You Know Who You Are! You Know What to Do!

Okay, I will admit that I am a bit of a Facebook junkie. Yes it is great to keep up on family, friends and parishioners who share the happenings of their lives with this social media. What I most enjoy is when people share tidbits of wisdom often in the form of quotes from current and previous great thinkers. The problem with these bits of wisdom and thought is that they stand in isolation moored to nothing that can allow us to fully grasp or understand the intent of the author.

make room for worship. Budgeting of our resources is reshaped as we embrace tithing and generosity. The social issues of the day; homelessness, victims of war or natural disaster are no longer seen as merely other people's misfortune but our opportunity to serve and help. Are you a child of God? Then you know that you are loved by the creator of the Universe who has been revealed to you in the saving actions of Jesus Christ. To know this truth is to KNOW WHO YOU ARE. And if you know who you are then you know what Jesus said about loving your neighbor and to know this truth means you KNOW WHAT TO DO.

So let me leave you with another Kierkegaard quote; “Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” May you embrace the truth of your faith and come to experience the fullness of God's eternal love.

Peace, Pastor Kevin

A Labyrinth ….. What’s That?

Grace has a new tool for ministry! This winter we were able to complete a project that has been in the dreaming stage for several years. We put together the funding to purchase a Labyrinth! I can’t wait for you to see it and experience the profound joy and peace that can come from walking on it.

So, what is a labyrinth, you ask! Very simply, a labyrinth is a circular pattern that contains a circuitous pattern within it. Veriditas, a National Labyrinth Society, describes walking the labyrinth in this way: “….a personal practice for healing and growth, a tool for community building, an agent for global peace and a metaphor for life.” You can read much more on their website: http://www.veriditas.org/faq.

Like so many items and practices in our world and in our faith, the labyrinth is an ancient design that has had many uses throughout civilization. Christians adopted the shape of the labyrinth, particularly in medieval times when labyrinths were built into the floors of cathedrals. The one that has survived to this day is located near Paris in the Cathedral in Chartes, France. This labyrinth was built in 1201 when the cathedral was rebuilt after a fire. The Modern Labyrinth Movement was begun by the Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress when she and a small group of people moved the chairs off of the labyrinth in Chartes so that they could walk on it.

While a labyrinth and a maze are similar, they are not the same thing. A maze is a puzzle with many paths, including false leads and dead ends. The labyrinth on the other hand is a single path that leads to and from the center. A Christian will notice the outline of the cross in the labyrinth. There is no right way/wrong way to walk a labyrinth. You cannot get lost. You need to go at your own pace and allow the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts.

Here at Grace we will be dedicating the labyrinth during the 9:00 Worship Service on Palm Sunday, March 20. That day, we plan to have the labyrinth set up in the Theater so that you can stop by to see it. Then during Holy Week, it will be set up in Grace Hall, where individuals can stop by to walk the labyrinth during posted hours. The next opportunity to use the labyrinth will be Sunday, April 3, before and after the Quiet Worship Service.

If you have never had the experience of walking a labyrinth, I hope you will give it a try. It is a wonderful opportunity for prayer and reflection….you can focus on your own needs or you can pray for the needs of the world. God will be with you in the journey, whether it be walking the labyrinth as a metaphor for life, or in life itself. In our fast-paced, noisy, world, we need quiet, sacred spaces in order to be refreshed so that we can hear God speak. I am grateful for the opportunity to add this wonderful tool to the ministry that we share here at Grace.

Member Update

Donald and Nancy Michael, long-time members of Grace, have moved to Lorien Taneytown (Lorien Assisted Living, Apt 104, 100 Antrim Blvd, Taneytown MD, 21787). Donald is in the skilled nursing facility and Nancy has an apartment in the assisted living side. They are very happy to be able to live in one facility that can accommodate both their needs, as Donald is then able to spend most of his time with Nancy. They would be very glad to receive their friends and guests from Grace, and Nancy is very appreciative of the flowers that she received in January. Thank you!

Westminster Good Friday Cross Walk

Each year, the Westminster Ecumenical Ministerium hosts a Good Friday Cross Walk. It is a fantastic gathering of people of all ages and denominational backgrounds. It takes about an hour to walk from the place where the walk ended last year to the place that it will end this year! Once we’ve arrived at our destination, the local congregation provides a brief worship service inside their sanctuary. Along the way, there are several brief stops that include a meditation, prayer and song.

This year, we begin at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church and will go to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. The walk begins at 11:00 and the worship service begins at 12:00 noon. This is a wonderful way to gather with other Christians and to witness to our Lord’s great

sacrifice on our behalf. There is always a good contingency from Grace. If you’ve never attended, this year would be a great time to start. If you want to meet up with friends from Grace so you’ll have someone to walk with, just ask one of the pastors.

Come to pray and light a candle for your loved one!

Historical Society Box Lunch Talks

The Historical Society of Carroll County (www.hsccmd.org) holds monthly Box Lunch Talks (BLT) for the community to attend. These talks are held on the third Tuesday of every month at Grace Lutheran Church in Grace Hall at 12 Noon. (The information below is taken directly from the Historical Society’s information brochure.)

The March topic will be “In Search of Frederick Dielman, 1847-1935.” Frederick Dielman, who spent his childhood in New Windsor, had a 60-year career in the arts as an illustrator, painter, teacher, lecturer, and academician. After studying in Germany, Dielman (nicknamed the “Terrapin” for his Maryland roots) returned for the Centennial Exhibition and then opened a studio in New York City.

Clark Taggart looks at Dielman’s life, his work, and his position at the center of the art world.

Participating is inexpensive and easy! Parking is free on the Carroll Street parking lot. Please enter the building through Entrance #2 (double glass doors) on Carroll Street. Attendees are asked to bring their lunch and will enjoy a small selection of beverages and desserts provided by Society volunteers. Please check in when you arrive! Admission is $3 for Historical Society members and $7 for non-members. Everyone is welcome to attend!
