By: Coach Altland Senior Joseph Egri started the 2014 – 2015 Indoor season right where he left off from his Sectional Title in the Spring outdoor season. Last May, Joe cleared 13’ 0 “ to tie the school record in the pole vault and win the North 2 Group 3 Sectional Title. After a summer and fall of training for his jumping events, Joe opened the Indoor season with a record tying 13’0” jump at the Olympic Conference meet in the Toms River “Bubble” in mid- December to place second overall in the pole vault competition. Neither Joe or Coach Altland would know at the time, but this would be the only meet all season that Joe would not place first! In January, Joe teamed up with fellow senior Rey Jimenez to compete in the Greater Middlesex Conference relays for the pole vault competition in which the two vaulters add their heights together to record a total. Joe once again tied the record and Rey vaulted 8’ 6” for a total of 21’ 6” which won the duo the gold medal. The following week, they competed in the State Group 3 Relay Championships and although combined they jumped 22’6” for the silver medals, Joe was the top jumper as he cleared 13’6” to establish himself as the best pole vaulter in John F. Kennedy H.S. history! The Colts Neck Invitational was the next big meet on the schedule for the Mustangs and once again, 13’ 6” was accomplished for the gold medal. However, as Joe cleared the new record height, it was clearly evident that the record would not last very long as his attempts at 14 feet were very near misses. Not to be discouraged, Joe continued training knowing that the biggest meets of the season were yet to come. At the GMC individual championships, Joseph won the event early by clearing 13’ 0” and then decided to go straight to the record books by advancing the bar to 14 feet. His three attempts were unsuccessful, but he was still crowned County Champion in the pole vault. Two days later, the team returned to the “Bubble” for the North 2 Group3 Sectional championships and once again Joe’s 13’0” vault earned the title of Sectional Champion and automatically advanced him to the State Group 3 Championships. In addition to winning the pole vault title, Joe also won the high jump championship and helped the Mustangs finish 1 point away from a team title. Joe cleared 6’0” in the high jump for the victory as he won his fourth overall individual (continued on page 13) Senior Joe Egri Shatters Track Records John F. A Message from Our Principal

We are very proud of the fact that 52 percent of our student body made the Academic Honor Roll during the first semester of the school year. Congratulations to our honor roll students. John F. Kennedy Memorial High School had one senior recognized as a 2014 National Merit Scholarship Finalist and six Commended Students. In addition, we had 15 seniors score a perfect 800 on the verbal, math, or writing section of the SAT. Our students participated in the production of the Iselin Community for Education Carnival, held at Iselin Middle School, on February 28th. Our sophomore class held their Student-Faculty Dodgeball game on January 16, 2015. Our athletic teams have all performed well and are winding down their winter seasons. Special congratulations to Joe Egri for setting a school record in the pole vault at 14 feet 6 inches and overall N.J. State Champion in the pole vault. In addition, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our wrestlers for placing 4 team members into the NJSIAA State Championships. The production of our school play, “Godspell”, allowed our students to showcase their dramatic and musical talents on March 12th, 13th, and 14th. The cast and crew worked hard under Mrs. Jacobson’s direction and the play proved to be another Kennedy success story. Besides the aforementioned Service-Learning Projects, there are many more cross curricular Service-Learning Projects currently being undertaken in our high school. We are especially proud of the efforts our students have made to reach out to the students of Iselin Middle School and several elementary schools. Our students help raise over $3,000 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run/Walk. On Monday, March 23 through Friday May 1st, John F. Kennedy Memorial High School will administer the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) test. Students in grades 9, 10, 11 will participate in an English Language Arts (ELA) PARCC assessment, and students enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra II, and Geometry will complete a mathematics assessment. The ELA PARCC will be administered on 3 consecutive days, and the mathematic assessment on 2 consecutive days during this time period. This testing schedule applies to 2nd semester students only. We are looking forward to our continued success as we progress through this school year.

