Mayor Michael Udine’s Parkland Report

The month of March 2014 marks another anniversary of

my serving as Mayor of the City of Parkland. I am proud to serve as your Mayor since Parkland is truly one of the premier Cities in South Florida. I enjoy serving the community, and I would like to thank the residents, city employees and Parkland business owners for their continued support. We are doing great things in Parkland and it shows throughout our City. It is truly my honor and privilege to serve you and earn your trust each and every day! Please check out our City of Parkland website at www.cityofparkland.org, and take a look at two new updates. The first being that we have recently rolled out an “adopt-a-park” program, where residents and businesses can get involved by adopting a park in an effort to beautify and support it. It’s a great way to show community spirit and involvement. We are also again putting out

a citizen survey. I urge everyone to take a few minutes to click through the questions. These surveys really help us when we do our annual strategic planning and to develop future programs for the City.

Again this year, Parkland had among the lowest crime rates in South Florida. We were recently named as one of the safest Cities in the country. We had another nice reduction and continue to year after year. The biggest issues we face in the public safety arena, however, are in the parking lots near our parks. Please make sure you lock your car doors and DO NOT leave anything of value in plain sight! Additionally, if you see anything that looks suspicious at the parks or in any of the neighborhoods throughout the City, please call 911 immediately. It is better to be safe than sorry, and this will help the police in their day-to-day patrols.

On another note, the

City is attempting to do what we can to assist our local retail centers with some changes to our signage code. It is important, for all of us in the City, that these centers do well and thrive. They, like other small business establishments, face numerous challenges in this economy. If you can, please try to help. We have some of the best restaurants and local merchants in South Florida right here in Parkland; stop in! Give these merchants a chance to earn your business. It benefits all of us when these businesses do well.

Spring is almost here and there are a lot of fun events planned for the

community this month.

Students, don’t miss the City’s Annual Teen Political Forum on March 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event, which is open to local high school students, will be held at J.P. Taravella High School. The purpose of this Forum is to have City and County elected officials enlighten students with their personal experiences as elected officials and address teen issues of interest, concluding with a Q & A from the student audience. This is a great opportunity for students to talk directly to their elected officials on topics that are significant to them. The event is open to all high school students who live in Coral Springs or who attend our local high schools: Coral Springs High, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, Coral Glades High, Coral Springs Charter, J. P. Taravella High and Coral Springs Christian Academy. Students may receive service hours for attending the Forum. Students who are home-schooled or attend private schools and live in Coral Springs are also welcome. For details, visit www.CoralSprings.org.

Residents who would like to discuss neighborhood

improvements, voice a concern, or simply hear more about the City’s presence in their immediate community are invited to attend the Slice of the Springs meetings. The meetings allow residents to interact directly with staff members from all departments of the City, including Police, Fire, Community Development and Code Enforcement. and start training for the Coral Springs Half Marathon on Saturday, March 29 at 6 a.m. Broward Health Coral Springs will also have their annual Race for Women’s Wellness 5K Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m. Both races will benefit a cause that is dear to me - the Broward Health Coral Springs Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, which provides free mammograms to women in our community who financially can’t afford them. Runners and walkers of both the half marathon and 5K will start at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex on Sportsplex Drive. Prices for adults for the half marathon are $75, and $35 for the Race for Women’s Wellness 5K, and $15 for students 19-and-under. Registration closes on March 27 and prices will go up as event nears. Additionally, they are making valuable connections with each other, and just this past month got to personally meet with the City Commission and staff as well as participate in a mock Commission

meeting at “Government Day”. The Chamber staff and special

event committee is currently working on the Chamber’s annual awards Gala, which will be held on April 25th at the Parkland Golf and Country Club. The event will feature a completely new format with a very exciting new theme this year with lots of food, fun and prizes… more information to follow in the next article.

DOUGLAS GOLF TOURNAMENT ….. SOARING WITH THE EAGLE REGIMENT

on April 12, 2014, The Country Club of Coral will play host

to the Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment Golf Tournament. So, grab those clubs, lace on those golf shoes, and support a great cause for a wonderful organization of young adults. This fund-raiser will support the Eagle Regiment Marching Band program. You and your friends can enjoy a day of great golf and fun, while helping the Marching Eagles Parent Association with the purchase of new uniforms, maintaining instruments, and assisting with supplement travel costs for students during the competitive season.

JM Lexus will be sponsoring the Hole In One competition for this wonderful event. Entry fee is $125 per player, which includes 18 holes of golf at a first-rate golf course, cart, goodie bag, banquet, awards, and a beverage. A Longest Drive and Closest To The Pin Contest will also be in place for the event. The tournament will feature a Scramble Format, with Team Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. UM is medical coverage for you and your passengers at the time of an accident involving someone who has no insurance or just the state required minimum insurance. It was recently estimated that one out of every five drivers in South Florida is uninsured. The next time you are on the road, look at the drivers around you. The odds are one of the four cars you see is uninsured.

