Conversos – Continuing the ConversationWednesday, March 2, 7:00 PM Pollin ChapelPresenter: Rabbi Joshua Stampfer, Co-founder of the Society for Crypto Judaic StudiesAt the end of the 15th century, the Inquisition forced the Jews in Spain to leave or convert to Catholicism. Many of those who converted, or “conversos,” continued to practice their faith illegally and in secret. A large number of these conversos and crypto-Jews immigrated to Spanish American colonies, where enforcement by the Inquisition was less stringent than in Spain. During periods of persecution by the Mexican Inquisition, crypto-Jews migrated to isolated frontier areas, including northern New Spain, which later became New Mexico.

Our Leadership Hineinu

Hineinu. We are Here. GET INVOLVED NOWby Ilene Davidson, Engagement Task Force Chair

As we begin on the path to provide opportunities for our congregants to come together in many different ways, we ask each of you to join us. We hope you were able to attend our Hineinu Shabbat Service on February 26. We thank Rabbi Cahana, Cantor Cahana and Rabbi Joseph for leading us in such a special service and also thank Sydney Baer and Michelle Gradow, the leaders of our Celebrations Cohort, for organizing such a lovely welcome and delicious Oneg. Please let us know if you would like to join them in organizing other celebrations at CBI.

You’ve now received more information on our Neighborhood Circles and we hope you are reaching out to your neighbors to get to know them better and help one another.

Other ways to get involved this month include:

Empty Nesters +60We are forming a new group for CBI members who are 60 or older (or who want to hang with these engaging folks). If you are interested in meeting with contemporaries for dinner, theatre, happy hours, movies, and local events around town, this group is for you! An organizational meeting will be held on March 10 at CBI at 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. We will discuss the many activities our new group would like to consider. Bring your ideas! Please call Alyssa at 503 222-1069 to RSVP.

Be a Greeter!Welcome friends, congregants, guests and newcomers at Friday evening Shabbat services. It’s easy - you will ask people to wear a name tag, hand out the weekly announcement flyer, introduce newcomers to other members and answer the important questions in life – like, what are they serving at the Oneg?

Greeters arrive at 5:30, half an hour before services begin and stay a few minutes afterwards to mingle and enjoy the Oneg. Sign up online at www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/72791809806 and wear your best smile.

We Are Here to help you create what you envision for CBI. Whether it’s to learn more about any of these programs, to get involved in planning family events or welcoming new members, or to share your ideas, please contact Ilene at [email protected].

Purim Primariesby Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana

The Hebrew month of Adar is doubled this year – the very definition of the Jewish Leap Year. Adar I began in February – and now we are in the unusual time of Adar II. Double fun – perhaps double strange times. Don’t we know it!

Mishenichnas Adar Marbin B’Simcha! – “When Adar Begins, Joy Increases!” says the Talmud (Taanit 29a). And yet, the joyful holiday of Purim – when all the Jewish celebration is heightened – doesn’t take place in the first Adar of a leap year. That’s a bit odd, because we usually rush to do a mitzvah (which is why a bris is usually held in the morning. Why wait?) But for a Leap Year Purim we hold off on our celebrations for an entire month until the fourteenth day of the second Adar.

Why? Some believe that since Purim and Passover are holidays of Redemption (escape from destruction, escape from slavery) we try to keep them close together. Adding a month between them creates an untenable separation for a common theme. That’s not a bad reason.

But I also think that there is something about extending the anticipation of frivolity. We are reminded that in the seriousness of the world around us, we need to draw out our sense of the absurd.

Kind of like our Presidential Primaries.

For months now, we have been in “silly season.” Bloviating has taken the place of consideration. Theatricality has held our attention, not substance. The politics of the personal fills the media and there is no room for policy consideration or serious proposals.

It’s a leap year – the silliness seems to be doubled.

