There are many reasons to be excited about the arrival of another WHL season. As the premier juniorhockey league in the world, we all take great interest in watching the remarkable progress our topprospects make during the course of the WHL season. From the established WHL veterans alreadydrafted by NHL Clubs, to the top rated prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, to the new crop ofhighly touted rookies entering the WHL, these young stars will excite fans in all of our WHL markets.The WHL provides an ideal environment for players to develop as they continue to pursue their dreamof playing in the NHL or representing their country in a major international competition. Many of thesetop draft eligible prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft will have the opportunity to showcase their skills asthe WHL hosts the CHL / NHL Top Prospects game, January 15, in Calgary.The WHL also takes great pride in offering our players the best academic and hockey opportunitiespossible, as we award over 325 WHL Scholarships to graduate players each season, while more than 20percent of all NHL players got their start in the WHL.As you cheer on your favorite WHL team in their quest to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth inthe MasterCard Memorial Cup, I am sure you will enjoy watching the world’s finest young prospects inaction throughout the WHL.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTHITMEN HEADLINES: The Calgary Hitmen visit Western Financial Place in Cranbrook tonight for Game 6 of their WHL East-ern Conference quarter-final against the Kootenay Ice. The Ice lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 following Thursday’s 6-5 victory in Calgary. Sam Reinhart paced the Kootenay attack, scoring once and setting up four others in a first star performance. Adam Tambellini scored twice for Calgary, while Elliott Peterson, Kenton Helgesen and Greg Chase added singles. The Hitmen outshot the Ice 31-24 and also won the special teams battle, going 2-5 on the power play while killing three of the four Kootenay chances.INSIDE THE EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTER-FINALICE LEAD THE BEST-OF-SEVEN SERIES IS TIED 3-2in a Game 6 was in the 2013 Eastern Conference final against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Brooks Macek scored in overtime to give Calgary a 4-3 win. Calgary is on a three-game Game 6 winning streak. In addition to last year’s win over the Oil Kings, Calgary produced a pair of Game 6 victories in the 2010 playoffs. Kris Foucault netted the overtime winner in Medicine Hat as the Hit-men eliminated the Tigers in Round 2, while the Hitmen went into Moose Jaw to win 7-3 in the Round 1 forcing a game seven.GOALS GALORE: Through the first five games of the series, the two clubs have scored a combined 45 goals. The franchise record for most goals scored by both teams is 60, set in 1999 between Calgary (33) and Kootenay (27).SCORING BREAKDOWN: At even strength Calgary has outscored the Ice 17-12. On the power play, Kootenay has 10 goals to Calgary’s four. The Hitmen have the only two shorthanded goals in the series (Brassart, Padakin).STREAKIN’: Dating back to the regular season, Greg Chase (7g, 9a) is on a nine-game point scoring streak. Chase is the only Hitmen player to have registered at least one point in each playoff game this series. Radel Fazleev (2g, 4a) and Ben Thomas (1g, 4a) have points in three consecutive games. Jake Virtanen (1g, 1a), Elliott Peterson (1g, 1a) and Jaynen Rissling (2a) all have points in back-to-back games. Pavel Padakin (1g, 2a) had his two-game point streak snapped in Game 5.DIVERSE ATTACK: Calgary’s 23 goals in the series have been scored by 12 different players, while 17 Hitmen players have at least one point.SERIES TRENDS: The road team has the better record, winning three of the five games… Following a pair of convincing wins in the first two games, the last three games have been decided by a single goal… The Hitmen have scored the first goal in four of the five games in the series… The second period has been the highest scoring, with 20 of the 45 combined goals (44.4%) netted in the middle frame… There have been three penalty shots in the series, two by the Hitmen (Brassart, Helgesen), but all three have been stopped.ROOKIE CONTRIBUTIONS: Hitmen rookies have combined to produce 26 points (12g, 14a) in the series.WHL LEADERS: Adam Tambellini (4g, 4a) is the top scoring rookie with eight points and sits tied with Greg Chase (4g, 4a) and Portland’s Oliver Bjorkstrand (4g, 4a) for eighth overall in the league.