2015 Voice of Democracy

By: Bob Hugelmeyer

Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition. Annually, hundreds of John F. Kennedy Memorial High School students participate through the Social Studies Department. The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program (VOD) in 1947 to provide students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles. This year’s theme was, “Why Veterans Are Important to Our Nation’s History and Future.” We would like to congratulate our winners from VFW Iselin Post 2636. Our first place winner was Julia Sinatra, and our

runners up were Keval Gandhi and Zachary Jellison. Thank you for showing that at JFK, we are grateful for the service of our veterans, and understand their significance to our nation’s past, present, and future.

Mustangs Drive S.M.A.R.T. By: Mr. Matthew Koch Kennedy students are participating in the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey’s 5

th Annual

“U Got Brains Champion Schools Program”- a contest challenging New Jersey high school students and teachers to develop fun and interactive campaigns aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving. Since 2009, the Champion Schools Program has been committed to empowering students to take a positive approach in addressing the number one cause of death and disability among teens The message is simple: Keeping New Jersey’s roads safe is everyone’s responsibility. After being nominated as a Champion School and receiving the accompanying grant, the Mustangs sprang into action. Helmed by advisors Mrs. DiLonardo, Mr. Koch and Mrs. Tolley, Kennedy students

took to a variety of methods for getting the word out about the dangers of distracted driving. Traditional awareness-raising with flyers, magnets and bracelets joined a multi-media approach that included Twitter, Facebook and digital videos. “Mustangs SMART isn’t just a great way to get an important message out to the Kennedy community,” says senior Jess Fiore, “it’s a chance for students who are interested in such different things as business,

design, marketing, filmmaking to collaborate towards a common goal.” The top two campaigns, selected by a panel of expert judges, are awarded a grand prize-a driving simulator donated New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company. Kennedy looks

forward to the final competition, and bringing the prize home for spreading the word about distracted driving.

French Honor Society By: Keith Ridgeway–Advisor During the month of February, the French Honor Society participated in the Stand Up for Children campaign, sponsored by the Office of Senator Joseph F. Vitale and the Foster and Adoptive Family Services Donation. For this drive, we collected and filled backpacks for children in foster care. The children ranged from infants to teenagers. The backpacks were filled with toys, school supplies, and a letter for each child. Any organization interested in participating in this backpack campaign should contact the Office of Senator Vitale at 732-855-7441.

Kennedy Holds 2015 “Mr. JFK” Competition

By Mrs. Sharon DiLonardo & Mr. Chris Bergondo, Senior Class Co-Advisors

The tradition continues at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School… the “Mr. JFK” Competition. On Friday night, February 6, the 2015 “Mr. JFK” was crowned. This event is sponsored by the Senior Class of 2015 and raised over $2000 to be used to offset the cost of end-of-year senior class activities. The event began with 40 senior boys that were nominated by faculty advisors and sports coaches for recognition of their involvement in school activities. The senior class voted and a list of the Top 10 candidates was established to enter the competition. The 2015 “Mr. JFK” candidates were: Anthony Capurso, Peter Conde, Joe Egri, Ari King, Madhav Patel, Mikey Perez, Max Tahzib, Andrew Wallin, Bobby Williams, and Kieran Williams. During the week long competition students cast their votes for their favorite candidate in the following categories: “Best Hair”, “Nicest Smile”, “Most School Spirit” and a general vote for “Mr. JFK”. The highlight of the event was the very exciting and entertaining Friday evening competition. Performing before a packed auditorium and competing for votes from a faculty panel of judges the candidates put on

an outstanding display of style, talent and wit! The evening event categories consisted of “Formal Wear Modeling”, a “JFK High School Trivia” contest, a “Talent” segment and an “Open-ended Question Response”. The competition voting was close throughout the week, but at the end of the night after all the votes were tallied we were able to crown the 2015 “Mr. JFK”. Congratulations to Senior Madhav Patel – the winner of the “Mr. JFK” Competition! As the winner, Madhav is the recipient of a FREE Prom Bid! The 1