Secondly, UM is coverage for both uninsured and underinsured (UIM) motorists. A motorist with minimum limits only has $10,000 available per person for the medical bills for you or your passengers and $20,000 for the entire accident, no matter how many people are involved.

UM is a very inexpensive coverage to buy. As an example, a one personal auto policy that

has $100,000 per person; $300,000 per accident limits for the UM portion was only a total of $65 of the total semi-annual premium.

Many people think that UM isn’t important because their collision and medical insurance will cover these expenses. However, even in the best of circumstances the medical insurance deductibles will not be covered. In addition, some medical insurance policies could exclude injuries caused by another. And, what about your passengers? Your medical insurance certainly wouldn’t cover them.

As a guideline, you may want to consider setting the limits for your UM coverage to be the same as your regular automobile liability limits. So, for example, if you have 100,000/300,000 liability limits, you would also want to have 100,000/300,000 uninsured motorist limits.

In these tough economic times it is understandable that we may need to cut corners on our expenses whenever possible. Your auto insurance should never be on that list

Frequently we see customers who select the minimum limits on their Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage. However, this

could very well be a case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish. Uninsured Motorist is inexpensive but important coverage for you and your passengers.

When TPC Eagle Trace was built in 1983, it became just the second TPC course, and the first member-based club, in a network the PGA TOUR started developing around the United States (the first was TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship). That’s why golfers will see spectator mounds around the course, including grandstand-type seating carved into the area surrounding the 18th green.

“TPC Eagle Trace is truly one of the best tests of golf I have ever played,” said Derek Fox, head professional and interim general manager. “We have Members who have played here for 30 years and never tire of the challenge.”

The layout has some unique characteristics for a Florida golf course, including an island green, three greens surrounded by wooden bulkheads, and it doesn’t have a single palm tree on the property—a rarity in southern Florida.

Fox also made it a point to explain that while the PGA TOUR is not part of the yearly schedule at Eagle Trace, “the golf course has stood the test of time as it currently plays host to the Champions Tour Q-School Final Stage every other year.”

Eagle Trace is located east of the Sawgrass Expressway in western Broward County, just north of Atlantic Boulevard and is easily accessible from Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.

When ClubLink acquired TPC Eagle Trace in Coral Springs, Fla., it added another PGA TOUR-caliber facility to its family of outstanding courses. The new addition, which now is a Prestige-level Member Club, hosted the Honda Classic from 1984 to 1991 and then again in 1996.

Fund A Foot... as part of our 2014 PTA Playground Project Fundraising Campaign we are asking for donations of square footage to replace the sand on our existing playground with poured in-place rubber. Donations are in increments of $20 per square foot. For each square foot that you donate, your child’s name will be placed on a “shoe” that will be hung in our school’s hallway.

Spring Break is the week of March 24th. We will be on break until March 28th. Enjoy your time with your family! Classes will resume on March 31st.

knows, background checks are routinely performed by employers. The concept of privacy is a thing of the past. Anyone with internet access can obtain virtually any information sought. With just a few clicks, criminal history records can be seen by the general public -- in their entirety. Even if an arrest did not result in a conviction, simply having an arrest record can cause serious challenges to people who are trying to find a job, get approved for housing, or even applying for admission to school.

Contrary to popular belief, a criminal arrest record does not simply go away over time. Instead, arrest and court records remain public and permanent unless a court renders an order to seal or expunge.

Florida law sets forth the qualifications that must be met to have a criminal record sealed or expunged. First, a petitioner must never

have had an arrest record previously sealed or expunged in any jurisdiction. Additionally, the petitioner must never have been convicted of a crime anywhere, including criminal traffic convictions such as DUI. Finally, a petitioner can only seal or expunge an arrest record if it did not result in a conviction.

The eligibility requirements to seal are slightly different from the requirements to expunge. If the Florida arrest does not result in a conviction or a finding of guilt, or is disposed by the Court by a “withheld adjudication,” then it may be eligible to be sealed. If the Florida arrest was ultimately dismissed by the state, or if the Petitioner was found not guilty at trial, the case may be eligible to be expunged.

A sealed criminal history record means that it is no longer viewable to the general public. An expunged record means that the record has been destroyed. According to Florida law,

once sealed or expunged, the arrest and court records will be hidden from public view. Except under certain situations, as set forth in the statutes, a sealed or expunged arrest record will not be revealed in a routine, non-governmental background check. Certain exceptions do apply, which are detailed in the Florida Statutes.

