Information for Year 9 Parents From Philippa Ferguson, Deputy Principal with responsibility for Year 9. Year 9 students have now been attending Tauranga Girls’ College for half a term. The students have settled well into the routines of each day and are definitely more assured in navigating their way around campus. Many have taken the opportunity to make new friends. Thank you to the many parents who took the time to attend the Year 9 Pool Picnic. This was a great opportunity for tutors to meet families in a friendly and relaxed environment. The Year 9 students embraced the opportunity to be fully involved in both the Swimming and Athletic Sports, this has meant many have already received two

points towards their school-wide participation for Junior Diploma. The minimum requirement is four points, it is clear that there are many students who will surpass this as they have already involved themselves in extra-curricular groups whether it be the Arts, Sports or Service. The offer of activities is on-going. It is important your daughter is alert to the Daily Notices read each day in tutorial time. Your daughter’s punctual attendance at tutorial time facilitates this communication. The Daily Notices are also available on the school website. The school website through the KAMAR web portal also allows caregivers to monitor their daughters attendance and progress. Details and passwords will be sent by mail in Week 7 of this term. My role in your daughter’s life at College is the overview of the education (in the broadest sense) of all Year 9 students. The tutor teacher has the first responsibility for students. The Deans are Mrs Glaser-Brown and Mrs Keightley. Guidance Counsellors are Ms Burr and Ms Chantal Stopford.

Keeping Parents Informed of Student Progress (KPI) Interim Reports for the whole school will be issued on Thursday 27 March. This report summarises your daughter’s self

management progress in all subject areas. If you have any concerns, please telephone the Deans of your daughter’s year level. A Year 9 and Year 10 Parent-Teacher Evening will be held on Thursday 03 April 4.30-7.00pm. This will be an opportunity for parents of Year 9 and 10 students to discuss the report with teachers. 5 minute interview times are allocated for each subject. Bookings will be available online from Thursday 27 March, 4pm.

Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ Colleges combined Production We are excited to announce the combined Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ Production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” will be staged in late July. It is a high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. It’s the zany new 1920’s musical that has taken Broadway by storm! Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. The musical will be directed by Daniel Pepperell who is heavily involved in the musical theatre scene here in Tauranga, musical direction by Leon Gray-Lockhart who has assisted with accompaniment and vocal coaching here at the college before, and choreographed by the Tauranga Girls’ College acting Head of Department for Performing Arts Caroline Gill. The audition process is well under way and we are excited about the talent we have had come through. We are on the look out for 1920’s style typewriters for the stenographer scene and any parents interested in assisting with costumes or set construction. Please contact Anne Robinson (Producer) on [email protected] or on extension 808 if you can assist or help with any props.

Stage Challenge Stage Challenge is well underway for 2014 with the planning and audition stages currently being carried out. The student leadership team are excited about the possibilities and creativity that is arising from working together and as a school we look forward with anticipation at the final product. Competition will be held at Baycourt on either the 16 or 17 June so put this in your diary now. Expressions of interest have also been sought from students interested in assisting backstage. Any queries regarding this are to be directed to Miss Rosie Potter (teacher in charge of Stage Challenge).

Measles Update Between late December 2013 and 24 February 2014, there have been 47 confirmed measles cases reported in New Zealand: 29 in Auckland, 15 in Bay of Plenty/Lakes, and three in Wellington. Some of these cases have been in pre-school aged children. A total of 8 cases have required hospitalisation to date. Most cases have occurred in unimmunised people, and immunisation remains the best way to prevent infection and spread within the community.

Measles is a highly infectious disease that affects both adults and children. Measles is more serious than many people realise. Symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes and a runny nose, followed by a rash which tends to start on the face, before moving over the head and down the body. The rash develops about 3 days after the other symptoms start.

Complications can include middle ear infections, pneumonia and more rarely, encephalitis or brain inflammation.

The best protection against measles is the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine which is free for all children. MMR vaccinations are scheduled at 15 months and 4 years.

MMR vaccination is also free for susceptible adults born after 01 January 1969 who have not received two doses of a measles containing vaccine.

Hair Colour Variations We have been really pleased with the start to the year for the majority of our students, particularly in the areas of attendance, uniform and engagement in learning. Unfortunately a small number of students are breaching our uniform code in the area of hair colour. This notice is to confirm that our uniform code includes the wearing of natural hair colour only. Non-natural colours, that is vivid non-natural shades such as blue, purple, pink and orange, whether whole of head, tips, highlights or strands are non-uniform and not acceptable at school. Students whose hair is dyed in this way are given a grace period until 07 March to comply with these uniform regulations. After this time uniform breaches will be dealt with in the usual way.

NZQA Entry and Fees The fee structure for National Qualification entries

remains the same as last year.

The government provides financial assistance to students entering for school qualifications if certain criteria are met. Students can apply for financial assistance and the application forms for financial assistance will be available from NZQA along with the information about fees later. Students and families will be given deadlines for fee payment and financial assistance applications with their entries and fees information. These will be issued in mid year.

Entry for all NQF standards and up to 3 Scholarship subjects is $76.70 Additional Scholarship subject entries are $76.70 per subject

Mathematics Department – A reminder about Mathsbuddy This is a computer learning/homework package for Mathematics for all levels. Students have access to thousands of tutorials, supplementary worksheets and revision tests designed to further enhance their learning. The standard of the material is very good and is suitable for students entered in all Mathematics courses throughout the school, Year 9 to 13. If you wish to get an idea of what the material is like visit the website www.mathsbuddy.co.nz. The cost is $28 for access for the year, which is to be paid through the Fees Office.

If there are any queries with regard these packages, please contact Mr Hockings HOD Mathematics

Positive Behaviour For Learning Parent involvement in children’s education is crucial Materials are from Michigan Department of Education(2001) School age children spend most of their waking hours (including weekends and holidays) outside of school. Therefore, the influence of parents/caregivers is huge. When parents/caregivers involvement begins in a child’s educational process early, the effects are powerful. Because of this, it is important for parents/caregivers to engage directly with their children in their learning activities at home and guide their children in seeing the value of education. The most consistent predictors of children’s academic achievement and social adjustment are parents/caregivers expectations of the child’s academic attainment. Parents/caregivers who have books available, take trips, guide TV watching, discuss world issues and provide stimulating experiences contribute to student achievement. Years of research have shown that when parents are involved students have: * Higher grades * Better school attendance * Increased motivation and better self-esteem * Lower rates of suspension * Decreased use of drugs and alcohol * Fewer instances of violent behaviour

Parents partnering with schools and teachers can change the future of education.

Entitlement for Special Assessment Conditions Students are entitled to apply for Special Assessment Conditions if they have a permanent or long- term medical, physical or sensory condition and or a specific learning disability that directly impacts on their ability to be assessed fairly in assessments for National Qualifications. NZQA grants entitlement to Special Assessment Conditions so that approved candidates may be fairly assessed and have access to assessment for National Qualifications. Special Assessment Conditions are approved so that entitled candidates can demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding, without providing unfair advantage over other candidates.

Supporting Documentation
