Greetings to All and Happy March! Still a chill in the air, but next month might just be the time to break out your P-Car from its long winter’s nap... Lots of fun items to let you know about this month. First, the Zone President’s meeting was attended by VP Scott Ishler and me on March 2. Our region continues to be the model to which others aspire. We discussed some ideas of how we can improve communication and efficiencies within the club which we will implement to make the club even more open and fun for ALL.

An important announcement for you Trackies out there is Tim Hronek has agreed to be on the Track Comittee. Tim will be working with current Track Chair / Utility Infielder, Dale Rabeneck, until Dale and family head south later this year. We are excited that Tim will be learning from the best. And if you’re so inclined, contact Tim or me if you’d like to be a part of the Track program. It’s one of the best parts of our club. In other Rabeneck News, we’re still looking for a Treasurer! If you can count and would like to participate to coordinate our finances, we’d love to have you.

Want to thank KC and the Car Store [sounds like a 70’s band…] again for a great Mid-Winter party. I am still pleased that so many showed up despite challenging weather. So after we thank KC for his hospitality and omnipresent generosity, I get the following email from him:

Hello George & gang-I want to thank you for coming to the mid-winter

party. It was fun for all. As I was driving home in the snow, I came to realize I would like to have a party when it’s warm outside. In the winter we get together and have some fun, but it’s all in doors due to weather and no one brings their car. My thoughts are A Mid-Summer party on Saturday June 8th, a car show and a little outside grilling...

ThanksK.C.

So it looks as though we’ll be having a grilling / car show / ARPCA Fest at the Car Store in June! Thanks KC. We couldn’t have this kind of club event without your support. I think this will be the beginning of a new tradition!

An event to consider in the more immediate future is the Porsche Swap Meet in Hershey on April 20. On the evening before the Swap meet,

there is another event will be running on Friday April 19 in Hershey. The AACA Museum [Antique Auto Club of America] in Hershey has invited our chapter to a special event with Karl Ludvigsen; the distinguished author of Porsche: Origin of the Species. He will be here at the AACA Museum on Friday April 19th where we can enjoy food and beverages along with Karl’s presentation. When we are there we can also enjoy the Porsche Style and Design exhibit with more than 20 Porsches on display. So, again, it might be a fun thing to take a Ferris Bueller Day Off on the 19th and hit the museum on Friday, grab dinner as a group and then hit the Swap Meet on Saturday... Who’s with me?!?!? Shoot me an email if you plan to attend: [email protected] so I can let them know how many attendees will be there.

Want to thank the Auto Palace for hosting our February club meeting. If you haven’t been to this facility, it is one of the most dramatic Porsche showrooms you’ll likely see. And there are exotics beyond Porsches… Thanks as always to Aaron and Debbie for hosting us! We are so fortunate as a region that we have two Porsche dealerships who support our club. Please come and see what we do at our meetings. You might even learn the secret password...

The CANNOT MISS event of the year is the All-Member Dinner which will be held at Rico’s on April 13 [thank you Judi Seiler!]. This is one of our finest events as we introduce ourselves to our newest members. The new ‘pledge master’ will take our initiates and help them cross the bridge into full P-Car cult status… It is truly an event you’ll always remember. Remember, new members go for free and are eligible for terrific prizes that range from free admission to track events to the PVGP weekend. Hope to see as many members as possible, old and new, at this event. Also in April is our Highway Clean-Up [also April 13] and our first club event to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville [April 27]. Check out our website www.arpca.com and our email blasts for more information!!!

A great way to get a conversation started [or get some new content for our newsletter!] is to let the club know about your First Porsche. I’ll get the ball rolling… My first Porsche was a silver 917 race car. It was a Matchbox and thanks to my sainted mother, I still have it… I didn’t know at 4 or 5 years old that it was a Porsche, but I did know that it was cool looking. Fast forward 21 years when TLN [that is The Lovely Nancy…] and I were living in California. We bought a used

1982 911SC Targa in Guards Red from a Navy pilot who just got a job with United and was moving to Chicago. He turned down my first offer, but made the mistake of letting me know when he was moving. That week, I gave him a call to let him know my offer was still in play. Grudgingly, he traded me keys for cash. We brought that car back to Pittsburgh and subsequently joined the Porsche Club. I sometimes see that car rolling around Pittsburgh and smile… Since then, we’ve been fortunate to have had a 1993 911 RS America, a white 1994 968 Coupe, a 2000 Boxster S in speed yellow and a dark green Cayenne Turbo. Whether you have one or many Porsches, you only have 1 first Porsche. Let’s hear about it!

