GLANCING BACK AT DALLAS’ BACK ON MY FEET PROGRAM AND GREAT PARTNERSHIPS MOVING FORWARD

This is not meant to be a pat myself on the back article. The story I am about to tell you is not about what I did but moreso about the value of great partnerships.

One of my favorite sayings is, “You can measure a man by what he does when nobody is watching.”

Back in 2009, DFWRUNS was hired by the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance to grow and produce its annual Help the Homeless 5K and 2 Mile Fun Walk. As many of us know, homelessness is a lightning rod issue and, for the majority of Americans, is something we choose to ignore.

It is a growing problem that is often swept under the rug as most of us associate homelessness with the dirty and

scary looking guy at the intersection begging for money. We roll up our windows, lock the doors and ignore this fellow human being asking for help.

It is not a sexy charity to support. So how was DFWRUNS supposed to create a 5K run that would help breakdown this stigma of homelessness and

attract the affluent active lifestyle community that does not believe in words like, “can’t”, or qualities like laziness and who believes in earning everything — not asking for handouts.

“The [Back On My Feet Progam] was an instant idea and inspiration to do something similar for the HTH event.”

CATCH US!(IF YOU CAN)

These were the questions I had in my mind. They were the challenges that we were tasked with overcoming. Like any runner, we were motivated to make it happen.

Timing in business can sometimes make or break a great idea. About a month into the project I remember picking up Runner’s World and reading about Anne Mahlum and the Back On My Feet Program she had launched in Philadelphia. It was an instant idea and inspiration to do something similar for the HTH event.

At the time, Run On! was a client of ours. One of the greatest products they sell isn’t running shoes, but it is their training classes. Immediately I had the idea of integrating some residents from the Bridge into the classes.

I “ran” the idea by another great partner on the project, Kathy Beazley of KRB Communications, (who works with us on Joe’s Run too), as well as our mutual client the MDHA. With both of their blessings, I went to Run On! with the idea.

If you know Bob and Rebecca Wallace then you must know about their generosity and community involvement. They both welcomed the idea and not only the training aspect but also to outfit the group from head to toe. Shoes, socks, shorts, tops, and of course sports bras for the ladies.

I first met Jennifer Kimble working the floor at Run On! Mockingbird. She had just taken on the role of class coordinator and for all the reasons above, we needed her blessing too. But we also didn’t want to make the “paying” training class members uncomfortable. As well, we didn’t want our guests from the Bridge to feel uncomfortable either. We went back and forth as to what to do. Do we tell the class members, do we not? Eventually, we felt the right thing to do was to be candid. Not that we were surprised, but we got zero push back. In fact, what we got was inclusion and support.

I recently discovered that the inclusion and support lasted longer than the 6 weeks we trained, what we dubbed the “Dream Team”, but continued for the past 4 years.

Last month I saw a facebook post from BOMF asking for volunteers to help at their annual breakfast. I responded. I also asked the DFWRUNS staff to help out. At the time, I didn’t realize what we were signing up for or how far BOMF had come.

It was a cold January morning when pulled up to the Marriott in downtown Dallas to find a couple hundred people attending the breakfast. We heard inspirational stories, learned about how

Page 4: March 2014

the program has grown and has brought a solution to ending homelessness. I was inspired to see new partners like ACE Cash Express but even more excited to see the original partner, Run On! at a full table in the very front of the room.

It was in my office way back in 2010 when Jennifer and I had a long conference call with BOMF’s national headquarters. At that time, they were evaluating cities in which to expand the program. We made our pitch for Dallas with the promise of great partnerships, strong volunteer support and a City that needed a fresh look at solving a sensitive issue.

Never would I have imagined the impact that BOMF has had in Dallas and how the partners of the

program continue to drive success. Congratulations to all of you who I have come to know who have had an impact on the program including Jennifer Kimble, Lea Valez, Kathy Beazley, Bob and Rebecca Wallace, all the Run On! coaches and class members and recently the On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS staff. I look forward to seeing everyone on May 10th for the Gladiator

Rock ‘N Run and helping us to raise much needed dollars for this important program.

The thought of Ireland conjures up images of vast green pastures and striking, windswept cliffs. But if you’re in Dallas-Fort Worth this St.

