It needs to be a warm greeting with all of the snow and cold weather we have had this winter! We just had an amazing month of February here at the school with many exciting and important events and activities happening. We are also looking forward as we move into March and what wonderful opportunities the spring will bring for our stu- dents and hopefully some warm, snow free weather ☺. The winter Olympics were incredible and many of our students had an excellent day of getting into the Olympic spirit earlier in the month as they participated in the HSS Winter Olympics. We just recently hosted our local Science Fair where sever- al budding scientists put together some amazing projects! On the theme of bud- ding scientists, our grade 6 students enjoyed a trip to TELUS Spark Science Cen- tre. Our grade 10 students had the opportunity to work through a 2 day workshop and obtain their Standard First Aid Certification. Students learned about respect during our annual Pink Shirt Day with part of the lessons coming from a guest speaker, Alvin Law. We had an excellent basketball season this year with many teams representing our school. In particular a big congratulations to our Junior Girls Team who were champions of our entire league. Well done girls! Now, bad- minton is just around the corner and many students are looking forward to batting around the “bird”! Coming up in March we have several Junior High and High School students off to a leadership conference, many of the grade 7 and 8 are participating in a ski trip and the Kiwanis Music Festival is running all next week. We want to send out our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Maxine Noren. Maxine was a long time teacher in Carstairs who genuinely touched so many people. She will be deeply missed. Thanks to the overwhelming support pro- vided at Maxine’s Celebration of Life tribute that occurred at the school this last weekend. The family is collecting donations in Maxine’s name for a school scholar- ship. If you would like to donate, please contact the school office. Report cards are coming out on March 22 nd . Remember, we have gone paperless this year with High School report cards, so please log into your Power School Ac- count to monitor your child’s progress and get complete mark update on the 22 nd . Parent Teacher interviews are scheduled for March 27 th and 28 th . We will be send- ing out information for appointment bookings over the next few days. Please stay in regular communication with your sons and/or daughters teachers in order to en- sure learning success. Our next School Council meeting is on Wednesday, March 21 st . You are welcome to come out and provide input into the school through this important committee. I certainly appreciate the parents, students, school staff and school community who all work tirelessly to make Hugh Sutherland School the wonderful school it is. If ever you have any questions, please call us anytime or drop in to the school. With HSS pride, George Thomson, Laura Lee Hrabok and Dean Nielsen

One-to-One Reading Program

Hugh Sutherland School will be starting a new session of its One-to-One Reading Program in March and we are looking for more committed volunteers to read with our younger students! Our spring session will run from March 5th until May 31st. Volunteer expectations: Commitment of at least 1 hour per week to read one-on-one with stu-dents. One morning or afternoon of volunteer training during the week of March 5th-8th. A crimi-nal record check, child welfare check, and confidentiality agreement. This is an excellent opportunity for family members to become involved in student learning and to support and encourage literacy at Hugh Sutherland School! Students greatly benefit from having one-on-one reading time with adults and it helps children learn literacy skills for life. For more information, please contact Michaela Allen at [email protected] or 403-337-3326. We look forward to working together with families in the community to build strong readers and help students develop a love for reading.

With the exception of some crazy weather, semester two is well underway. Grade twelve students should be up to date with Di-ploma marks through MyPass. All high school students should set up a MyPass account. Please see Mr. Hronek if you have not already done so. If you find your child would benefit from extra tutor support as we progress through , semester two, please contact Sheila John-son, [email protected] at the school. We will do our best to coordinate this service with you. Scholarships : Please refer to our current scholarships under the High School tab on our website. Many of these scholarships have deadlines. Don’t miss out! Several of our high school students are capitalizing on an opportunity to participate in two Dual Credit programs offered through CESD and Olds College. These students have dedicated their Fridays off to head to Olds College for Welding and Agriculture Tech programs throughout the semester. These opportunities expose students to life as a Post Secondary student, while still having the support of our school to guide them. These 9 students will earn both high school and post secondary credits. The fol-lowing picture was taken at the Ag Tech Orientation evening at the Olds College Trades building where students will practice their skills hands on in the shop. If interested in future Dual Credit opportunities, please contact Mr. Hronek. Meanwhile, grade 10’s put in some extra work to earn Standard First Aid Certificates at school through the Canadian Red Cross. Thank you to Instructor Tammy McMow for all her extra time and effort to help each student be successful. Please see below the following reminders and opportunities: Grade 10 orientation: If you have a student going into Grade 10 there is a meeting Wednesday April 5, 2017 at 7 pm in the Learning Commons. Where Students Come First!

Page 7 March 2018

Assessing our impact on student success A Message from the Superintendent This month’s newsletter theme of ‘Assessment’ provides the perfect opportunity for us to share our pride in the great accomplish-

ments of our students and the dedicated staff who support them. In Chinook’s Edge, we measure student success in a number of ways. This includes provincial achievement data, of course, but it also includes information about whether our students are reading at grade level, if they feel safe at school, and if they feel equipped to continue striving toward their goals after graduation. Our division-wide focus on literacy, academic excellence, social

emotional framework development, and career development is setting our students up for success. We are pleased to see an increase across the board in the number of students who are achieving both levels of Acceptable and levels of Excellence in Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams. This is an important indication that our strategic focus is impacting students at every grade level in Chinook’s Edge. Our clear goals, along with the commitment of staff, students and

parents, is leading to great success for our students. Kurt Sacher, Superintendent

*Inclement Weather Update*

We are reviewing our Inclement Weather practices following the winter storm on February 8th, when it was deemed a Yellow Day and buses in Chinook’s Edge weren’t running. In retrospect, due to the potential safety issues this created for staff and high school students, we likely would have classified this particular day as a Red Day in some of our schools. Each Inclement Weather day is unique, and each present different challenges across our large division. Our ongoing review and discussions are based on the priority of safety considerations for students and staff. Following this review, the likelihood of a Red Day is higher than it has traditionally been.

There are several issues that might necessitate a Red Day at a school, in a community, or throughout the entire divi-sion. Facility issues, such as extended power outages, for instance, may also necessitate a Red Day. Most often a Red Day is declared because the roads are unsafe for travel for students, parents and staff, due to a winter snowstorm. It is vital that parents have clear back-up plans in place for the care of their children on Red Days when their school is closed.

It is also imperative that parents are familiar with our Inclement Weather protocols (which are available on school web-sites and the division website). To ensure highest safety, parents are reminded that on a Yellow Day at your child’s school (meaning that buses are not running, but schools are open and classes are being held), our schools still require you to contact them if your child will be absent. Some parents may choose to drive their child into the school when their school bus isn’t running, while some parents will choose to keep their child at home that day – and schools can’t make assumptions when safety is at stake. Parents of bus students: please contact your school to confirm if your child will be absent on Yellow Days.
