Transcript of March 7, 2021 Third Sunday in Lent - wilshirebc.org

March 7, 2021Third Sunday in Lent

Typically, this Sunday would be our annual Spaghetti Lunch & Silent Auction benefiting Wilshire’s Youth Choir, and the students would be deep in preparation for singing and serving on Choir Tour this coming June. Now, instead of weekly lunch fellowship and hour-long rehearsal, they practice for 15 to 20 minutes in the parking lot a couple of times a week and we are holding onto hope for Choir Tour 2022. Before too long, we will once again see those teens gracing our chancel steps — some sleepy, some eager, some reluctant and some singing with full voice.

I’m sure it is not a coincidence that today’s anthem is a recording of the auditioned youth ensemble Shekinah singing “Sing Me to Heav-en.” It’s one of my favorite pieces to hear them perform, and I imagine this anthem will always bring Shekinah to mind for me. The composition is evocative, and the words so beautifully capture the power of music to touch us throughout life’s journey. Our greatest joys and deepest sorrows are so often marked by music, and “Sing Me to Heaven” vividly captures this truth. Just as

singing “Blest Be the Tie” transports me to the feeling of an old friend’s hand in mine, and “As The Deer” calls to mind the serenity of being surrounded by female voices singing a cappella, our hymns bring us to God.

Life sometimes feels like it’s lost a bit of its sheen for me these days. New experiences are nearly nonexistent and human interaction is minimal. I ache for memories that aren’t being made. Each day feels like the one before and I sometimes find myself at a loss when I pause to pray. My heart is ready, but the words don’t come. Gandhi observed, “It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.” Thanks be to God for music and poetry that fill the gap in our words.

As you experience worship today, allow the music to envelop you. May you feel the love of Wilshire surrounding you, may you feel God’s presence deep in your soul, may you feel trans-ported to heaven.

Chiming of the Hour

Prelude The Lord’s Prayer Albert Malotte

Opening Sentences David Beck

O Lord, full of compassion and mercy, we come today through our computer screens and at varying times to worship you. As you are present in our hearts, we become one community of faith. As we gather in our different ways around your holy table, may we lift our hearts and raise our voices to celebrate your wondrous love. O Lord, how we long for the day when what seem like silent lips will once again sing with gladness.

Greeting to Worshipers Tiffany Wright

Psalm Reading — Psalm 19 Megan Thompson and Luke Willson

Reader 1: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.

Reader 2: There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs

3

4

its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hid from its heat.

Reader 1: The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the LORD are sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Reader 2: More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can detect their errors? Clear me from hidden faults.

Reader 1: Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

All: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Dying to Live Reflections Gina Ortegon, Shawn Ashmore, Gladys Kolenovsky

Anthem Sing Me to Heaven Daniel Gawthrop Shekinah Ralph Manuel, piano Recorded March 1, 2020

In my heart’s sequestered chambers lie truths stripped of poet’s gloss. Words alone are vain and vacant and my heart is mute.

In response to aching silence, memory summons half-heard voices, And my soul finds primal eloquence and wraps me in song.

If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby. If you would win my heart, sing me a love song.

If you would mourn me and bring me to God, sing me a requiem, sing me to heaven. Touch in me all love and passion, pain and pleasure, touch in me grief and comfort.

Sing me a lullaby, a love song, a requiem. Love me, comfort me, bring me to God: sing me a love song, sing me to heaven.

Gospel Reading — John 2:13–22 Shelly Beck

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out

5

the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then said to him,

“What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

Celebration of the Lord’s Supper Heather Mustain

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory forever. Amen.

The Passing of the PeaceMay the peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

Thank you for giving. Your generosity is allowing Wilshire to continue its ministries in new and creative ways during this unprecedented time. Although we’re mostly not in the building, the work of the church continues. To get started or manage your giving, visit wilshirebc.org/give.

Summer dates set for youth, children

Dates have been announced for four sum-mertime children’s and youth activities, even as decisions remain as to what format they will take. The events and dates are:

■ Vacation Bible School: June 21–25■ Youth Camp: July 5–10■ Creative Arts Camp: July 12–16■ Preteen Camp: July 24–27

“While there are still more unknowns than knowns about what this summer will actually look like,” Associate Pastor Darren DeMent wrote in an email to families, “these dates rep-resent what we are hoping to be able to do this summer.”

Youth Choir Tour will not happen in 2021.DeMent says, “due to the nature of this trip and the months of pre-planning required, it is simply not possible to make that trip happen this year.”

DeMent stressed that safety will be of utmost importance as plans are made about summer offerings: “As we have done throughout the pan-demic, we will continue to follow the science, as well the recommendations and guidance of health organizations, in making any decisions.”

Last year’s Vacation Bible School offered a mix of take-home elements and optional in-person activities.

Immigration reform is of enormous impor-tance to millions of Americans, notably the

roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

With recent public polls showing strong sup-port for overhauling the nation’s immigration system, the Biden administration has proposed legislation that would pave a pathway to citizen-ship for nearly all undocumented immigrants living in the U.S., increase legal immigration and speed up consideration of protection claims from asylum seekers.

The U.S. Citizenship Act would also mandate steps to secure the country’s borders and ports of entry while investing $4 billion in the econ-omies of Central American countries to lessen the incentive for emigration.

The proposed law would also strike the word

“alien” from federal law in favor of “noncitizen.” The plan faces a round of tough hearings, and

its fate is uncertain. The last time Congress passed major immigration reform was 1986, when President Ronald Reagan signed a law making it illegal for employers to hire immi-grants without papers.

Allowing immigrants to stay in the country has the support of roughly three-quarters of Americans, and even a slim majority of Republi-cans, according to a Quinnipiac University poll published this month. Permitting these immi-grants to apply for citizenship is nearly as pop-ular: Sixty-five percent of Americans supported this, according to the poll.

The Christian Advocacy Committee will share additional immigration reform updates with the congregation, as warranted.

Immigration reform is key issue for Advocacy Committee

Pray for Wilshire health care workers

Rapid-response teams availableHealth Response Team is comprised of medical professionals in the church who are willing to make themselves available for general counsel and encouragement. These volunteers are not dis-pensing medical care but are available for general questions and guidance, especially when it may be harder to get to a doctor. Lead contact is Linda Garner, [email protected] or 214-452-3151. Food and Supplies Response Team is comprised of volunteers from our Missions and Ad-vocacy committees who are at the ready to help those who are isolated and need food or other supplies brought to them. We have identified existing designated and budget funds that will be used to meet urgent needs of members, such as food and medicine and limited rent assistance. Lead contact is Heather Mustain, [email protected] or 214-452-3110. Spiritual Support Response Team is comprised of trained lay leaders and staff who are available to talk with members who are lonely, scared or just need to talk during this time of isolation. This is not a substitute for professional counseling. Volunteers will call care receiv-ers on at least a weekly basis to listen to them and offer emotional support. Other referrals for additional identified needs will be made to the appropriate teams or staff. Lead contact is Gail Brookshire, [email protected].

Pray for Wilshire educators

As schools and school districts grapple with the complexities of having school during covid-19, we have compiled a list of Wilshire members who work in education. Keep them in your prayers and consider offering encouragement in the form of a note, email or phone call. We apologize for any omissions; please let us know of names that should be added to the list.