Patrick’s Day instead, the imagery will be of the bright green logo on your newly acquired Form Follows Fitness 5K T-Shirt and of cliffs depicted on the wrapper of your favorite, tasty Clif Bar! On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS is lucky to have Clif Bar as sponsor of many 2014 races! The opportunity to work with Clif Bar is our four-leaf clover because they’ll be bringing a variety of products to feature and sample at four of our favorite events.

Legend has it that leprechauns are extremely hard to catch, so instead save your energy in order to catch the Clif Bar street team at the finisher’s village at Joe’s Run 5K/10K, Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest 5K, and at the InTouch Credit Union’s Plano Balloon

Festival Half Marathon & 5K! Like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, there will be a wealthy bounty of delicious energy bars to meet every athlete’s needs at the end of the race course. Try to get your hands

on an original CLIF Bar at Joe’s Run and Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest 5K. CLIF Bar is the original energy bar made with organic ingredients that delivers an optimal blend of nutrition for sustained energy. By combining carbohydrate with protein and fat, CLIF Bar helps extend energy release. This makes it a perfect choice for athletes who want to push further while not only respecting

their bodies, but also their planet. (Clif Bar and Company has been recognized with at least 10 awards for their GREEN practices!)

It is also believed that if you actually do catch a leprechaun, he must grant you 3 wishes. At this year’s Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon & 5K,

however, you don’t have to settle for just three. Ye Ol’ grinning givers at the Clif Bar booth will be offering five different flavors to shake your shamrock! Catch them and be granted one of these great flavors:

“We are excited to be bringing one of our newest products, CLIF MOJO fruit-and-nut to the Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon & 5K!” says Texas Field Marketing Manager, Jeanine Romine. “CLIF MOJO Fruit & Nut and CLIF MOJO Dark Chocolate are great-tasting snack bars crafted with wholesome, nutritious ingredients like fruit, whole nuts and chunks of organic dark chocolate. They are made with high-quality ingredients, such as chunks of organic dark chocolate and visible pieces of fruits, thoughtfully combined to create a snack that gives you the energy you need to get the most out of your day. AND, they are gluten free!” Don’t forget to eat

your pre-race energy bar from your goody bag too!

Whether you’re Irish or not, whether celebrating Paddy’s Day in Dublin or Dallas, we at On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS see it like this; If you’re lucky enough to run and eat Clif Bars, then you’re lucky enough!

Hippity Hoppity! Stonebriar Spring Sprint is on Its Way!

This story sprung to life from the patio in a temperatures around 79 degrees Fahrenheit — each little black key on the laptop

scorching under a cloudless (February??) sky. Is spring really in the air? YOU BET YER YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS IT IS!

Spring is the season of birth and growth, of fresh starts and getting active outdoors! ‘Tis the season for a fresh new race, the Stonebriar Spring Sprint 5K rooted in the city of Frisco, TX. How appropriate this event would sprout up in Frisco because according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, it was the fastest-growing city in the country over the decade of 2000 to 2009. This year, Frisco continues to add new retail, residential, offices, entertainment, and public parks, and On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS has utilized these new resources to present one heck of a race. We dug up new sponsorship opportunities from growing businesses such as Ultra Lawns & Landscaping and cultivated bright, new partnerships with companies like Functional Health & Wellness and FC Dallas. We also worked closely

with the City to permit another entirely original course so participants can enjoy like a breath of fresh air.

Launching a new race is exciting but comes with challenges. So when we begin working with any new client, we look for mutual investment of

time between us and them. Our goal for events is to ensure it grows and matures, giving it the best chance to stand on its own and return each season! It’s like fertilizing your grass with the same old-fashioned, steadfast, fundamentals applied to acquire a perfectly manicured lawn . For us, these are the “Four Ps” (Product, Place, Price, and Promotion), and when blended with new tools like social media, a race can really get its legs under it. We believe in this product — a

great course, strong mission, and huge community commitment. The “Place”

is a prime location in a growing, active area where noteworthy running clubs exist, but the market isn’t saturated with races, and the “Price” for this timed 5K is lower than Alice down the bunny hole! Only $15 Adult Registration ‘til March 23rd and just $5 for 18 & under until April 4th!

What’s the deal with the Resolution Revolution? This was a challenge or, as I have been calling it, an

experience, where myself and Chief Running Officer, Eric Lindberg at #DFWRUNS resolved to run with one club every day in the months of January and February in and around the Dallas, Fort Worth area (respectively).

