FLORIDA AIRSTREAM CLUB MARCH 2019 PAGE 1 GOOD LIFE NEWS Suwannee Sweetheart Rally, Feb. 12 - 19, 2019 FROM OUR PRESIDENT The 2019 rally schedule started owith a bang! The February Sweet - heart rally hosted by the Pooles and Allen’s was a huge success. We had folks from three other clubs join us. A good time was had by all. Bill ( the Presidents driver ) commented that Susan and David Poole have set a new standard for super organized rally schedules and packets. Thanks Susan!!! Be sure to plan ahead and make your reservations for future ral - lies so you can join us! See you on the road! Lyn Behnke Forty-four people (22 rigs) and 7 dogs who attended the Suwannee Sweetheart Rally had a great week, filled with activities, games, themed potlucks, and special events. Three days were designated for paddling activities. David and Susan Poole guided about 16 paddlers (and 1 dog) in their kayaks or canoes down the Suwannee River and Ichetucknee on short (3-6 miles) and long trips (12-13). The Suwannee River levels were still high and most of the springs were flooded by the river, but the current made paddling easy. Ichetucknee Springs, also called the “Crown Jewell of Florida” was crystal clear and we saw three manatees, mullet, turtles, otter, and a variety of water birds (blue herons, white egret, anhinga, cor- morants, and osprey). Another activity was bicycling. Ten people rode bikes together on the 14 miles of paved bike path from the campground to the river, and others rode or walked the path at their leisure. Others explored local restaurants, visited state parks in the area, or relaxed near their Airstreams. In addition, several dogs made new friends and played together in the fenced dog park. Two of the games oered were a Newlywed-style contest and Joker (card/marble board game). On Valentine’s night 9 cou- ples were contestants in the Airstream-themed not -so-newly- wed game, played by 9 couples and scored/judged by 5 others members. George and Pam Millis won first place and Hei- di & John Tayman won second place with their intuition of how their partner would answer questions such as favorite trip destination in their Airstream, length of their rig, and how many items with Airstream logo, name or picture they had with them. The Joker Tournament started with 16 players and ended with 4 players in a tie-breaker playogame. It came down to one marble left per person, with partners Chris Allen and Mike Swegles combining their cunning to win first and second prizes, respectively. Everyone participated in the themed-potlucks, one of which was Hobo Stew around the campfire with David Poole as the Hobo Chef called “Some Guy”. Valentines’ night was “Sweetheart Potluck” with steak shish kabobs, soups, salads, strawberries, and other tasty dishes start - ing with letter S. Another night was a “Chili Cook -o, which ended with a four -way tie, so after drawing names, first place went to John and Susan Pezzoli, second place to Jeand Susan Poole Ichetucknee Springs paddle L-R Lynn Behnke, Steve & Deb Oppe

Dawn Denius, third place to Steve and Deb Oppel, and honorable mention to David and Patsy Barr. The President’s Day potluck featured favorite dishes of presidents from George Washington to Donald Trump (and many in between). The special events included a guest speaker, Tom Mirti, who came from the Suwannee Riv-er Water Management District. About 24 peo-ple learned more about the District and their projects to model the river and reset minimum levels and flow. About 10 couples drove to Steinhatchee, FL and attended the Fiddler Crab Festival, where Susan Poole won one of the Fiddler Crab races! Others participated in the campground events, such as karaoke/trivia night, Pigeon races (Kathy Morgan won third place on the previous weekend!), and Chicken Poo Bingo (Chris Allen won first place!). Where else can you do so many activities with wild life?On the last day, some members played an impromptu game of Pickle Ball, a few played their ukuleles and sang, some rode their bikes, a couple paddled, and some rested up. A few tried bowling on the camp-ground’s cleverly-built red-neck bowling alley (mechanically operated with ropes, levers, and pulleys.) The

busy week was capped off with “Movie and Popcorn Night”, featuring “The Wild President” (paddling documen-tary by Jimmy Carter)” and “Long Long Trailer” (with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz).Everyone had a good time and expressed interest in returning again next year. We even had four couples from other WBCCI units join or renew their affiliation with Florida Airstream Club. So, it was a successful rally renewing old friendships and making new ones. It was our pleasure to coordinate this rally and share our love of the Suwannee River and this campground with oth-er “young” fun-loving Airstreamers and their dogs.

