The Faculty of Life Studieswelcomed two guest lecturersfrom the U.S. for a presenta-tion in the University ofAruba auditorium on Thurs-day evening regarding therole institution may play inthe dissemination of educa-tional materials, or as the de-bate suggests: the theft of anation’s intellectual birth-right.

The case in point: the ac-quisition of two collectionsby the University of Illinois,Chicago campus (UIC) li-brary, The Carberry Collec-tion from Jamaican NationalPoet H.D. Carberry, whichwas sold to the library by hiswidow, and a vast collectionof documents, diaries anddrawing from the founding ofSierra Leone by abolitionistsin 1787, as a refuge for es-caped and freed slaves.

Debating the issue were

Associate Professor EmiritaNancy Cirillo of the EnglishDepartment, UIC, now re-tired, and Peter Hepburn, aDigitalization Librarian at theRichard J. Daley Library,UIC. They were brought toAruba through the efforts ofRonny Alders of the ArubaNational Library and its Di-rector, Astrid Britten, with thelecture facilitated by the Fac-ulty of Life Studies at the Uof A.

The implications of the

long established policies of“conquering” countries or ar-rogant explorers and histori-ans appropriating andexporting objects whichcould most definitely be con-sidered the cultural heritageof the host nation, posesmoral and intellectual dilem-mas for curators and librari-ans; particularly when thoseorigins are not respected inoffering the materials for ob-servation and study.

Professor Cirillo cited thecase of friezes which origi-nally adorned the Parthenonas a classic example, put ondisplay in the British Mu-seum in the 1880’s; Greekscholars and the governmenthave long insisted upon theirreturn, to no avail. The pointwas made in the CarberryCollection that in this casethe books were legitimatelypurchased by UIC from Car-berry’s widow. They includemany rare first editions, in-cluding two by Nobel Laure-ates, and almost all areinscribed by the authors, giv-ing them additional interestand value. They are a testa-ment to the growth of intel-lectualism and literaryaccomplishment in theCaribbean regarding writingand publishing in English, aswell as providing a windowinto the culture of the variousislands, along with the per-sonal search for identity andsocietal struggles.

The Jamaica National Li-brary would have preferredthem to be donated, and re-fused first option for pur-chase as the cost was toogreat, but a widow has con-cerns for her welfare, andtheir value brought the inter-est of larger libraries aroundthe world with the money tobuy this rare collection, andso they were acquired byUIC. With some fanfare, in-cluding the presence of Car-barry’s widow, the collectionwas unveiled, during whichshe exhorted the library to“love and respect” the worksas they deserved.

Both Cirillo and Hepburndid express their dismay inthat this final wish is not

being observed; rather thanbeing kept intact for the his-torical and intellectual valuethe collection represents, ithas been broken up and filedamong many other books ac-cording to the Library ofCongress System, a policywhich again generates con-troversy and moral questionsamong scholars.

Making copies to donateto the Jamaica library is notas simple a solution as onewould think, as copyrightlaws prevent this; the ques-tion of digital disseminationvia Internet is also a thornyproblem. The books them-selves are kept in a rare bookroom, and so cannot leave thepremises and must be readand studied within it con-fines. The combination ofthese factors prevents themfrom being used for under-graduate studies or added tobook lists, begging the ques-tion: will their scholarly en-lightenment only beappreciated by a very deter-mined few working on a the-sis? Doubtlessly, this is anesoteric issue, but one thatplagues curators and librari-ans around the world.

The Sierra Leone docu-ments are fascinating and ofan age that their distributionis not beleaguered by copy-right concerns, but only afraction of the materials haveyet been digitalized and madeavailable. So again, the ques-tion of doing the collectionsjustice is a matter for consid-eration.

Astrid Britten and RonnyAlders thanked ProfessorsCirillo and Hepburn for theirenlightening lecture whilepresenting them with gifts oflocally published works ingratitude for taking the time, and for future projects. Pro-fessor Cirillo is part of a teamworking on a major exhibi-tion regarding slavery that isexpected to open in Chicagosoon and Mr. Alders ex-pressed the hope they may beable to bring the exhibit toAruba.

Nine of the 10 years alsocounted among the 10warmest on record, it added, noting that "climate change ac-celerated" during the firstdecade of the 21st century.

The trend continued in2011, which was the warmestyear on record despite La Nina-- a weather pattern which hasa cooling effect.

The average temperature in2011 was 0.40 degrees Celsiusabove the long term average, said the WMO.

"This 2011 annual assess-ment confirms the findings ofthe previous WMO annualstatements that climate change

is happening now and is notsome distant future threat,"said WMO Secretary-GeneralMichel Jarraud.

"The world is warming be-cause of human activities andthis is resulting in far-reachingand potentially irreversible im-pacts on our Earth, atmosphereand oceans," he added.

The UN weather agencynoted that during the decade,"numerous weather and cli-mate extremes affected almostevery part of the globe withflooding, droughts, cyclones, heat waves and cold waves."

Historical floods hit East-ern Europe in 2001 and 2005,Africa in 2008, Asia and Aus-tralia in 2010.Global precipita-tion -- including rain or snow-- reached the second highestaverage since 1901. The high-est average was recorded forthe decade 1951-1960.

Meanwhile for the NorthAtlantic basin, the 10 yearsmarked the highest level oftropical cyclone activity, in-cluding Hurricane Katrinawhich struck the United Statesin 2005 and Cyclone Nargiswhich hit Myanmar in 2008.