st runner-up

was Senior Anthony Capurso who won a FREE Prom Tuxedo Rental courtesy of DUCOFF’S TUXEDOS. The 2

nd runner-up was

Senior Ari King, who won a $50 gas Gift card. A special THANK YOU to Mr. Joe Carlucci of DUCOFF’S TUXEDOS on St. Georges Avenue in Avenel for donating the tuxedos for the

formal wear modeling and the 2nd

place prize. Kudos to our faculty panel of judges – Ms. Verrilli, Mrs. Rotella, Mr. Rotella and Mr. Seavy our official score tally expert…we could not have done this without you! CONGRATULATIONS to all of the “Mr. JFK” candidates! GREAT JOB! You guys were amazing! It was a pleasure working with you and THANK YOU for making this event such a great success.

Science National Honor Society

By: Jaya Banerjee Chatterjee—Advisor

Science National Honor Society or

SNHS is a prominent scientific organization that will engender a new group of young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America.

February has been a very busy month for the members and volunteers of SNHS at JFK. Members represented JFK Memorial High School for the first time ever in Regional Science Bowl 2015 at Princeton Plasma Research laboratory in Princeton on February 21

st and at the Regional Shore Bowl at

Rutgers on February 28th. Congratulations to

all those who participated-Meeki, Madhav, David, Krishna, Ankur, Zia, Nish Basheri, Hiral, Ritu, Rohan and Rujuta.

The competitions were tough and our students gave a good fight. They plan to perform even better next year with more team work, study sessions and support. One of our volunteers Saidya showed up at Rutgers to support the team!

Our next step is the Science Fair which is already been worked on. We hope to update you more on that in our next issue of the Newsletter.

We have been experiencing the effect of temperature, pressure and so many other factors that made water (H20) a real botheration throughout this winter. Let us hope for some colors in the lap of Mother nature as we approach Spring soon.

The National Honor Society has been

spending countless hours committing their time to making a difference in the community. Members of the honor society organized a blood drive in December 2014 with the help of the Central Jersey Blood Center. The blood drive raised a total of $490 which was donated to an organization called BELL- Building Educated Leaders for Life. In the month of January 2015, the National Honor Society sold hot chocolate to students in the school. The money raised from this event was donated to Elijah’s Promise soup kitchen. In February, members walked around during their lunches

collecting spare change from faculty and students; this money is intended to be donated to Happy Paws, an animal care facility. Although half the year has gone by, the

National Honor Society is still organizing events to host and/or participate in. In March, new members will be inducted into the Honor Society, and with their help, the honor society plans on organizing another blood drive to be held in April as well as raising money and participating in the annual MS Walk. The National Honor Society is committed to making a difference and it does so by volunteering it’s time to help better the community.

On February 25th, the JFK American Cancer Society Club held a fundraiser to “Walk All Over Cancer.” The turnout was better than we had hoped! After school, about 45 walkers showed up to walk the 2 miles (about 9½ laps) around the first floor of the building. Leading the pack was our resident fitness walker, Mrs. DiLonardo, who finished the walk ahead of everyone! Also in attendance were Ms. Ryan and Mrs. DePaolo. Prior to the start of the walk, Mrs. DePaolo shared the story of her struggles with skin cancer, leaving many reaching for the tissues. And Kennedy alum, Miss Colonia International 2015, Abbey O’Connor also lent a hand to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. As someone who has been affected by cancer in her own family, Miss O’Connor is using cancer as her platform as she competes for Miss New Jersey International next month. Not to be outdone, however, two more Kennedy alumni, Nick Mergel and Anthony (AJ) Williams, turned up with a donation from Nick’s fraternity at Rutgers. In total, we raised $426 that will go directly to the American Cancer Society. It is truly touching to see the Kennedy community come together for such an incredible cause. In the coming weeks, listen to the

announcements for our next fundraiser. In the

spring we will hold a bake sale, as well as a

charity softball game against Colonia. Most

importantly, we will be walking at the

Woodbridge Relay for Life on June 6th. Please

join our team and support the American Cancer

Society. See Mrs. Lesniak’s SchoolWires page

for details on how to join the team. We look

forward to seeing more of you show your support

for the American Cancer Society.

