In its first meeting after last month’s Church Confer-ence, the campaign steering team chose a meaningful theme for the effort to raise $2.5 million. The team unani-mously and enthusiastically chose We’re Here for Life. The team agreed on the theme as it:

— Builds on the 2009-2012 campaign theme, We’re Here for Good.

— Emphasizes the community dimension (“We”).

— Declares a focal point (“Here”).

— Celebrates the “Life” dimensions of the campaign:

The lives of children, youth, adults, and guests who are welcomed and served in the Plaza Build-ing six to seven days a week.

The lives of our local neighbors who will be fed, educated, and enriched through the Metro Care-Ring Hunger Relief Center.

The lives of global neighbors – primarily children and women – who will be saved through the Imagine No Malaria effort.

Here is a projected calendar of the We’re Here for Life campaign:

Capital Campaign Theme and Schedule Announced

Immediately following the congregation’s approval on Feb. 16 of a proposal to raise funds for the Plaza Building mission station renovation and two major offsite missions, a team of committed leaders met for the first time to organize and begin preparing for the campaign to begin in April.

The team will work with Generis consultant Gerald Farley to plan, prepare, and provide leadership for the campaign. Gerald worked with Trinity in two other highly successful “three-year, over-and-above” giving campaigns in the past dozen years. To meet Gerald and learn more about his firm and generosity focus, visit generis.com.

The following church and staff members have stepped up to offer their time, skill, and experience to lead the campaign to fund the Plaza Building Initiative and Mission Tithe this spring:

Lent is the perfect time to reflect on our relationship with God. It is a dedicated part of the year designed to help us step back and focus on our spiritual life. Most people associate Lent with prayer and fasting. However, in our quick-paced world, that can be easier said than done. It’s often challenging to take the time needed for prayer and reflection.

Regardless of how much or little time you have this Lent, Trinity has several offerings to help you enhance and deepen your spiritual journey. Forty-eight different members contributed to our Lenten Devotional Book.

Trinity will have Lenten small groups, Contemplative Spirituality, special choir and organ offerings from our children and adults, as well as Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. Careful planning has been put into each of these offerings, and they are sure to enrich this special time.

In closing, I thought I would share a reflection from pastor and author William A. Ward. May this reflection help bring the power of the positive into your Lenten journey, and may we all become better followers of our most beloved God.

Feast vs. Fast This Lent: • Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling in them. • Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of life. • Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light. • Fast from thoughts of illness; feast on the healing power of God. • Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify. • Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude. • Fast from anger; feast on patience. • Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism. • Fast from worry; feast on divine order. • Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation. • Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives. • Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer. • Fast from hostility; feast on non-resistance. • Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. • Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. • Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal truth. • Fast from discouragements; feast on hope. • Fast from facts that depress; feast on verities that uplift. • Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm. • Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire. • Fast from shadows of sorrow; feast on the sunlight of serenity. • Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence. • Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that undergirds.

— William Arthur Ward (American author, teacher and pastor, 1921-1994)

This Trinity Devotional Book was written and produced entirely by our Trinity church family and includes truly amazing and thought-provoking reflections on the topic of HOLY QUESTIONS. Each devotion will add meaning to your Lenten Journey. Thank you to the fifty-one people who submitted devotions this year, including two children and five youth! And thanks to the editorial and production team of Susan Long, Lorraine Knitt and Jim Feickert for creating this meaningful Lenten resource. Please remember to thank those who contributed and share with them what their devotions meant to you.

loss, many wonder where to turn for support, or how to help a hurting friend when you just don’t know what to say. Living with Loss is a workshop for grievers and supporters alike. Participants will learn about the grieving process and gain tools to manage their own grief or to support someone else as they journey through their grief process, and are invited…but not required…to share their personal experiences. Workshop leader Bonnie Bingham, Chair of Trinity’s Bereavement Ministry, helps create a safe and supportive environment where participants can be part of a community of those traveling a similar journey.

If you missed the Intervals of Joy class on Feb. 2, you missed hear-ing Tom Kampman talk about his fascinating career in vocal music. Interspersed with playing a few cuts from his record collection, and circulating many photos, he led us through one era after an-other of his life. It was a real treat to hear his work and listen to his show biz memories.

