Assemblyman John Ceretto 1700 Pine Avenue Niagara Falls, NY 14301 [email protected] Niagara Wheatfield Central School District I would like to invite you to participate in a grassroots advocacy effort that could help save some of our educational programs in WNY. In public schools across the state, as well as here in Niagara Wheatfield, there is concern that our students are being limited in their education program- ming both now and for the foreseeable future. Without leadership in Albany to provide equitable and adequate funding for schools and meaningful mandate relief, districts have continued to cut staff, programs and fund balances. Our schools are running out of time and options. We need your help in delivering this message to state leaders! After five consecutive years of cuts to staff and programs, extracurricular, sports and more, eroding state aid and increasing mandates threaten even deeper budget cuts in the coming year. Without swift and significant change in the way New York State supports public education, we will continue to have compromised educational opportunities for children. The Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) has depleted the resources available to school dis- tricts. Since the first GEA assessment to Niagara Wheatfield, the District has lost approximately $20 million dollars and will continue to lose these resources in the future. Please view the video on the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District’s home web page (www.nwcsd.k12.ny.us) to learn more about the GEA and it's impact on the students in our state. Niagara Wheatfield Central School District

I would like to invite you to participate in a grassroots advocacy effort that could help save some of our educational programs in WNY. In public schools across the state, as well as here in Niagara Wheatfield, there is concern that our students are being limited in their education program-ming both now and for the foreseeable future.

The Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) has depleted the resources available to school dis-tricts.

I encourage you to support the grassroots effort to 'Do Away with the GEA' by sending that message to our elected officials on behalf of the students of New York State!

Pictured above left to right: Ryan Shanor,Ben Raimondo, Abigail Pietrzykowski , and Marisa Zarcone.

During the month of February Errick Road Elemen-tary School in Niagara Wheatfield hosted its 2nd annual Jump Rope for Heart Event to raise money for the Amer-ican Heart Association. This event was coordinated by Physical Education teachers Mrs. Hayes, Mr. Vekich and Mrs. Kane. During the week of February 10th- 14th all stu-dents in grades kindergarten to Fifth participated in many different fitness and jumping stations and learned the im-portance of proper nutrition.

The American Heart Association provides funding for life-saving heart and stroke research and community and ed-ucational programs for our youth. Mrs. Hayes said, “The Jump Rope for Heart Program also teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows students that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community.”

Niagara Wheatfield residents who will need bus service for the 2014-2015 school year are required by State Law and District policy to submit Parochial School busing requests to the Niagara Wheatfield Transportation Department no later than Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Call 215-3300 for information or directions to the NW Transportation Department.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Requests for Parochial School Transportation must be submitted for every student in the family by April 1 of each new school year and are valid only for that year. This allows the district time to plan parochial bus routes for the fall. If you have moved within the District during the past school year, or the student will attend a different school, a new verification of District residency and eligibility will be required. More information regarding NY State and District policies regarding bus service for parochial students, including distance limitations, and rules governing late busing requests may be found at the following website: www.emsc.nysed.gov/nonpub or the District web-site: www.nwcsd.k12.ny.us.

Students in Ms. Culligan’s art class took paper circles, flolded them twice to form a pizza slice shape, drew shapes on the edges, cut them out and opened them to see the “snowflake” they made. Just like no two snowflakes are alike, Ms. Culligan told the students that all their snowflakes would be different and unique!

The students at Niagara Wheatfield’s Errick Road Elemen-tary have been learning about what traits make up good character and sportsmanship. School counselor Liz Antonelli has been so impressed with the progress they have made she asked two special guests to join the students to celebrate their achievements: The Niagara Wheatfield High School Hockey Team and Sabretooth. The stu-dents went wild when Sa-bretooth entered the au-ditorium and challenged the hockey players to try to score a goal through his defense. “It was a great way to cap off this important lesson for our students,” says Ms. Antonelli. “The players answered questions about what they think define good sportsmanship and how they would react to certain situations while playing. Sabretooth interacted with our students and applauded the skits they put on about good character. The students loved it.”

