L ike many, Millie and her first husband were drawn to the Manchester area for the world-class

skiing. They moved to the area in 1975 and commuted to work in New York City. When Millie’s second husband died, many of her friends were investigating a move to Equinox Village. She came to play bridge with friends who had moved here, and it seemed like a fun place to live. “It has only gotten better,” she says.

She shares these tips for finding contentment in a retirement living community:

Be realistic and embrace the change. It was a major decision to come here. We still think of the homes we’ve loved, but you can’t expect that life will be the same as we age. It’s natural to lose enthusiasm and interest in maintaining a home. Retirement communities offer companionship and new things to do and explore.

Know yourself and ask lots of questions. If you want lots of choices for different dining experiences, look at bigger communities that have three or four distinct menus. If you are sensitive to noise, spend some time in the apartment you’re considering to be sure it will not be too noisy for you. The more you ask, the happier you will be.

Keep doing the things you love and try new things, too. Moving to a community doesn’t mean giving anything up. I still golf in the summer and play in the bridge group I have been in for years. And I get exposure to lots of new things: different musical styles, lots of healthy living information, day trips, meditation… “There’s an atmosphere of almost more fun things than you can handle to do.”

Fu n Ways to Investigate Retirement Living This Season

In the Gallery: Long Tra il School’s Internationa l Bacca la u reate Students

This spring, the Gallery at Equinox Village will feature seven young

artists who use their work to express very different themes. And the media are as varied as the subjects. What these artists have in common is that they are all students of Long Trail School’s International Baccalaureate in the Visual Arts.

The students—Eily Anderson of Chittenden, Vt.; Lina Bergamini of West Pawlet, Vt.; Jill Brooks of West Pawlet, Vt.; Angela Krieg of Hebron, N.Y.; Lars Lund of Pawlet, Vt.; Catie Owen of Pawlet, Vt.; and Olivia Stoehr of Danby, Vt.—have worked intensely for two years building their artistic knowledge and skills. This exhibit is the culmination of their work.

“ I am excited about the exhibit, and I think it will be fun to see two years worth of artwork made by myself and my classmates hanging up all together,” said Brooks.

The show will be on display 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily from Friday, March 28 until Monday, May 12.