Tom broke into professional show business in 1956 by singing in the chorus of summer stock theaters in Indian-apolis and, in 1957-58, singing with the St. Louis Muni-cipal Opera. He was working on his Masters in voice at Indiana University. The biggest headliner star was Bob Hope, who reprised his role in the musical “Roberta.”

Next he moved to New York City and joined the “National Chorus of America,” an ensemble of 50 that toured the country with high-quality classical and Ameri-can folk music. Unfortunately it lasted only one season.

The next phase of his career was with Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians. It was the late 50s, and Tom’s first tour was a ten-week, coast-to-coast trip ending in Las Vegas. At one time, the Pennsylvanians sang at the White House for Pres. Eisenhower, who was honoring Sean O’Kelley, president of Ireland. A second gig for Eisenhower was for Nikita Khrushchev and a group of Communist leaders. They performed in the East Room, and Tom felt honored to be part of singing for such important world figures.

Tom’s time with the Pennsylvanians ended when he successfully auditioned for the Ray Charles Singers on the Perry Como Show [Note: No relation to Ray Charles of “Georgia on My Mind” fame.] A group of 12 men and eight women, they performed by themselves but usually backed up the great velvet-voiced Perry. If you remember the “Kraft Music Hall,” Tom’s chorus was able to perform with Bing Crosby, Betty Grable, Anne Bancroft, Dennis Weaver, George Burns, and Jimmy Durante, among others. The Como schedule allowed Tom to back up other stars in recording sessions, plus on other TV shows, such as Bobby Darin and Kate Smith.

There was time for classical work, too, with the Schola Cantorum, a professional chorus that worked with the New York Philharmonic when Leonard Bernstein was the conductor. Whenever a classical chorus was needed, Schola got the call.

After three years with Perry Como, Tom joined two others to make a jazz trio named “The Group.” They played in night clubs, including the famous Birdland in New York City. They sang on the Johnny Carson Show, and Johnny liked their sound so much, he asked them

back several times. Tom has kept a personal letter of thanks from Johnny in his memorabilia. Johnny even wrote the liner notes for the trio’s second album. The trio sang on the Shari Lewis Show and performed in a Phyllis Diller special. All this time, they were recording albums. They were three juvenile delinquents in “Ten Girls Ago,” with Buster Keaton [an all-out idol of Tom’s], Bert Lahr, and Dion of the Belmonts.

When rock and roll, The Beatles, and folk music made

work hard to find for a jazz trio, Tom began to work with the Jimmy Dean Show, singing with the Chuck Cassey Singers. Now he learned to like country music! Tom also ran Jimmy’s music publishing business and directed his eight-man back-up group called “The Cimarron Singers.”

In 1968, Tom and Willa with their three children, a parakeet, and a dachshund moved to Denver, where Tom worked as music director, singer, arranger, and composer at Carousel Productions in Edgewater. He also directed and sang lead in a male quartet at Olinger Funeral Home, performing in about 5,000 services over eight years. The Kampmans came to Trinity in 1969.

What a bundle of talent we have singing tenor in our Chancel Choir every Sunday morning. Tom, we appreciate you and the many compositions you have prepared for our services. Your career has been terrific! Keep on composing and keep on singing! — Carol Feickert

[Note: Intervals of Joy class is open to everyone. The list of presenters is printed in the Vision each month. Come and meet these fascinating people in our midst!]

The Artist’s Way Trinity’s Music & Arts Ministry is pleased to offer the

third course in The Artist’s Way series, Finding Water, The Art of Perseverance by Julia Cameron. Based on Cameron’s philosophy that creativity is a divine and spiritual practice, the student of the techniques in her Artist’s Way books begins to see how creativity is inher-ent in all of us. Finding Water focuses on uncovering resources from within ourselves and in our circles of community that support, nurture and empower us at any stage of discovering, recovering or developing our creative calling. Facilitated by Linda Sperber, the 12-week course will be held Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. beginning March 4. The cost of the course is $125. Contact Judith Mitchell to register or for more information at [email protected]. Trinity to Host Children’s Music Festival and Concert

The day will in-clude a variety of music-making experiences – both choral and instrumental, opportunities for fellowship, and work with clinician Judith Mitchell to prepare combined pieces to be presented at an afternoon concert. Please join us for our free concert in Trinity’s

Sanctuary at 2 p.m. Treat yourself to the musical gifts and joyful spirits our children have to offer!