SEOUL (AFP) - Nuclear ex-perts at a forum Friday urgedworld leaders to take strongersteps to protect global atomicstockpiles from terrorists whenthey hold a major securitymeeting next week.

Leaders or top officialsfrom 53 countries includingUS President Barack Obamawill gather in Seoul Mondayand Tuesday for the NuclearSecurity Summit on safe-guarding fissile material andreducing stockpiles.

Leaders agreed at the firstsuch summit in Washington in2010 to secure the most vul-nerable nuclear materials fromterrorists in four years.

But the experts, speaking at

The experts discussed is-sues ranging from potentialcyber attacks on nuclear facil-ities to the potential threatposed by nuclear-armed NorthKorea.

Graham Allison, director ofHarvard University's BelferCenter for Science and Inter-national Affairs, warned of a"catastrophic effect" shouldthe North under its new youngleader sell its atomic technol-ogy to terrorists.

Debate still raging on site for super-telescope JOHANNESBURG (AFP) -An international consortiumplanning to build the world'smost powerful radiotelescopeis still debating whether SouthAfrica or Australia shouldhost the $2 billion project, anofficial said Friday.

Scientists hope the SquareKilometre Array, or SKA,will shed new light on funda-mental questions about theuniverse, including how itbegan, why it is expandingand whether it contains lifebeyond our planet.

The SKA board of direc-tors met Monday in Manches-ter, England, where theproject is headquartered, todiscuss the still-secret recom-mendation of the best host forthe hundreds of antennas thatwill pick up faint signals fromacross the universe.

The board on Mondayagreed to pass the site recom-mendation to the members ofthe consortium, which is setto meet on April 3 in Amster-dam, it said in a statement onits website.

"It is not likely that thismeeting will make a final de-cision on the site; rather it willbe the start of a process of dis-cussion and negotiation be-tween the members," it said.

A decision had been ex-pected on April 4.

If South Africa wins thebidding, engineers will con-nect antennas in the aridKaroo region by remote linkto a network of dishes stretch-ing across southern and east-ern Africa and as far away asGhana.

Australia's bid puts thecore site at Mileura station, about 100 kilometres (60miles) west of Meekathara inwestern Australia. Other an-tennas would be distributedacross Australia and NewZealand.

The new instrument will be50 to 100 times more sensi-tive than today's most power-ful radio telescopes.

SEPANG, Malaysia (AFP) -Team bosses Friday balked atthe prospect of buying sharesin Formula One -- and urgedswift cost-cutting reforms tostop cash-strapped competi-tors going to the wall.

Leaders of six FormulaOne outfits painted a bleakpicture of team finances at theoutwardly glitzy sport, whosesupremo Bernie Ecclestone isreported to be considering a$10 billion share flotation.

Five of the group said theywouldn't buy Formula Oneshares, despite high profits re-portedly enjoyed by the gov-erning body, while the sixth,Lotus team owner and busi-nessman Gerard Lopez, re-served judgement.

McLaren team principalMartin Whitmarsh said someteams among the 12 racingthis season were battling to

"The fact is at the moment,we all know in this room thatthere's a lot of Formula Oneteams that are struggling tosurvive," Whitmarsh told apress conference after practicefor this weekend's MalaysianGrand Prix.

"Which tells us we're notdoing enough and that's whywe've got to keep pushing it."

"Thank God that our (Fer-rari's) situation is very good interms of our financial positionfor the future. But we knowthat the situation of FormulaOne is not so stable," Domeni-cali said.

he said, was easier thanks tolessons learned from a Bud-dhist monk.

But thanks to his job atDartmouth Dartmouth Collegeas President , there's a racieraspect to this serious and out-wardly placid man's life.

Kim's own partying mightraise eyebrows among hismore staid colleagues at theWorld Bank. Last year at theuniversity's "Idol" music con-test, the college president ap-peared in a studded whiteleather jacket, with fingerlessgloves, spaceman glasses andglowstick bracelets, to rapalongside students.

"I came up in here to makeit rock, light a fire, make ithot," he sings in a widely cir-culated video of the perform-ance, while doing a robotdance.

From the cheering in the au-dience, it appears the probablefuture head of the World Bankstole the show.

At Muscatine HighSchool he was all-American -- both classpresident and quarter-back on the footballteam.

"My childhooddream job was that Iwould play quarterbackeither for the MinnesotaVikings or the ChicagoBears," he said in an in-terview last week on theCharlie Rose televisionshow.

The 52-year-old's CV glit-ters with prestigious posts atHarvard Medical School andBrigham and Women's Hospi-tal, among others. An anthro-pologist, Kim is also one ofthe foremost actors in the kindof global health problems thatare often seen as nearly hope-less.

In the mid-1990s he workedin Peru to develop the firstlarge-scale treatment of mul-tidrug-resistant tuberculosis ina poor country, a program nowrun in some 40 other nations.

Between 2003 and 2007 healso led a World Health Or-ganization initiative to bringantiretroviral drugs to threemillion new HIV/AIDS pa-tients in developing countries, while a nonprofit he co-founded, called Partners inHealth, works with impover-ished communities every-where from Haiti to Russia.

That work has brought Kimfame in academia and globalhealth institutions, but the be-spectacled professor tapped byPresident Barack Obama tohead the World Bank is virtu-ally unknown to wider circles.

A closer examination re-veals a passionate characterprone to a surprising mix ofthe straight-laced and quirky.

From the day his parentsbrought him from South Koreato Muscatine, Iowa, at the ageof five, Kim was the arche-typal, breathtakingly high-achieving Americanimmigrant.
