Kindergarten Orientation

Kindergarten Orientation is a time when incoming kindergarten students are able to visit our school to meet our kindergarten teachers and become acquainted with our school environment. This year, kindergarten orientation for Present UPK Parents will be held from 9:30 a.m.—11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21. An invitation will be sent to our present UPK parents for their orientation date. We are asking that only UPK parents attend this kindergarten orientation. UPK students will be receiving their “orientation” through an on-site transition program. In this program, our UPK classrooms will be partnering with kindergarten classrooms to learn more about kindergarten through a series of learning activities during the school day.

Kindergarten orientation for newly registered students will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 from 9:30—11:00 a.m. and 1:00—2:30 p.m. Students new to the district are invited to attend this program with their parents. Sign up for this program takes place at kindergarten registration for newly-registered students. We look forward to meeting our new kindergarten students and their families. Welcome to the Primary Education Center, where we strive to create a dynamic, joyful learning environment for all of our students. If you have any questions about Kindergarten, do not hesitate to contact me at 286-7220.

The Flu– A Guide for Parents

What is the “flu”?

The flu, or influenza, is a viral infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu is spread from person to person by coughing, sneezing, or touching hands or surfaces with the virus on them. The flu season is generally from October through April with peak months December through March.

How can I protect my child?

Get the flu vaccine for yourself & your child. Flu shots can be given to children 6 months and older. Children younger than 9 years old who get a vaccine for the first time will need two doses. Encourage your child’s close contacts to get the vaccine. This is very important for children younger than 5 or for those with chronic health problems such as asthma, diabe-tes, cardiac, or immunosuppressed illnesses.

Wash your hands often & teach children proper hand washing. Wash them for as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice (20 seconds). If soap & water are not availa-ble, use hand sanitizer. Rubbing it into the hands until the hands are dry.

Cover your coughs or sneezes. If you use a tissue, quickly throw it away & wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue or hand washing facilities, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

Stay away from people who are sick.

Keep your hands away from your face. Avoid touching your nose, mouth or eyes.

Clean surfaces (desks, sinks, door handles, etc) with soap & water & disinfectant. The virus will live on a surface for 2-8 hours.

Signs & Symptoms of the “flu”- fever cough

headache sore throat chills runny or stuffy nose

body aches diarrhea or vomiting (sometimes)

What should I do if I think my child has the “flu”?

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks a lot of fluids

Call your child’s health care provider for advice of medication use. Never give your child aspirin or medicine that has aspirin in it. It can cause serious problems.

Call 911 for any difficulty breathing or difficulty waking.

Keep your child home from school & away from other people until they have no fever without the use of fever reducing medication and they feel well for 24 hours.

What is Multiage?

A Multiage classroom is comprised of students of mixed ages grades 1st-3rd. Children spend the entire three years with a team of teachers that is truly a family unit. It promotes unity, diversity and success through developmentally appropriate educational practices. Multiage classrooms reflect the natural groupings found in our neighborhoods, communities and in the world, and provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas, modeling of behaviors, practice of responsibility and nurturance, and development of leadership and social skills. Several principles and practices are foundational to multiage classrooms:

Teacher is the facilitator of learning (rather than the keeper of knowledge)

Developmentally appropriate, child centered, continuous learning

Integrated Curriculum

Attention to the education of the whole child Multiage focuses on abilities not deficiencies, with an emphasis on differentiated learning.

How Children Learn in a Multiage Classroom

Children learn best as active, not passive learners. Students learn and construct knowledge as a result of meaningful experiences. They learn actively through collaboration, play, social interaction, imitation, music, “hands-on” activities, drama, art, movement, reciprocal teaching and cooperative learning. These are some of the most “brain-compatible” educational practices that the Multiage classrooms feature.

Multiage Happenings

Classroom Daytime Open House

We cordially invite anyone in our community to stop by and visit our Multiage classrooms (Green Wing) Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.! Come have a cup of coffee and see how our program works!

Multiage Information Night

We invite all parents of Kindergarten and First grade students to share an evening of information and conversation regarding our Multiage program. Learn the answers to these questions:

• What is a Multiage Program?

• Is it for children of all learning styles and abilities?

• Is it appropriate for my child?

• What does it look like at Lewiston-Porter?

I would like to nominate Andrew Seguin. During writing workshop he needed help, so he was proactive because he motivated him-self to write even though it was tough. An-drew was confident in himself and his writ-ing at the end of writing workshop. Andrew understands the reward you get from hard

work! Nominated by Mrs. DuMoulin

Most Valuable Team Players

Julie is a great friend. When I returned her pencil to her she said,

“Thank you”. - Trinity

Whenever I look at Julie, she is always doing something good. I see

Julie as a leader. -Caleb

I would like to recognize two hard-working students, Gavin and

Brennan. They are focused and on-task during lessons. During WIN, they were role models to the oth-er students by raising their hands, eager to participate in the lesson.

They took initiative over their learning and worked hard to stay focused during the entire lesson. Great work boys! Your hard work

shows! Nominated by Mrs. Kowlaski