So ARPCAers, the chill is almost behind us. Driving weather is near!!! Thanks for all of the positive comments about the new format of our Rundschau. STILL need to find a key advertiser for our centerfold / calendar! How about your business? It’s an effective way to reach a key demographic on a monthly basis for your product… We’ve submitted our publication to PCA national to snare an award! I bet we bring home some iron! With that, I wish you GUTE FAHRT! --George

Technological advancements are a good thing… except of course when they’re not.

As a male, my DNA is hard-wired to want, have and obtain the latest greatest gadget. Providing of course slush funds permit acquisition. Now this is not to say I am an early adopter. For instance, I will never be caught camping out overnight on Walnut Street in line for an iPhone/iPad/iAnything – ever! That said, I consider myself a fast second. Technology is evolutionary. Technology is also revolutionary changing not only the way we think and do certain things but can eliminate doing them entirely.

Consider GPS/Navigation system: in-car, on smartphones or portable units. Undoubtedly they are a great advancement and real time savers. Particularly when confronting traffic or detours en route to an unfamiliar destination. But, ever find yourself in a distant city’s neighborhood resembling footage of Lebanon circa-1982 coyly reaching for the door lock button as your GPS proudly proclaims “You have arrived at your destination”? I surely have. Fun, huh? Fool me twice… I always cross-reference a trusty road atlas in our vehicles for treks of distance. A 7 year old Rand McNally is rarely ever wrong and any resultant profanity from misguidance is shared “intimately” between humans. Take that Siri! No, not that Suri… geez put down the People, will ya?

Now, ask random sub-20yr olds to plot a route using a road atlas. After explaining what a road atlas is, prepare to be met with some thousand yard stares. What about new cars on the market? Dollars to donuts replies likely will not be quick recitation of horsepower, 0-60 or ¼ mile times, and skid-pad lateral g-forces. Sadly instead will come comments on a cool UI (user interface you luddite) and connectivity to smartphones for Bluetooth streaming or Pandora. Eventually the conversation may turn to “drag-strip” bragging rights. This begs the question:

Are sports cars, dare I say it, becoming irrelevant?

Certainly not! Parts of which are though. Technology has long helped displace drum brakes, points, distributors and carburetors.

LEDs replace incandescent bulbs and HIDs for halogens. Power steering pumps, as driven off a serp belt are disappearing fast. Uh oh, what about manual gearboxes?

Some sports car manufacturers have already dropped one’s ability to row. Can/will Porsche be far behind? No doubt the PDK (in most new cars delivered) is quite a fantastic transmission with dual clutches, 7 speeds and lightening fast shifts. If my driving consisted only of race circuits and machines far too powerful for my own good (a la Turbo S) then I’d absolutely be thrilled to only have PDK. But until I’m faced with such dilemmas (checking slush finds now… nope!) I want to choose Shakespeare-ian style: to row or not to row that is the question?

Technology, as stated above, is great until it’s not. PDKs are fantastic advancements but we’re closing in on a crossroad. Please Porsche don’t take away our choice! Otherwise we’ll just hail the next self guided Google Prius nothing blob for transport to there from here. For me, a sports car must have three pedals.

Damn it’s COLD! OK, got that out of my system, for now anyway.

I hope everyone is enjoying their winter here in Western PA. Let’s all hope the Groundhog was right, and we can get our cars out of storage sooner rather than later. I came across this little article, and thought it would be interesting to our members, as well as their families. From Gayle & Michael Blonar, Real Estate Agents for Coldwell-Banker, McMurray, PA

Be sure to share this with the other drivers in your home. Four Common Causes of Car Accidents

(and How to Avoid Them) Isn’t it scary? You’re driving along and all of a

sudden you don’t have control of your vehicle. You grip the steering wheel with both hands and with one violent thrust, press down on the brake pedal as hard as you can until you come to a complete stop.

