MasterWorks IV: "Youthful Musical Stories" March 14 The winner of our annual Howe Young Artist Competition will be featured as soloist on this traditional family concert. Over the years we are proud to have afforded many talented high school musicians the valuable experience of perform-ing as soloist with a full symphony orchestra to the delight of our audiences. As a special treat this year the famous Eulenspiegel Puppets Theatre Company will partner with the symphony to present the timeless children’s classic “Peter and the Wolf,” introducing four foot tall puppets fashioned especially for this performance. This is an event that will be sure to delight youngsters as well as the young of heart. Held at Central Auditorium, 9th & Cedar at 7:30 pm. For more information visit : muscatine symphony.org.

"Someone's Family" Photographs by Pamela Houser March 8 - May 24

Artist Pamela Houser has traveled the United States and finds people ex-periencing homelessness wherever she goes. These individuals are cold, lone-ly and hungry. They are “Someone’s Family”, a brother, sister, parent, child and they need help. Houser’s hope is that her work will help the viewer fins a deeper sense of consciousness and empathy concerning the homeless. She

depicts their lives through the use of black and white photog-raphy. Candid or photojournalist photos catch them in their struggle trying to find the most basic necessities. Consistent throughout the work is their obvious lack of food and housing.

Visitors to the exhibition, “Someone’s Family”, are encour-aged to drop off canned goods which will be donated to local food pantries. Photographs by Houser may be purchased with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Muscatine Center for

Social Action. Opening of the exhibition will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Muscatine Art Center located at 1314 Mulberry. Admission is free.

Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins with Ben Bedford March 7

Sean Watkins co-founded Nickel Creek when he was just 12 years old, kickstarting a career that’s taken him from the stage of the Grammy Awards to the top of the bluegrass charts. Along the way, he’s become an award-winning guitarist, a singer/songwriter and a member of several different bands, not to mention one of the early pioneers of a genre now known across the world as Americana. Opener Ben Bedford delivers intriguing sketches of America, its individuals, their victories and their struggles. Poignant, but never sentimental, Bedford’s portrait-like songs capture the vitality of his characters and draw the listener deep into the narratives.

On St. Patrick's Day it is customary to wear shamrocks and/or green clothing or accessories (the "wearing of the green"). St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the

Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. This story first appears in writing in 1726, though it may be older. In pagan Ireland, three was a significant number and the Irish had many triple deities, a fact that aided St Patrick in his evangelisation efforts. The wearing of the 'St Patrick's Day Cross', especially in the World War I era, by the Irish, was also a popular custom. These St Patrick's Day Crosses have a Celtic Christian cross made of paper that is "covered with silk or ribbon of different colours, and a bunch or rosette of green silk in the centre."

The colour green has been associated with Ireland

since at least the 1640s, when the green harp flag was used by the Irish Catholic Confederation. Green ribbons and shamrocks have been worn on St Patrick's Day since at least the 1680s. Green was adopted as the colour of the Friendly Brothers of St Patrick, an Irish fraternity founded in about 1750. However, when the Order of St. Patrick—an Anglo-Irish chivalric order—was founded in 1783 it adopted blue as its colour. This led to blue being associated with St Patrick. In the 1790s, green became associated with Irish nationalism when it was used by the United Irishmen. This was a republican organisation—led mostly by Protestants but with many Catholic mem-bers—who launched a rebellion in 1798 against British rule. The phrase "wearing of the green" comes from a song of the same name, which laments United Irishmen supporters being persecuted for wearing green. Through-out the 19th and 20th centuries, the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick's Day grew.

Day of the Child March 29

The Day of the Child is an annual event that brings children and their parents together for fun activities and to learn of resources in the com-munity that are available.

The event is sponsored by Com-munity Action of Southeast Iowa and is held at Westland Mall in West Burlington, Iowa. The 27th Day of the Child will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from Noon-4 p.m.

The theme this year is “Exploring the World of Science”. Approximately 24 nonprofit organizations set up booths

at the event. Organizations provide free information and resources for both children and parents in the form of arts, games, crafts and activities.

Day of the Child is the idea of event organizer Tamee DeCoursey and Early Child Care Program Director, Cheryl Flaatten. This one day event brings around 700 parents and children per year to the mall to partake in the festivities that last for four hours.

Families learn the importance of proper nutrition, exercise,

education, child development, social activities and are made aware of the services and activities in the community that are available to them. The event has ideas and information on many things parents can do with their children at home. Parents and children show a lot of interest and excitement in the day of the event and continue to come to this worthwhile event every year. Many parents now bringing their children to this event attended when they were children themselves!

To learn more about Day of the Child please call 319-753-0193 and ask for Tamee DeCoursey.

The Iowa State penitentiary was established In Fort Madi-son, Iowa in 1839, one year after Iowa became a territory, and seven years before it became a state in 1846. The prison was patterned after the penitentiary in Auburn, New York. It is the oldest prison west of the Mississippi River and, if all goes well this year, it will be replaced by the new prison north of Fort Madison.

The 1860 Code of Iowa did not provide for parole or other types of early release for good behavior that are used today. If you did the crime, you did the time – all of it – unless you received a pardon from the governor. Not only did the pardon get you freed from prison, but it also legally forgave you for your criminal act.

A study of pardons conducted in 2012 found that between 1856 and 1866 there were 610 admissions to Iowa State Peni-tentiary. Of those inmates, 140 (23%) were released by pardon. Expiration of sentence was the release status of the rest (with the exception of a handful of escapes and deaths).

61% of the pardons were for crimes against property – such as theft and fraud. 34% of the pardons were for crimes against persons – violent crimes. The other 5% were for crimes such as Civil War desertion (there were reports in Keokuk news-papers of women being sent to the penitentiary for wearing men’s cloths).

As difficult as it might be to believe, 18 of 24 murder cases (75%) were pardoned. Even harder to believe, 10 of 10 rape cases (100%) were pardoned. The correctional philosophy at the time held that there were two types of criminals. Some convicts were basically good people who were led astray. “I would not have shot him had I not been drunk.” I should not have raped her, but she was asking for it.” Today we call that criminal thinking.

The other type of criminals came from bad seed. They inherited their criminal traits and, as such, would be criminals for life. The former were often pardoned. The latter did their time until they paid their debt to society in full or died and answered to their maker.