Are you acing your New Year’s resolution too? If you’re sweating it, lose the poker face and deal yourself in during this month of the clover! Your luck is about to change because we found so many of these running CLUBS were aces! We’re willing to bet the pot of gold that you will see choosing the right one isn’t a gamble.

Our “challenge” was working out the logistics journeying all over at all different times of day. For example, when we organized the list of more than 40 clubs to run with, we also had to keep in mind the times of which clubs met. We had a few days where we ran at 7:00 PM and doubled back the next morning for a run at 5:00 AM. It wasn’t all that bad on the legs but was a little rough during the day not having a full nights rest.

The “experience” was meeting all new clubs and runners in and around the area. It has been a blast thus far! Due to the response we got, we’re still going!

“Everybody always says that knowing your market is everything. Saying it is one thing, but understanding it will help you stay ahead of the pack.” States James Caan, (from The Guardian Small Business Network website.) We at DFWRUNS also want to know our readers and our partners. We aim to start relationships

ACED IT!ACE YOUR RESOLUTION WITH ONE OF THE

with our quiet supporters, reunite with old friends, and make new ones every day! We want to be plugged in more than ever throughout this year and observe others being the best they can be, and continue to learn how to be the best we can be as your local and national race management, marketing and promotions team!

We started our #resolutionrevolution the morning of January 1st with a 5-mile race. Yes, on New Year’s morning Eric and I, and a bunch of others were toeing the line of a race at White Rock Lake Park racing 5 miles. Toeing the line was a bit rough, but what got me through was having mimosa’s to look forward to after my cooldown. The month flew and so did the miles we were putting in with clubs from the Frisco Running Club, to Cedar Hill Running Club, Waxahachie, Irving Running Club and even the Austin track club.

In the month of January alone, we were able to

run with 21 different clubs. Even with a conference in Florida and a long weekend trip to Austin to work the 3M Austin Half Expo playing a bit of a toll on our ability to join a club a couple days, it didn’t stop us from trotting some new routes on our own. At Waxahachie, I ran with a group of beginners who, in my honest opinion, were the most exciting to run with. New runners have so many experiences they are about to

embark on and it all ties into their overall health and fitness too. Hearing the story of someone who lost 90 pounds training for their first 5k or about someone

who ran their first half marathon, makes me think about my first races and those who I’ve coached or talked to prior about their experiences. Seeing their excitement over their training and fitness goals is fun to hear. It’s one of the

reasons I am a race director, have coached, and why I prefer to run with others. I live vicariously through their stories and I couldn’t imagine not being a runner myself

without doing this. I think all runners are like this. It takes us a while or sometimes or reading an article to realize how much we enjoy hearing other runners stories and/or fitness experiences.

I don’t know how to say which is truly the Ace of Clubs, but can sum up each into two words I heard from multiple members of each club when asked how to describe themselves. These two words are: friends and family. That’s not a cliché either. Running is bliss. Bliss is friends and family. So if you’re a new runner, veteran to the sport, or just toying with the idea, there’s a group/ club for you here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We traveled from Waxahachie to Denton to Fort Worth and Frisco to run. Start times ranged from 5 AM to 7 PM. Distance and workouts ranged from doing repeat 400 meter speed workouts to an easy 2-3 mile run or a long 16 miler with tempo work in between. There was

no person better or worse than any runner in the group. Let me repeat that: there was no person better or worse than any runner in the group. All paces were welcome. Run a 5k or marathon in world record pace or run a 5k or marathon at the slowest time ever recorded and you’ll find the humbleness of a runner is consistent in all at the finish line.

There’s a time for work and a time for play. Though we’re continuing to enjoy the “play” part with numerous incredible running groups, we keep one finger on the pulse of the community as part of our business too. After all, as runners, it’s just in our nature to want ahead of the pack.

“Keep your eye on what’s going on, and how your customers’ needs are changing.” reiterates James Caan, “To stay ahead, you need to ensure you

know everything that is going on in your market.” (theguardian.com)

I learned a lot about the running community and I know there are a lot more for us to run with. I can’t wait to continue this resolution and get some more miles with you all. If you ever want to head out for a few with us at On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS, we’re always down for some miles of trials and trials of miles.