It is entertaining – and maybe it is fun to extend the entertainment. But even Purim comes to an end. The time will come – and I hope soon – when we can move past the silliness. The time will come when we can hear serious proposals and clarity on how they will be accomplished. The two main parties promote two very different versions of our problems and solutions; we need to be able to hear them, debate them and choose carefully. There are two very different visions of our nation and our future. We need to give them serious consideration.

But until then – enjoy Purim!

Developing CBI

by Jenat Levison FeldmanDevelopment Director

CBI strives to be a place where you feel embraced, safe, and inspired. Our programs and services are structured to be of the highest caliber, impacting lives through singing, socializing, and

(of course) learning. Your contributions enable us to provide these important programs and services. Thank you for working with us!

We at Congregation Beth Israel are poised to be the center for Jewish vibrancy in Portland. Our sacred space sets a natural stage for us to learn, to flourish and to experience pure joy. From our preschoolers to our most senior members, we are invited to dance, sing, and pray in our historical Temple. Whether we come together to celebrate Jewish life events, special occasions like the Martin Luther King Service and Celebration or lectures – our synagogue space provides both reverence and exhilaration. It takes funding to preserve this sacred space.

Our integrated arts program allows Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade classes to spend time each week in one of four different arts-based classes. These include art, dance, drama, and music. The inclusion of the arts in our program does not stop there! Our middle and high school classes frequently use intentional art to express what they have learned about Judaism. And on Sundays alone, over 300 students participate in this learning opportunity, making CBI the largest Religious School in all of Oregon. It takes funding to support these programs.

CBI prides itself on meeting people where they’re at – so to speak. Economically we have knocked down all barriers to both membership and Religious School enrollment so that we are accessible to all. In addition, we are making moves to meet in people’s homes and neighborhoods – bringing Judaism into your life physically and metaphorically – wherever you are and at every life stage. From bringing the Torah to preschooler’s homes, to singing and lecturing in the many senior communities in Portland, to actively engaging in Interfaith Social Action work, we are there for you. Other intergenerational programming includes: multiple services on the High Holy Days; Jews Next D’Or – programming that attracts hundreds of young adults to both pray and play together, nourishing both their hearts and their bodies through the connections they make here; engagement opportunities through Hineinu; Tot Shabbat gatherings-- and that is just the tip of the iceberg. It takes funding to provide these services.

It is our privilege to thank you for helping us create Jewish memories and impact Jewish lives, so we are honored to list all the donors who have made all this and more possible by making an annual contribution (formerly dues) above and beyond your giving level, contributing to our Every Family Initiative (EFI) Campaign, supporting either of our two major fundraisers (Fall Fundraiser or Taste of Temple) whether as a sponsor, a Mitzvah Moment or Recipe for Success donor, buying a Golden Ticket or into a House Party, or donating through the school registration fundraiser. It is truly thanks to each of you – that all this and more is possible. We invite everyone to join us and feel the vibrancy that comes with knowing your donation impacts lives.

Education Brotherhood

CBI Brotherhood Newsby Andrew Olshin, Brotherhood President

I am honored to serve as the CBI Brotherhood President for 2016 - 2017. Lot’s going on at CBI!!

I was thrilled to actively participate in the revelry created by CBI Brothers and Mothers and, of course, many others at Taste of Temple. Our MLK service was truly inspiring, we recently heard about local Native Americans from our own Tracy Prince, and Board Member, Dr. Sharon Meieran is running for a seat on the Multnomah County Commission. Not to mention we are in the process of searching for a new ED.

And we all know what happens in March!!!!

2016 Purim CarnivalHear Ye!!!! Hear Ye!!!! Come One, Come All!!!!

All kids and kids at heart are invited to

the Annual Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 13th following Religious School. Lunch will be provided for $5 per person.Hope to see you there!!!!

My favorite hero, The Donald said today “I’m trying to be more understated.” What does that mean?? Please feel free to email me any time at [email protected] with any insights you would like to share–or just to say hello or ask a question, etc.

A Great Year to PARTY!by Sarit Cahana, PARTY President

It’s been a great year for PARTY, CBI’s high school youth group. We have held an event every month and have many coming up ahead.

