Greetings!
We are beginning the final week of Lent. I pray that it has been a fruitful time for all of you. When living out our Lenten observances of prayer,
fasting and almsgiving we not only show our solidarity with Christ but we also combat our tendency to do the opposite of these: to not com-
municate with God, to allow our bodily pleasures to rule and to think only of ourselves and our own material comforts.
As we near the end of Lent I wanted to encourage all you to make the most of Holy week and to participate in its liturgies. The Chrism Mass at
St. Benedict Cathedral will be Tuesday evening. This is a time for our whole diocese to come together and show our solidarity with our bishop
and the Church. During this Mass the church oils are blessed and we priests renew our promises to the bishop.
Holy Thursday Mass is very sacred. A time when we remember the beginnings of the Mass, when Jesus first instituted the Eucharist with His
words: “Take this all of you and eat…This is my body which will be given up for you”. Then the washing of the disciple’s feet; first, Christ
serves and cleanses us then we must go forward and do likewise.
Good Friday is a time for us to mentally and physically enter into Christ’s passion and death as we read the account of his suffering and death
while also reverencing the cross and receiving communion. All this is to help us prepare for and understand the impact of His resurrection. This
is often a time when we start anew with our relationship with God. Side by side with those entering the Church we experience a newness of life
an outpouring of God’s grace through our repentance, profession of faith, and acknowledging and receiving Christ’s body, blood, soul and di-
vinity in the Eucharist; we are so blessed to have this extraordinary gift. God bless and I hope to see you at our Holy Week liturgies.
Fr. Jeff

Poverty at the Crossroads
Indiana Bishop’s Pastoral Letter on Poverty
Questions for Reflection
On February 18, 2015, the five Bishops of Indiana promulgated
a pastoral letter entitled, “Poverty at the Crossroads”. This doc-
ument asks all Catholics and people of Goodwill to See, Judge
and Act as our faith calls us to respond. The Bishops are re-
questing that we take time during the Lenten and Easter Seasons
to read and reflect on the message in the letter. The questions
below are taken from the pastoral Letter. To read the pastoral
Letter, visit www.chartiesevv.org. A statewide survey asking for
your thoughts on the pastoral Letter’s message is also available
there.
1. Have you been surprised to discover relatives, friends or
neighbors in distress as a result of changes in our state’s
economy over the last five to ten years/
2. Where do you see the reality of poverty in Indiana?
3. How is your parish, school and diocese now responding to
the poor in its midst?
4. Do you agree that the Church has a responsibility to speak
on behalf of the poor?
5. Is there an issue that is more important for the Church’s
consideration than the four mentioned in this Letter (Family
Life, Employment, Education, and Health Care)?
6. How does my community (parish, school, institution) direct-
ly serve the needs of the poor?
7. How could my community unite with others in a strategy to
alleviate the most fundamental causes of poverty in Indiana?
Provided by Catholic Charities Diocese of Evansville.