You look up, then breathe a sigh of relief. No one was hurt. You were lucky…..but what if

there were another car around? Most people rely on luck to save them when

they get into a situation that could lead to a car accident. The feeling is, accidents on the road are unavoidable. Collisions from someone making a bad decision or being distracted, like running a red light or merging into your car, can and do happen even if you’re the safest driver in the world.

But there are accidents you can avoid and they’re actually the most common reasons why car accidents occur. Everyone will face one if not all four of these situations where you lose control of your vehicle. Here’s exactly what to do if, and when, they happen to you:1. Suddenly Swerving? Do this: If you

have to swerve to avoid hitting an animal or another car, turn your car first, then press the brake pedal.

2. Tire Blowout? Do this: If you hear a loud pop and suddenly lose control, steer the car as straight as possible and don’t turn or brake. Press the gas pedal slightly to accelerate, which helps keep the car under control. Then slowly decelerate by pressing the brake to stop your vehicle.

3. Running off the Road? Do this: If the side of your car drops off the edge of the road, steer straight and slow down gradually as you come to a complete stop on the shoulder. Then drive back onto the road.

4. Sliding on the Pavement? Do this: If the roads are wet or icy and your car starts to slide, turn in the direction of the slide and let off the gas. Don’t slam on your brakes or they could lock up, press the brake slowly.

I realize most of you are saying to yourself, DUH! But every now and then, we need to remind ourselves of these simple rules. Take care, happy driving. See ‘yunz soon.

Hello from the almost end of winter! We are receiving a lot of positive feedback on the new look / new size of the Rundschau. This product is always evolving; we constantly look at tweaking items over each month. Also, I sent all of the renewals out to our advertisers – I hope you continue to support us for the following year – check out our track AND social calendar. We are in the process of putting a couple sponsorship opportunities together...more on this as it happens.

More importantly: As ARPCA Members, can you help us get more advertising? Do you know someone who would want to advertise in our newsletter and on our website? WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH ADVERTISERS!

For those of you thinking about it or think you know someone who would be interested in advertising / supporting this publication, we have added a block in the publication with the current rates and contact information. The rates are very reasonable for the publication demographics. In addition, if you are an ARPCA member, you also qualify for special pricing.

For those who support the Rundschau through advertising, we certainly appreciate it. Your support helps keep this publication going.

Shock Asorbers by Duane Smith, Sewickley Porsche Service Manager

It used to be you would push down on the bumper of your (front or rear) of your car and if it rocked more than one and a half times you knew your shocks were bad. That’s no longer a really a valid test. Shock absorbers are made a lot better these days and they don’t seem to react that way when they are worn out.

I get to drive a lot of different cars. New cars, old cars, high mileage, low mileage cars, well maintained cars, and not so well maintained cars. Some cars just feel better than other cars. They can be the same year and model but one will feel better than the other. Usually that difference is the condition of the shocks.

Shocks slowly but progressively go bad. It’s a long, slow, and drawn out process that tricks you. Since they are built much better now days you don’t even notice them going bad or if they are bad. You combine that with Porsche’s best in the business suspension designs and you could drive your car forever and never think you have worn out shocks.

So how do you know when your shocks are worn out? Well it all depends on how and where you use your car. If your car is only street driven your shocks are most likely at the end of their optimum life at 50,000 miles. Chances are if they do not start to leak externally they probably could last up to 100,000 miles. Just keep in mind anything over 50,000 miles and you are not g e t t i n g o p t i m u m performance

out of them and you are sacrificing handling and ride quality.

If you track your car at all shock life expectancy is greatly reduced. Track driven street cars with OE or OE quality shocks could be at the end of their useful life around 20,000-25,000 miles. Sometimes even sooner d e p e n d i n g on how hard and w h a t

frequency they are track

driven. So if you are

driving a car with more than 50,000

miles you may want to consider replacing the

shocks. If you do you will bepleasantly surprised how

much better your car is going to feel. It will breathe new life into

your car again and you will find yourself re-igniting that “excitement” of driving your

favorite car!Be sure to read “Shock Absorbers part 2” next

month where we examine the different types of shocks available.

The ARPCA always has great events. Look at the PVGP, DE’s, Autocrosses, Rally events, and Wine and Shines. Every year so many people work hard to create events where we get to spend time together doing something fun and enjoying those P-Car’s that brought us all to this club.

