New pre-Alert/Disclosure formsIf your partnership plays pre-Alertable Mid-

Chart or Super-Chart opening bids or overcalls inevents which permit such methods, you must fillout one of the new pre-Alert/Disclosure forms foreach such method that you play and make themavailable to your opponents before the start of eachround or match segment.

This applies to any event, NABC+ or region-al, which permits Mid-Chart or Super-Chartmethods. Look for the light blue forms on thetables where convention cards and pencils arelocated.

Turn ‘em offCell phones, audible pagers or any similar com-

munication equipment may not be operated or oper-able in the playing area during a session of play atNABCs except for health-related equipment or bypermission of the director-in-charge of the tourna-ment or event.

This is the resolution passed by the ACBL Boardof Directors, meeting before the start of the 2000Summer NABC in Anaheim. While the resolutionapplies only to NABCs, the board urged that “sponsor-ing organizations of other ACBL-sanctioned events arestrongly encouraged to adopt this policy.”

Discovering duplicateproves stimulating

Linda and Gary Stokes of Westchester PA arethrilled that they discovered duplicate after years ofplaying kitchen bridge with their friends. They andtheir friends, tired of rubber bridge, decided to takesome Easybridge! classes about five months ago,and now the Stokes are duplicate addicts.

“What a difference!” said Linda. “Duplicate isso stimulating!”

“Every duplicate hand means something,” saidGary. “Every hand has its own individual merits. Not only do you play one-bids, but they can be cut-throat. Two and three-level bids no longer are sillypartials – they mean something. They’re just asimportant as games and slams. We’re competitors,so we like it that way.”

They’ve won almost five masterpoints sincetaking those lessons. They’re playing every sessionhere that their work schedule allows.

Their enthusiasm for bridge carries over totheir sons, Michael and Ryan, who enjoy playingthe game during their free time at college.

Gary and Linda Stokes

Way, way outThis deal, from the second qualifying session

of the Silodor Open Pairs I, is the kind of thing thatgives computer hands a bad name. On this occa-sion, the deal also provided a rather interestingvariety of results.

Dlr: South ♠ J 10 8 5 2Vul: Both ♥ 4

♦ Q 7 4 3♣ Q 8 2

♠ —♥ A K 8 7 6 5 2♦ A K 10 9 8 6♣ —

The first thing about this deal is that no North-South pair went minus – although there were fivepairs with plus 190 who might just as well havebeen in the red. Looking at all four hands makesone wonder about that score. Equally, plus 640 withthe South hand doesn’t figure to earn many match-points (it didn’t – 8 out of 64).

The scores ran the gamut – in fact, there were14 different scores, the best of which was plus 2330(7♦ doubled), followed by 2230 (6♦ redoubledwith an overtrick) and 2140 (a pedestrian undou-bled, minor-suit grand slam).

There were also plus 1390 (6♦ undoubled mak-ing seven), plus 1740 (6♦ doubled with an over-trick) and plus 1430 (6♥ making – no overtrickmissing QJ1093 in the trump suit). One North-South pair scored an unusual plus 1800 (5♦ redou-bled, making seven).

The penalty numbers in favor of North-Southranged from plus 500 all the way to 1700.

Here’s how Brad Moss and Fred Gitelmanarrived at the top spot.

One genius actually passed with the Southhand, making a takeout double after 1♣ by West,Pass, 1♠ by East. He did, of course, have excellentsupport for the unbid suits.

Blissful in PhillyOne thing about Zia Mahmood – he always

seems to be having a good time when he’s playingbridge, no matter what.

On this deal from the second qualifying sessionof the Silodor Open Pairs I, Zia was laughing abouta slam he and Bob Hamman reached. “Anyone whoknew what they were doing would not get to slam,”Zia said. Of course, he wasn’t turning down theexcellent score they received for getting to the opti-mum contract.

The above was the typical auction. On a heartlead to the jack, king and ace, declarer cashed the♦A-K and led to the ♣Q. East took his ace to returna heart. Declarer knocked out the ♦Q and claimedthe rest.

Compare that with what happens if East ducksthe first heart. Declarer would be in dummy andwould lead to the top diamonds in his hand. Thenhe would play a club to the queen and ace. East nowwould lead the ♥K, and declarer would have to winin hand and would be an entry short of bringing inthe diamonds.

So what to do? Would you criticize a declarerwho played the percentages and took a finesse tothe ♣9? After all, that way you get back to paragainst all the other declarers who were luckyenough to have East cover with the ♥K on theopening lead.

If you took the club finesse, don’t cry justsmile. Larry Holtz made the nice play of ducking,in partnership with Tobi Sokolow, and he was dulyrewarded when declarer took the club finesse.