MARCH RALLY, HILLSBOROUGH RIVER STATE PARK MARCH 14 – 18, 2019Rally hosts: Bob & Lyn Masters with lots of help from Mike & Maryanne Swegles, Ron & Chris Allen, Vicky Digby, Jerome & Joyce Hoffer, and Jeff Krabel.

The March 2019 Rally will be held at the Hillsborough River State Park, a majestic area of nearly untouched Florida wilderness with the Hillsborough River rolling through, sometimes lazily, at other times developing class II rapids. Bring your own kayak or canoe or you can rent one from the park. Bicyclists can ride on two desig-nated trails in the park, 1.6 and 2.2 miles long. If you don’t bring a bike along, you can rent one from the park concessionaire. There is a total of 7.3 miles of hiking trails with interpretive displays both in the woods and along the river. For those who would rather shop or learn more about Florida history, we know of attractions in the local area for you too.We have planned the rally activities to give those who want to paddle, hike, bike or tour the local area time to

pursue their interests; free time is scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Scheduled activities include a trailer tour and idea swap, a tour of Fort Foster (a Seminole War fort), a Bingo tournament and the Straw-berry Classic Cruise-In in downtown Plant City. We won’t go hungry, we’ll have two pot luck dinners and two full breakfasts. The Fisher House of Tampa, located adjacent to the James A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital is about a thirty minute drive from the park. We have arranged to take a tour of their facility on Friday, March 15. Since it is a residential facility and they cannot take large groups, they limit the tours to 15 people. If we have more than 15 people who would like to see an example of a Fisher House, our club’s Community Fundraising Project for 2019, we have two tour times set up, one at 10:30 am and the second at 1:00 pm. Please note that there are items we can bring to make the Fisher House residents’ lives easier during their stay. You can find a list of those items in Chris Allen’s article in this newsletter.Information about the March Rally at Hillsbor-ough River State Park has been sent out via email to all who have registered. If you didn’t receive it, please contact Lyn Masters at [email protected].

For questions and booking:Please contact Steve Kane at [email protected] with a subject line of “ Bluegrass/BBQ Fest Rally “ (just copy and paste from here :) We’re excited as this is our first time hosting a rally. We look forward to seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and making great memories! Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

This is low amperage, shared water rally. It’s like, glamour boon docking !! Please plan on having less than 10 amps to power your goodies. No AC or Heat Pump, please. Most will use their propane for their refrigerator and, if needed, the furnace. Please also plan on “camp coffee” as coffee makers usually blow the circuit we share. Laura and I boil water with propane and make a French Press or Pour Over style. Bean grinders are usually ok, so bring your best!

A water line will be supplied, but you’ll need to have a Y adapter with you to take a line to your rig and an end for your neighbor’s. Make sure to empty your tanks beforehand as we do not have a sewer hook up or dump station.

We look forward to seeing you as we take advantage of this bi annual chance to camp at Ft. Christmas, help others, hear some fun music, eat great food, and see each other!

Sunshine Committee Report

Frank Carson will have a third surgery on his shoulder when he returns to his summer home in New Jersey in May. Frank suffered two seizure attacks in December and since then has been seeing various specialists to determine the reason for the seizures and how to prevent them from reoccurring. They have a trip scheduled to tour the West in September but there are doubts that Frank’s health will permit this adventure.Dave Wenger’s oncologist was encouraged by the results of his last scan. No new areas of growth in his lungs and very little growth of the nodules is present. Please remember to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Please let your Sunshine Committee Chair, Betty Wenger (407-921-0658) or [email protected] know of anything you would like to be included in this column.
