We’re Adding 4,000 sq.ft. to Serve You Better!!The Ashley Furni-

The NEW Frigid-aire Appliances Gal-lery added to the store over a year ago, has been very well re-ceived. “Our partner-ship with 500 Ashley HomeStores and our buying group, has kept our pricing ex-

tremely competitive,” Mark says. “And the selection of cook-ing, refrigeration, and laundry is out-standing.” They also carry Electrolux, a premium brand with exclusive features and

exceptional quality.

That’s what they say. Here is what we have to say. The entire

staff uses this product. It is super concentrated, needing less

than a tablespoon of detergent per load, which saves you

money and the environment. Speaking of the environment,

the Excelsior detergent is phosphate free, bio-degradable and

solvent free, so none of that gets into our rivers and lakes.

We also have a refill program which saves you even more.

Come in and talk to us about it.

xcelsior HE Laundry Detergent is a revolutionary product offering amazing value, resulting in unsurpassed cleaning and performance, leaving clothes fresh and clean!

E

Making a DifferenceFront Load, and now manytop load washers offer some of the largest energy savingspotential in your home. Afront load washer uses 65 litersof water per load. A traditionaltop load washer can use up to140 liters per load. That’s over200,000 liters of water savingsover the life of the washer! Not to mention the money yousave on electricity. Traditionallya washer uses 420 KwH peryear. By switching to a frontload washer you will be using142 KwH per year.

In our project we converted; 75 watt halogen bulbs to 18 watt LED’s

60 watt incandescent to 13 watt LED’s

Magnetic ballasts to electronic

32 w fluorescents to 30 w fluorescents

Featuring a state-of-the-art lithium polymer battery and a unique fully-parallel hybrid architecture, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offers excep-tional fuel economy along with a seam-less driving experi-ence. For 2014, the Sonata Hybrid adds a third-generation audio interface with integrated rear-view camera and LED inte-rior lights as standard equipment.HYUNDAI HYBRID BLUE DRIVE

The Hyundai-de-veloped Hybrid Blue Drive architecture is a fully parallel hybrid drive system capable of operating on an electric motor, a gas-oline internal com-bustion engine, or a combination of the two based on driving conditions.

Thanks to this ad-vanced architecture, Sonata Hybrid offers fuel consumption ratings of 5.4 L/100 km in the city for the entry-level model, 5.5 L/100 km in the city for Limited models, and 4.9 L/100 km on the highway for all trim levels. Combined output of the vehicle’s Blue Drive system is 199 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque.ELECTRIC-ONLY OPERATION

Using a high-output 35 kW electric motor and a powerful 47 kW lithium polymer bat-tery pack, the Hybrid Blue Drive powertrain maximizes electric-on-ly driving capabili-ty. With the kinetic energy recovery and charging efficiency af-forded by the 35 kW electric traction mo-tor, the Sonata Hybrid can be powered in

all-electric mode more often and for longer periods of time.GREAT RIDE AND HANDLING

A new intensive care unit and upgraded electrical system for the East Koote-nay Regional Hospital was greenlighted by the province.

“I recall in 2000, Maclean’s Magazine portrayed our hospital as the poster child for how bad rural health care was in Canada. Today, this new intensive care unit complements a new ambulatory care ward, new diagnostic imaging centre, new emergency room, new entrance

and many new specialists,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, on behalf of Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid.

Target marked its official Grand Opening in the Tamarack Centre on Friday May 24th, 2013. The mall ad-ministration staff welcomed the Target team who was presented with a card

The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel welcomed Damon Colgan as its new Director, replac-

ing Garry Anderson who retired at the end of April after running the Museum over the past 30 years.

“I think most museums would be satisfied with a national historic designation relating to its train sets, an excellent archive collection, and the stun-ning 1906 Royal Alexandra Hall,” said Colgan. “But you also have two massive miniature train sets that are being restored in the lower gallery, and space for a new Cranbrook Local History Museum in the upper gallery. This Museum really has it all, and I’m looking forward to working with the Board, donors and volunteers to realize its full potential in the years ahead.”

In 2012, Denham Ford began construction of its new dealership, and on Sep 9, 2013, the staff moved into their new home at the north end of the strip. Six months later, it is nally beginning to feel like home! The build was not without its issues and delays, but through it all, the staff and management strived to provide the same level of excellent service that

they’ve become well-known for. In fact, Denham Ford recently earned ve awards in the Black Press Reader’s Choice Awards for 2014, solidifying their place in the community as an exceptional service provider. This year also marked their third in a row, earning the President’s Award from Ford Motor Co. This is considered Ford

of Canada’s highest dealership honour, and is presented annually to those dealerships who demonstrate outstanding achievement in sales and customer satisfaction.

