a Bag” and handing the bags out, let me know.
The date of the Interfaith service has not yet been set.
We have a spring Shabbaton scheduled with a Melton class that I teach. Our congregant, Jeri
Kimowitz, is spearheading this Shabbaton. We will also have a Fall Shabbaton with our congregant,
Rabbi Paula Drill, and Orangetown Jewish Center.
This is just the start of what we have planned, and does not include our purely entertainment related
programming which, I am told will be even better this year than last year.
Don’t forget to join us every first Friday night of the month for Shabbat dinner.
Dinner at 6:00 pm and services at 7:00. We will Schmooze, sing, pray, Schmooze, learn, eat, and
Schmooze some more. Please call the office to let us know when you will be joining us!
Saturday, February 23rd will be our second “Cholentfest” of the year. Come for Torah study at 9:00
am, services at 10:00 and cholent at around noon. You can come for any one of the activities or for all
of them.
Finally, if you have any ideas for learning or Shabbat activities, I always want to hear them. I will
observe, listen, and react favorably!
Chag Purim Sameach!

seeing more of you. Please join us and if you can, come early to help set up. The JCC’s kitchen is not as intimidating as people make it out to be. I for one, seem to be getting my sea-legs, working around the galley, and have not messed up yet. Besides our Friday night dinners, once a month the Rabbi has a Saturday Cholent lunch. If you do not know what Cholent is come to our next lunch on Saturday February 23, 2019. I have para-phrased the famous line from Field of Dreams “ If you build it they will come” We did build it, (Our community), now it is “if you feed them they will come.” We love doing the dinners and the lunches, but we also need help in set up, clean up, and attendance. Let’s see if we can keep this going through May. A spaghetti dinner, or Bar-b-Que anyone? Just a couple of thoughts.
We still have March, April, and May to look forward to. Purim, Passover, are around the corner and it gives us special times to get together, making Hamentashen in the JCC kitchen, a second night Seder, a JCC Sunday scavenger hunt with lunch, a sponsored trip, miniature golf, and anything else you can think of. “IF YOU THINK IT, WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN” All it takes is you!!
I will try to keep the bus on the straight and narrow until we all get together again.

New
Members!!We are happy to announce
the following new members and
welcome them into our JCC
family
Bonnie Joy Farin, so apply named, passed away on December 22, 2018. Wherever she may be, those folks are chuckling at her jokes. They are the lucky ones. Over the years, Bonnie has been JCC Sisterhood President, advisor and friend to many, creator of the annual Sisterhood Shabbat Service. She was always upbeat, straight up with her advice and so much fun to be with. She embraced all kinds of projects such as her photography, jewelry making, hand-made tallit and kippahs. There was always something in the works. Even when she was undergoing treatment she managed to post “bon mots” on Facebook regularly. What a gal!!!
Here at the JCC and at her synagogue up in Aberdeen she will be sorely missed. All of us have reasons for joining a synagogue but one of the things we should not forget is the opportunity to meet and get to know some very special people. Bonnie Joy was one of them. RGV

PAVERS
Each time you enter the front doors of the JCC of LBI you will pass the engraved brick pavers donated by members and friends of the JCC of LBI. The messages on these stones could be in memory or honor of a loved one, a tribute to the JCC or simply the family name of a synagogue supporter. This is an ongoing project. Pavers are ordered and put in twice a year: Spring and Fall. Bricks are available in two sizes: 4” X 8” and 12” X 12”. Order forms are available on the JCC website: https://jccoflbi.org/brick-pavers/
We are taking orders for the Spring. Please contact Diane Hoffman to place your paver order or with any questions: 732-742-2881 or [email protected]