Niagara Wheatfield students Lucas Ciri-no and Rogan Trunzo recently participated in a worthwhile program called Holiday Heroes. The program is run through Complete Senior Care, which is an all-inclusive care for the elderly in Ni-agara County. The participants use their creative talents to turn old unwanted holiday cards into new, beautiful gestures of kindness to be mailed overseas to servicemen and women. “This is a wonderful project for the older adults who feel a sense of pride and purpose while exercising their fine motor skills and keeping their minds active,” says Virginia McAuliffe, who works at the cen-ter. For anyone who wants to help with the Holiday Heroes program we ask that you contact Virginia McAuliffe at (716) 285-8248, ext: 111 or you can mail or drop off the donated cards to the Complete Senior Care at 1302 Main Street, Ni-agara Falls, NY 14301, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

HOLIDAY HEROES

Last spring, more than 6,000 New York State high school musicians in grades ten and eleven auditioned for the chance to be select-ed for one of eight All-State Conference Music Ensembles. Niagara Wheatfield HS band stu-dent Cassie Travers was selected for the New York State School Music Associations’ (NYS-SMA) All-State Conference which was held Thursday, December 5 – Sunday, December 8 in Rochester, NY. Cassie, a French hornist, performed with the All-State Conference Sym-phonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Peter Boonshaft from Hofstra University on Sunday, December 8 in the Eastman School of Music Auditorium.

Comments: “Cassie is one of the finest mu-sicians in the state of New York. She has shown so much growth as a musician since entering high school in ninth grade. This year her accomplishments include first chair horn in the Area All-State Orchestra and All-County Band. She also sat in the first horn section in the All-State Symphonic Band. She has had a remarkable year and we are very proud of her.”

The new law mandates recess when class work is complete and that students must turn in homework before special. Only those stu-dents with completed assignments are allowed recess. Students can complete missing work, but must sit for 3 minutes per missing sheet of work or until it is done, with quality! Behavior is also a factor which is determined by the teacher. Recess can be held inside or outside depending on weather and time.

5th Grade students at Colonial Village Elementary wanted to form a more perfect 5th grade class so they established their own gov-ernment. Students from each class prepared persuasive essays which were read to their classmates. The essays told their peers why they would make a good class Governor. Each student read their essays and each class voted. Three Governors were elected. Those Gover-nors then read their essay to students in each 5th grade class. The entire 5th grade then vot-ed for their overall choice for class President. It was a very close race. Congratuations to 2014 Class President Anna Liddle, Class Vice President Ryan Milleville and Class Secretary of State Alyssa Hopper.

Senate meeting in Committee

House discusses the Bill

For their first order of business, the newly formed Executive Branch decided to create some binding rules for recess, so a Recess Bill was created. Students became Senators and Rep-resentatives as they debated and modified the Recess Bill. After several days in Committee, a Joint Meeting of Congress was held. The Recess Bill was finalized and approved by both houses. It was now left for the signature of the Executive Branch. Secretary Hopper was the first to sign off on the Bill, followed by Vice President Mil-leville. When President Liddle elected to sign the Bill rather than veto it, then the 2014 Recess Law.

ERRICK ROAD K-KIDS HELPS OUT OLIVIA’S BEARS ORGANIZATION

At one time Olivia Gonyea was a typical student at Niagara Wheatfield’s Errick Road Elementary School. Then the unthinkable happened, when she was eight years old she was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Ewings Sarcoma. While she was facing the fight of her life many people sent her gifts and encouragement including the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. But one of the things that really touched her was a bear brought to her by a little boy. “She really cherished that bear and it helped to comfort her,” explains family friend Brooke Moliosky. “When she went into remission she remembered that act of kindness and wanted to do the same for other children fighting cancer.” Olivia’s Bears was born out of that compassion and that need to pay it forward.