“Earning these awards is a direct re ection of what we set out to do, on a day to day basis - offer the best customer service and value, at a fair price”, says Braydon Denham,

General Manager, “and I couldn’t be more proud of our team for achieving this, every day.”

For those of you who have not yet stopped in to see them, they invite you to please take the time and drop by for a coffee, and a chat with our sales and service teams. Any of the staff will be more than happy to give you a tour. Just be

sure to ask for a tour of their formidable, 14-bay, state of the art shop - the store’s most impressive and exciting feature.

Braydon and his staff wish to extend an extra special thanks to their customers, and the community for their enduring support over the last ve years, and throughout the transitioning of the store; and they look forward

to serving you and your families for many years to come.

Please stay tuned for Denham Ford BC’s of cial grand opening, to be held in May 2014! You won’t want to miss it!

Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce

Cranbrook’s past,

present and future is directly and inextrica-bly tied to the decisions of entrepreneurs. From our first determined and visionary entrepreneur - Colonel James Baker

– to business people investing in Cranbrook today, the choice to put capital, resources and time to work is a cou-rageous one, and it’s a choice that shows com-

mitment to, and belief in the future of our community.

The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce, with its nearly 500 members,

actively supports those bold business inves-tors in our commu-nity. Named as BC’s Chamber of the Year in 2011, the Cranbrook Chamber believes that

this City and this part of the Kootenay region are on the cusp of some-thing exciting. We rec-ognize that we’re going to have to work very hard, together, to make it happen.

From a Chamber per-spective, we want to see a dynamic new economic strategy for this commu-nity, a strategy built on the unique advantages we can offer to investors. While many communities in western Canada and the Pacific Northwest chase the same business sec-tors, we need to decide - together - what we want in Cranbrook, and then become the very best in Canada at going after it. Ideally, the Chamber would like every member to understand and sup-port our economic devel-opment strategy so they can be our sales team for Cranbrook’s future.

With at least $100 million coming in to our economy each year, tourism is one of the areas we can pursue. We can become the area’s “base camp,” host-ing visitors who come to explore our acces-sible wilderness and our authentic heritage and cultural attractions, taking advantage of the fact that we have the largest tourism infra-structure in the East or West Kootenay, not to mention the Canadian Rockies International Airport, major high-ways and a railway. What we don’t have – yet – is a clear tourism brand, an organization with a laser-beam-like focus on tourism, and packages of experienc-es that keep people here for days rather than hours. That’s already in the works. But to be

successful, we all rec-ognize the need to build a diverse economy so we don’t have all our eggs in the same fiscal basket.

And when potential investors – from inside or outside the com-munity – show up on our door-step want-ing to start or expand a business, they must be welcomed, warmly and with open arms. We need a “how-can-we-help-you?” atti-tude. Through active advocacy on behalf of business, the Chamber of Commerce is now working with elected officials and staff from the City of Cranbrook to create an investment environment that is inviting, efficient and clear on processes, tim-ing and costs.

Along with a focus on economic development, the Cranbrook Chamber is also working very hard to ensure that busi-nesses succeed. We’re doing this by provid-ing opportunities to net-work with each other, to develop professionally and to celebrate excel-lence. And although we all hear the silky siren calls from Alberta and the US to “come and shop here,” we’re look-ing for new ways to encourage Cranbrook and East Kootenay resi-dents to do more to sup-port local businesses.

Ultimately, a thriving business sector leads to a wide range of eco-nomic, social, cultural and environmental benefits for a commu-nity. In Cranbrook, that takes significant effort and collaboration. We believe we’re all up to the challenge.

by Brian Coombs

Cranbrook has seen a lot of changes over the years and while some of them haven’t been as good as oth-ers, it has indeed grown and become the economic hub of the East Kootenay re-gion.

Currently, the Cran-brook and District Chamber of Com-merce lists nearly 500 businesses on its web site. These businesses range from advertis-ing to sport and recre-ation and everything in between. Of special note is that the city boasts 45 manufac-turing and industrial operations and 58 shopping and special-ty retail outfits.

