Yes, turkey season is a little over a week away, and I get excited when I see a strutting tom as he parades around on full display for the hens he’s trying to woo. I have promised Clay Henson I will take him turkey hunting this spring, so we need to make sure to capitalize on that. When the jakes (juvenile males) and toms strut for the hens, they want to be seen. Sometimes they will gobble, sometimes they will spit and drum (ask me later), but they will strut more often for the hens when it is time to go courting. Don’t we have people in the church like these strutting turkeys? Some people just love to be seen. In 3 John there is a man called Diotrephes who is described by John as one who loves to be first in the church (9). John is not too descriptive here, but Diotrephes is a character the church does not need. When there is someone who loves to be first, they like to be noticed. This kind of person wants the attention of everyone around him, kind of like a strutting turkey. The next time you see a turkey in full strut out in a field while you’re driving down the road, think about our congregation. If we’ll all do our part to make sure we are not a Diotrephes, we won’t have anyone who loves to be seen and demands attention. The turkeys have a way of making their bodies look all puffed up when their feathers stand up and their tail fan spreads out. This makes them appear much larger than they really are. Doesn’t pride do that to us? Nebuchadnezzar learned a very valuable lesson in the aftermath of his punishment by the Lord when he said “…He is able to humble those who walk in pride” (Dan. 4:37). Strutting Around

Spring is finally here bringing warmer temperatures, blooming trees, and the occasional sight of a strut-

ting turkey. Yes, turkey season is a little over a week away, and I get excited when I see a strutting tom as he

parades around on full display for the hens he’s trying to woo. I have promised Clay Henson I will take him

turkey hunting this spring, so we need to make sure to capitalize on that. When the jakes (juvenile males) and

toms strut for the hens, they want to be seen. Sometimes they will gobble, sometimes they will spit and drum

(ask me later), but they will strut more often for the hens when it is time to go courting.

Don’t we have people in the church like these strutting turkeys? Some people just love to be seen. In 3

John there is a man called Diotrephes who is described by John as one who loves to be first in the church (9).

John is not too descriptive here, but Diotrephes is a character the church does not need. When there is someone

who loves to be first, they like to be noticed. This kind of person wants the attention of everyone around him,

kind of like a strutting turkey.

The next time you see a turkey in full strut out in a field while you’re driving down the road, think

about our congregation. If we’ll all do our part to make sure we are not a Diotrephes, we won’t have anyone

who loves to be seen and demands attention. The turkeys have a way of making their bodies look all puffed up

when their feathers stand up and their tail fan spreads out. This makes them appear much larger than they

really are. Doesn’t pride do that to us? Nebuchadnezzar learned a very valuable lesson in the aftermath of his

punishment by the Lord when he said “…He is able to humble those who walk in pride” (Dan. 4:37). None of
