by Judy Jones Saturday, March 21st dawned sunny and clear with temperatures in the mid-30’s. The “SLAM THE DAM” walk/run committee quickly determined the wind to be coming from the east. The registration and starting set-up was at the east end near the shafts at light pole “88”. Finish line was on the west end, near light pole “1”. Sixty-plus brave walkers and runners began registering at 9:00 a.m. Participants were from as near as Fort Peck and as far away as South Carolina and Idaho. This week at the Legislature will be the hard discussions on medicaid expansion. Here are some interesting facts to ponder: Montana has a little over one million folks. There are 128,000 people on Medicaid, 145,000 on food stamps, on either side of 200,000 on medicare and I cannot find out how many are on child or housing support. If we (Legislature) add 70,000 more on Medicaid (some say that could be as high as 110,000) that would amount to 20% of Montana citizens on the Medicaid program! And, if the federal share would go away, Montana would not have the financial resources to sustain the program, especially with our country facing an almost 19 TRILLION dollar debt! Cutbacks are already being seen by the Feds. There are 11 states that now have more people on welfare than they do employed. They are California, Illinois, New Mexico, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Ohio, New York, Maine and Hawaii. In the fiscal year 2012 the U.S. Senate Budget Committee reported that with food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits, the average U.S. household below the poverty line received $168.00 per day in government support! Here is the problem: the median household income in America is just over $50,000.00, which averages to $137.13 a day! The average job pays $20.00 per hour AND welfare pays $30.00 per hour!

An article in a recent “Investors Business Daily” provided interesting statistics from a survey by the United Nations International Health Organization and this is NO conservative committee! The % of men and women who survived a cancer five years after diagnosis was U.S. 65%, England 46% and Canada 42%. The % of patients diagnosed with diabetes who received treatment within 6 months was U.S. 93%, England 15% and Canada 43%. The % of seniors needing hip replacement within 6 months was U.S. 90%, England 15% and Canada 43%. The % of folks referred to a medical specialist within one month was U.S. 77%, England 40% and Canada 43%. The last stat, of many, that I will provide is the number of MRI scanners per million people was U.S. 71%, England 14% and Canada 18%. What this shows that both England and Canada have national health insurance and until Obamacare — which is just now kicking in — the U.S. had NO national health insurance! If Canada’s national health insurance is so good then why are so many Canadians coming to Montana and the U.S. for treatment? On a lighter note it was great to have the high school students from Hinsdale visiting last week. Their chaperons were former Montana House Rep. Jeff Pattison and Dick and Jan Marshall. These great students are our future leaders in Montana. See you next week. ~ Sen. John C. Brenden

Senator Brenden reporting: we’re headed for a train wreck

around to visit with each other. It was an awesome accomplishment for those involved—now when they look at the dam they can say they have walked or ran that distance. Many were heard to say how much fun it had been and want another one… some even said there should be a walk/run on the fall equinox, also. One ambitious person finished the 4-mile route, turned around and ran back, getting in on an 8-mile run in. As for the Fort Peck Senior Citizens, they were thrilled that the inaugural event went so well. Over $400.00 in entry fees and donations was raised toward their current table/chair project to purchase 8-foot tables and chairs for the Recreation Hall that can be rented for personal use. A special thanks to all involved with making the 1st “SLAM THE DAM” (Run With the Wind) event a success!

Who do you want to see in the Final Four of The Montana Mint 2015 Pizza Championship Bracket? You can vote to send your Montana pizza place to the Final Four by going to the Northern Broadcasting website, www.northernbroadcasting.com and go to the “Flint Report”. Here’s the first round summary from The Montana Mint: Like the real March Madness, the MT Pizza Bracket saw some upsets, some close races, and some dominant performances from the top seeds. The biggest upset of the weekend was Rosa’s Pizza of Bozeman knocking off #1 seed Gallicano’s of Anaconda. Gallicano’s was a HEAVY favorite to make the Final Four out of the Pepperoni Division. Other surprises included #15 seed The Pit Stop out of Lincoln knocking off Vu Villa Pizza in Butte, and #13 Me Too Pizza out of Culbertson getting past Tarantinos. Let’s get Glasgow’s Eugene’s Pizza to the Final Four! #3-seeded Eugene’s of the Pepperoni Division is up against Guido’s First Avenue Pizza in Billings. Scobey’s #11-seeded Ponderosa of the Sausage Division faces 3rd-seeded Jane Dough’s of Joliet.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to improve handicap and pedestrian accessibility within the Northeast Montana Fairgrounds in Glasgow. The proposed project includes constructing new handicap parking along the southwest side of the commercial/grandstands building; and constructing approximately 1900-lineal feet of sidewalk within the fairgrounds. Proposed work includes a network of sidewalk that will connect the main parking lot and new handicap parking area to the main grandstands, commercial building, office, stage, concessions, restrooms, needlework building, culinary building, 4-H building, livestock barns and existing sidewalk leading to the Valley Event Center. The project is tentatively scheduled for construction this year depending on completion of all project

development activities and availability of funding. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed. For more information, please contact Glendive District Administrator Shane Mintz at (406) 345-8212 or CTEP/TA Program Engineer Mike Wherley at (406) 4444221.