Diddley Diddley Dee! Come & Run with Me!How Our Popular Social Run Crowds Continue to Grow

Did you know it is hard to catch a leprechaun, but not because they are particularly fast? If you ever see one, he will use a little of his

magic to make you look away and then vanish soon as you take your eyes off him. Plus, “Leprechauns come from Ireland, a rainy country known for its sparkling green forests, meadows, and hillsides. So of course leprechauns make sure their everyday clothing is green, to blend in with their surroundings and reduce the risk of being seen.” writes author, Martin Nelson Burton in a classic St. Patrick’s Day book. On Your Left! Marketing & Events believes it is their trickery that keeps them from being caught, not their speed. But still, we believe these little mischievous munchins have integrated themselves among the running masses in the DFW area because a large amount of our recent social runners have been frolicking in all shades of shamrock! In February, for example, more than 315 runners and walkers appeared at Rahr & Sons Brewery on Galveston in Fort Worth to kick up their heels as we kicked off the first social run of the 2014 series and at least half of them wore green shirts. Even though it was a “Stoplight Run” in the spirit of Valentine’s Day when runners were asked to wear a red shirt (Stop!) if they were not available for the taking, to wear yellow if the opposite sex should proceed with caution, or green if flirting was a GO!, are we really supposed to believe all those in green weren’t pulling a bit of their own trickery in hopes of a little “luck?” Our second Rahr social event was overrun with nothing BUT green-clad, pint-drinking

tomfooleries and many were even caught shaking out their running legs with a little jig near the speakers.

Not convinced? Leprechauns, by profession, are shoemakers! How else then would you explain all the new shoes that keep appearing at

our Pub Runs? Social runners and walkers are being allowed to test out the latest Asics on the route every third Thursday of each month! If the green detail in the Nimbus 15 didn’t make it obvious enough already, you need to come see for yourselves. Your friends will be green with envy over the incredible stuff we give away! If you were not at the most recent Rahr Social Run, then you were not the winner of Ludacris St. Paddy’s Day concert tickets! If you want to get lucky, you have to catch one of our next social runs…

… or a leprechaun. Can you hear their taunting little voices beckoning,

Who remembers Tootie, Blair, Jo, Natalie, and Mrs. Garrett? “You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you

have the facts of life. The facts of life!” (I know you are singing it in your head!) The same holds true for cholesterol… you take the good, you take the bad, you add in 20% of your triglycerides (TGs), and there you have your total cholesterol!

Fitting that I would be writing this column during February — National Heart Month — and not only that, but on National Go Red Day to promote awareness of heart disease in women. Cardiac disease is the number one cause of death in the world. (Strokes are the number two cause.)

Cholesterol plays a big part in the development of disease in our precious vessels in our heart and our brain.

Here’s a shocker for many of you though: we need cholesterol to

live! We need cholesterol to produce healthy cell membranes. It makes up bile acids that we need in order to digest our food properly. Cholesterol

also allows our body to make vitamin D and certain hormones (estrogen and testosterone). Any food that we eat (not just ones with cholesterol in it),

including carbs, fat, and protein, provides the body with fuel to make cholesterol. Even if we ate a completely cholesterol-free diet, our bodies would still make it to function properly. Almost all cells in the body make the cholesterol they need, but the liver is the most efficient and makes up for any slack. Cholesterol gets around in the blood by mixing with other fats and a tiny protein-covered particle, called a lipoprotein.

Now let’s break the total cholesterol down into the good, the bad, and

triglycerides. The total cholesterol comes from how much your body makes, plus whatever you take in with food, minus what the body excretes or uses to manufacture cells. It is calculated by adding the good, the bad, plus 20% of TGs. Although the latest cholesterol guidelines don’t determine treatment on numbers alone, a cholesterol less than 200 is desirable. 200-239 is considered borderline high, and > 240 is considered high (and doubles the risk of heart disease compared to a cholesterol < 200!).

The bad cholesterol, or LDL (low density lipoprotein), is a better gauge of risk than total cholesterol. LDL acts as fatty ferries to take cholesterol to parts of the body that need it. The problem is, when the blood is overloaded, these ferries will stack up inside blood vessels and make

plaque. Plaque is what narrows vessels and make them less flexible, therefore increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Although we can control some LDL risk, there is a big genetic component to LDL as well. An LDL of less than 100 is optimal. 100-129 is near optimal, 130-159 is borderline high, 160-189 is very high, and 190 and up is very high. (Easy fact of life to remember: LDL starts with “L” and so does “low.” You want a low LDL.)