Convention cards– it takes two!

Each player is required to have a conventioncard filled out legibly and on the table throughout asession. Both cards of a partnership must be identi-cal and include the first and last names of eachmember of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has asubstantially completed card, the partnership may playonly Class A conventions and may use only standardcarding. This restriction may be lifted only at thebeginning of a subsequent round after conventioncards have been properly prepared and approved bythe director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6board matchpoint penalty for each board played, com-mencing with the next round and continuing until therestriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shallbe at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

Section topsDistrict 4 has come up with an innovative sec-

tion top award – an assortment of 10 different pack-ets of postcards, three per pack (in a variety of com-binations). The good news is that they are all pre-stamped and include a special pen (with our March2003 logo).

The cards portray many historic Philadelphialandmarks – the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall,City Hall, Elfreth’s Alley, Betsy Ross house, LoganCircle and Boathouse Row.

Take them to your room, address them – and aswe say in Philly – just sign your John Hancock anddrop them in a mailbox. A thoughtful remembrancefor family and friends back home.

Mugs, NABC Philly tee-shirts and a selectionof bridge books are also available as section topawards.

for N/S. The opening lead was the ♣Q. N/S calledthe Director when dummy came down. They saidthey thought East had “fielded” West’s psych of 2♦and should have to bid 3♦ over 2♠ doubled. TheDirector ruled that there was no evidence of a con-cealed understanding (Law 40) and allowed thetable result to stand.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s rul-ing. N/S told the Committee that with four-cardsupport for his partner’s first suit (diamonds) andonly a singleton in her second suit (spades) it wasnormal for him to take a preference to diamonds. The failure to do so suggested an implicit partner-ship understanding. If players adopt a destructivementality against a strong club and are able topsych freely without fear of getting “buried” bytheir partner, then the strong club bidders have nochance of getting it right (the psychers have anunfair advantage).

East said he had shown his hand with his initialaction (double) and his partner’s subsequent actionswere on his own. The Committee also determinedthat E/W had played together for more than 20years and that East had played bridge for more than50 years.

The Committee Decision: The Committeebelieved that the logic of the auction backed upwhat East had said about West acting on her own.East had shown two suits and the opponents hadannounced game-going values, making it highlyunlikely that West would wish to compete inwhichever of the other two suits East preferred.Further, if North’s double showed at least five dia-monds, then West could hold no more than four ofthem and could not possibly be bidding this waywith four-four in diamonds and spades.

East may not have expressed his reason forpassing very well, but he was experienced enoughto recognize that West’s bids suggested that she wasfeeling around and that East should stay out of herway. N/S seemed to have been playing methodsthat were adequate for exposing the psychic(North’s double of 2♦). They simply misjudgedwhat to do on this hand.

Based on this logic the Committee decided thatN/S were not damaged by a concealed partnershipunderstanding and allowed the table result to stand.

The Committee noted that given East’s initialaction, it appeared that E/W were very active incompeting against a strong club. This time Westheld a freakish hand with a moderate fit for both ofher partner’s suits (clubs and hearts), making herefforts to muddy the waters by psyching attractive.

However, E/W were advised that if they com-monly bid a short suit in this type of auction, theopponents were entitled to that information(“Partner has been known to bid a short suit in thistype of situation.”). The hand was referred to theRecorder.

Dissenting Opinion (Aaron Silverstein):Although I do believe that East could have workedout that West had psyched from his own hand andthe auction, his statements in front of theCommittee (“I had shown my hand and whatevershe did was up to her.” and “Forall I knew she had seven heartsand was about to bid them.”) ledme to believe there was a con-cealed partnership understand-ing. Even though South could, and maybe should, have workedout that it would be right to bid3NT, I am reluctant to say thathis failure to figure out that theopponents were psyching was an egregious errorwhich severed any connection to the damage. Therefore, I believe the contract should have beenadjusted to 3NT made five, +660 for N/S, for bothsides.”

ACBL institutes new pre-Alert/Disclosure formsBy Rich Colker, ACBL RecorderPairs who play methods not permitted on the

ACBL General Convention Chart are required topre- Alert their opponents to these methods prior tothe start of each round (in a pair event) or segmentof a match (in team games). The methods in ques-tion are those permitted only on the ACBL Mid-Chart or Super-Chart

The pre-Alert must be in writing and shouldinclude a complete description of the method alongwith an approved suggested defense if one isrequired. Those marked with an asterisk on theMid- or Super-Chart do not require a writtendefense.

Approved defenses can be obtained from theACBL Defense Database. These are available onthe ACBL web site (www.acbl.org) or can be pur-chased (hard copy) from the ACBL sales depart-ment. Defenders may refer freely to the writtendescription of the method and any written defenseduring bidding or play.

