CYC Board HighlightsAt the Board of Directors meeting Feb. 18, 2015, the

following actions were taken:l Greg Garner was welcomed as the new CYC board treasurerl New membership applications were approvedl Participants in the summer’s racing program are now per-mitted to use the club’s restaurant facilities on race days.

The next meeting will be held on March 19.

Hello to everyone; we are in the third month of 2015 and we are soaring to new heights all over and around our club. The Chili Cook-Off and the “Chowdah” Challenge were both very successful. The Rat Pack Party, with entertainment by Eddie Michael and Dina Martin Shows, was lots of fun. Anita Cafferty brought us a Dixie Land Jazz band that took us on a journey as we celebrated Fat Tuesday. The Cruisers have been busy with several trips. The Bow Chasers are busy as well as the Gulls.

Yachting has held or managed several regattas with the latest the Laser Midwinters East. Judges, sailors, and parents all praised our team. The members of CYC that participated did an outstanding job, from PRO David Bill-ing and event organizer Dick Boblenz, to each volunteer on the water or landside. We had 177 participants from 16 countries, including 152 from the U.S. and Canada.

The weather is warming up and so is the Tiki Bar and pool area. As we enjoy the beautiful areas around the club get ready for more Rock the Dock parties and cook-outs. You can even get dressed up for the Commodores Ball, coming up March 21st.

Our membership continues to grow; membership usage of the club continues to grow; the fun continues to grow…are you part of the growth? Don’t get left out…hurry to CYC for FUN.

Have a great month.

all is well on the docks. It’s time to come on down to where the fun is; March is a great month to enjoy a little kick-back time by the Tiki Bar.

Spic and Span Sea StrainerTo maintain the proper raw-water intake onboard, you

certainly need to remove your sea strainer baskets and clean them fairly often, particularly if you keep your boat in com-paratively warm, saline (or at least brackish) water.

While basket cleaning is a solid thing to do from the stand-point of maintenance, there’s another chore that sometimes needs doing: muck removal. Depending on what sort of water is routinely entering your boat, a mixture of dirt, grass and other materials can form a layer of muck at the bottom of each of your strainers that can reduce water flow, espe-cially when one of those strainers happens to be plumbed into an air-conditioning system that runs continuously or near continuously.

What should you do if you discover a slug of muck at the bottom of one or all of your strainers? Remove the cover of each and every affected strainer as well as the basket inside and, once you’ve cleaned both of these, aim a standard water hose (with the flow nozzled down to a workable level) into the bottom of the strainer, slowly increasing the flow rate to a point where it is breaking the muck loose and washing it up and out of the strainer.

A certain level of abandon is required for the process to work, by the way. Realize, when you start, that things are going to get wet in your engine room and your bilges are going to need cleaning after you’ve finished cleaning your strainers.

And one more point. You might try tossing a copper pot scrub-ber into your strainer basket before you tighten the cover. (You can pick up a box of Spic & Span’s Chore Boy copper scouring pads at most grocery stores.) Marine organisms tend to abhor copper, of course. Old salts used to advise putting pennies into sea strainers for the same reason but the ploy is not as useful as it used to be since many pennies these days are made primarily of zinc, with only a thin copper coating.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

FCYCBy Peggy Powell, FCYC Director

tHe next Meeting of FCYC will be held at the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda, March 13-15. This meeting is the annual FCYC Change of Watch, which will take place on Saturday night. The gala event will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m. and a sumptuous din-ner to follow. The ceremony to welcome the Flag Officers is a beau-tiful one with the ringing of the bell to indicate the new officers.

As always, the Directors meeting will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. Guest speaker will be Capt. Ralph Allen. Mr. Allen gradu-ated from the Florida Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Ocean Engineering. He has been an outdoors writer for the Charlotte Sun Herald newspaper for the past 30 years, and since 2003 he’s been the Southwest Florida regional editor for Florida Sportsman maga-zine. Capt. Allen will be presenting the history of boating in the Charlotte Harbor area. He begins with the Calusa Indians, Ponce de Leon, and Hernando de Soto, then describes the early years of Punta Gorda up to the present.

