Hey Slugs! It's Spring time and there is no better time to get sustainable! Here are a few ideas on how you can get extra sustainable this spring. 1. Start a garden or get involved in one Spring is the perfect time to start a garden. Start planting tomatoes, zucchinis and strawberries and enjoy the fruits of your labor all summer! If you don't have access to a plot to grow a personal garden there are plenty of places to get involved in gardening on campus. Check out the Chadwick Garden, the Kresge Garden, the College Eight Garden, and more!

2. Thrift your new Spring wardrobe When the sun starts shining a little brighter and the need for cozy sweaters and sweats becomes less and less we all start digging through our closets to find something more appropriate for the warmer weather. What we find leaves us unsatisfied. "How on Earth did I fit into this dress last year", "How did anyone let me out of the house wearing this bro tank?" When you start asking yourself these types of questions don't head down to Forever 21 or Urban Outfitters. Definitely don't start ordering online (all that packaging is so wasteful!). But hit up one of the local thrift stores. Cross-roads, the Salvation Army, and Goodwill are all easily accessible in Downtown Santa Cruz.

3. Take advantage of the weather Gorgeous Spring weather means there are no longer excuses for driving or busing around campus. Pull out your bike, dust it off, ride it on into the bike co-op on campus, catch your breath and realize the lack of exercise you got this winter, get a tune up, and ride that baby to all your classes! If biking isn't an option for you, hop on your own two feet and enjoy the fresh air and the redwoods on your way to class.

4. Spring Cleaning By the time Spring comes around all the junk can really pile up around your dorm or house. Now is the perfect time to reorganize and get clean. Make sure you recycle everything you can. Any papers you don't need from last quarter or the pile of red bull cans in the corner that are STILL sitting there from finals can all be put in recycling. Before you get rid of anything check and make sure one of your hall mates or housemates can't use it. One person's trash could be someone else's treasure!

Technology Committee “Tech Tip” Social Media Spring Cleaning: 5 Quick Tips to Clean Up your Profiles

Page 10 B O R F O R W A R D

1. Profile photos Each of your social media networks should have the same, or similar, professional head shot of you to maintain consistent branding. The photo should be the correct size, fully in focus and appear friendly and approachable. Make it a current photo! You never have a second chance to make a first impression.

2. Cross Platform Promotion Visit each of your social media networks and make sure that each one lists all the other social media networks you are on. This helps people navigate to the social media platforms they like best and shows your consistent social media presence.

3. Social Media for Your Website Your business website remains the hub of your marketing efforts. All your social media channels should be immediately visible on the homepage and all pages, of your website. On each page of your website, also add the capability to “Like” (Facebook), “Pin” (Pinterest), and Plus+ (Google Plus). This is different than inviting people to join your networks.

4. Save Time Write, then schedule your social media posts to appear at a later time. Set up a free account with Hootsuite, a popular social media dashboard from which you can manage multiple social media ac-counts on different platforms. Tweetdeck is exclusively for management of Twitter accounts. 5. Have fun with your posts! The consistent, helpful content you post is what attracts your current and potential customers to your social media pages. A sense of humor and a strong sense of personality are what will keep them engaged and coming back. Try a funny photo or a quote from a comedian and keep it short.

St. Johns River State College welcomes its newest members to the District Board of Trustees. Marlene Lagasse and Brian Keith were recently appointed by Gover-nor Rick Scott to begin serving their terms. SJR State President Joe Pickens, J.D., said the College welcomes its newest Put-nam County representatives. "We are honored to welcome these dedicated and talented indi-viduals to our Board," Pickens said. "Their diverse backgrounds, professional successes and community connections will be a positive contribution to our stu-dents, the College and its future growth." Lagasse, 52, of East Palatka, is the director of operations for the Boathouse Ma-rina in Palatka. For the past 19 years, she has been a business developer and closer with Estate Title of St. Augustine. Lagasse's additional professional experiences include serving as a nurse at the former Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville. She currently serves as the president of Downtown Palatka, Inc., and is a board member for Palatka Main Street. She was recently elected president of the Palatka Downtown Business As-sociation. Lagasse has also served as a longstanding member of the Putnam County Waterway Committee and the Southside Historic District. Lagasse said she is honored to serve an institution responsible for enhancing the lives of the residents within the College's many close-knit communities. "I am committed to the growth of Putnam County, as well as to the development of the quality, higher educational programs needed to meet our district's workforce needs," she said. She fills a vacant seat and is appointed for a term beginning February 20, 2014, and ending May 31, 2015. SJR State serves approximately 11,000 students in Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties and offers three baccalaureate degrees, more than 40 associate in sci-ence degrees, college credit and vocational certificates in addition to offering the associate in arts degree (transfer degree). St. Johns River State College is accred-ited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate and baccalaureate degrees. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of St. Johns River State College.

