• 20K – 30K workers (mostly paid, not slaves!) over 80 years
• 2.3M blocks of limestone each weighing 2.5 – 15 tons – no machines!
• Tallest building on Earth for 4500 years until 1889 (Eiffel Tower)
5
Great PROJECTS through History
Coliseum – Rome (72 AD)
04/19/23 5
• 4 contractors managed construction
• Took 8 years to build
• Contracts contained detailed work specs & requirements, guarantees, payment methods & completion time
• These approaches disappeared after collapse of Roman Empire in 5th century; re-emerged in Europe during Renaissance
“The Origins of Modern Project Management”, Patrick Weaver, www.mosaicprojects.com.au, 2007

• Original pilot replaced due to false alarm about measles
• Oxygen tank exploded 200K miles from Earth – mission (i.e. scope) changes from “Go to the Moon” to “Get home, alive!”
• Getting astronauts home required several unprecedented solutions
• Epitome of risk management & mitigation (“Failure is not an option”) “Apollo 13”, Wikipedia

Great PROJECTS through History
Avatar (2009)
04/19/23 9
• Development began 1994. Original release to be 1999; actual: 2009
• Total costs – original: $100M; actual $400M - $450M (est.)
• Production delayed because camera/filming technologies had to be invented to achieve James Cameron’s vision
• More than 1,000 people worked on production

Focus of PM Connect
Tom Skinner, PMO Director, EOEEA
1304/19/23 13
Top 10 Trends in Industry1. Leadership skills will be critical2. No industry will be spared from the war to find
qualified talent3. PMs will team with “change partners” and use structured
methods to facilitate adoption4. Agile will be seen from what it is ….and isn’t5. Competency Models will be core to managing
professional development and promotions6. Experiential learning will be the norm rather than the
exception7. Informal learning will gain momentum8. The PMP will continue its domination, but will no longer be
enough9. Outsourcing will remain a risky business10. Project sponsorship will become an area of focus in South
Asia
1404/19/23 14
Goals of PM Connect
• Align with industry trends
• Develop strong, vibrant, and unified voice
• Help the Commonwealth deliver projects better– Meet business and technical objectives– Ensure maximum return on its project investments
• PM Forum will provide an environment to: – Exchange ideas– Collaborate with other PM’s– Learn from each other– Build a stronger PM community– Develop skills, both technical and people– Become a better PM
1504/19/23 15
What do we mean by “better PM”?
• Everybody is a PM at some point
• Given the job w/o formal training and do well
• But, many Projects fail because…– Forgot to get tech team involved, no Production– No Marketing Plan, good system but no users– Didn’t gather good requirements, solution doesn’t meet
business needs
• You all have stories you can share
1604/19/23 16
Our Purpose
• To get like-minded people together
• Expose you to good PM practices and trends– PMI PMBOK and CommonWay
• Deliver better projects (start small)
• Be a Central Repository for PM information
• Know who else you can call
• Know that you are not alone
1704/19/23 17
How to make this happen…
• We need your help!
• Charter will be the foundation– ITD, EOEEA, and EOLWD co-sponsors– Demonstrates we are a formal organization– Can sustain PM Connect for years to come– Fluid document
• Volunteers are the glue – Meeting places– Speakers– Program Content (establish the agenda)– WIKI management
• Quarterly meetings (June 15th, 10-noon)
• Potential topics with outside guest speakers– PMI MassBay President
1804/19/23 18
How to make this happen…Round Tables
• Smaller groups that focus on one specific area of interest (6-12 members)
• Discussion on a specific topic
• Led by a Volunteer
• Meet at least once a month Group decides where and when
• Report back to PM Connect
• Eligible for PDU’s!
• Index cards – let us know if you’re interested
19
Possible Round Table themes
• Establishing and Maintaining a PMO Interested? Put on index card or email Tom Skinner
• Implementing Agile at the Commonwealth
• Troubled Projects
• Large Projects
• PMP Prep
• Others?
• Post on Wiki and broadcast to members