Paheli Patel Named Finalist in National Merit Scholarship Program

By: Mrs. Alison Kirk

In February, approximately 15,000 National Merit Semi Finalists are notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist. John F. Kennedy is proud to announce senior Paheli Patel as the recipient of this great honor! All winners of Merit Scholarship

®

awards are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments: The National Merit Scholarship Committee will evaluate the following requirements: the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay. It is no surprise Paheli has come so far in this elite competition. Paheli’s stellar transcript reflects success in the most challenging courses available at our high school. Her resume includes a 4.1 GPA and an array of

leadership activities in academics, athletics, and the arts. Paheli is an AP Scholar with Honor, President of Spanish Honors Society, a member of Science National Honors Society, Student Council, and Math Team. She performs with our Concert Choir and Show Choir and has participated in Girls Cross Country and Winter Track. Next year, Paheli plans to major in biomedical engineering, with a concentration in Genetics. We joyfully congratulate Paheli Patel on being named a Finalist in the NMSP by demonstrating extraordinary academic accomplishments and displaying great potential for collegiate success!

The Girls Varsity Soccer Team ended the 2014 season with an overall record of 4-16-0. This season was met with several challenges including injuries and players learning to play completely new positions. However, the girls met those challenges head on. After losing to Mother Seton 5-0 in their first matchup, the girls fought back in their second meeting and won 2-1! The girls also were able to hold Metuchen, the #1 ranked team in the Blue Division, to a 0-0 in regulation play and force the game into Overtime. Senior Captain Tatiana Margiottiello was the lead goal scorer for the team with 3 goals, and was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for her ongoing commitment to the integrity of the game as well as her character and composure on and off the field. Senior Captain Sandra Sosa made a big impact on the field as the defensive leader of the team. There were numerous occasions where Sandy prevented shots on goal and created goal scoring opportunities by making strategic passes to her teammates. Sandy was awarded the Mustang Award for her dedication and commitment to the improvement of the team. Junior Clare Lewis

stepped up in a big way as the team’s starting goalkeeper. Being in goal is not Clare’s first position, but her past experience and athletic nature made her the best candidate. She ended up earning 190 saves for the season and she was named to the All Blue Division Team for the Greater Middlesex Conference as well as earning the Most Valuable Player Award for the season. Coach McCaig would like to thank all of her Senior players for their hard work, sacrifices on and off the field for the team, and for reminding her what it means to be a part of a team. Thank you Sosa!, Tot, Ashley McGinn, Sof-Sof, Kat, Lex, and Aksa. The team also earned the GMC Blue Division Sportsmanship Award. Coach Keaveny did a fantastic job working with our JV team this year. The team ended their season 4-5-0. It was particularly great to see the team earn back to back wins against Carteret. Sophomore Hemali S Patel earned the title as the team’s leading goal scorer and even earned a hat-trick, 3 goals scored in the same game, versus Carteret! I am so proud and inspired by the hard work and dedication of this year’s team.

(continued from page one) sectional championship over the past two seasons. At the State Group 3 championships, Joe once again brought out his competitive spirit when faced with opponents who had jumped higher than him and was the only vaulter to clear 13’6” that afternoon to be named Group 3 Champion. Joe also cleared 6’2” in the high jump to tie for third place overall in group 3. By winning medals in both events, Joe qualified for the final meet of the season in high school track – The Meet of Champions! The Meet of Champions was held Feb. 22 at the TR Bubble and Joe entered the meet as the third seed by virtue of his previous performances. As the vaulters were being eliminated, Joe was just warming

up. He entered the competition at 12’ 6” and cleared on his 1st attempt and successfully cleared 13’0 and 13’6”. Now faced with 14’0” once again, Joe calmly attempted a new school record and was successful. With three competitors left, Joe was the first to attempt 14’6” – another school record- and cleared on

his first attempt! By virtue of this jump – Joe Egri became the first Meet of Champions winner in more than 20 years and just the fifth ever for the Mustangs. On Monday, Mar. 9th he was also named First Team All State. Joe

plans to major in criminal justice next year and is in the process of choosing a college and track team for the future. His immediate goal however is to repeat as an outdoor county and state champion and raise the bar even higher!