One of my favorite events is coming up, the All Mem-ber Dinner. If you’re new you must attend (besides, its free for you if you were new to the ARPCA in 2012) and meet some of the best people that you will ever meet. If you’ve been a member for a while, but have never attended, do yourself a favor and come.

After a cold and dreary winter, you owe it to yourself to come out, have dinner, a few drinks, and enjoy the evening. Last year I sat with some folks that I’d never met before and Missie and I had a great time.

This year Judi Seiler has made arrangements for the event to be held at Rico’s in the North Hills. The menu looks fantastic, and I cannot wait to catch up with my Porsche friends. So, again, if you haven’t made it to the All Member Dinner or if your on the fence about it, come on out for an evening of Friends, Dinner, Drinks, Porsches and Prizes. It’s always a good time. Bruce Anderson, PCA and Porsche Icon Passesby Manny Alban, PCA National President, Photo by Leonard Turner

The Porsche Club of America has lost one of its most cherished member and pioneering technical resource. Bruce Anderson passed away this past February. Perhaps appropriately, we received the news during the PCA Winter

Board Meeting, a meeting Bruce attended regularly from 1981 through 2001 as the Chairman of the PCA Technical Committee. Those new to PCA may not realize that Bruce was key in establishing a Technical Committee in PCA. He realized early on the importance of delivering technical information to our members. His legacy lives as the PCA Tech

Committee prepares for a new online launch and continues its successful Tech Academy and Tech Tactics events. Bruce was well known for generously sharing his vast knowledge of Porsche cars. He not only provided questions and answers for PCA’s Porsche Panorama magazine, but for other publications including Excellence Magazine as well. Enthusiasts with an air-cooled 911 more than likely have his 911 Performance Handbook close by in the garage. In fact, I’m convinced that God probably had a misfire on his 911 and needed Bruce’s expertise to fix it.

He and his wife, Stephanie, were fixtures at Porsche Parades and PCA events for many decades. Those who spent time with Bruce knew they were lucky to have known such a great man. With his trademark suspenders and that big smile, he made you feel as though you were the only person in the room.

We at the Porsche Club of America offer our most sincere condolences to Stephanie and the Anderson family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bruce Anderson, Chairman of the PCA Technical Committee 1981-2001

“Start You Engines” is a collection of twenty watercolors with cars as the subject matter. The show begins April 9th and continues through May 22nd. Much of the inspiration for this collection comes from the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and more than half of the collection features Porsche. Lynn Armbrust has been working in watercolor for over twenty years and has had pieces exhibited in regional and national shows. She’s an ARPCA member and was the featured artist at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in 2000. Lynn has been painting cars for quite some time and said that she finds to be the subject matter to be “challenging, inspiring and very rewarding ,thanks much to my husband Doug who is the Porsche fanatic!”

The closing reception will be on Saturday, May 18th from 6pm-8pm at the Hempfield-Greensburg Library. It will be a nice get together

with cheese and wine as well as a meet and greet. No RSVP is necessary. All ARPCA members are invited to attend.

The library is located at 237 S Pennsylvania Ave, Greensburg, PA 15601.

Consider the environment of a racing car where things happen really quickly. Something happens... the driver makes a judgment and works out a solution... then he responds. He inputs the correction. Maybe it is a little too much. Maybe the input is a little too slow.

At racing speeds quite a bit of time has elapsed in terms of determining what is happening. In any event the driver thinks he is responding to something that is happening NOW, but in terms of vehicle dynamics it actually happened a long time ago. In real-time vehicle dynamics, we are lagging far behind the car and rectifying the situation.

The next thing you know, the car is going the other way. The driver reacts to that, by now he is always behind -- he is out-of-phase with the whole situation and he is in real trouble! This out-of-phase-lag often creates errors in judgment drivers act upon because they are convinced it is happening NOW, when it is not.

There is no need to always be behind, out-of-phase with situations you, or others create.

Is there a capability to detect outcomes before they occur?

Yes. Anticipation. It is a competency that immunizes

against incidents.

So… What is anticipation?Women call it “intuition.” Men call it “gut feeling.” It is

our most complex cognitive function.

