PASTOR’S DESK

On this third Sunday of Lent, the church provides us another moment of grace to straighten us on our journey. Today, we celebrate the Lord who frees us from our slavery to sin, if only we listen to His warning to repent. Hence, our central theme today is repentance. At times, we are tempted to view repentance as something unimportant. On the contrary, it is an important step to salvation. It is a way through which God’s grace is mediated to us. Repentance is, feeling sorry for the sin we committed, and a firm resolve not to deliberately commit it again. Sincere repentance provokes God’s compassion, mercy and love. In our second reading, Paul kindly reminded us of the consequences of deliberately going contrary to God’s will. He carefully traced the death of the Israelites to their inability to please God. That is to say, because they sinned against God. Hence, Paul concluded by warning us that: “All these happened as a warning, and it was written down to be a lesson for us who are living at the end of the age.” In his letter to the Romans he puts it directly: “The penalty of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life” (Rom 6, 23.)

In today’s gospel, Jesus was very direct in his words when he said: “Unless you repent you will perish.” One might say that this is too harsh to come from Christ who is merciful and compassionate. The truth is that when Jesus speaks this way, it does not diminish his compassion and mercy. Rather, he does so because he actually cares for us and sees what we cannot see. He simply warns us of the negative consequences of living a sinful life and wants us to repent and live a better life. This Sunday, the good news is that we are given the opportunity to learn from the failures of our ancestors and the consequences of their actions. We are given another opportunity to call upon the Lord who is “merciful, compassionate and loving.” Jesus wants us to take a bold and positive step towards amending our way of life. This is a call to repentance for the times we neglected and failed both God and our neighbors; for the times we choose evil over good; and for those moments we despaired and displayed remarkable lack of faith in God. The patient, compassionate and loving Father is ready to welcome us back. Hence, he says to us this season: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then…I will forgive their sin and will heal their land”(2 Ch 7, 14). Repentance attracts mercy, compassion, forgiveness and salvation. It brings about healing and restoration of hope for a better future. So, if we sincerely repent of our sins, God will not only forgive us, but He will heal us. May God grant us the grace of true repentance through Christ our Lord, Amen. God Bless, Fr. Canice

ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

En este tercer domingo de Cuaresma, la iglesia nos brinda otro momento de gracia para enderezarnos en nuestro viaje. Hoy celebramos al Señor que nos libera de nuestra esclavitud al pecado, si solo escuchamos Su advertencia de arrepentimiento. Por lo tanto, nuestro tema central de hoy es el arrepentimiento. A veces, nos sentimos tentados a ver el arrepentimiento como algo sin importancia. Por el contrario, es un paso importante para la salvación. Es un camino a través del cual la gracia de Dios es mediada hacia nosotros. El arrepentimiento es lamentar el pecado que cometimos y una firme resolución de no volver a cometerlo deliberadamente. El arrepentimiento sincero provoca la compasión, la misericordia y el amor de Dios. En nuestra segunda lectura, Pablo nos recordó amablemente las consecuencias de ir deliberadamente en contra de la voluntad de Dios. Él rastreó cuidadosamente la muerte de los israelitas a su incapacidad para agradar a Dios. Es decir, porque pecaron contra Dios. Por lo tanto, Pablo concluyó advirtiéndonos que: "Todo esto sucedió como una advertencia, y fue escrito como una lección para los que vivimos al final de la era". En su carta a los romanos, lo expresa directamente: "La pena del pecado es la muerte, pero el don gratuito de Dios es la vida eterna" (Rom 6, 23). En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús fue muy directo en sus palabras cuando dijo: "A menos que te arrepientas, perecerás". Se podría decir que esto es demasiado duro para venir de Cristo, que es misericordioso y compasivo. La verdad es que cuando Jesús habla de esta manera, no disminuye su compasión y misericordia. Más bien, lo hace porque en realidad se preocupa por nosotros y ve lo que nosotros no podemos ver. Simplemente nos advierte de las consecuencias negativas de vivir una vida pecaminosa y quiere que nos arrepintamos y vivamos una vida mejor. Este domingo, la buena noticia es que se nos da la oportunidad de aprender de los fracasos de nuestros antepasados y las consecuencias de sus acciones. Tenemos otra oportunidad de invocar al Señor que es "misericordioso, compasivo y amoroso". Jesús quiere que demos un paso audaz y positivo para enmendar nuestra forma de vida. Este es un llamado al arrepentimiento por los tiempos en que descuidamos y fallamos tanto a Dios como a nuestros vecinos; para los tiempos que elegimos el mal sobre el bien; y en esos momentos que nos desesperamos y mostramos una notable falta de fe en Dios. El Padre paciente, compasivo y amoroso está listo para darnos la bienvenida. Por lo tanto, él nos dice en esta temporada: "Si mi pueblo, que es llamado por mi nombre, se humillará y orará y buscará mi rostro y se apartará de sus malos caminos, entonces... perdonaré su pecado y sanaré su tierra" (2 Ch 7, 14). El arrepentimiento atrae misericordia, compasión, perdón y salvación. Trae sanación y restauración de la esperanza para un futuro mejor. Entonces, si nos arrepentimos sinceramente de nuestros pecados, Dios no solo nos perdonará, sino que nos sanará. A beautiful way to honor or remember your loved one is to include his or her name in the Mass Intentions. Fortunately, Mass Intentions are not for Sundays exclusively. At every Mass we share the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and we listen to the Word of God. If someone’s birthday falls on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday, do not fret, schedule an Intention and your loved one will be remembered even if you can not attend Mass. The donation is $10 per Mass per name.

WASHING OF THE FEET

Feet-washing symbolizes humility and service. Humility and service are fundamental virtues in the Christian life. To wash the feet of another symbolizes these virtues in the same way that the Eucharist symbolizes other Christian virtues. We are asking for five men and five women from our community who would be interested in having their feet wash on Holy Thursday, April 18th. Please contact the Parish Office.

LAVADO DE LOS PIES El lavado de los pies simboliza la humildad y el servicio. La humildad y el servicio son virtudes fundamentales en la vida cristiana. Lavar los pies de otro simboliza estas virtudes de la misma manera que la Eucaristía simboliza otras virtudes cristianas. STATIONS OF THE CROSS

We will be having the Stations of the Cross every Friday until Easter. They will be bilingual. One in the Chapel at 12pm and one in the Church at 6pm. Please come join us.

CONFIRMATION MASS

Next Sunday there will be a 4:30pm English Confirmation Mass. The Confirmation students will provide all Liturgical Ministers: Altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors and Ushers.

This week there will still be Religious Education classes on Tuesday and Wednesday. There will not be Confirmation class on Thursday because of the annual Youth Day.

**FIREWORK STAND MEETING**

An important meeting for all parishioners who will be working the Firework Stand in July is scheduled for Wednesday March 27th at 7PM in the Hall. This meeting will discuss work shifts, needs and all requirements we need to meet in order to have a stand this year. All ministry leaders are encouraged and requested to attend as all ministries are needed to be a part of the work force. This is a very important event.
