On the coverIt’s time to think Spring! After a long hard winter, the tempera-tures are improving, grass is starting to grow and flowers are beginning to creep out of the ground. As the calendar turns to April, dairy enthusiasts will head to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the Southern Spring National. One animal clearly heading that way will be Morrisland Damion Diana. In January, this Aged Cow owned by Brett Morris, Ninnekah, Oklahoma was tapped as the Grand Champion at the Southwestern Regional Holstein Show in Fort Worth, Texas. Diana will be heading to Stillwater to try and continue her winning ways and take the crown for Oklahoma.

From the Field Welcome to spring! I hope! The forecast finally has overnight lows in the 30’s which looks promising after these bitter last three months we have endured. This spring looks really promising for the dairy industry. Currently we are enjoying record high milk and cull cow prices which are helping to offset still expensive feed stuffs. This may be a great opportunity to buy or sell an animal on one of the upcoming spring sales. These are great ways to advertise your herd and on sale day a great way to meet up with some of your long lost dairy friends. The Southern National Show and the Oklahoma state sale are coming up in April. These both have shown year in and out to exhibit high quality animals who have the ability to go on and compete at the next level. With the Junior Show on Thursday this also is a good time to try to get our youth interested and involved in the Dairy indus-try. On the National scene, the Holstein Board continues to deal with the issue of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding. We are now working to put together the Material Licensing Agree-ments (MLA’s) between all parties involved. As has been the case throughout this whole process we continue to battle to protect the interests of ALL Holstein members not just a few. The National Holstein convention is also just around the cor-ner. With it being held in Iowa this year it might be a chance for some of you to come and get involved with your Association. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Okla-homa.

The shows are coming! The shows are coming! It’s that time of year again. With spring shows just around the corner I thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone what all is needed in preparation to ensure your animals are prepared to be checked in properly for show. Here are some important reminders for National

Shows (and good rules of thumb for local and state shows): 1) You must have health papers for the state vet including a tuberculosis test. 2) All original registration papers, or official duplicate copies, must be present at time of cattle check-in. Only animals with a RHA of 87% or higher will be exhibited. 3) Transfers must be filed at time of check-in and given to a Holstein Association employee with a signed transfer. (For fall shows the transfer deadline is June 1st) 4) All animals being checked in must have one of three forms of identification: a. A minimum of TWO Holstein ear tags (with 1 being at least a Large visible tag) b. An official photo(s) printed on the back of the registration paper c. An official sketch(es) printed on the back of the registration paper 5) Any alternate leads forms will be due to a Holstein Association employee by 5 p.m. the day before the show. The junior must present reason for the need of an alternate leads with the new leadsperson being the same age or younger than the person who owns the animal. 6) An ethics form must be signed by the owner of cattle being shown, or by affiliates of owner of cattle. (If not turned in with entries, it will be required at check-in). 7) White pants must be worn during the junior show, with a white top preferred. (At National Junior shows Holstein Association, USA will provide shirts for juniors to wear in the ring). 8) All entries must be paid in full before the animal walks through the ring.

In order for a smooth and timely check-in, I’d like to again point out that all registration papers need to be present at time of check-in with animals properly identified. This will save you time and money and allow the show management working check-in to catalogue animals more quickly. With proper identification being a topic, I also wanted to take the opportunity to remind you of the Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) rule implemented by USDA. This rule will require animals to have an Animal Identification Number (AIN). The use of the AIN tag is not new to Holstein Assocition, USA. We have provided 840 RFID tags for our customers since 2007. We have seen many customers already make the switch to the use of 840 tags for registration with the TAG ID method. (For these existing 840 herds, they will not have to modify their tag ordering). However, our 840 line has expanded in order to meet the demands of the ADT. The visual 840 tag is an approved device, but please understand that the official layout of these tags will limit the print options available. We see this as an effective inventory tag, with the ability to order custom tags (official and non official) with matching a 840 number, just as we do now.

Due to the constant postal increases and the cost of mailing the magazine, effective June 2014 there will be a slight price increase in the advertising rates. A full page breeder ad will be $190, an increase of $10. A half page breeder ad will be $100, an increase of $10. A quarter page breeder ad will be $55, an increase of $10. This is the first ad increase since 1993. The Mid-States appreciates the support it has received.

Missouri-Based Pennsylvania Cow PowerA cow family born in Missouri is making big waves in Pennsyl-vania and beyond. Heartbeat Rudolph Maggie EX-94 was born in Missouri, one of several animals in a partnership between Larry Hoelscher of Columbia and Joe VanderFeltz of Lawton, Pennsylvania. Joe, the son of the late Leon VanderFeltz was raised on the family farm in Jefferson City. Following college, he moved east to work for Sire Power. After getting married, he settled in Pennsylvania with a Jersey and Holstein farm. Fol-lowing the VanderFeltz herd dispersal, Joe and Larry became partners on a group of animals and created the Foxberry prefix. Of these animals, one was Heartbeak Rudolph Maggie EX-94. It’s through her Outside daughter, Ms Heartbeat JM Mag-gie Mae EX-92 that the family has gained international atten-tion. Following the April 2013 sire summaries, three sons of Maggie Mae emerged in the top TPI lists. Her Baxter sons, McNuggets and Mizzou and Jet Stream son McFly all have current TPI of over 2000. All three bulls are available through Select Sires. In addition her Jet Stream daughter Foxberry Stream Myra topped the Legends of the Fall Sale at $65,000. Her Shamrock son, Coyne-Farms Mack is near the top of the young sire genomic lists.