FANGIO DECISIONS• The Italian Grand Prix, Monza, 1953. Alberto

Ascari and Nino “Dr. Giuseppe” Farina were leading Juan Manuel Fangio to the finish line on the last lap when they were both forced off their line while attempting to pass a slower driver. As a result both crashed. Juan Fangio, racing just behind, was immediately able to avoid both crashing cars and go on to win the race.

• The disastrous Le Mans race of 1955. Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes crashed, from behind, into Lance Macklin’s Austin-Healey and killed 85 spectators. Juan Fangio, close behind Levegh, was able to drive through the melee to safety.

• The Monte Carlo Grand Prix of 1957. On the second lap, with all cars still bunched together, Stirling Moss, the leader, crashed into a barrier. Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins, following close behind, were caught up in the incident. Even though the road was getting blocked as the cars piled up one after another, Fangio, again managed to steer his Maserati clear and to victory.

Some may liken these examples to luck or superior eyesight. If so, reaction time and great reflexes could easily become the desirable skills. But, a reflex comes in response to unexpected situations.

Fangio not only knew how his own car was going to react, it was as if he was able to foresee what other drivers would do. If they went into a corner a little too fast or off their normal line, he was prepared for the outcome. Fangio’s decisions were not based on reflex.

Incidents do not occur all at once. To move beyond the mere mechanics of operating a vehicle in a complex environment, a driver must foresee pit falls.

Numerous studies have shown great drivers do not typically have faster reflexes than other drivers. Then how is it that, Champion Drivers seem to have “all the time in the world” when there car is at the limit?

The answer. Anticipation. You think you cannot predict what another might

do? But, you can. Your own experience makes you an expert. Racing drivers speak to one another by the lines they take. Distinct movements and changes in a line telegraph intent, concentration, and competence.

PRACTICEPractice is for optimizing memory of motion, to

Page 19: March 2013 - ARPCAarpca.com/files/documents/rundschau/2013/Rundschau_2013_03.pdfevent. Also in April is our Highway Clean-Up [also April 13] and our first club event to the Flight

increase the base of knowledge and experience from which driver response sets are chosen. Practice driving off-line, brake early, brake late, place turn-ins, apexes and track-out target points both early and late. Knowledge grows exponentially. The more we know, the greater our ability to learn, and the faster we expand our knowledge base.

Lesser skilled drivers have fewer choices of appropriate response sets. Quicker driver’s have a more complete memory of motion to assess, anticipate problems and select the appropriate response. Progressing, things get quicker and more difficult. With progress to higher skill levels, drivers need to change strategies to compensate for their increased skills and knowledge.

Driving at speed can be a self-created emergency. Less optimized decisions require as much physical and emotional strength as necessary to continually snatch oneself back from disaster time after time.

When an optimum decision is selected, and applied to a situation, a driver can afford extra time in the response sequence before the need to make further corrections. There will be less need to rush and more time to choose when to rush.

Anticipation translates laws of speed back into their original language, which is thought. A concept always precedes a driver’s action. If the concept is flawed the execution will always be flawed. Your line, after all, is merely your current thought. It can be changed!

WHAT IS A LINEEveryone has a line; it is your personal view of

seeing your way through the course. Practice enables

a driver to decide where to place the car, change gears, brake, turn-in and accelerate. These elements determine where confidence and risk management come together to shape the line. No matter what line you use, good throttle control makes it work.

A line is an imagined route defined by comfort: familiarity, predictability, certainty. It is a flow pattern for continuously lapping a course in smooth, seamless progression. There are many choices, but whatever the choice, it must follow this simple rule: At turn-in, a good line allows continuous incremental increase to full throttle, without lifting, until it is necessary to slow for the next turn.

Building a line is one thing, learning to use it is quite another. No matter your route, lap after lap; it must be consistent, even if parts are consistently wrong. Consistency is the footing from which to resolve the good from the bad.

A line can be as basic as separate gyrations connecting straights. Or, it can be a well choreographed and improvised dance performed on the edge of adhesion, with each turn precisely adjusted to balance every change. And, that is when the line becomes a combination of improvisation, (controlled by anticipation), and balance, (controlled by reflex); a blend of “Art” and “Science”-- where magic happens.

Driving at speed creates small incremental erosion of the line that is aggravated by competition. Uncorrected, these cascading changes never reverse themselves. The line is a path - a path that provides its own road map to the quickest way back from deviation. But, more importantly, the line provides an ability to anticipate.
