George Keats turning 90 years young!

George Keats, much loved and highly esteemed Patron (and former President and almost everything else), is turning 90 at Easter. George now lives in Yass but is still incredibly busy and active.

Norma and George celebrated their

60th Wedding Anniversary on 26 March.

EVENT REPORT - STORY OLDER AND SLOWER RIDE

SATURDAY 21.03.2020I didn’t know at the time that this would be the last official Club ride for some considerable time, with all events to be temporarily suspended. Anyway we got together for a chat and a coffee at Boathouse Café while deciding on a definite itinerary.

Paul Barber came along with his little Dingo (see the story somewhere else in this month’s magazine) but he thought the run would be a bit too much for the bike so took it home again.

I rode Kath’s 1953 Matchless “Max”, which started as easily as anything in the cool of the morning but needed help from younger and faster riders to persuade it to start once it was warm – thanks to Peter Boros and whoever else was running behind after lunch!

We went straight up Putty Road to East Kurrajong Road, left to Comleroy then right for the Mill Road Valley, up to Hermitage, into Kurrajong and around the Grose Vale Loop, back along Terrace Road and into Mac Park again for lunch at Boathouse – where physical distancing was underway but we could still sit at tables with seats well spaced.

It was good to have a selection of older bikes on this event like Ray Smith’s WLA (he left the gun at home for this ride). TToovey

FRANK SLOAN

Frank is having a very tough time at present, dealing with a succession of serious health issues. Members may be aware that he had one of his legs amputated some time ago and he has been amazingly stoic. Gwen is an unflagging support – just as she was in more active times.

Stop Press: Since this article was written, Frank has passed away after a long period in palliative care at home. We send our love to Gwen, who has given him her unflinching support through all his struggles.

Use of Vehicles under Conditional Registration For Essential Purposes

It has come to our attention that the NSW Police have pulled over a number of vehicles on conditional registration (H, D or J plates) and questioned whether their use is for essential purposes.

The Council of Motor Clubs (CMC) has sought clarification from the Policy Branch of Transport for NSW (RMS) and has received the following advice.

As long as club members follow NSW State restrictions, such as only going direct to the mechanic, the shops, medical practitioners, pharmacies or to work they are allowed to use HVS and CVS vehicles with the filled out log book.

That does not include trips to try the car out or charge the battery etc. As far as CMC interpret it. Those reasons could be considered spurious by any authority who pull a vehicle up and question its use.

There obviously can be no club events where people gather. CMC suggest that no club sanction or organise any such activity as fines are substantial.

Note that two unrelated people in the front seat of a vehicle are breaking the distancing rules. If they are not family or live with you then they are unrelated.

If you have not opted for the log book scheme then you cannot use the vehicle as there are no club events and going for a maintenance run is not considered an essential use.

If you are taking such a vehicle to a mechanic it is suggested it be for essential work and you have a prior appointment with the mechanic.

Go it alone is the safe way if you must go out in ANY vehicle.

It is suggested that members who do NEED to use a vehicle under conditional registration have a copy of this advice with them.

THE MOTO GUZZI DINGO

In 1963, Moto Guzzi’s traditional motor cycle range was joined by an unexpected diversion - a 49cc Dingo. The original pedal design was by Antonio Micucci, but the old dog started learning new tricks as the Dingo name carried over to other variants with a “Sports” kickstart model. The Dingo ceased production in 1976.

My Dingo (this model was produced from 1963-66) is one of the first produced, and was registered in Italy in February 1964. It was later exported to the UK and was road registered there when I purchased it in 2018. Paintwork is original, however I have had most of the silver re-chromed. The only work needed to get it on the road and onto club plates were new tyres & clutchplates. Unfortunately the speedo/odo does not operate as there is no gear wheel mechanism on the hub to run a cable but I am still searching Italy, UK, Spain and Germany, and I am also searching for a rack to complete the bike. A recent addition is the hand pump! MTMCRPC awarded this bike the under 100cc trophy at last year’s show.

Hand pump and the black tool box under the seat is handy for storing log sheets! And a lovely addition to the lounge room.

THE MOTO GUZZI DINGO...continuedI‘m not aware of the Dingo being available in Australia and I understand there are now only 7 registered in the UK.

DETAILS: 1963 Moto Guzzi Dingo “Tourisimo” 49.8cc 2 stroke, 9mm Delorto carb, 3 Speed (integrated clutch 3 speed twist grip) gear box Wheels 18” Accessories: 2 Toolboxs and hand pump Pedal forward to “kickstart” Brakes - pedal back for back brake. Front brake is usual right hand lever.

PS: Do you know why it was called a Dingo? Neither do I. But if you think you know please tell me. Their models are usually named after Birds (eg Falcone or Cardellino = Goldfinch), Places (California, Nevada, Le Mans), or describes the bike itself (Normale, Motoleggera = Light motor, Lusso= luxury). I think “Dingo” in Italian means the same as here, so at this stage I assuming it is named after our native dog???