Olivia’s organization collects donations and goes to Build A Bear where she and her support-ers make every kind of bear a little child would love, from football and hockey bears to princesses and cheerleaders. She then goes to Roswell and Women and Children’s Hospital where she personally delivers them to children who are undergoing treatment. “It is such a beautiful thing and means so much to the children and their parents,” says Ms. Moliosky. With tears in her eyes she talked about how seeing a healthy and happy Olivia gives the parents some hope. “It just always chokes me up how they respond to her and what she does for their child. I remember one day she gave this little boy a bear and it was just such perfect timing because he had just gotten sick all over his stuffed animal and it was very upsetting to him that it had to be taken away. Then Olivia handed him this new bear to love and it made him so happy.”

The Errick Road K-Kids which is spon-sored by the Kiwanis Club decided they want-ed to help out their alumna’s organization and raised $607.17 for her to brighten the holidays of children who are at Women and Children’s Hospital. Danny Maerten, who helps to men-tor the students through the Kiwanis, says he is really proud of what they accomplished. “This program is about leadership and character and these students certainly showed how caring they are by wanting to reach out to children who need that comfort.”

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that protects the educational rights of stu-dents in temporary housing. Under this law, your children are entitled to important rights and services. Knowing the protections your children are legally entitled to can help you advocate more effectively for them. The McKinney-Vento Act defines “homeless children and youths” as any student who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. If you have been temporarily displaced from your home due to loss of income, fire, a domestic situation, etc., and you are currently living in temporary housing your child has educational rights under this law. Loss of your home should not interrupt your child’s attendance at school. If you or someone that you know may be affected by one of the above situations, please contact the NWCSD McKinney Vento liaison at 215-3670.

Niagara Wheatfield teach-ers Lori Pruyn and Nicole Pasceri decid-ed to give their students a lesson on the true meaning of the holidays. They told them about some new residents in the Buffalo area, many who had to flee their country with little more than the clothes on their backs to escape to a safer coun-try. “My son is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and works with some of these people,” says Ms. Pruyn. “He was telling me that many of them were not prepared for the harsh West-ern New York winter and did not have many possessions at all. When I told him about how generous our third grad-ers and their families are he put me in touch with the Jewish Family Services who gave us names, ages and genders so we could put together care packages for them.”

The students brought in new and gently used clothing and toys for the children and Barker Vic-tory Dental donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for each refugee. The students then spent a day wrapping and decorating boxes for the refugees to open over the holidays. “We are glad to help them because they have nothing,” says student Elisa Dixon. “We are going to do our best work decorating the boxes and color and do cutouts of winter scenes,” says Reilly Coleman.

“We are so proud of the compassion these children are showing those less fortunate,” says Ms. Pruyn. “We have many gifts to give these people to make their holiday and winter brighter.”

Sixth grade students at ETMS recently completed research projects related to inventions and discoveries throughout history. Students became involved immediately by choosing a topic of high interest and developing thoughtful questions to research. The students practiced their research and note-making skills as they gathered information from library books, online encyclopedias, and through web searches using our classroom netbooks. The students continued working through the writing process as they drafted their articles, conferenced with group members and teachers to revise their work, and then edited and published their final drafts. In addition to their written pieces, students created artistic displays to highlight the research topic. Replicas, artifacts, and informative slide shows enhanced each group’s project. Parents and school staff were invited to view their hard work during a “History Museum.” Visitors had the opportu-nity to ask each display's creators questions about their research. Students showed pride in their work and appreciated the many compliments they received.

Many students at Colonial Village use a wonderful xtramath.org to practice math fact fluency. Students can practice addition, sub-traction, multiplication, and division with xtra-math.org. Students begin at mastering facts within three seconds, and then progress to two seconds and finally to 1.5 seconds.

