THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15, 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12

Luke 13:1-9 Brief Reflection: Jesus calls us to repent so that we might bear good fruit. God’s ways are not our ways. In order to bear good fruit, we must allow him to shape and mold our lives. This was not a new message that Jesus shared, but an affirmation of the covenant that God made with his people from the beginning. God is faithful – and so we are called to be. When we stray and wither or pro-duce bad fruit, we have the opportunity to repent and try again.

A Word from Fr. James… This past week we have had several days of very nice weather. God showed us that our dark winter days are coming to an end. As the weather starts getting nicer, we start anticipating outdoor chores and yard work and want to get outside. We clear out our gardens and look forward to the fruit and flowers that our gar-dens will start producing in a very short time. It is important that we do all this preparation so that our gardens will be fruit-ful. When we don’t take care of our gardens as we should, then often the result is that not as much good fruit will be produced.

Lent is a time for us to prepare ourselves for the fruit that we will later produce. If we don’t cut back the old growth, the parts of ourselves that have died from all the sins that we sometimes find residing there, and nourish and cultivate our souls, we will end up like the fig tree in the garden that we hear about in the gospel reading today. The master was simply going to take it out, but the gardener asked to allow him one more year to take care of the fig tree well and see if that makes a difference. If no fruit is produced after that, then the master can take the tree out. Well, we know that the tree did end up producing fruit.

This Lent we have the opportunity once again to produce much fruit. Where does God want us to cut back and cultivate so that our fruits will bear in our lives with greater abundance. May these Lenten days fill us with joy and hope in what is to come.

Lenten Blessings, Fr. James

PS: It has been brought to my attention again that people have received fraudulent emails in my name asking for iTune gift cards and other financial assistance for a “friend that I know that is in need”. I will never email you to ask for financial assis-tance through iTunes cards or any other kind of gift card. If you happen to get one of these emails, please check with me directly or with the parish office. Please do not reply to these emails or send them any money. There are several other priests in the Archdiocese that this has happened to as well. Also, please be sure to check and see that the email is from my email address, because upon further inspection, it is not my correct email. Please see me if you have further questions. Prayer Intentions

Let us pray for those who are sick in our communi-ty. Remember these parishioners and friends of the Parish in your prayers: Theresa Harvey Luis Moran and Maria Trinidad

Rex Davis (cancer and surgery recovery)

May you find consolation in knowing that you are thought of and prayed for in this time of need.

Please remember, DO NOT bring flowers into the worship space during Lent! or they will be discarded.

According to the Church’s Canon Law, all healthy Catholics from age 14 to 59 are required to fast and abstain from meat on Good Friday, and to abstain from meat on all other Fridays of Lent.

Thank you to all who attended the St. Louis Chicken dinner on March 10th. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare, cook, serve, purchase food and supplies, set up, clean up, etc. Your stewardship of time and talents are a blessing to us all. Our net profit from that fundraiser was $10,901!

The expansion of prison ministry is one of the pastoral priorities for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon as a Work of Mercy. And this is why I appeal to you in partic-ular, the Church in Salem and vicinity, to deeply consid-er this ministry. Four prisons in the Oregon Department of Corrections system are located in Salem. Over 3500 men are in custody in these facilities, men who need Christians, both clergy and lay, to respond to the Gospel call. You are invited to attend the Prison Ministry Conference at Mount Angel Abbey on April13, 2019, to learn more about the many ways you and your parishioners can serve. In addition to opportunities to enter directly into the prison or jail environment, there is need for volun-teers in re-entry, assistance to victims, and aid to fami-lies of the incarcerated. For information, please visit: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/prison-ministrv-conference-tickets-56605323045