After a ’13-’14 school year marred by running over potholes and cracks in the “Parking Lot Track,” the girls winter track team was finally able to christen the new JFK Track & Field facility this year. Fueled by better training opportunities in the early part of the season, the girls won each of their two dual meets over Edison and Colonia. The team was led by Winter Track veterans Arianna Ventura, Ashley McGinn, Emily Shibata, Akhila Sankaramanchi, Ivy Chan, and Heleen Mendez. Providing an extra boost to the roster were several newcomers, including freshmen Stuti Vyas, Harvinder Kaur, and Jackie Kelly, juniors

Clare Lewis, Asley Wilson, and Kelly Edgeworth, and senior spring track veteran Rose Ogrodnik. As usual, the team competed in their major events at the Toms River Bubble. Over the

course of these meets, the team was able to set six new program records (both relay and individual). The highlight of the season came at State Sectionals, where Rose Ogrodnik finished 2

nd in the 55m dash and 4

th in

the 400m, and Clare Lewis medaled in 6

th place in the shot put. Both girls

earned the right to compete at the Group 3 State Championships. At that meet, Clare set a personal best by nearly 2ft. Coach Seavy is proud of the progress the team showed over the course of the season and is looking forward to more medals in the future.

“New Track, New Outlook”

2013—2014 Competition Cheerleading

By Coach Jessica Kondrk

The 2014-2015 Competition cheerleading season has now come to a close. The girls worked hard all season long for this competition and had a good showing at their National competition in Ocean City, Maryland this February. They performed fantastic and received third place out of nine very competitive teams. It was a great end to the season especially for our three seniors. Those seniors are Sayantika Sarkar, Samantha Staggard, and Marissa Vergara. These girls have had a great career here at JFK High School. They are all talented and bright young ladies that are also involved in other activities besides cheerleading including National Honor Society and Heroes and Cool Kids. They have a

great future ahead of them after they graduate. Mrs. Rotella and myself wish nothing but the best for them. We want to thank them for all their hard work and dedication to this team.

At the winter sports awards presentation we chose four of our cheerleaders to receive awards and

recognition for their efforts this season. These included most valuable player, most improved, sportsmanship, and the mustang award. A congratulations go out to Samantha Staggard, Skylar Keller, Marissa Murray, and Morgan

Lyons for being chosen by Mrs. Rotella and myself to receive these awards. The awards were given to these four ladies do to their commitment and hard work throughout the season.

The 2014-2015 season was very enjoyable for our young teams. Both our boys and girls teams had line-ups that were almost entirely revamped from the previous season. The veteran and new members of the team progressed nicely throughout the season.

This marked Coach Palombo’s final season as the Mustang Bowling Coach and he wishes the program continued success in the seasons ahead. He also would like to thank all of the Administrators, Athletic Directors, Parents, and Student-Athletes for the past 27 years who made his experience as a scholastic varsity bowling coach very gratifying and pleasurable.