Reflection on The Rule of St. Benedict

In the Preface of The Rule of St. Benedict in English, written by Rev. Timothy Fry O.S.B. of St. Benedict’s Abbey in Atchison, Kansas, he states, “St. Benedict wrote his Rule primarily for monks, but its sound principles for working together and living together have proved rele-vant to people of all classes of society through fifteen hundred years.”

St. Benedict (480-547 CE) founded a monastery about 80 miles south of Rome, and except for this fact and his book, little else is known about him. But by studying the Rule, Rev. Fry describes St. Benedict as a keen observer of human nature, a person who sought a spirit of willingness and sincerity, and also one that respected the freedom of people while showing a humane approach to personal relationships.

Even Pope St. Gregory the Great (Pope from 590-604 CE) depicted St. Benedict as “A man of God” and commended the Rule for, “its discretion and lucidity of style.” Those traits are the reason many people around the world try to incorporate those same rules into their lives today and why on Sunday mornings, in Stiles Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church, The Rule of St. Benedict is studied in conjunction with The Rule of Benedict: A Spirituality for the 21st Century written by Joan Chittister; a source that helps us translate how the Rule can be applied to our everyday lives.

Few documents have the attributes that allow them to be used as references for making our lives a little better, nearly fifteen hundred years after their origin, and all written by a man who believed, “The love of Christ must come before all else.” — Joy Harvey

Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Chapel, we practice Centering Prayer each week, as well as other prayer practices such as Lectio Divina and contemplative journaling in the group setting. We are currently watching Richard Rohr on DVD, followed by reflection time.

Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Chapel, we are learning from the Rule of Benedict and practicing the ancient prayer practice of Lectio Divina. This is a time of quiet prayer for those looking for peace and contemplation.

Reflections on the Value of 9Health Fair

Chris was a 25 year-old recent college graduate starting a new career. Like many young people, she had a good job that did not provide health insurance. She had not seen a doctor for several years because she was never sick. However, her mother had been asking her repeatedly to attend 9Health Fair for the free pap exam. Chris finally relented and went to her neighborhood health fair where the exam was done by the volunteer Nurse Practitioner. A week later Chris received a phone call from a Registered Nurse at 9Health Fair who informed her that the lab results from her exam had been suspicious. The nurse helped Chris schedule further evaluation at a local clinic. She now receives follow-up exams every six months as part of a medical study. A potentially serious problem was identified, further evaluated, and is now under control because Chris took time to “Own Your Health” at 9Health Fair.

The 35th annual 9Health Fair season will be here soon, with over 60 sites in the metropolitan area. The goal is to promote health awareness and encourage individuals to assume responsibility for their own health. Take advantage of this opportunity! For information about the more than 20 free and low-cost medical screenings available, call 303-698-4455 or visit www.9healthfair.org

Don’t miss these downtown Denver fairs:

Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, Pepsi Center (Express Fair), 7 – 11:30 a.m.

Friday, May 2, Trinity Church at Downtown YMCA, 7 a.m. – noon

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering - Mission Sunday, March 30

On March 30, Mission Sunday, Trinity joins United Methodists worldwide in receiving a special offering through One Great Hour of Sharing to support humanitarian aid through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Gifts to this offering underwrite UMCOR’s “costs of doing business.” That helps UMCOR keep its promise that 100 percent of every other gift you make to a specific UMCOR project can be spent on that project – not on home office costs.

UMCOR is a good steward of God’s gifts. Offering gifts over and above those used to cover administrative costs are channeled where they’re most needed. UMCOR’s specialized ministries – responding in disaster, fighting hunger, alleviating poverty, providing relief supplies around the world, and offering hospitality to immigrants and refugees – all assist the most vulnerable people whose need is greatest.

Your gifts mean that UMCOR is right there with hardworking families, people who are affected by storms or war, disaster or disease.

“The One Great Hour of Sharing offering on March 30 provides for those basic needs that make the rest of UMCOR’s work possible,” said the Rev. Sam W. Dixon, former Deputy General Secretary of UMCOR. “Without this offering so much of what UMCOR does to bring hope and healing to the world could not happen.”

The compassion of Jesus makes all things new. As Christians we’re called to do the same: to offer the hands, the heart and the hope of the church wherever people are suffering. Your gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing, channeled through UMCOR, enable the church to answer that call.

As we approach this special offering please prayerfully consider making a generous gift to One Great Hour of Sharing.