Your HDL (high density lipoprotein) is the good cholesterol which is made of more protein than fat and works like a vacuum to suck up cholesterol out of the blood and back to the liver where it is metabolized to make bile or recycles it. A low HDL actually increases risk for heart disease (CVD). An HDL of 60 or higher is considered protective against CVD. An HDL of less than 40 for men and less than 50 for women is considered low. (Easy fact of life to remember: HDL starts with “H” and so do “high” and “healthy.” You want a high HDL.)

Elevated triglycerides along with elevated LDL and low HDL speed up “hardening of the arteries.” Less than 100 is optimal. Less than 150 is normal. 150-199 is borderline high, 200-499 is high, and 500 and up is very high.

The main treatment of elevated cholesterol and TG and a low HDL is lifestyle change. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthy foods, (avoiding saturated fats, limiting the amount of sugar and carbs to <60% of total calories, and adding natural omega 3s and 6s such as in fish and flax seeds), exercising on a regular basis, not smoking, and limiting to one alcoholic drink a day for women and two for men can all help.

When lifestyle changes are not enough, there is a class of medications called statins that are very safe and can be lifesaving to those at risk for cardiovascular disease. In November 2013 the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (AHA) updated their

recommendations on the treatment of cholesterol. (It was published in the Nov. 12, 2013 issue of Circulation.) Physicians used to treat high cholesterol based on LDL number, but now the decision to treat has shifted to comprehensively assessing overall risk and includes age, gender, race, family history, and whether a person has diabetes, hypertension, or is a smoker.

The goal of the new guidelines is to make sure statin treatment is used for people who can benefit and live longer and healthier lives. The AHA estimates that up to one third of Americans may benefit from these new recommendations. The four main groups who will benefit include those with known CVD, those with an LDL over 190, persons with diabetes age 40-75 with an LDL 70-189 without CVD, and persons without CVD or DM with an

LDL 70-189 and an estimated ten year CVD risk of greater than 7.5%

The fact is when you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have…along with the other cornerstones of prevention of CVD — lifestyle, weight, and risk assessment… an individualized plan for keeping your cholesterol in check for a long and healthy life.

Please Note: The info in this article is not a substitute for medical advice from your own physician. Dr. Johnson and DFWRUNS/OYL! are not responsible for your cholesterol level, your statin prescription, your vessel plaque, or your ‘80s flashbacks.

Never Too Late and No Excuses Dallas’ Steve Jones says That’s The Ticket! By Steve Jones

EDITOR”S NOTE: Dallas resident, Steve Jones, listened to hundreds of scripts in his 13 years on the job at Dallas Children’s Theater, but the one line this Director of Ticketing & Patron Services heard repeated over and over, day in and day out, didn’t come from the stage. In January 2007, he was again saying, “I need to lose weight!”

My weight had been going up for the last 15 years, reaching

a high of 320+ lbs in 2003. I tried a fad diet, lost some weight, but gained most of it back. Even though on my last birthday I declared my habits must change, there I was sitting around 300 lbs. A bit depressed about the situation, I went home and took real action for once. No more sitting around. I changed into some sweats and went to the local Rec center to work out for the first time in years. Over the next year, I went to the gym, added in walking outdoors, and then starting tweaking my diet. Lost 60 lbs in that first year.

A friend was telling me about some 5K races, so I thought I’d add that into the mix. My first 5K. I walked, except for a few blocks where I attempted to actually run. Boy! Were those few blocks tough! But it only made me tougher because, over the

course of the next year, I slowly increased my miles — going from a 5K to a 10K in 5 months. Another

5 months and I finished my first half-marathon. Added distance and subtracted an additional 40 lbs.

15 years of thinking about losing weight and two years to actually do it.

AND IT’S FUN!

Started attending Run-On! social runs on Wednesday nights. These are free organized runs from 2-4.5 miles of fun, with nice folks, and resulting in new friends. I learned about this big running community I never knew existed! A whole new world.

JANUARY 2012: MARATHON FINISHER!

Last year, with a number of my Run-On! friends, I was able to do the Paris Marathon (the Paris in France, not Texas!).

2006: “GIRLS WON’T DATE ME BECAUSE I’M FAT!” 2014: “NOW I DON’T HAVE THE EXCUSE!”