The Tampa Yacht and Country Club has announced the closing of its marina from Feb. 8, 2015 through mid-January 2016 for a complete renovation of its marina basin. All other facilities will remain open.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced a proposed reduction in operating hours of lockages based on water levels. Please check the Army Corps of Engineers website to review hours and water levels.

Yachting

FeBruarY was a busy month for Yachting. We started the month with the 49ers and the Nacra 17 North American Championship regatta hosted at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. We coordinated race committee and equipment for this regatta.

The third week of the month we again hosted the Laser Midwinters East regatta, a fabulous event with nearly 180 sailors from 16 countries competing.

I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time and those who also volunteered their boats for helping out with these regattas.

We have a few regattas coming up this month, as well. The Clearwater Challenge will be held Saturday March 14. This regatta was postponed from 2014 due to severe weather back on Nov. 1.

The Snipe Midwinter Series regatta starts the next

The Book Club meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Board Room.

All members and their guests are welcome to join. After our book discussion, many of us stay for dinner. We’d love for you to join us. Please call Virginia at 447-6000 for reservations. You do not have to read the book to join and listen. Our discussions are stimulating and fun. If you enjoy reading, this is the place to be!

All books are predetermined by the members prior to discussion. Our upcoming meetings will feature the following selections:

day, running Sunday, Monday and Tuesday March 15 – 17. The regatta banquet will be Tuesday evening, which also coincides with St. Patrick’s Day.

Saturday and Sunday March 28 and 29 will bring us to the end of our racing season with the Clark Mills regatta for Optimist Dinghies, Windmills and 420s.

As always, we need race committee volunteers for these events. Please contact me, or Dave Yoder to sign up for one or all of these regattas.

PC Tish Wold and Dick Crowl have organized a Beer Can racing series for this summer season starting Sunday, March 8 and the next one scheduled for Sunday, March 22. This is a casual racing series intended primarily to get us out sailing our boats. It will consist of a windward/leeward course about 1½ to 2 miles long starting off of the outer mark of Clearwater Pass. After the race everyone is invited back to the Tiki Bar for fun and storytelling. This is for all sailors in the area, including non-CYC members. Start time is 1430 (2:30PM) at the outer mark.

Tim Walsh has agreed to be the new Yachting Commit-tee chair. Tim is a fine sailor and avid regatta volunteer who has been teaching a course in celestial navigation here at the club. He keeps his Catalina 38 My Girl at CYC’s B dock. Be sure to stop by and say hello – or better yet, come to the next Yachting Committee meeting.

winter/sPring sailing programs resumed February 7 th with 21 children enrolled in the Saturday “continue to sail” morning program and all day Opti Team. We currently have seven adults enrolled in the afternoon adult learn-to-sail program.

All three summer camp sessions are now full with a small waiting list.

The after school program resumed in February at Calvary Episcopal Church, Indian Rocks Beach, and both the Tuesday and Thursday classes are full.

Discussions are underway to explore the possibility of establishing a Sea Scout program for some of our older children. This has good potential on many levels and I will keep the Board informed as we learn more.

wHat is beer can racing? No, it’s not how fast a sailboat crew can drink cans of beer! In technical terms, it’s an informal windward-leeward race. In March a number of sailors will begin beer can racing. We will race on weekend days to begin with, starting near the spider buoy and proceeding upwind to round a mark, and back. Our initial plan is to do two or three laps, but we might adjust this after the first couple of races.

This kind of racing is very informal. No race committee. No PHRF ratings are required, but we will handicap the boats using basic PHRF data. We will race, then return to the Tiki Bar at CYC to discuss, debate, relive the race, tell sea stories, and perhaps enjoy a Dark and Stormy. We will use GPS satellite for our start time (so no sequence), and the last boat to round the mark the last time has to stop and pick it up and bring it back to CYC!

