Maxxis and Vice Mayor Yaokasin went around the city on March 18 targeting 100 women entrepreneurs operating sari-sari stores to be helped out. The City Vice Mayor said in order to be assisted, a sari-sari store should have been operating before Yolanda but damage due to the typhoon. “This assistance is for the people who has been there and operating sari-sari store and not for those who’s just starting out,” according to Yaokasin. The assistance will be in a form of goods worth P10, 000, the Vice Mayor said. The identified sari-sari store owners will receive the goods and will sign a contract that the goods will not be used for personal consumption and that the profit will be used for

re-investment. Part of the profit at the end of the year will be used by the sari-sari store owner for enrollment in Social Security System (SSS) and

PhilHealth. The Maxxis Tyres Company will have a monitoring team that will visit the sari-sari stores to make sure that the recipients are true to the contract they signed. According to Yaokasin, the Maxxis people went around the city on March 18 and 19 to identify the recipient sari sari owners and at the same time distribute the ten thousand worth of goods for each of the stores. It may be recalled that Vice Mayor Yaokasin has been pushing livelihood projects with the help of donors from non-government organizations. This is to make sure that the recipients will not depend on dole outs to get them back to their feet and improve their lives. Yaokasin feels that livelihood through entrepreneurship is one of Tacloban’s strength especially coming from the private sector with businesses. “I feel that this is the way to do it. We will help them and train them to become successful entrepreneurs, “added Yaokasin. (PIA 8 with Lizbeth Ann A. Abella)

Recognizing women’s role in rebuilding Leyte

The United Nations Population Fund, the Department of Social Welfare

and Development, the Philippine National Police, government and humanitarian groups working in Leyte recognized the remarkable strength of women and girls of Leyte through an activity held jointly on March 8¸the International Women’s Day. In celebration of the many achievements of women and girls of Leyte particularly in the rehabilitation of their communities, the province of Leyte joined the world in commemorating the IWD last March 8 thru a walk-a-thon and a program that highlighted health and protection for

women and girls. Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez acknowledged the remarkable feat of the women saying, “To all women and girls of Leyte, I commend you. You have shown remarkable strength during and immediately after Yolanda. You kept your families intact, you kept the communities intact. This day is for you.” Among the services provided during the event were free medical check-ups, legal consultations and haircut. Participants also enjoyed singing in karaoke machines, volleyball games and raffle of prizes.

Activities for children were conducted as well. In his message marking this year’s International Women’s Day, UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin reaffirmed UNFPA’s support to women and girls worldwide. “UNFPA is firmly committed to helping realize gender equality, women’s empowerment and sexual and reproductive health and rights for all, with an emphasis on the most marginalized, particularly adolescent girls,” he said. Oyales’ facebook account was swarmed with congratulatory messages one of which even stated “ansabe ni Yolanda” with what you achieved, referring to the super typhoon Yolanda that ravaged Leyte and Samar including Oyales’
