    SCHOOLN e w s l e t t e r

A very special welcome to Mackenzie Sher idan, Aaliyah Sheehan,Manu Haggie, Leilani Nika, Amelia Hawkins and their families to

    Kaikorai Primary School!

    PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

    Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another

term but time always goes faster when you are busy! The

large number of visits and experiences outside of the classroom have been

a highlight this term including tramps, camps, visits to dairy farms and

beaches, Art Gallerys and the Settlers Museum to name just a few. This

has resulted in some excellent inquiry work taking place in classrooms and

has solidified the students understanding of the concept of sustainability.

Next term, the school will be looking at financial literacy and how

societies function. It will be yet another busy but interesting term!

Shane Melrose will be leaving us at the end of the term as he takes on a

very different job in the New Zealand Fire Service. We have been very

lucky to employ Jason Benoit who has a wealth of experience across allyear levels and will be starting in Term 2 in Room 4.

This is the last newsletter for the term and I would like to wish everyone a

great last week of the term and a wonderful holiday.

    Kind regards,

    Simon Clarke

    SYNDICATE NEWS

    Middle News-

Wow, this term has flown by and our children are ready for a well deserved break. This term thechildren have come up with clever ways to raise money whilst also being sustainable; we raisedover $500 for Orokonui Eco-sanctuary. Thank you to everyone who donated goods, gave theirtime or bought books or sherbet.

Look out for Harry and Taylors letter to the editor about cats being pets not pests in the OtagoDaily Times. This was a timely article as this issue has reappeared in the media within the lastweek.

We wish you all a wonderful time over the holidays and look forward to seeing refreshed and re-energised children in Term 2.

    Junior News

    SCHOOL NEWS

Year 6 CampThe senior classes have had a very busy week pursuing outdoor activities. The year 6 children went to Camp Iona near the Herbert Forest. We travelled up by bus on Tuesday 17 March,

unpacked and then walked down the river to listen to a local poet read us some of her poems.

Her use of rhythms and rhymes to tell the stories of her environment were clever and the children appreciatedher witty sense of humour in many of her poems. We have her books in our school library. On the next two days we had a range of activities including an abseiling circuit using a course over the river, taken by Dave Brash; a Search and Rescue activity led by Constable Ross Greer; a technology challenge to builda river craft from only found materials; and yachting and kayaking at McKerrows Pond. The children impressedall of us with their enthusiasm, willingness to give new things a go, and their aspirations to do their best. Theircamping spirits were superb!

There was always a bit more fun in the evenings after dinner, including games, spotlight and our traditional campconcert where children had the opportunity to provide the entertainment for the night.

Our last moments at camp were also fun with a ride down the slide and a picnic at Moeraki Village. We wouldlike to pass on a very special thank you to the parents who helped us at camp. We appreciated our camp parentteam, who worked tirelessly.

We are planning on putting all of the photos in a dropbox folder inthe new term for you to be able to download.

Who Wants Our Children to beSafer? All parents are reminded of the importance of obeyingallroad rules when dropping off or

picking up children from the school gates. Pleasedo not:

double park park on dotted yellow lines drive on foot paths

park across neighbours driveways. These behaviours are not only illegal but also endanger your children. In the interests of childsafety, please consider dropping your child off a short walking distance from school. We live in asafe community and the independence provided by a 50m-100m walk is good for your child.