My life has changed for the better. Of course, I might have thought that “If I can lose this weight, everything will be perfect!” “Perfect” is a false reality. 2006: “Girls won’t date me because I’m fat!” Now

Page 21: March 2014

MARKETING // PUBLICITY // SPONSORSHIPI don’t have the excuse! Everything did not become wine and roses, but the amazing new friends I have in the running community, being in the best health in my adult life, the new adventures, and having more energy makes running/exercising not only cheaper than therapy, but simply makes for a much better life & lifestyle. I see friends my age who are having to take lots of medicine and deal with many health/weight related illnesses. I can only image where I would be physically, mentally, and spiritually if I had not changed direction back in 2007.

NEVER TOO LATE! 40 YEARS OLD? 50, 60? Start off with just a 20 minute walk twice a week,

later add more exercise in the mix and change those eating habits. Maybe it will take 2 years, or 5 years to reach your goal. However, there has to be a Day 1…make it today!

Keep sending us your compliments!

Hopping on Board with City House of FriscoStonebriar Community Church Builds Hope for Youth through their Inaugural Event

Stonebriar Spring Sprint is partnering with the City House

of Frisco to assist in opening two transitional homes in Frisco, Texas, one for boys and one for girls. The number of neglected and homeless youths continues to grow in the Frisco area. When a foster child turns 18, he or she is released from foster care, and in many instances, these young adults are left on their own. The homes will be under the direction of City House, which has a proven system of screening candidates and utilizes a program that provides for a live-in house person, as well as counseling, mentoring, and case management. The immediate goal is to open up one home and a Resource Center that will offer case management, counseling, and life and business skills to the homeless youths in Frisco.

Frisco was voted as one of the best places to live in North Texas, as well as the entire country. They are one of the fastest growing cities in the country and it truly is a great place to raise a family. However, Frisco, along with nearly every community in the

country, has an unrecognized issue — homeless youth. The good news is that the community can do something about it. The community has the opportunity to come together and act, making a real impact on our kids and our community.

City House has been here for at-risk children and young adults for the last 25 years because of the generous support they receive from individuals and businesses throughout Collin County. The number of neglected and homeless youth continues to grow along with the population of Collin County, especially among children in the county ISDs. In 2013, Frisco ISD reported 187 homeless kids and 25 of those were without parents and 13 of

last year’s graduating seniors were homeless! Because of this growth City House is expanding our Transitional Living Program to Frisco.

THE VISIONOpen two transitional

living homes in Frisco, one for boys and one for girls aged 18-22. These homes will be under the auspices of City House,

which has a proven system of screening candidates and utilizes an 18-22 month program that provides for a live-in

house person as well as counseling, mentoring and case management.

Open a Resource Center that will provide case management, counseling and life/business skills to

Page 23: March 2014

the homeless or about to be homeless youth in Frisco.

THE IMMEDIATE GOALOpen at least one home and the resource center by the end of the first quarter of 2014, and then the second home to follow as soon as possible.

THE COST$300,000 to purchase and

refurbish a 4-bedroom, 3-bath home in the area of Collin College, Frisco and the Stonebriar Mall to facilitate the kids getting to school and/or work (by walking or biking). Operational costs are $150,000 per home annually.

City House has made significant progress in raising $722,772 for their Capitol Campaign since they started June 1, 2013. This money would cover the cost or purchasing, updating and furnishing two homes, along with two vans for transportation.

• Throughthegenerousdonationofindividuals, churches and businesses, City House has raised more than $225,000.

•Theyhavereceivedamatchinghousinggrantof$220,000 from Collin County.

•TheCityofFriscoawardedthem$50,000 to help update/refurbish properties that they purchase.

•Theywerejustawardedathree-yearRunaway&Homeless Youth Outreach grant from Health & Human Services that will allow them to establish

our Frisco Youth Resource Center a year before we had hoped.

However, they still have a few more hurdles before they can complete their expansion

into Frisco. City House needs to raise an additional $445,228 to complete their Capitol Campaign, and once they purchase their homes; they will still need operating dollars to pay the costs of maintaining the kids, the homes and the various costs of transportation, utilities and food. It is an ongoing project as opposed to a one-time situation.

If you can help them with any amount or in-kind donation, you can do so by going to the main website at www.CityHouse.org and click on the link at the top right marked “donate” and then under “Giving Options” click on Frisco Expansion. Or, you can make a check to City House – Frisco, and mail it to City House, 902 E. 16th St., Plano, TX 75074.