We started the year off with our board learning about their leadership roles in programs created by yours truly and youth group director

Shoshanna Pro. We also spent time training for these leadership roles in Washington at an event planned by the NFTY Northwest board. NFTY, North American Federation of Temple Youth, is a collection of reform youth groups from around the country of which we are a part. PARTY participated in NFTY Northwest’s Fall Kallah, where we traveled up to Camp Solomon Schechter in Olympia, Washington. We participated in the talent show, made new friends, and caught up with old ones!

Then PARTY kicked off the year of our own programming, by celebrating Shabbat as a teen community and going to the haunted corn maze at Sauvie Island. It was rainy, but that didn’t slow us down! We were spooked at the maze! This year we have also accessed the DIY (do it yourself ) side of ourselves while learning about tikkun olam and recycling. We decorated our youth lounge with supplies from SCRAP.

We finished last semester with a great event, our Chewlatke (Chewbacca/latke) Shul-in. That’s right, we combined our love for Star Wars and Chanukah in a sleepover! We started the event by leading games ranging from pasta menorahs to Chanukah bingo for the kids at CBI’s Chanukah party. Afterwards, we spent the rest of the night and next morning connecting Star Wars to the Chanukah story. We watched entertaining skits, learned about the environment, ate Chinese food, and had an epic lightsaber battle. We ended the night by watching Star Wars (of course) and slept over in the education building.

This semester, we have traveled to Seattle, Washington for an amazing Social Action Winter NFTY event! We had a great time making a difference and meeting up with other Jewish teens our age. We also enjoyed meaningful services and awesome programs led by other teens from NFTY Northwest.

Back home, PARTY had an awesome Soup Sac Social Action Shabbaton where we created and gave lots of food out to people who are homeless. We have also spent time with Hillel learning about future college opportunities.

This month we’re getting ready to welcome our fabulous CBI eighth graders into PARTY and NFTY! We’re also looking forward to combining our forces with the teens at Muslim Educational Trust for a beach cleanup Havdallah. Later this year, we will be working with our friends up in Vancouver, Washington at the Kol Ami youth group to have a bi-temple shul-in!

Keep your ears open for more PARTY updates because we have so much more coming! I can’t wait for the rest of the year!

Social Action Very Thoughtful People

Throughout the year, CBI congregants donate generously to the Social Action Fund. We wanted you to know where your donations go. In 2015, the Social Action Committee disbursed funds to the following organizations, almost all of them in our very own community.

Camp Rosenbaum $ 1,000CODA, Inc. $ 1,000Community Warehouse $ 1,000Israel Religious Action Center $ 1,000Jewish Family & Child Services $ 1,000Lift Urban Portland $ 2,000Meals On Wheels $ 1,500New City Initiative $ 2,000New Israel Fund $ 1,000Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon $ 2,500Sunshine Pantry $ 1,000Urban Gleaners $ 1,500TOTAL: $16,500

We also used these donations to support our neighbors, the residents of NW Tower and Annex. Regular activities include meals, quarterly birthday parties, and a festive Thanksgiving Dinner.

Many of our efforts were focused on the kids in the NW Towers. For every child in the building, we purchased backpacks and school supplies, winter coats or boots, and holiday gifts. The three oldest children were provided with Chromebooks, which they needed for school work.

For MLK Day of Service, we provided funds for a Soup Sac.

Also, we have helped fund a Pop-Up Pantry, which provides fresh fruits, vegetables, and other food stuffs for low-income residents in the neighborhood. This program is run twice a month by Benjamin Olshin with the support of Lift Urban Portland.

Our largest and most well-attended event is Mitzvah Day, which in 2015 had 13 projects, ranging from cleaning the library and classrooms, to making meals for the Caring Community, to hosting a pancake breakfast at NW Towers. Please note that this year’s Mitzvah Day is Sunday, May 1, 2016.

We are so grateful for all the donations we receive for Social Action and for the hardworking committee members and volunteers who make all our activities possible.
