Welcome to the 2015 Benthic Ecology Meeting…!

…et bienvenue à Québec et au Canada!!

On behalf of the Benthic Ecology Meeting Society and the 2015 BEM Scientific and Organizing committees, we welcome you to the 44th annual Benthic Ecology Meeting in Quebec City, Canada. This event marks the second time that Université Laval has hosted the meeting and only the third time it has been held outside the USA.  While we hope to repeat the success of 2006, we are extremely pleased that the meeting is taking place in the historic Château Frontenac, the city’s iconic hotel set in the heart of the old city, itself a UNESCO World Heritage site. Moreover, participants include a wide diversity of scientists from across the continental and around the world, including many students. We are certain that over the next four days you will have stimulating and productive scientific interactions as well as wonderful cultural experiences in this unique part of North America. Profitez-en au maximum!!

Friday Night Social ! &!

This year we are attempting an ambitious event that combines cultural, social and scientific elements. The base of this operation will be the Morrin Centre, an English-language cultural centre located a short 5-minute walk from the Château Frontenac in the heart of the old city. The Morrin Centre itself is a gem – the building was built between 1808 and 1813 as the city’s original jail, but was then converted into a college in the 1860s. Unfortunately, the Morrin College closed in 1902, and the building served only as the home for the library of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec, Canada’s oldest learned society, until its recent restoration and renovation by the Society. So enough history – what about now? Well, on Friday from 4:30 to 7:30 we have tours of the building, including original jail cells, the restored chemistry laboratory, and the Victorian library. Starting at 7:30, hourly screenings of the Beneath the Waves Film Festival will occur until 10:30 (you can select your showings at the time of registration). Socializing will be encouraged throughout the evening at different locations within the building. Quebec’s complex liquor laws are making exact plans difficult to determine at this time, but the goal is to provide affordable beverages and light snacks throughout the evening, and people are encouraged to come and go as they desire. Indeed, the building’s capacity does not allow all BEM participants to be present at the same time, but we are counting on a dynamic bidirectional flow of people in and out of the centre as they attending the film festival’s screenings, exploring Quebec City’s fine restaurants, enjoy the Old City’s winter ambiance and catch up with old friends and new acquaintances. One important logistical challenge will be the management of winter boots and coats. To help us in this endeavor, please bring indoor shoes (boots are not allowed in many parts of the centre) and be patient as we retrieve your things at the end of the evening. !

From the Chateau Frontenac (four city blocks, about a 5-minute walk)! From the Château Frontenac, go down the hill on rue du Trésor and then turn left on rue Sainte-Anne near the 1650 Restaurant. Continue on rue Sainte-Anne for 3 blocks, bearing left at St. Andrew’s Church. The Morrin Centre is at the corner of rue Sainte-Anne and chaussée des Écossais (Entrance is just down the path on chaussée des Écossais). !