If there is one thing that both frustrates and excites me most about Dallas it’s our “BIG vision” for what things could look like. The lack of follow through, however, on

projects that could really set this place apart nationally is as maddening as training for a marathon you can’t run. I moved to Dallas four years ago and if there is one Texas City that has untapped potential it is this one.

The gems of the Katy Trail and White Rock Lake are easily discovered. These are the hubs of our recreation and are not too difficult to come across. They are well developed options for taking in a wonderful day of weather actively. These two areas along with the Santa Fe Trail are some of Dallas’s strengths, but they are still among many disjointed trail systems that seemingly are in the middle of nowhere, lead to nowhere and are connected to nothing but in the middle of nowhere DART Stations.

MAKE THE CONNECTION?Ideally a city would have its business districts and

pockets of awesomeness all connected into one trail system that ties everything together for ease of commute and walk ability. I’ve caught glimpses of the potential on the horizon and have even seen the plans to bring this city to life. I’ve heard about a bridge to extend the Katy Trail over Mockingbird Avenue and continuation of the trail to White Rock Lake. The last I saw it was under way a year ago, but I’m still hoping for the two biggest recreational hubs in our city to be connected through a trail. I’ve heard about a trail system to connect the Katy Trail to West Dallas along I-35 and for an urban pedestrian bridge on Continental Avenue to connect downtown to the Bishop Arts District, and also plans for a trail to run from White Rock Lake through the great Trinity Forrest and tie into the Santa Fe Trestle Trail, but why are we still waiting? Perhaps being a part of the BIG vision will take more than filling in as the “I” in a photo from our phones. Our active community needs to get involved and keep these projects moving forward.

RUN FORESTS! RUN!Did you know Dallas is home to one of the largest

urban hardwood forests in the nation? It’s kind of hard

to imagine a forest in the middle of our city with all the concrete and glass, but if developed properly it’s hiding in our back yard. Imagine the Bishop Arts District and Kessler Park being connected to a trail system tied into the encouraging new development of Trinity Groves along the Trinity River levy which is supposedly going to have some water front trails. Imagine the Dallas Heritage Village being connected into all of this as well.

I’m excited for what could be, for the trails that when built could really unify this city and bring it alive merging workability with walkability. I’m excited for future places to jaunt and though it’s encouraging to hear such ideas, we need more steps forward. Our biggest weakness is that our city does not collectively get that we’ve got to get behind the ideas, see the value in the investment and push them forward in order to be something special.

Discovery and adventure are really the driving forces behind a jaunt junkie. In my case it’s also the beard on my face that longs for a manifest destiny come back. It’s that desire to get outside soak in some sunlight, capture some fresh air in the lungs, and explore some untouched land. It’s this urge within me to take in new environments and see them come alive.

Just a few months ago at the Dallas Marathon and Expo I fell victim to the onset of icy road conditions. Our staff personally had put a

lot of time, preparation, and energy into our expo booth to deliver our marketing services for our clients, only to find ourselves sent packing in the cold and headed home.

In my years working events, I’ve quickly found that my best and worst coworker is actually the weather. Great weather can add hundreds of extra race day participants to our events and bad weather can prevent some of them from even leaving their home. Perhaps one of the reasons why On Your Left! Marketing & Events is so versatile in our event management is because the 214 area code seems to season us so well. A North Texas summer and winter can really keep you on

your toes; with such unpredictability you’ve got to be ready for absolutely anything that could be thrown your way.

Often times in event management we are placed in situations where we must rise above the weather that is

completely out of our control in order to pull off our big plans. On Thursday February 6th I faced one of those mornings where you find undesired obstacles crossing your path that you must work through in order to be successful. This particular morning a pop up winter storm had covered Dallas with ice and gifted the city with just enough

snow to stir up chaos on the roads. With a fresh memory of the Dallas Marathon Expo having been cancelled just months before, there was a slight uncertainty to the day. With the Hot Chocolate Run 15k and 5k Expo scheduled to open to the public at 2 PM, and a promotional banner that was not set to be finished in Addison until noon, my day had seemingly gotten a little bit more complicated than I had originally anticipated.