By: Coach Brad Altland This past Winter season, the Mustang’s boy’s track team battled Mother Nature once again. In the beginning, the Mustangs were victorious as they sported a brand new state-of-the-art all-weather rubber track. Many challenging workouts and skill sessions produced very positive results as the athletes did not mind the cold temperatures and continued to meet Coach Altland’s expectations with their efforts. As the veterans improved and passed along a great work ethic to the newcomers, things began to take shape for a very successful season. The Mustangs hosted the Edison Eagles for the first ever dual meet on the new track. As the JFK squad emerged with an easy victory, the team noticed that the intensity of the workouts was paying off and were ready to step up their efforts to continue with the process. The first major indoor meet was held at the Toms River “Bubble” and the Mustangs competed against some of the best teams in southern New Jersey at the Olympic Conference Relay Meet. Although not a member of this conference, the JFK team placed first overall in the team scoring with some outstanding relay performances as six of the nine relay teams placed third or higher among the 23 teams at the meet. As a team, the Mustangs would go on to place second at the GMC Blue Division relays, third at the State Group 3 relays and third at the GMC Blue Division championships. Kennedy would place fourth overall at the Greater Middlesex Conference Relays and fifth at the GMC Championships. Their sixth place finish at the State Group 3 Championships was their lowest finish, despite the competition including all 67 Group 3 schools in the entire state. The Mustangs missed out on winning their first ever sectional championship (indoors or outdoors) when they finished second by one point in February! Individually, the JFK squad made their mark during the championship season as Senior Joseph Egri set a new school record of 14’ 6” in the pole vault en route to winning a state championship at the Meet of Champions. Joe also was the GMC champion in the pole vault and tied for second in the high jump. At the State Sectional Championships, Joe won the pole vault and the high jump and was joined on the medal stand by senior Max Tahzib who placed second in the shot put. Senior Matthew Sylvester placed third in the 55 high hurdles and 6th in the 55 meter dash. Teammate Justin Shears (sr.) placed fourth in the 55 high hurdles

and junior Junaid Mughal also placed fourth in the 400 meter dash. At the State Group 3 Championships, Joe Egri once again won the pole vault and tied for third in the high jump. Justin Shears placed sixth in the hurdles as both he and Joe went on to the Meet of Champions. In relay competition, the mustangs were recipients of numerous medals as the quartet of Ari King (sr.), Matt Sylvester, Justin Shears and Junaid Mughal comprised the 4 X 200 meter relay team. Junior Anthony Del Popolo replaced Justin on the 4 X 400 meter team which was also victorious in the GMC and State championships. The shuttle hurdle team also collected medals twice as Justin Shears, Matt Sylvester, Anthony Del Popolo and Rey Jimenez (sr.) combined for some blazing performances. The mustangs showed their balance as the distance runners combined for medals in the 4 by 800 meter relay led by senior Savan Patel, and juniors Thambu Jisnnu, Rahual Mahju and Nathaniel Brown. Seniors Jeron Borrero, Andrew Wallin and Robert Williams added depth and strong performances to the team during the season. They were joined by Juniors Wyatt Emme, Mehul Patel, Brandon Redd, Devlin Sayles, Syed Azeem, Dante Davis, Connor Freeman, Matthew Funk, Dan Lodato, Danish Mansoori, Victor Milton, Hussnain Mohammed, and Patrick Pocztarski. Teammates Thambu Bavisnnu and Shivindra Gour joined fellow sophomores Harvey Aberin, Sameer Ahmad, Anthony Collymore, Jayson Infante, Mohmoadsani Manjara, Shahil Patel, Umang Patel and Shanake Samaranayake. Although participating for the first time, the following freshmen showed a great deal of talent and will contribute to the tradition in the future: Prakher Chandra, Dakota Motta, Pritish Nayak, Banty Patel, Raj Patel, Vrushik Patel, Brendan Schwear, Baljot Singh, Nikhil Thapa and Samory Wilson. Following the season, Senior Joseph Egri was named to the GMC All-Conference team for the second year in a row, in addition to being named to the All-Blue Division Team. Joining him on the All-Blue Division Team were Justin Shears, Savan Patel, and Junaid Mughal. At the Winter Sports Awards ceremony, Joe Egri was named MVP, Senior Matthew Sylvester received the Sportsmanship Award, Senior Maxwell Tahzib received the Mustang Award and Junior Anthony Del Popolo received the Most Improved Award.
