Beginning on March 31, our regular Monday matches will begin for the season. For the format for the first event, we will score one best ball per hole from a four man team. Remember you may sign up online or in the locker room. The Monday matches will continue through October.

The SMGA’s Spring Tournament will be Friday, April 11. It’s a Shamble event and includes a full breakfast and luncheon. This one fills up fast, so don’t dilly dally and register now.

—by Jay King Golf Tips A few players joke “Our group doesn’t play by the rules… we don’t play for millions.” While this may be true, the rules of golf aren’t only about incurring penalties… they are also used to help you in situations such as

relief from obstructions, loose impediments, etc. Regardless, we all are proud that golf is one of the few sports in which we honor the spirit of the game and “referee ourselves” during play.

With only 34 Rules, one would think they would be easy to understand. However the USGA gets thousands of inquiries for clarification on those rules each year. The key to understanding the rules is to study the “defined terms” in the beginning of the rule book. There are over 50 defined terms. So if you want to increase your knowledge, start by reading and understanding those definitions.

One example of a defined term would be under loose impediments. Sand and loose soil are loose impediment on the putting green, but not elsewhere. I believe last year Rory McIlroy was penalized for improving his line of play by removing sand from fringe (not on putting green) during the Abu Dhabi Championship.

The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct a Rules of Golf workshop March 10th and all participants will receive a copy of the Rules of Golf. Sign up and work towards a better understanding of the rules this year!

~Golf Quip: There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have and which one is wearing the glove.