With certain exceptions, after a record has been sealed or expunged by the Court, the Florida Statutes allow you to lawfully deny or fail to acknowledge a criminal history record on certain applications.

The Sheriff’s Foundation of Bro-ward County improves the quality of life for all citizens by contribut-

ing time and resources to many non-profit organizations to support vital educational and public awareness pro-grams. Just this past year, The Sheriff’s Foundation established the BSO Com-munity Partnership Initiative which supports community programs and or-ganizations that address homeless and mental health challenges in Broward County. They also sponsored Above the Influence: Broward, an event celebrat-ing students who resist peer pressure, violence, and drug use. The devotion and monetary contributions from indi-viduals and local businesses are what keep this vital foundation thriving.

“Shop with the Sheriff” is an annual event that brightens the lives of chil-dren whose parents or guardians can’t afford to buy essential supplies. This year, thanks to the Sheriff’s Founda-tion of Broward County, Sheriff Scott Is-rael shopped at Walmart in Lauderdale Lakes with 50 children. By sponsoring “Shop with the Sheriff,” the Sheriff’s Foundation ensured the holidays were a joyous time for those who are less for-tunate. The smiles on those children’s faces let us know we were really mak-ing a difference.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is also grateful for the continual support received through the Sheriff’s Founda-tion. Through the Fallen Heroes Fund, the foundation provides moral and fi-nancial support to families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty; the fund is utilized by all agencies in Broward County.

Tragically, BSO recently lost one of its own in 2013, Deputy Daniel Rivera, who served in the Pompano Beach district. Thankfully, the Fallen Heroes Fund en-abled Deputy Rivera’s family to travel from New York to Fort Lauderdale to be with him. Also, through the Sheriff’s Foundation, Deputy Rivera’s 10-year-old son, Damian, will be aided by the Deputy Christopher Schaub Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund, named af-ter a BSO deputy who died a year ago

in an on-duty motorcycle accident, will help Damian with school expenses.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is the strong and proud family it is today in part because of the support received from the Sheriff’s Foundation. There are even more valuable examples of how the members of the foundation con-tribute to the success of public safety, but in short, they are an asset to every resident of this county. City of Parkland Recognizes Marjory Stoneman Douglas Girls Volleyball Team

The City of Parkland City Commission has recognized the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Girls volleyball Team

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Girls Varsity Volleyball team concluded their 2013 season by being named District Champions for the 12th year in a row.

Led by coach Austin Clubb, the team finished with a regular season record of 9 -1, went 2-0 in Districts and 0-1 in the Regions.

The Mayor and City Commission would like to congratulate all of the players and coaches of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Volleyball team on their outstanding season.


Too much, too soon?A while ago, I had a client ask if I could help her with

her sick puppy. She was under a year old and weighed less than five pounds. She had been eating

an all natural real food rotational diet, but suddenly became withdrawn, lethargic, with loose stool and coughing. Her owner wanted to know if there was a “special” food that would help.

Since she’d been fed the all the right foods for a while, I immediately suspected that there may have been some other cause. Knowing the right questions to ask, lead me to the problem. The puppy had been taken to an animal hospital for grooming. While she was there, the veterinarian and the tech/groomer decided to do a “preventive” dip of sulfur and lime after being washed with a harsh shampoo. To add to the stress this puppy was experiencing, the veterinarian decided the puppy needed another booster vaccine.

We are constantly stressing the dangers of so-called “preventatives,” including “vaccines” and that they should not be used as routine, but with extreme care and only when real problems are very probable. This puppy had been suffering the side effects of the vaccine, the effects of the toxic dip, and whatever combination these chemicals had created inside it’s tiny body.

The owner was well-educated and a very caring fur-parent, so why did she not believe all the warnings she had seen and heard about vaccines and various drugs? Is it any different than us ignoring the long lists of warnings we see on those drug ads shown on television.

We all too often blindly believe that our doctors and veterinarians are looking out for ourselves and our pet’s health and well-being. Unfortunately, they are not taught health. They are taught medicine. There is a big difference. Veterinarians have a further conflict in that they sell products and services that are unrelated to medicine.

Why would you take your pet to a facility of sick animals for grooming or for a vacation stay? Let’s think! The animal hospital requires that their grooming and boarding clients must be vaccinated in order to prevent them from catching

something while they are there. They know the facility is exposed to all kinds of pathogens from the parade of sick animals they see daily.

We can make decisions for ourselves and assume the resulting consequences. Our pets depend upon us to make the right choices. To do this right, we must ask the right questions of the right people.

