introduced Aretha Lynn Tremblay (known as
Lynn) who has been employed by Electric Boat
(EB) for more than 38 years. Electric Boat
Corporation is the premiere designer and builder
of nuclear submarines for the United States
Navy.
Lynn started as a clerk, filing documents and
providing supplies to shipyard engineers and
designers back in the days when the ship design
was paper based. In the 1970's with the help of
some On the Job Training,
Lynn changed jobs and
became a Piping Designer
in the same organization
that she had handed out
supplies to. In the 1980's
Lynn got a BS in
Mechanical Engineering
and a MS in Computer
Science and moved into the
ranks of the Engineering
Force. From there it was on
to Project Management and
the Fleet Support organization. In 2008 she was
invited to move to Hawaii and become the
Electric Boat Virginia Class Planning Yard and
Fleet Support Program Lead providing Planning
Yard Services in support of the Virginia Class
Submarines arrival in Hawaii. The USS Hawaii
arrived in July of 2009.

Lynn’s title is Program Lead Department 708-
Pearl Harbor, Planning Yard and Fleet Support.
Lynn is from Connecticut, and she is the site
manager for Electric Boat, a wholly owned
subsidiary of General Dynamics and a major
Defense contractor. They do construction of
submarines. Her job is to find materials and
drawings and help the Pearl Harbor shipyard in
other ways to maintain submarines. Her
organization has 42 employees, mostly
electricians, from the local Hawaiian company
HSI Electric, which was bought by Electric Boat
and now named HIS Electric Boat.
Trident class submarines are an older vintage,
and are now called Ohio class submarines. Pearl
is the current home port for about 16 or 17 Los
Angeles class (“688”) subs. The newest are
Virginia class, like the HAWAII (since July ’09)
and TEXAS (since late ’09) and the NORTH
CAROLINA all now home ported at Pearl.
Eventually Pearl Harbor will home port about
60% of the Virginia class subs -- a total of
around 24 to 30.
Subs typically deploy for two months out of
every nine.
Current construction of submarines is to build a
“tube” open at each end, and install as much
equipment as possible at Quonset, Rhode Island,
then send components to a yard such a Newport
News, Virginia by
barge for completion.
President Connie
thanked Lynn for her
presentation and asked
her to sign a children’s
book, Disney’s Atlantis
the Lost Empire
adapted by Catherine
Hapka, to be donated
to Aiea Elementary
School in her honor.
Bruce Fink led us in the Four-Way-Test.