What is new in 2003 is the form that the ACBLrequires for disclosure of these methods. In the pastthe disclosure form was a simple lined sheet (some-times on gray paper, sometimes on yellow) with theheading “Pre-Alert/Disclosure Form.”

This has been replaced by two forms (one foropening bids, the other for overcalls) which havebeen adapted from the disclosure forms presently inuse by the World Bridge Federation. The new forms(printed back-to-back on light blue paper) containsections for the convention user to disclose farmore information about their methods than has pre-viously been required.

Information requested for a pre-Alertable open-ing bid includes: what seats and vulnerabilities thebid can be made in; a detailed description of whatthe bid shows; what typical, minimum and maxi-mum holdings look like; what the responses andrebids are; which hands responder may pass theopening bid with (if any); what various actions(including pass and double) mean in competition;and space for the approved suggested defense (ifone is required).

Information requested for a pre-Alertable over-call includes: at what vulnerabilities the bid can bemade; what the bid shows; whether the bid applieswhen partner is a passed hand, an unpassed hand oralways; what typical, minimum and maximumholdings look like; which hands responder maypass the overcall with (if any); what the partner ofthe overcaller’s bids (advances) mean; what variousactions by advancer mean if responder (third hand)acts; what various rebids by overcaller mean ifopener acts again; and space for the approved sug-gested defense (if one is required).

The requirement to pre-Alert Mid-Chart andSuper-Chart methods and the need to provide anapproved suggested defense for some methods (seethe Convention Charts for details) have existed forsome time. ACBL is now testing these new forms. The ACBL hopes there will be a marked improve-ment in providing full disclosure.

Some pairs will inevitably be forced to discussaspects of their adopted methods (such as what var-ious responses and rebids mean, or what variousbids mean if the auction turns competitive) thatmight otherwise be neglected.

And isn’t that a good thing? It will now be pos-sible to hold pairs playing these methods responsi-ble for any problems caused by missing informa-tion. And that’s surely a good thing.

The ACBL is interested in your comments andsuggestions regarding these new forms. You candrop them off at the Tournament Operations Office, which is located on the fourth floor of the Marriott.Or you can direct e-mail comments [email protected].

arrived the day before the 9/11 attacks. Messageswere received from Norman Kay, Max Hardy andBill Root just prior to their deaths.

Many outstanding personalities in areas other thanbridge also are on the Wall. How about three of themost famous actors in the history of the stage andscreen? That’s right – George Burns, Omar Sharif andClint Eastwood. What about the investment world?Sure enough – Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Tennisgreat Martina Navratilova is there as well as SupremeCourt Justice John Paul Stevens.

Actually there are three Walls. – South, Westand Luminary. In the center of the Luminary areCharles Goren, Bob Hamman, Edgar Kaplan andNorman Kay. Featured with Goren is an auto-graphed copy of the Time magazine from the Fiftieswhere he was featured on the cover as the King ofHearts. Benito Garozzo, Dave Treadwell andBobby Wolff are on the left, and Eddie Kantar,Arthur Robinson and Bob Jordan are on the right.

Altogether the Wall features more than 80 sub-missions from contributors spanning the globe.

Mark Lombard, who had the idea for the Wall, believes any club in the ACBL could build tremen-dous interest by building a similar Wall. “Our clubmembers are enthusiastic, and interest in the gameshas increased exponentially,” said Lombard.

Lombard did the organizational work, but heapplauds the major help he received from Judy Kay,Zeke Jabbour, Frank Stewart, Hamman, Wolff andRobert Lombard.

Lombard realizes that it takes more than photo-graphs on a wall to generate a global renaissance inbridge’s popularity. “However, simply expressingone’s passion for the game encourages others toexplore its many glories. It is, after all, a gloriousgame. As Norman Kay inscribed on his photograph,‘Here’s to bridge. Long may it reign!’”

in pair games.Rosenberg and Katz played a standard system

with a few gadgets. Said Katz of his first-time part-ner: “He played great – and there was a ton ofaction.”

Katz said he and Rosenberg arrived at 3NT sev-eral times on auctions not likely to be duplicated atmany tables. Fortunately for them, some “impossi-ble” 3NT contracts came home, along with loads ofmatchpoints.

The penchant for playing 3NT got so pro-nounced, Katz joked, “at dinner I asked Michael ifhe wanted to take Stayman off the card.”

After the first final session, Katz andRosenberg lay fourth overall, more than 106 match-points behind the leaders, Eric Greco and GeoffHampson. Those two, plus the pair lying secondafter the first final – Steve Weinstein and RobertLevin – had poor games in the evening and droppedin the standings.

