APRIL (Month of the Resurrection)
When I was only three and very small, you see, with golden, curly locks (not telling time by clocks), some months I spent (by loving parents lent) in the country with an uncle and aunt. One morn in early spring, when birds an alleluia sing, I was aroused, hastily dressed, and given a piece of smoked glass. Inevitably I would ask, “What today is this?” “This is Easter Sunday, the day Our Lord arose, and you must see the sun dance through the windowpane.” The happy, happy sun! (knowing no eclipse of sadness, would dance for sheer gladness.) In later years spellbound, I stood on the very ground Our Lady had appeared to Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia. The sun of childhood’s days shed its vivifying rays at Fatima. Our Lady has such a power to win a miracle from God (Mother of the Divine Son): On October 13, 1917, drenched to the skin, the immense crowd was dried in the solar’s fantastic spin.

EASTER SUNDAY
AN EASTER GIFT: BANISH CARE
The two disciples who encoun-tered the Risen Christ on the road to Em-maus race back to Jerusalem and re-count to the others what took
place on the way and how Jesus made Himself known to them in the breaking of the bread. As they are still speaking, Jesus Himself stands in their midst and says, Peace be with you. Their re-sponse? They were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost (Lk 24:36-37). Really?
Anxiety gets the better of us when we least expect it. In the presence of the Resurrected Jesus, anxiety should be the last thing we feel. But the truth is that only the power of Christ’s Resurrection can transform anxiety and bless us with the grace to live in Gospel peace, even amidst the daily bar-rage of anxiety in our life.
Anxiety and its effects Saint Thomas Aquinas speaks
of anxiety as a sorrow that “so weighs on the spirits that there seems no escaping it.” It is fear of the unknown—fear of “a disagree-able situation” that is “unforeseen and unforeseeable,” fear of “future misfortune.” Maybe there is no way to make anxiety completely go away…and maybe there is some anxiety that is actually beneficial, for even Saint Paul speaks about his anxiety for all the churches (see 2 Cor 11:28).
Trouble comes when we let anxiety determine and dominate our life. The Book of Proverbs tells us, Anxiety in a man’s heart de-presses it (Prv
12:25). That is so, as Saint Mar-garet Mary Alacoque pointed out, because anxiety “withdraws the soul from God.” That withdrawal puts us in a most precarious state, for, in the judgment of the North American martyr Saint Charles Garnier, “It is by the feel-ings of anxiety that the devil harms us more than any other means, and unless you are ex-tremely watchful, you will fall in-to his snares.” Which is why Doc-tor of the Church Saint Francis de Sales will say, “With the single exception of sin, anxiety is the greatest evil that can happen to a soul.”
How to deal with anxiety No wonder, then, that in the
Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us over and over again, Do not wor-ry about your life (Mt 6:25-34). In His very first parable—the parable of the sower and the seed—Jesus warns us about the
seed sown among thorns, that is, worldly anxiety, the lure of rich-es, and the craving for other things that intrude and choke the word, and it bears no fruit (Mk 4:18-19).
If anyone had a “right” to be anxious, it would be the Apostle Paul, given all the sufferings, and persecutions, and ordeals that af-flicted him. But instead, Saint Paul directs us with commanding certainty, Have no anxiety at all (Phil 4:6). He can order this be-cause something stronger than anxiety has already transfigured his life!
These Scriptural counsels
show that much of the anxiety we experience is of our own making. Too often the cause of our anxie-ties is a hidden trust in our own strength and understanding. We try to operate out of our own, false self-sufficiency. The anxiety that gets the better of us is the fear that we will not be taken care of. Anxi-ety of this sort stands as a deep mistrust of God’s Providence, of God’s Fatherly protection of us. Anxiety makes us doubt that love is enough; it makes us doubt God Himself.
With this in mind, we can un-derstand why the Catholic philos-opher Louis Lavelle labeled anxie-ty as the opposite of purity. For the pure of heart is one whose life is focused and whole, open and disposed to receive every gift. But anxiety “unfailingly creates a divi-sion in the soul.”
The advantage of anxiety Anxiety is the voice of Jesus
calling us to Him and away from ourselves. In this respect, it re-mains a great help to holiness. As Servant of God Elisabeth Leseur observed:
“In times of anxiety and suf-fering, God sometimes gives, in that deep place in the soul where human torments can no longer reach, movements of joy and an in-tense awareness of spiritual reali-ties, so that one can return to life with its struggles and sorrows. Di-vine illumination makes the road more luminous and enables us to see our destination” -Rev. J. Cam-eron, O.P.

AT THE HOLY SEPULCHRE Within this hollow cave, so sad and
lone, Among the silence of a garden lies He Who is dead and Who, they say,
will rise, Renewed with life from out the
lifeless stone. Around it stand the hopeful
trees—His own, By which He walked; those olives,
saintly wise With visions of Gethsemane, their
eyes A dew of tears, their lips a wind-
breathed moan. Here lies a God!—and dead, be-
cause men die! Forsaken by the very ones with
whom He let His promise of the new Life
stand. Have you no hope, O sinners, none
to vie With all these trees?—Yet, see,
close to the tomb Stands Mary with a lily in her
hand! -Fray Angelico Chavez

VERONICA
Busy with household tasks ere Sabbath came, I heard the awful cadence of that cry,
Voices of hate and heartbreak intermixed— Jesus of Nazareth is passing by…
Is passing…passing…on His way to die.
I hurried out, with linen still in hand; Reluctantly, the soldiers gave me place.
The blood…the grime…I proffered Him the towel… Then all stood mute and shaken for a space
To see thereon the imprint of His Face.
-Helen Connelly

LXI: THE ANOINTING
It must have been the sweetest April rain Against the foothills of a mountain poured: Those tears confluent both of joy and pain,
The homage of a soul to heaven’s Lord.
The flowing locks that once excited
sin, Contrition’s finest symbol ever-
more, Swept gently over the salvific skin And ointment honored Whom the
skies adore.
Not many days remained, before these feet, That brought glad tidings to Jerusalem,
Would be bound up within a winding sheet, Pierced by a nail’s cold kiss and iron stem.
I wonder if those Pharisees that asked,
“Who is this man?” their answer found, at last. -Joseph MacKenzie

THE GLORIOUS FACE OF JESUS
A special characteristic of the devotion to the Holy Face in these times is devo-tion to the glorious Face of Je-sus hidden in the Blessed Sac-rament. Now that Our Lord is risen from the dead, no more to die, His Flesh and Blood in the holy Sacrament of the Al-tar are His glorious Flesh and Blood; and His glorious Face is as truly present in the consecrated Host as It is in heaven.
Therefore, let us seize this coin of infinite val-ue, cover it with our love, and offer it to the Father for souls!
PRAYER TO THE HOLY FACE
O Holy Face that smiled in lonely Nazareth! O Holy Face, our Mother’s priceless joy! O Holy Face, blood-swept in dark Gethsemane! O Holy Face, our sins would fain destroy! O Holy Face, defiled upon Mount Calvary! O Holy Face, our hope in heaven on high! O Holy Face of Jesus Christ our Savior! Turn, turn to us the hour that we must die!