Do you own a sailboat? Would you like to participate? Do you have friends that might like to participate? Invite them to join us! What a great way to introduce Clearwater Yacht Club to more boaters! If you would like to learn more, please contact me at [email protected] or 727-641-8634 to be included in the emails.

the House and Grounds Committee met last month and discussed several repairs and remodeling projects, some new and some ongoing from last year. Our club house is quaint, cozy, comfortable and not getting any younger. There are always things to fix or redo or add to.

We approved repairs needed to the railroad tie retaining wall on the southeast end of the parking lot. We considered various types of retaining wall material and settled on stone blocks. With the help of volunteer members and some of our staff the project was completed on February 23. The project took lots of plan-ning and hard work. Rear Commodore Ed Proefke got us the material at wholesale. The wall construction was done by PC Tim Roberts, GM Tom Brusini, Dan Geis, Bob Freiberg, Jack France, Ian Bieszad, Christian Worms and Austin Taylor (yes, our wonderful bartender and head server). Awesome job, gentlemen! Thank you for your time and energy.

Another project approved last month is now completed – the installation of our new glass washer and stainless steel sink behind the main bar. No more loud roar of the manual glass washer drowning out the conversations of patrons at the bar. The new auto glass washer quietly and expertly cleans and sanitizes 24 glasses in 120 seconds. Faster than a Corvette! No more running out of glasses at large parties! And no more leaky bar sink that Dan has repaired time and time again, until it couldn’t be repaired any longer. Danielle says Hip Hip

Hooray! This was all made possible by a member donor who volunteered to pay a large part of the cost. Thank you!!

Good news just keeps on coming. Our GM Tom Brusini successfully negotiated with Leaders Furniture to replace, at no charge to the club, our Dry Dock deck and pool chairs that were falling apart and years out of warranty. Great job, Tom!

Two projects coming soon are: replacing or repairing the stained glass burgee window in

the entry hall that is falling apart from old age and the sunbuilding new pram racks. I know Father Bob and the

sailors can’t wait for the new racks.Chef John and his team have created a new menu coming

March 11th. We have kept the favorites and added LOTS of new appetizers, sandwiches and entrees. You will be amazed at how many new, delicious items there are, and I am sure you will love them all. Danielle is also working on some new wines to go with the Chef’s new creations. Give them a try!

One of Chef John’s challenges is to prepare for a night with 65 reservations on the books and 130 show up. Yes, that happens. PLEASE try to make reservations so everyone knows how to plan for excellent service. Check out the new comment card. Fill it out and let us know how you like the new menu.

I will close by telling you a surprise is coming soon to the Dry Dock that will make enjoying sports and entertainment more fun for more members. If you know what this is, don’t tell. Let it be a surprise.

I hope to see you all around the club!

Do you know who donated this beautiful stained glass burgee to CYC many years ago? Or when it was donated? If you have any clues to its provenance, please contact GM Tom Brusini at 727 447 6000.

Bow CHasers love to sail each Tuesday morning. Although the Love of Sailing Inter-Club regatta, scheduled for February 10, was postponed due to weather, our sailors were undaunted. Education chairman Sandie Ramsden turned the morning into a training session demonstrating racing strategies. Afterward, the club served a delicious lunch and sailors played Valentine Bingo. Utilizing sailing knots and line, assistant race captain Lucille Encke Gray, who organized the sailing event and luncheon, created colorful bracelets with sailing knots for prizes.

Several sailors have teamed up with Father Bob, tak-ing his Saturday afternoon adult classes at CYC. In addi-tion, class three sailing instructor Ned Covel, a member of Father Bob’s leadership team, began a series of racing clinics for Bow Chaser sailors in preparation for the April Rainbow Regatta and other inter-club racing.

Many thanks to all Bow Chasers who volunteered for the February regattas.

Landside, Mary Kay Delk hosted the annual Soup Cruise February 19. On one of the coldest nights of the winter, approximately 25 ladies stayed warm and cozy with great food and friendship while sampling sumptuous soups, ap-petizers, crusty breads, and, of course, a little vino.