Often overlooked in a city’s well-being however, is its educa-tional opportunities. The College of the Rockies is an example of a learning institu-tion that places real-life job opportuni-ties front and centre in what it chooses to teach to its students. Of course, the other industries such as for-estry, automotive and transportation and communications are other key aspects of the economy that re-quire skilled individu-als and are well suited to train local individ-uals to get careers in those fields.

The real estate mar-ket in the area has always been a strong performer in the lo-cal economy. Some would say that the city’s proximity to mountains, forests, lakes and of course, the Alberta border make real estate a nat-ural business to excel in, but as with most economic drivers, it requires a skilled and dedicated team of professionals to grow this important area business.

But the city isn’t stopping at what it has already garnered.

Currently, the city is reviewing its Eco-nomic Development Strategy and asking for the public’s input. The purpose is to set a course for the next five years.

It is also looking to work out a clear-er process for those

wanting to start a new business within the city. Hand in hand with this initiative is completing a new community profile in partnership with the Columbia Basin Ru-ral Development In-stitute.

Working to get new industry into the city and area is always something the city is striving to do, as stated in a recent ar-ticle written by Mayor Wayne Stetski. Some of these industrial opportunities could come from the new airport industrial lands.

This, and other en-deavours will not be easy, but then again, the residents of Cran-brook have always known that to pros-per, they have to do the hard work them-selves. It is this pio-neer spirit that made this community what it is and it is what will make Cranbrook more competitive and an even larger eco-nomic driver in the future.

The mayor prob-ably said it best in an piece entitled “About Cranbrook,” penned about the economic challenges the city faces and the citizens that will push the city forward.

“I knew you were great; otherwise I wouldn’t have run for Mayor. But I have learned first-hand over the last two years just what a caring, compassionate and generous community we all live in. I at-tend over 100 events a year where I see fund-raising goals reached, countless volunteers making a difference, and innovative ideas that move our great little city of 19,300+ forward in so many ways. There is an old African proverb that says “If you want to go faster, go alone. If you want to go further, go together.” We are a city that has mastered the art of going and growing forward – together!”

Expert judges have been particularly impressed with the performance of the Ram 1500’s all-new EcoDiesel V-6 engine, as well as its eight-speed TorqueFlite transmission, a combination that boasts a towing capacity of up to 9,200 pounds (4,173 kg). The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V-6 is among Ward’s 10 Best Engines for 2014. The mid-size SUV segment in Canada

In the mid-70s my dad, Water-bed Fred, was making waterbeds in his basement. I remember be-cause I burnt my hand on his tiger torch during one of his creations! Burned, brushed and lacquered was his specialty. Soon he opened a small store on Baker Street sell-ing waterbeds by day, and deliv-ering at night. For over 30 years, my mom and dad, AKA Fred and Glo, built a successful, customer focused business. When my wife Christine and I took over, we may have introduced a different style, but we were committed to keeping the same customer focus.Over the past 10 years, we have

continued to invest back into our business to make it a more enjoy-able place for our staff to work and our customers to shop. We have expanded our La-z-Boy gal-lery, dining gallery and mattress gallery as well as refreshed many other areas of the store with new paint and carpet. This year we are making a sig-

nificant investment in an area that our customers don’t see. We are streamlining our warehousing and delivery process which will provide an elevated level of service after the sale. We have always had great

people in our deluxe delivery de-partment; this just takes our pro-cess to the next level and through efficiencies, will make our business even more competitive. Our vision at The Bedroom Fur-

niture Galleries is to be the best fur-niture company in the area with the best service, value and selection. We also strive to be the most respect-ed. We know our customers have a choice when shopping for furni-

ture and mattresses. That’s why it is important to us that every day we try to improve. We are constantly looking for new products and better ways to showcase and deliver those products to our customers.

Our community is important to us. Cranbrook is a great place to live, work and play but we con-tinue to have an opportunity to make our city even better. Every year The Bedroom invests thousands of dollars in social programs, orga-nizations and charities. Christine and I are also very involved with JCI, the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce and City of Cranbrook committee work. To this end, our shared vision for Cran-brook is to see it grow, improve and prosper. As businesses succeed and grow, so will their invest-ments back into the City of Cranbrook.I would like to personally thank our customers

for their continued support. If you haven’t been in the store for a while, stop in and say hi. At The Bedroom Furniture Galleries, we make

your house a home.

Sincerely,

Joey Hoechsmann, Owner Operator