Heart of America Dairy Forum and Missouri Holstein Convention a Success! The Heart of America Dairy Forum sponsored by the Missouri Dairy Association, held January 23-25 was a huge success with over 500 in attendance. The Thursday night early bird session and Friday speakers played to packed rooms. With a sold-out hotel, Springfield, Missouri was definitely the place to be. Jim Mulhern, the new COO of National Milk Producer kicked off the meetings with a discussion about dairy policy. Friday focused on production information with sessions on feed diets, increasing production and a panel of dairymen discussing ways to increase profit. Dr. Rex Ricketts of Columbia, MO was honored with the Missouri Dairy Association Friend of Agriculture. Kenny Lenz of Bunceton, MO was honored by MDA for his service on the MDA board. The 2015 Heart of America Dairy Forum will be held January 22-24 at the Ramada Oasis Hotel, Springfield, MO. Thanks to Jim Hamilton of the Buffalo News for the Dairy Forum pictures. At the Missouri Holstein Meeting, Jodi Wright, Verona, and Janice Perry, Republic, were recognized for their long service to the Missouri Holstein Association. Jodi served as Executive Secretary and Janice as the Junior Chairman. Groves-Vu Toystory Rona-ET was named the 2013 Missouri Cow of the Year. In 2009, she also received that honor. Blake Wright was honored as the Junior Distinguished Missouri Holstein Member. The All-Missouri and Junior All-Missouri awards were also presented.

Missouri Congressman Billy Long addresses the group at lunch.

MDA President Larry Purdom recognizes Dr. Rex Ricketts on all his work and effort within the dairy industry. Dr. Ricketts has recently retired from the University of Missouri.

Dairyman had the opportunity to visit with the 57 exhibitors.

A great crowd attended the early bird session.

The dairy producer panel featured Rick Scheer, New Haven, MO; Brian Rexing, Ft. Branch, IN; and Gerald Heatwole, McGaheysville, VA.

YDLI (Young Dairy Leaders Institute) Class 8 is in the books! For those of you that don’t know anything about YDLI, it’s a program designed for young people age 22-45 that are active in any aspect of dairying. No matter the breed you work with or the job you hold, as long as it’s dairy related, you are a candidate for the next class. YDLI was a great adventure for me. I was 41 when I was accepted into Class 8, and had second thoughts about what I had gotten myself into. I mean I’ve been out of school a long time. Af-ter finishing the class, I look back at the amazing time I had and the friendships made that I will never forget. Starting at this age reminds me of the Junior awards banquet at last year’s National Convention when the speaker was telling about joining the military after 9-11. He

was several years older than most people starting a military career and thought he knew a lot more because of his age. When a roadside bomb went off and blew both his legs off, the young people saved his life which he is very grateful for. My classmates did not save my life, but I learned a tremendous amount from them no matter what age they were. The topics the speakers spoke on were very useful in today’s society where the average person is three to five gen-erations separated from farming. They trained us on how to deal with media both in print and on camera, conflict management, public policy, leadership skills and so forth. I would highly recommend the class to anyone of age to quality for the group. You will not regret attending, I promise.

Why YDLI? Brad Groves Tell You Why!It’s

Your Chance!

He also enjoyed the daily interaction with his horses and seeing to their care. He traveled many miles to cut-ting horse shows where he made many friends and wonderful memories. He raised and trained one particular palomino mare, Miss Doc’s Pistol, that he felt was God’s special once-in-a-lifetime gift for him. The Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors recog-nized its 2014 Class on February 7, 2014 in Columbia, Missouri. Dairy Leaders from across the country were inducted into the Hall of Honors during a lun-cheon presentation. Following the lun-cheon, awardees and their guests toured the Dairy Hall for a reception. The Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breed-er Award was presented to Lonnie Groves and the Groves-View Dairy of Billings, Missouri. Grove-View was established on a farm near Billings in 1913. In the beginning they milked eight Guernsey cross and Brown Swiss cross cows. As time progressed, Lonnie purchased Hol-steins. With the addition of sons Todd and Brad, today’s herd has grown to 525 Holsteins and Brown Swiss, including 200 milking cows. Groves and his sons have purchased high quality animals to help establish a superior foundation for their herd. Their goal is to breed dairy cattle with high production and extreme type. The farm sells embryos and bulls to AI, both overseas and nationally. A Holstein bull sold to Japan became the #3 bull in Japan. The herd has been recognized by Holstein USA with both the Progres-sive Breeder Registry (PBR) Award and for nine years the Progressive Genetics Award. They have also been awarded the Missouri Holstein Cow of the Year numerous times. In addition to their outstanding Hol-steins, the Groves also have a tremen-dous Brown Swiss herd. In 2013, Groves-View Snickpack Tale was Champion