When you are an event organizer sometimes your job requires extreme measures. In this particular moment I found my SUV ice skating the Dallas North Tollway for two hours rather than the quick thirty minutes I had originally allotted for the banner errand the day before. If I learned anything from this experience of driving on the ice, it’s that in managing events you’ve got to keep pushing forward, red lights and stop lights are not your friends but rather your sources for slipping and settling for less than bringing your best. Each event will have some icy patches to navigate through, but in the end one must be able observe and execute under the chaos and pressure without giving up.

Instagram; the month of March OnYourLeft! cookie recipe! #justkidding #DFWRUNS. We all know what Instagram is, right? Instagram is

a social network service that lets members snap a picture and post to their other social media sites immediately, like facebook and twitter. Performing a “hashtag” along with the photo allows users and other people to search for photos and share pictures with their friends in a lot faster timeframe than old photo store stop. We at DFWRUNS encounter thousands of participants and volunteers a year at our events and we want to make sure the moments we capture are seen and shared with you all. You too can share and find your DFWRUNS experience by simply taking a photo and typing in the title “#DFWRUNS”. After sharing the photo, search and see what else comes up from your photo share. Check it out! #DFWRUNS . You’ll find lots of photos here and you’ll get to share your race experience with others too!

While we are stretching our photos and race event experiences out into the social media world for you to see in small ways like instagram, let’s

not forget the small ways we can stretch out a very important component of what our engines are telling to lift while we run and walk. Let’s compare the hashtag of an instagram photo share to an achilles tendon. The achilles is the tendon from the bones in your heel to your calve muscle. With this pulled or ruptured running is painful, walking is out and don’t even think about steps! How can we stretch this tendon out?

Much like stretching your calves, face a wall and stand about 1-2 feet away. Put one foot directly in front of the

other, so your toe of your right foot is touching the left foot heel. Slowly push down on the back leg heal and lean forward at the same time- keeping both feet heal and toes on the ground. Hold this stretch, with no bouncing, for 15-30 seconds and switch position to stretch the other side.

BAGEL ON!

Track season started up this past week so welcome back long distance. Though we haven’t done anything too difficult yet, that still

hasn’t kept me from becoming sore. This season I might have to start icing, which I’ve been avoiding so far. I’m so cold natured that the thought of purposely putting something freezing cold on my skin sounds ridiculous. I’m just going to have to get over it, and do it.

Also recently, I ran the LA FUESS Form Follows Fitness Social Run. It was a social run to prepare for the Form Follows Fitness 5K. Since I did this 5K last year, I was already familiar with the course. I personally love social runs because they are

often free and the crowds are smaller. As much as I love to go to a 5K with hundreds of people to run with, it’s occasionally nice to run one with

only about 30. My Dad and I both ran it and we were both thrilled to see On Your Left! MARKETING & EVENTS owners, Eric and Sharon Lindberg! Before the run, I stretched and eyed who I would be running with. I’ll be honest, I was really nervous when I realized I was the only one there under 21 that wasn’t in a stroller.

One of the things I liked best about this social run compared to others I’ve run is that they had pace leaders running with you at the front, middle, and tail-end. So, even if you were way behind the pack, you still had someone there to tell you where to go. Since this wasn’t an official 5K, however, you had to keep an eye out for traffic and stop at certain streets

for cars to pass. Because of this, everyone was together for about the first mile.

Like most people, I had my headphones in, so I didn’t talk much but still tried to find a person to stick with for most of the 3.1 mile run. This particular person was a dad pushing his six week old son in a stroller. Being the massive baby-lover that I am, I spent a good chunk of the run trying to steal glances of the beautiful baby boy. He was adorable. At times I was a little behind or a few feet ahead, but we mostly kept pace with each other. It was good for my peace of mind to cross the street with an adult since I’m not the tallest 14 year-old in the world.

I finished alive, even after the massive hill at the end. I checked in and was excited to see that I finished 15th out of about 30 people! To celebrate my success, I stuffed myself with bagels, breakfast burritos and orange juice. Way too many bagels. Regardless, I’m getting back into shape and am looking forward to the many 5K’s and track meets in my near future. Of course I’m setting a few goals, (as usual), but this year I want to focus more on enjoying myself rather than beating my personal best. After all, I’m just getting started and I’d hate to get burned out now! Keep Strong and Bagel On!!

“I’m getting back into shape and am looking forward to the many 5ks and track meets in my near future. ”
