March 2019 Fern Tree Community Association NEWSLETTER

Fern Tree Carols , 15th Dec 2018 A large group of enthusiastic carollers, young and old, came along to the Carols on Sunday 15 December. Due to uncertain weather conditions, the event was held in the Community Centre, nevertheless it was a wonderful evening of carol-singing and community spirit. The event was organised by Julia Fredersdorff and Rachel Meyers, with Dave MacNamara on the piano. Christopher Lawrence was the host, with singers Alison Farrow and Andrew Short (funded by Hobart City Council). The sound system was organised by Greg Gurr and Gregg Ransley, while the ladies from St Raphaels served hot drinks and mince pies during the breaks, which was a great bonus. In all, it was a very enjoyable event. Can you help? The Community Association is seeking assistance with the compiling and production of the FTCA Newsletter. If this interests you, please email [email protected].

Can you help? Small, friendly dog needs a foster home, preferably in the Fern Tree area. 20-month old chihuahua, male, sterilised. Has own kennel, bowl and lead, but is in great need of company. Email [email protected]

FERN TREE FIRE BRIGADE NEWS

Locally, the last couple of months have been fairly quiet, with a couple of road crash incidents and 2 dry-lightning strike vegetation fires. Further afield, during January's more extreme weather, our Brigade was excluded from the initial statewide responses to the dry-lightning fires in the Huon Valley; we were held in reserve to respond to any Western Shore vegetation fires in the Hobart urban/bushland interface. Now that the weather has moderated we have been tasked to do a number of shifts on the Riveaux Road/Air Walk fire, in the Castle Forbes Bay and Geeveston areas. This is still an active fireground and is likely to be so for some weeks yet. Summer still has a couple of months to go. Please be vigilant to the possibility of fire starts in your area and activate your Bushfire Survival Plan when the need arises. Remember : PREPARE, ACT, SURVIVE. Stay safe, Garry Sullivan AFSM, Brigade Chief.

Re-development of FERN TREE PARK The Fern Tree Park upgrade was due to commence in late February, but has been suspended temporarily while issues are addressed. How-ever, at the time of publication, the two 80-year old gum trees near the church are scheduled for removal in late February. They have been assessed by an arborist and need to be removed. However, some of the new playground furniture will be made using wood from these trees. This was explained by Council representatives at the FTCA AGM in April 2018. It is considered safer and more practical to take them down at this stage in the Park Re-Development Plan.