Brown Swiss in both open and youth shows at the Missouri State Fair. To top the week off, she was also crowned Su-preme Champion of both shows. The farm has received national attention. They have served as a host day tour stop for both the 2009 National Brown Swiss Convention and the 2012 National Hol-stein Convention. Lonnie, his wife Donna, son Todd and wife Shelia; son Brad and wife Gail, along with their grandchildren have developed a top herd that will continue into the fu-ture. Randy Lightfoot, a FFA Advisor for the Fair Play R-2 High School was awarded the Meritorious Service Award. Lightfoot and his Dairy Foods Judging teams have set the standard for excellence in both Missouri and nationally. For the past 10 years, his Dairy Foods team has won the state contest and at the national level placed 3rd once, 2nd five times and have been crowned the National Dairy Foods Team three times. The Dairy Leadership Award was pre-sented to Bob Cary. Until 2010, Bob and son Kevin raised Guernsey and Holsteins on their farm near Canton, MO. They were will known in the show ring. They bred three animals nominated All-Amer-ican and exhibited the unanimous All-American Guernsey Junior Yearling in 1972. In addition to the farm, Bob served for 35 years on the Prairie States Dairy Corporate Board. He also was a mem-ber of the Missouri State Milk Board, the Johne’s Advisory Committee for the Missouri Department of Agriculture, ad-

visory committee of the Missouri State Fair and the American Dairy Association Board. The Pioneer Dairy Leadership Award was presented to Linwood ‘Tip’ Tipton, a driving force in the creation of the Inter-national Dairy Foods Association (IDFA. Tipton grew up on a Missouri dairy farm and graduated from the University of Missouri with a BS in Agriculture Eco-nomics and MS in Economics. After serv-ing as an economist in the dairy indus-try, he was recruited to the Milk Industry Foundation. Tipton is credited as being one of the driving forces behind the processor-funded promotion program fa-mous for the milk moustache and ‘Got Milk’ campaigns. He served as the first president and CEO of IDFA until he re-tired in 2003. Following his retirement, he founded The Tipton Group, a consult-ing and lobbying firm in Washington, DC where he served until his death in 2013. The Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors in located in the Animal Sciences Center at the University of Missouri.

When milk producers first hear of the Margin Protection Program for Dairy Pro-ducers, they become confused about the new farm bill safety net. “It is new and different, but it really isn’t complicated,” says Joe Horner, Uni-versity of Missouri Extension economist. Margin insurance, however, takes more planning than the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) in past farm bills. The USDA program is voluntary, so pro-ducers don’t have to enroll. But the in-surance is subsidized and some is free. The program allows those enrolled to se-lect a level of margin, or income over feed costs. Margins are calculated at the national level, not at farm level. For decision-mak-ing, however, Horner urges producers to know their dairy margin — milk income less feed costs. That margin helps decide which level to insure. USDA will recalculate the margin ev-ery month. If the margin drops below the insured level for two months, the pro-ducer receives a check. Insurance pays when the margin is squeezed.

The insurance rates are fixed for the life of the farm bill. Premiums are higher for producers selling more than 4 million pounds of milk a year. There is a free lower level of insurance. The 4 million pounds level equals about 200 dairy cows. Most Missouri farms are under that level, Horner says. The big decision will be how much margin to insure, Horner says. This takes homework. A producer can insure from 25 percent up to 95 percent of milk sold. Sign-up will be at local USDA Farm Service Agency offices. FSA charges a $100 annual administrative fee, even for the free insurance. Horner cautions that FSA is not ready to take enrollments. The agency is still writing regulations. Meanwhile, MILC continues until the margin protection program arrives, or Sept. 1 at latest. MU Extension has a guide, “How to Compute Your Cost of Producing Milk.” It can be downloaded at extension.mis-souri.edu/p/G3651.

Dairy Margin Protection Information AvailableThe American Soybean As-sociation recognized Dave Drennan from Chester-field, MO. with its Lifetime Achievement Award - Mem-bership Focus at the 2014 Commodity Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The award honors individuals who have provided outstanding leadership and dedication to ASA and helped fur-ther the interests of soybean farmers. Drennan started his career with ASA in 1975 as newsletter editor. Dave was ASA’s first Membership Manager in 1979, In that year, ASA’s membership increased more than 1,400 members. Drennan was also recognized as the number one ASA Regional Manager for membership recruitment in 1980. She is a member of Mclennan County 4-H and participates in several other activities within 4-H including Dairy Cattle Judging and showing market goats.
