Songwriter Frederick Weatherly composed the words in 1910 and paired them to the music of “Londonderry Air,” an old Irish melody. With lyrics about longing for home and loved ones, the song has often been used as a final farewell since its early days; it resonated with those saying goodbye to family members during times of war and with emigrants leaving their homeland for America. During lunch on St. Patrick’s Day our own Belmont residents have tried their pen at Irish song writing. Here are a couple stanzas from last year: Belmont’s Irish Drinking Song 1. March Is “Brain InjuryAwareness” Month
When we think or hear of abrain injury, we refer to it as eitherorganic, brain tissue or toxicchemical destruction, or physicaltrauma. There is another type ofbrain injury that is nowcommonly known to us, PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).We are faced by many morechallenges with the prevalenceand high incidences of PTSD.PTSD has been in existence formany years. It has been suggestedto be the results from anemotional response toenvironmental events withunderlying psychological trauma.We see more and more cases ofdiagnosed PTSD especially amongcombat soldiers, “Our Vets” thatcame home from the war. Wehave seniors in our Community
that were in World War II, Koreanand Vietnam War. Most of themdo not like to talk about thedetails of what they haveexperienced during the war. Somedon’t like to talk about it at all. It’semotionally disturbing to them.
PTSD presents the characteristicsymptoms of high anxiety, hypervigilance, irritability, difficulty tocalm down, negativity,exaggerated reaction to stimuli,some become anti social ordifficulty with interpersonalrelationship. The trauma is socomplex that resulted fromrepeated, prolonged exposure tomultiple forms of interpersonaltrauma, often under certaincircumstances where escape is notpossible. In order to understandthe complexity of PTSD, we needto know the different perspectiveof the disorder. We need morehealth care professionals orproviders that will focus ontreating and assisting thoseindividuals especially thosevictims of war. Challenges withPTSD has just begun for the newgeneration to come.

The Neighborhood is ready forsome spring time weather andfresh vegetables. This month wewill be enjoying our gloriousgardening boxes in theNeighborhood courtyard. Wealready have a thriving tomatoplant, but we will soon beplanting many more vegetableseeds. Hopefully this spring wewill have a successful crop of freshfruits and vegetables to use indelicious recipes.
Circle of FriendsMarch is going to be such a
great month. There are so manyevents to celebrate! First we haveSt. Patrick’s Day, which is alwaysfun! We will celebrate withfabulous festivities at the buildingand then go eat Irish fare at
Brendan’s Irish Restaurant onMonday the 21st. Easter is also inMarch this year. A beautifulbrunch will be served at Belmont.This month is letting the COFtaste such great treats. In ourweekly cooking class we will try tomake some of the wonderfuldelicacies we have tasted!

This free bimonthly supportgroup is held on the second andfourth Tuesday evenings and ispresented by the Alzheimer’sAssociation and Coast CaregiverResource Center. It is open tocaregivers, families, and friendsof loved ones with variousdementias caused byAlzheimer’s, Lewy Body,Parkinson’s, vascular, stroke,brain injury, or cancer.
