The shortest month of the year has just passed us by. It was a busy one with a skating trip, a ski-trip, some special activities and a performance for Black History month, and Term One Report Cards! We celebrated the many special events and highlights of the month at our February Scorch Assembly during which we enjoyed a presentation from our Grade Two class. Special thanks to Ms Zuccarelli and Ms Hamilton for all of their hard work in preparing for that showcase! During the short month of February, the great giving spirit of Kenollie families continued as Kenollie students, parents and staff once again rallied to raise funds to help others. Our Candy Gram sales in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada raised over $1500.00! Some of Grade One students organized a Rainbow Loom sale that raised money to add to our Children’s Wish Foundation campaign. Finally, some of our Grade 4 students with the help of their parents, Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Freeman lead a campaign to create Relief Kits for refugee families living in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Thanks to generous donations we were able to assemble 16 kits and have some cash donations as well. What a great giving month! Working together, staff have planned some additional educational activities for the remainder of the school year. Here are just some of the highlights! Bridge Building (Saturday, March 4) Scrabble tournament (Monday, March 6) Day of Pink (April 10) Talent Showcase (Week of April 10—14) 2nd annual Excellence in Eloquence speech competition (April 19) Earth Day (April 21) Education Week (May 1—5) Spring Concert (May 3 @ 9:30 am and 1:30 pm) Movie Night (May 4) Math-Tastic Open House parent event (May 5) Lots of intramurals for various grade levels Technology day (date tbd—in May or June) Lego Primary Research Showcase (June 15) Special thanks to the many staff and parents who support all of these events! Our skipping team also continues to practice weekly in preparation for this year’s Jump Rope for Heart event (June 9). As in the past, we will have a “Jump Day” where students will all get outside and get active! Please be sure to watch your weekly Thursday Electronic Envelopes for specific dates, details and reminders. You won’t want to miss out! This month our school success teams have also been working collaboratively to plan the professional development sessions for the remainder of the school year. During our February 17th PD day staff worked alongside our Superintendency’s Student Achievement Officer—Lindsay Sirois to learn more about the role that the Mathematical processes play and the different types of problems that our students are expected to solve. The collaborative learning will continue as teachers set new goals for Mathematics instruction and develop plans to achieve them. Staff are also “Leading from Within” as lead teachers are stepping forward to deliver targeted PD to colleagues during our upcoming monthly staff meetings. For example, next week Ms Hamilton and Mrs. Giannone are teaching us about Google apps for education and how to use Google classroom. In April, Ms Newton-Faulkner is leading us all in a learning session about effective reading instruction. As a former Early Literacy teacher, we are fortunate to have her expertise within our school! As always I look forward to continuing to share information with our community about ways Kenollie is working hard to improve student success! A special thank you to all our Kiss and Ride volunteers for their hard work during the busy and cold months of winter. Your dedication to student safety is very much appreciated by the community. A special thank you goes to Carmelina Chiofalo-Chung for all of her coordination of our Kiss and Ride. Each month, Mrs. Chiofalo-Chung meets with the students to celebrate their success and to talk about safety! We are very proud of this program and the legacy continues thanks to the hard work and dedication of our many Kenollie families and the leadership of Mrs. Chiofalo-Chung! We can’t thank you enough for all of the work you have done to keep our students safe by maintaining our Kiss and Ride Program!

Annual Offence Declarations due from Volunteers

The Primary (Grade 3) and Junior (Grade 6) EQAO provincial

assessments will be completed in the mornings on these dates:

May 23 May 29

May 24 May 30

May 25 May 31

Attendance is very important. Please try to schedule

appointments and holidays for another time.

Parents play an important role in the development and

education of their children and in the success of the school

community. At Kenollie PS we welcome and encourage the

participation of parents and community members, and are

grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute

throughout the school year.

To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short

interview with Ms. El Refaie and a criminal record check. A

criminal record check is required for all school volunteers in

Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field

trip, you need this record check.

Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the

Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All

returning volunteers will receive an Offence Declaration form

that must be filled out and returned to the board office each

year. Completing the Offence Declaration will ensure that you

can continue volunteering in the next school year. Expect to

receive the form in February.

