Tickets are $7 and carry outs are available. An extensive buffet of foods will be offered. Martin Genealogy Library, read- ing chairs for the library, replaced sinks in the kitch- ens of the auditorium and children‘s library work area and provided a dona- tion to support the sum- mer reading program. The Friends of the Li- brary hope to raise addi- tional funds with this lun- cheon and other projects throughout the year to continue improvements at the library. Hammy winners FURNISHED PHOTO Winners and judges at the third annual Broadbent’s Pig Day celebration included (left to right) Chad Faughn, Candi Freeland, Diane Cooper, Beau Choate, Mike Mallory and Allan Watts. The Grand Champion Best of Show entry was Diane Cooper’s Sausage Braid. Area cooks showed off culinary talents at Broad- bent’s 3rd annual cooking competition last Saturday, March 3, in Kuttawa. “So Good,” “very rich,” “nice presentation, with delicious flavor” are the words used by judges to describe the Grand Champ Best of Show entry made by Diane Cooper of Kuttawa. Cooper’s recipe “Sau- sage Brunch Braid” was a delightful pastry made from crescent rolls filled with a mixture of Broad- bent sausage, onion, cel- ery, green peppers, garlic, cheddar cheese, green on- ion tops and parsley. Cooper was also named winner of the bacon cat- egory with her Mini Mush- room & Bacon Quiche. Beau Choate of Kut- tawa was winner of the country ham category, with his Country Ham Bites featuring a mixture of cream cheese, crushed pineapple and Broadbent country ham wrapped in an egg roll wrap, then deep fried and served with a sweet and sour sauce. Judges observed that this was a nice combination of flavors, with the pineapple being a nice surprise. Chad Faughn of Fredo- nia was named winner in our Kentucky Proud cat- egory. Faughn soaked his ribs in pineapple juice, rubbed with a blend of spices, cooked on hickory coals and then topped with Broadbent’s Hot & Spicy and Hickory BBQ Sauces. Judges comments includ- ed, “wonderful flavor, so tender, with the sauce add- ing such a unique flavor.” Faughn’s BBQ Ribs beat out Elbert Bennett’s Beef Brisket, last year’s Grand Champion. It was a tough call for the judges offering the Beef Brisket a well-deserved honorable mention. As part of the porky celebration, the Broad- bent staff prepared three tables of food, with Eas- ter, March Madness and Kentucky Derby Party Themes. The Easter table featured recipes for a sit down meal, March Mad- ness and Derby tables fea- tured appetizers such as Peppered Bacon wrapped Chicken Bites, Sweet Sau- sage Puffs, Country Ham Sliders and more. Two cooking demon- strations were presented during the day. The first demo was given by Broad- bent’s Beth Drennan, who fried country ham in brown sugar, maple syrup and butter for country ham sliders, featured on the March Madness table. Choate, who is Lake Bark- ley Tourism Director, pre- sented the second demo featuring his Country Ham Croquettes. He had en- tered and won the Grand Champ prize with the cro- quettes recipe at the first Piglicious Cooking Com- petition. “We are so blessed with a great panel of judges,” said Drennan. WPSD-TV’s Mike Mallory and WK- DZ’S Allan Watts have served as judges all three years. This was the second year for WKYQs Candi Freeland. “Our judges took over an hour to reach a deci- sion. It’s a very serious yet tasty task put before our judges, who do an ex- cellent job. They are also extremely fun folks to have on hand for the day. I would like to thank them, as well as everyone who came out to be a part of our National Pig Day Cel- ebration” said Drennan. “Start picking out your favorite porky dishes to enter in next year compe- tition,” she encouraged. Broadbent’s crowns ‘Hammy’ winners Staff Report • The Times Leader The regionally popular jazz quartet, “Grumpy Old Men”, will feature guest vocalist Kala Dunn during a March 10 performance at the West Kentucky Community & Technical College Clemens Fine Arts Center in Paducah. “Kala is a terrific mu- sician and the intimate coffee-house atmosphere of the “Backstage Pass Series” is really a perfect setting for her voice and style,” said Roger Reich- muth, saxophonist and leader of the quartet. Dunn is currently the vocalist with the Todd Hill Quartet and has been ap- pearing with that combo throughout the region. She lives in Murray, where she is a WKMS- FM staff member, church pianist and private studio piano teacher.