This puppy ended up to be okay once treated with a diet that included foods that aided in the detoxification of its’ tiny body and the pet parent learned a valuable lesson on not adding any more poison to that body. Once a toxin is put

in the days of the com-puter world

and internet accessibility to a multitude of in-formation many home buyers and sellers are asking the ques-tion lately - “do I really need an agent?” Need? No. Want? Yes.

The availabil-ity of pertinent information

on-line has made the home buying experience a bit easier then it was just a decade ago - however, this does NOT in any way correlate to the demise of the Real Estate agent. While sites like Realtor.com, Zillow and the like do provide some “good” information they do not provide what is necessary to successfully close a transaction on your own. Finding a home and verifying value is of course a part of the home search and selling process, albeit a very small one. This due diligence process is simply a small piece of the pie.

So why work with an agent? Quite simply for three crucial factors - Direc-tion, Protection and Attention.

dirEcTionI’ve often stated that “selling the

home is the easy part” and what I mean by that is plain and simple - It IS easy to sell a home or find a home to buy. Obtaining a seller or buyer with your specific needs may be daunting and may take some time, but generally anyone can do it in the technology age. The days of print advertising, MLS “book” (listings were once listed in actual broker books before the inter-net), and a Rolodex full of buyers is no longer necessary to get your home

under contract. There are plenty of sites offering help in doing so - so why do you need an agent? Direction.

An agent can and will direct you through the maze of a successful closing. It takes full time knowledge and experi-ence to know what pitfalls to look out for. A “virgin” homebuyer simply doesn’t know these procedures and can and will often put themselves in a sticky situation with either the lender, mortgage holder, title company, inspection agent, escrow account holder, appraisal work, contract deadlines, etc. Not knowing the correct “direction” to move in a transaction can quickly put you back to square one - often scratching your head wondering what you did wrong.

Think of an agent as your guide - your Sherpa in the Real Estate journey. Would you climb Everest for the first time without a guide? Then why would you put such a large transaction in your own hands?

tion in your Real Estate transaction. Even if you know the way, if not prop-erly trained to watch out for red flags throughout the sales and/or purchase process a buyer or seller can easily slip down a slippery slope. Did your buyer neglect to place the correct amount of funds in escrow? What retribution do you have?

Did the seller take items out of the house that you had originally stated in contract?

What do you do now? - Did the ap-praisal come back lower then contract price? - Is anyone at fault?

Will the buyers not release escrow out of backing out of a deal after 3 weeks? - Are you due that money?

Did the inspection report come back showing matters unknown to seller?

Who has to repair? - Will the HOA not approve your sale just days before clos-

ing? – Now what?The list goes on and on, I’ve dealt

with horror stories throughout my ca-reer and luckily with time, knowledge and patience I have been able to get through them all - protecting my clients the whole way. Without my knowl-edge in these situations these people would be out not only a home they had their eye on but in a few instances they would have been out tens of thousands of dollars.

Protection in these transactions is cru-cial - we are talking LARGE purchases here people!!

Don’t go it alone.

paced world. Cell phones, email, G4 speeds and the like have made our world move FAST. An agents job is obviously to stay on top of the entire transaction from contract to close. This has become tougher and tougher for sellers and/or buyers to maintain on their own. With most buyers/sellers having full time jobs themselves keep-ing up with the transaction is simply impossible. Without having a “wing-man” giving you the attention you need and deserve you can and will put yourself in a situation that may at that point become unsolvable.

I can’t speak for all agents, but my main goal when working with any buyers or sellers is to offer my complete and undivided attention WHENEVER they need it. True 24/7 availability and service, if you can’t move quickly in this environment you don’t stand a chance. And if you have a full time job, you simply can’t move quickly without an agent on your wing.

Believe it or not, thieves drive around looking into mailboxes to see if the box is stuffed. if the box has three or four days worth of mail in it, chances are you’re not home. if you leave your car in the garage, ask a neighbor to park in your driveway during your vacation. also, ask them to park on different sides of the driveway each day as well.

go to your local home improve-ment store and buy two or three light timers. Today’s technology has wireless digital timers for relatively low costs. put a timer in different rooms to come on and off at different times. Make sure to inform a neighbor of the rooms where lights are going to be on and off.

remove your smaller valuables such as jewelry, cash and firearms. Most burglars are looking for the small items to put in a pillowcase and leave. if you remove the most

valuable items, you have lessened your losses. X-Boxes, games, TV’s, dVd players etc. are all replaceable, but grandma’s diamond ring isn’t.

Some people have put up hur-ricane shutters when leaving on vacation thinking this will keep burglars out. This is the worst thing you could possibly do. if a thief gets inside, they have unlimited time to rob your house with no one seeing or bothering them.