Please give your completed form to

Mrs. Morrison or mail it back to our Human

Resources Dept. using the return envelope provided.

for the Dads’ BBQ!

In 1983, the Kenollie Community set out to build a playground for students. The first fundraiser was known as the “Community BBQ”. Over time and due to the fathers who co-ordinate the event it came to be known as the Dads’ BBQ. Once again this year’s event aims to raise funds to benefit our kids and our community.

Thank You! The support over the recent years has been tremendous in raising the funds for the new playground equipment and improving the learning environment at KPS, as well as solidifying the Dads’ BBQ as a great community event. This year the 35

th Dads’ BBQ will be

directing the proceeds towards the outdoor learning space, planting more trees, as well as further improvements to the soccer field and the playground.

We know that your children will be looking forward to this fun event and are excited to see your involvement.

Please contact the Dads’ BBQ Committee at [email protected] to let us know if you’re interested in helping out. Also, if you have any interesting items to donate to the silent auction we’d love to hear from you.

The Dads’ BBQ planning sessions will begin at the end of March, please come out and join us! Again, thanks to everyone for their time and support! We are proud and thankful of all the fathers who volunteer at the BBQ and all of the families that come out to support us!

Looking forward to seeing you on

At the Peel District School Board, we are committed to providing safe and efficient transportation services for our students to and from school every day. Transportation staff do their best to ensure that buses arrive and leave on time, but sometimes, delays happen. Information about delays may not always be available through the school, especially if they happen outside of the school day. The best place to find information about bus delays and cancellations, as they happen, is the Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) website at www.stopr.ca. To find information specific to your child's bus, you will need the bus route number.

With the growing number of social media sites, it is no surprise that social media is the most common form of communication for children and teenagers. Posts, status updates, comments, instant messages, video uploads, tweets and texts have become a regular part of their lives. While there are many positive benefits to using social media, including staying connected with friends and expressing your interests, students must be cautious in their use of these networks.

Among the most popular social media platforms used are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and Whatsapp Messenger. Many of these platforms are free and are available on smartphones and other electronic devices. These platforms are easy to navigate and often allow information to be shared instantly, not only with friends, but with strangers. On social media, it is important to remember that the world is watching.

Here are some tips, provided by the Canadian Safe School Network and GetSafeOnline.org, to keep your children safe and help them make smart choices when using social media:

Set some boundaries for your child before they get their first ‘connected device’ (mobile, tablet, laptop or games console). Once they have it, it can be more difficult to change the way they use it or the settings.

Have a conversation about what is appropriate online behaviour and what actions could have huge repercussions that could damage their reputation and be harmful to others.

Talk to your child about the kind of websites they look at. Encourage them to speak to you if they come across something they find worrying or upsetting on websites, games or social media.

Discuss with your child what is safe and appropriate to post and share online. Written comments, photos and videos all form part of their ‘digital footprint’ and could be seen by anyone and available on the internet forever, even if it is subsequently deleted.

Explain to your child that being online doesn’t give them anonymity or protection, and that they shouldn’t do anything online that they wouldn’t do face-to-face. Users should only accept people they know in order to protect themselves from spammers, strangers and others who may be using social networking sites to commit crimes.

Unlike when they’re meeting someone face-to-face, children don’t always know who they’re actually ‘talking’ to online, even if they think they do. Tell your children they must never email, chat, or text with strangers, and it’s never okay to meet a stranger in the real world.

Ensure your children set their privacy settings appropriately. Take the time to learn how privacy

The Peel District School Board implemented the Ministry

of Education’s revised Health and Physical Education

(HPE) curriculum in the 2015-16 school year. The

Peel staff will again teach the human development and

sexual health component to students, beginning spring

2017. This provides time for teachers to develop strong

relationships with their students prior to this phase.

Advance notice letters will be sent home with students

two weeks prior to the human development/sexual health

lessons. Families can submit religious accommodation

requests at any time prior to the lesson by contacting the

school directly.

settings work on your children’s favourite sites, and teach them how to control their privacy.

Tell your children never to share personal and private information with anyone online. This includes, but is not limited to, his or her full name, age, birth date, address, phone number, social insurance number, credit card information and parents’ full names.

Limit the amount of time that your children spend on social media platforms and talk about the importance of healthy and appropriate use of technology.