Bob Goldwater (South) refused to give up inthe bidding or the play on this deal. West led the♣A and continued with the king, and Goldwaterruffed. He cashed the ♦A K and conceded a dia-mond to East’s 10. East would have done better byswitching to a heart at this point but he continued aclub, and Goldwater ruffed again. Now Goldwaterruffed a diamond in dummy and led the ♠J, ducked. He ruffed a club back to his hand as East pitchedthe ♥J, and led a heart to dummy’s ace. At trick 10,he was in dummy with East’s ♠Q 7 3 trapped infront of his ♠A K 10. Plus 650 was worth all thematchpoints.

Joe Brady and Margery Tamres, who claimedtheir first North American championship by win-ning the Mixed Pairs, found the right defense onthis deal.

Next came the hearts and Brady read the situa-tion perfectly – he realized declarer had started withtwo clubs and was probably down to the singletonqueen at this point. So he pitched his three lowclubs.

When declarer finally cashed the ♣A, Brady’sking dropped – and so did declarer’s queen. SoTamres took the setting trick with the ♣10.

North at my table eventually passed and led the♦K, shifting to the ♠9 at trick two. I ducked to the♠Q and the ♦Q was returned, overtaken by North, who played a second spade.

I won the ♠A and led a low club to partner’sace. Then he cashed the ♣Q, noting North’s echo inclubs. This was the position:

♠ —-♥ A 8♦ J 8 7♣ J 10

The winning play on defense is not so hard tospot. If you lead a low heart from hand (West),North can rise with the ace and play a low diamond, forcing you to ruff with the ♥Q. South ruffs the ♣Klow and the defenders must get another trick.

When I led a low heart to dummy, however,North ducked. Now I had a tempo: the ♥Q wins, Iplay the ♣K, ruffed and overruffed and exit with asecond heart to North’s now bare ♥A. WhateverNorth plays at that point – a club, high diamond orlow diamond – I have the rest.

It was nearly the last board, however, so Northand I were both tired. I put in the ♥9, playing Northfor a 2-3-5-4 pattern, and went down one.

Oh, well. Confession is good for the soul.

Scholarships for ACBL Juniors

A new scholarship program is now availablefor ACBL Juniors. The plan, which owes its fund-ing to generous donations, is available to collegeand high school bridge players 25 and younger whoteach bridge at schools.

The initial program will award $500 scholar-ships to those who teach the equivalent of theACBL Bidding Series (Club Series) or an eight-week program (16 hours of lessons to a class of sixor eight students who are 25 or younger).

In addition, the ACBL Educational Foundationand the ACBL Education Department will providebooks, tee shirts and an additional stipend of $270for teaching the courses.

The $500 scholarship is payable to the schoolof choice for the Junior bridge instructor.Additionally, courses must be taught at accreditedcolleges, universities or trade schools for highschool graduates.

Contacts are Jayne Thomas ([email protected]) orCharlotte Blaiss ([email protected]).

Scholarships for Junior Instant MatchpointGame winners and NABC Caddy Competition win-ners will be available in the near future.

Its own rewardSometimes your only reward for playing well is

the knowledge that you did. Jeff Aker had thatexperience on this deal from the second qualifyingsession of the Silodor Open Pairs I. Aker wasNorth.

(1) Game forcing with shortness in spades andboth minors.

East led a low spade to the jack and king. Akerthen cashed five club tricks, discarding a diamondand his low spade. His right-hand opponent dis-carded three spades, while East let go of a lowspade and a diamond.

Reading the position accurately, Aker cashedthe ♦K and ♦A, then played the ♥Q and a heart tothe ace. This was the end position:

♠ Q♥ K 9♦ —♣ —

♠ 9 ♠ A♥ — ♥ 10 8♦ Q 8 ♦ —♣ — ♣ —

♠ —♥ 5♦ J 9♣ —

Aker exited with the ♠Q to to endplay East, who was forced to lead into Aker’s heart tenace. That was good for plus 690, not a huge differ-ence on a 64 top since many East players dis-carded hearts prematurely on the run of theclubs, making it easy for North to scoop up 12tricks. Still it’s always good for your amour pro-pre to play correctly.

Colin Dexter uses quotes to head eachchapter in his books. This is the heading ofone of his chapters in The Dead of Jericho:

“I say, ‘Banish bridge! Let’s find somepleasanter way of being miserable together.’– Don Herold.”

Why Bramley sits EastWhenever Bart Bramley has a choice, he sits

East. Why? “I’m from the East – Boston – and sit-ting East reminds me of my origin.”