The Brown Boxer, a newcomer to the CYC South Beach neighborhood, is serving up not only food and drinks, but also entertainment, including karaoke Monday nights. February 23 a group of BC gals gathered for dinner and sing-a-long. Who knew we had such talent!

*A special welcome to our newest Bow Chaser, Debbi Brown!

Multihull racers show their speedtHe 49-er, 49er FX, Nacra 17 North American Championships brought 65 boats and 130 sailors to Clearwater in February, and the sight of these speed demons and their ability to accelerate from a near stand-still was nothing short of ah-mazing.

Ask Al Humphers and Terry Taylor, acting as pin boat, what happened when a 49er ran into them. When the PRO radioed the pair to ask the sail number of the offending boat, they re-plied, “We don’t know; it’s still on top of us, upside down.”

Nobody was hurt; the race went on, and the racers will be back next year.

Our group would like to have periodic evening functions for those who work during the day, and we expected to start with a March 2015 Saturday night with a “Guys and Dolls Fashion Show.” Unfortunately, planning didn’t get under-way early enough this year to have the event, but we intend to hold it in March 2016 if we can coordinate the models and the clothing shops. Meanwhile, if you have any ideas on what we can do for some evening functions, please let me or Terri Freiberg know.

Annual dues for the Gulls were raised from $10 to $15, effective January 1, 2015, which is the beginning of our fiscal year. Dues notices have been distributed and dues are being collected. At present half of our members have paid their 2015 dues. All funds received by the Gulls are used to provide the monthly ladies luncheon programs, and to help CYC with gifts that benefit the club. We’ve donated the piano, the sound system, computers, and much more, and are working to determine how our gift to the club will be directed for the year. We welcome ideas from the members on how we can benefit the club!

We are always looking for new ideas for programs – either luncheons or evenings – so please give some thought to the kinds of things you would enjoy, and let me or Terri Freiberg ([email protected]) know!

Hope to see everyone soon, but if I don’t get a chance in the next week or two – STAY WARM!

Joyce Jenkyn and Lynne Shackelford were the make-over models during the Gulls’ January luncheon.

General Manager’s LetterBy tom Brusini, general Manager

sPring is Just around the corner - thanks for a super month in February! Along with plenty of usage in the dining rooms and Tiki hut, and nu-merous private parties, we had nearly 100 Laser sailors here for a pasta dinner after one of their races…and can those fine young men and women eat some lasagna and meatballs!

When’s the last time you were

here? Last week? Last month? Longer than that? Well, if you’ve not dined here very much lately, you’d be wise to get in here and try some of Chef John’s delicious cuisine! Between his creations and his staff’s execution, they’re serving some really great meals, and something for everyone. Early in March he’ll present his spring

menu, with lots of new items…and we’ll always keep our in-house aged Prime Rib for Friday nights! Time to head to Clearwater Yacht Club!

And the wait staff and bar staff? Danielle has been conducting training classes on a regular basis to improve our service to you. When you see the new crew members, please welcome them to your club!

Get ready to ramp up the fun as well

– here comes St. Patrick’s Day, Snipe Midwinters regatta, Dockside parties, and Birthday & Anniversary Night for January, February & March. Check our calendar so you don’t miss out on the fun!

Reserve Saturday, March 21st for the COMMODORES BALL.

This evening is one of the finest of

the year! Join us downstairs as we welcome the new Bridge Officers and enjoy libations and delicious appetiz-ers. Then we’ll head upstairs for an evening of dining and dancing! Once seated, we’ll recognize and thank all the past commodores in attendance then proceed with a fantastic dinner. It’s not too early to get out your tux, your nicest evening dress, your club uniform, and make sure they still fit! “4 Check out page 16 of this month’s Compass for more details, and call Virginia today to reserve your table.”

We have lots of new members in

the clubhouse – thanks to those of you who referred a friend to the club – that’s how we grow! Please intro-duce yourself if you see a pineapple flag on a table. It’s the symbol of wel-come, so let’s welcome these new members to our CYC family!