The United States Senate has just passed The Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act by a vote of 72-22. The President is expected to sign the legislation in the next few days. The legislation that passed today:

REPEALS (the original Senate bill only delayed) the property-sales provision in the Biggert Waters law (sec. 205) that has triggered the most excessive and inaccurate premium increases over the past year.

REFUNDS (the original Senate bill would not refund) excessive premiums to those who have already seen an increase but were not warned by FEMA prior to purchasing the property. (This would apply to ALL purchases of property including purchases of a second home or commercial property).

RESTORES (the original Senate bill only delayed) the grandfathering of lower rates when new flood maps are issued by repealing Section 207 of the law before any increases can be implemented. See Press release below. PRESS RELEASE Realtors® Applaud Speedy Senate Action on Bipartisan Flood Insurance Affordability Bill "Realtors® applaud the U.S. Senate for passing the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act, H.R. 3370, to curb flood insurance rate hikes for homes and commercial properties. "We appreciate the Senate's swift action on the legislation, which is a responsible and balanced solution to the skyrocketing flood insurance premiums affecting residential and commercial properties that were unintentionally triggered by the Biggert-Waters reforms to the National Flood Insurance Program. " As the leading advocate for home and property owners, NAR applauds this bill for the relief and protection it will bring to businesses and families nationwide, who are experiencing financial hardship because of the extreme and sudden premium increases. We believe this legislation will bring relief to property owners by ensuring a slow and steady phase in of risk-based increases. "Realtors® praise the Senate for their bipartisanship on this important issue and thank Sens. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.) for their leadership and advocacy for the bill. NAR urges President Obama to quickly sign the legislation into law." The passage of revisions to the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act (BW12) is certainly good news for consumers and the Real Estate Industry and the President is expected to quickly sign the bill into law. However, there is likely to be a long wait until FEMA revises its rules so that the changes become effective. Here's some additional information I received this morning from David Thompson, the Florida Association of Insurance Agent's lead instructor (emphasis by author): "Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is that when BW12 became law, it took FEMA over nine months to issue guidance on the impact of the bill. The same can be expected here since several provisions of HR3370 reference "six months" for FEMA to issue guidance. Without specific guidance from FEMA, it is irresponsible to provide a firm answer to a customer on matters relating to HR3370. There will, no doubt, be more MIS-information than information in the mainstream media, and caution should be exercised in relying on anything other than FEMA guidance. The two most common questions to come up will likely be: "Will I get a refund and if so how soon?" ANSWER: "We have to wait for FEMA guidance." "I got a huge renewal bill, do I have to pay this?" ANSWER: "We have to wait for FEMA guidance, but if you don't pay it you will likely not get a policy and could suffer a lapse in coverage or reduction in coverage, and that might jeopardize the ability to grandfather." B U I L D S A L E S M U S C L E B Y E X P A N D I N G C O M F O R T Z O N E S Think like an athlete: You’ll never improve your game if you don’t push yourself a little.

NAR Realtor Magazine Article March 2014 | By Jason Forrest

Whether you’re an agent or a broker, one of the biggest opportunities for personal and sales growth is to expand your comfort zone. Agents who are willing to push just a little further will have more success and be a welcome addition to any team. Likewise, one of the most valuable contributions brokers can make to the success of their team is to encourage and push agents to stretch their comfort zone and thus expand it.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” —Neale Donald Walsch

Everyone’s comfort zone changes over time. If you stay inside your comfort zone, it will shrink. On the other hand, if your step outside of your comfort zone, it will expand to re-encompass you. That’s just the way comfort zones work. Understanding this principle is important to continual growth.

Athletes are aware of this principle and embrace the vigorous training that continues to push them to greater achievements. No pain, no gain, right? For them, it’s always about stretching—stretching muscles, endurance, skills, and knowledge in order to keep improving. Athletes know that if they stop training, they will regress to their old achievement levels very quickly. The sports world is too competitive for them to let that happen.

The housing market is competitive, too. In order to keep winning, we need to have the same mind-set as a star athlete. We must approach comfort zones like athletes do; they don’t start benching 300 pounds in the first ses-sion. But they don’t quit when they reach their current limit, either.

Brokers, if someone on your team has a hard time with follow-up calls, start small. Work together to make a goal of a certain number of calls in a day and work up from there.

Agents, start with a skill set that you want to grow. Once you’ve mastered it, you can add more “weight” (so to speak) and move on. Aim to expand your comfort zone 20 percent at each step.

Don’t go too far, because that causes burnout. But don’t settle for less, or you’ll end up stagnant. Push far enough for long enough, and you’ll be benching (and selling) more than you ever thought possible.