One student who has excelled with this program is Gavin Yates, a third grade student in Ms. Marsh’s class. Gavin is a wonderful math student. Just weeks into using xtramath.org, he had moved onto three-second multipli-cation. By December, he had finished all facts in two second or less! Currently, Gavin has completed addition, subtraction, and multipli-cation in 1.5 seconds and is working diligently to soon complete division! Way to go Gavin, CV is extremely proud of you!

Elementary Celebrates DARE Program

Graduation ******************************************

Students from Colonial Village El-ementary School celebrated their gradu-ation from the DARE program. The DARE program is sponsored and presented by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department. Offi-cers met with students over a 9 week period and provided instruction. Students learned about good decision making that can be used for every situation. They learned how to respond to bullying and peer pressure by play-acting real life situation. The students were instructed in the perils of drug and to-bacco use as well. To graduate, students created a personal essay that expressed what DARE taught them.

ERRICK ROAD ELEMENTARY HELPS OUT FURRY FRIENDS AT BUFFALO HUMANE

Students at Niagara Wheatfield’s Errick Road Elementary School decided to help out the furry friends at Buffalo Humane. Buffalo Humane is a no kill animal rescue organization that relies on donations to help with the animals’ welfare. Each class took part in the fundraiser and col-lected items that are needed such as dog and cat food, litter, cleaning supplies, pet toys, blankets, paper towels, etc. “Our students organized it and we are so proud of them. We collected over 500 items,” said School Counselor Liz Antonelli. “The class that brought in the most items was Mrs. Jen-nifer Wido’s and they won an ice cream party.”

Students in Ms. Culligan’s art classes made pictures of corn for the Thanksgiving holiday. The students focused on texture and overlapping tech-niques, discussed primary and secondary colors, and practiced their drawing and gluing skills.

A veteran or soldier’s day was made a little bit brighter during several occasions, thanks to Mrs. Jones’ seventh grade Writing Skillfully students. The students had a taste of writing for the real world when they created cards and wrote notes that were sent to veterans for Veteran’s Day, deployed sol-diers during the holidays, and local and deployed soldiers for Valentine’s Day. Mrs. Jones teamed up with Mrs. Farnham, also at Edward Town Middle School, who had connections with an organization that sent care packages to deployed soldiers and held events for local veterans. The Veteran’s Day cards went to the Tuscarora Nation, Town of Niagara Veterans after the Veteran’s Day ceremony, and the Am-vets of Town of Niagara. After the Veteran’s Day cer-emony, veterans walked to a luncheon passing cards of thanks and gratitude for their service, which were hung on the walls. During the holidays, cards that had words of encouragement and a funny joke to bright-en the soldiers’ day were attached to care packages sent to Camp Leatherneck in the Helmand Province of Southwestern Afghanistan. Most recently, students sent Valentine’s Day cards to local soldiers and de-ployed soldiers in Afghanistan, again using humor and words of thanks. “It is important for students to write for a real audience,” Mrs. Jones explains. “It motivates students to know that a person besides their teacher will be reading their words. Students often take their work more seriously, writing several drafts before they are satisfied that they have communicated effectively and that there are no errors in spelling and punctuation.” Words are powerful, and using them to show appreciation to soldiers, past and present, is certainly as real as it can get.

Edward Town Middle School’s Seventh Grade Writing Skillfully Students

Students from West Street’s first grade team reached out to our local Meals On Wheels this past Valentine’s Day. As part of a commu-nity service project, first graders made special Valentines for the more than 60 deserving cli-ents here in our community. Students wrote a special “Roses are red . . . poem for each cli-ent, packed a treat bag, and rolled them up in a magazine. They were then wrapped in wrap-ping paper that the children had decorated, and tied off to look like a big piece of candy. A big thank you to our generous families for donat-ing magazines, chocolates, and candy to help make this project possible. Miss Lori from Meals On Wheels was grateful and thrilled to receive these special gifts for her clients. She

explained to the children that many of the people they deliver meals to rarely get out anymore and love to hear from children. We were all glad to help make Valentine’s Day a little “sweeter” for everyone!!!!
