CBI is pleased to welcome E.J. Dionne, Jr. as the 2013 Oseran Family Lecturer. Mr. Dionne is a long-time op-ed columnist for The Washington Post, writing twice a week on national politics and policy. He is a University Professor at Georgetown University and a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. Dionne has been a frequent commentator on politics for National Public

Radio, ABC’s “This Week,” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” His book “Why Americans Hate Politics” (1991) won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and was a National Book Award nominee. His most recent book is “Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith & Politics After the Religious Right” (2008).

The Oseran Family Fund was established in 2008 to provide annual lectures with a socially responsible Jewish theme. Past lecturers have included US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, and author and national correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg.

A Home for the Holidays is Congregation Beth Israel’s program for matching members with a Seder. Please contact Tracy in the CBI office at (503) 222-1069 before March 11th so that we can do our best to match hosts with guests. All participants will be contacted on or before March 18th.

Chag Sameach Pesach! Happy Passover!This year, Passover begins at sundown on Monday, March 25th, and the first Seder will take place in Jewish homes all around the world on that evening. A time for family and friends to gather and retell the Exodus story, along with your own personal stories, Passover is a favorite holiday for many. The food – symbolic, elaborate, and wonderful – is steeped in traditions.

You may be hosting or attending a Seder. Either way, let this year’s Passover experience be a time to get to know the people around your table. Freedom from the enslavement of constant electronic communication – perhaps that can be our community focus for this Passover! See page 1 for information on our Home for the Holidays match-up program. Whether this is your first Passover Seder or your 100th, we hope that you will explore and create new traditions with family and friends along with your many favorite family traditions. The URJ website has thoughtful information, and the web has a plethora of traditions, customs, recipes, and “how-tos.” A few new traditions:

@ Donate your chumitz (all items not kosher for Passover) to a food pantry, CBI’s barrels, or your favorite organization for feeding the hungry.

@ Invite someone new who is in need of community to share in your Seder celebration.

@ Create a Passover gift basket or care package filled with homemade cakes, candies, dried fruits, a special jar of charoset, matzoh, and assorted wines or grape juice for a homebound friend or family unable to join a Seder.

May this Passover infuse your life with joyful appreciation for our common miraculous history and the deep significance we find in the retelling of our own story year by year.

Matzoh Roca Favorite Passover Recipe from Portland P’Nosh WRJ/BIS Cookbook

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

INGREDIENTSApproximately 3 – 4 pieces of matzoh1 cup unsalted butter1 cup brown sugar12 ounces chocolate chips1 cup chopped almonds, or nuts of your choice

DIRECTIONS Cover cookie sheet with foil, dull side up. Grease foil. Lay matzoh to cover foil, in one layer. Boil butter and brown sugar for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Spread mixture over matzoh and then bake for 5 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove cookie sheet from the oven and spread chocolate chips evenly over the matzoh. Return to the oven for another 30 – 60 seconds. Remove from the oven and spread the melted chocolate evenly. Sprinkle with nuts and let cool. Freeze for 1 hour, then break into pieces. Store in an airtight container. May be frozen.

Sacred Drama By Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana

The Passover seder is often referred to as a “sacred drama” – a ritualized enactment of our central story of Liberation leading to Redemption. Although the story we tell at the seder only hints at it, we know how it continues: Redemption leads to Revelation and the eventual Return to our homeland. We might think of them as parts of a trilogy. The seder is our telling of “Episode I.”

This “sacred drama” is how we tell and retell our story. It places us into the role of one who experienced history in the making. We should feel as if we were personally freed through G-d’s miraculous intervention.

I have recently been reminded of how we Jews create these dramatic ritual experiences. In the past few weeks, I have been invited to be a consultant on two theatrical productions with Jewish contexts: Portland Center Stage’s production of The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez and Lincoln High School’s production of A Dybbuk adapted by Tony Kushner from an S. Ansky tale.

For these productions, my role has been to help explain the Jewish settings and rituals. The Whipping Man takes place in a Jewish home in Richmond, VA just after the Civil War and features a Passover seder led by emancipated slaves. A Dybbuk takes place in a 19th century Polish shtetl and features demon possession and other Jewish superstitions.

Working with these theatre companies – one professional, one high school – reminds me of the power of drama to explore themes and ideas which we might not normally confront. That is the Passover seder, the drama all Jews participate in creating.

We are all actors – maybe reenactors – in our people’s “sacred drama.” This Passover, may your seder open to you new themes, ideas, and involvement.

Our Leadership

Portland Center Stage is offering a special discount on their production of The Whipping Man for all CBI members. The play takes place in a Jewish home in Richmond, Virginia, just after the end of the Civil War. There are many Jewish themes, including the meaning of Passover to newly emancipated slaves.

Rabbi Cahana was invited to consult with the actors and director during the production. In return they have made this discount available.

Clergy in the Community@ On February 28, Rabbi Joseph participated in an interfaith panel titled “The Roots of Concern with Poverty, Hunger, Homelessness and Health Care” as part of the Oregon Interfaith Advocacy Day in Salem, Oregon.

@ From March 3-6, Rabbi Joseph will be in

Long Beach, California to participate in the national rabbinic convention of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). Rabbi Richard Block will be installed as the new national president of the CCAR, and Rabbi Joseph has been asked to read Torah for his installation service. Rabbi Joseph is also on the core team for Rabbis Organizing Rabbis: CCAR Justice and Peace Committee and will lead convention rabbis in a justice campaign.

@ Rabbi Cahana and Civil Rights Attorney Ron Silver will be speaking at a presentation entitled “Black/Jewish Relations: Civil Rights and Beyond.” This event is presented by Portland State University’s Black Studies Department and the Jewish Student Union on Thursday, March 7, from 12:00-1:30 PM in PSU’s Smith Memorial Student Union.

Developing CBI by Jenat Levison FeldmanDevelopment Director This year’s TOT was all about passion, and I am truly always thankful for passionate people. Knowing that it takes a village, please join me in recognizing those individuals who feel passionately about CBI and used that passion to create a truly delicious and delightful Taste of Temple.

Val Fishman, a relative newcomer to our congregation, led the way by coordinating and, in many cases, recruiting the incredible chefs who graciously participated. While every committee member wore a variety of hats, some of those helping her recruit this amazing array of talent were Mindy Becker and Greg Jones, Kelly Post-Lewis, Lorraine Rose, Sara Rosenbaum, and Michelle Tonkin.

Special kudos go to Joey Fishman, who quickly agreed to oversee revenue opportunities. While he worked diligently, he also appreciated the importance of teamwork and enlisted others to help lead the way. Sabrina Stein proved to be auction coordinator extraordinaire, soliciting many and cataloging all of the incredible donations that became a part of our auction baskets. Sabrina worked with Jill Mitchell, Kathleen Doctor, and Robin McCoy to compile that impressive list of donors.

House Parties were a huge focus of this year’s plan, as TOT wants our members to keeping meeting each other and connecting throughout the year. While Mel Birge recruited the generous hosts, he and Janet Morgan worked together “selling” the parties weeks in advance so that those who were unable to attend on February 10th could participate in the fun to follow. Sandy Nemer got the ball rolling early by branding this year’s TOT look.

Robin Skarstad knows talent, and we thank her for engaging our jazz duo. Setting up is always a party in itself. Donna and Dennis McFall and Paula Reed joined other committee members to be sure every detail was handled.

And of course our tireless staff kept everything on track from start to finish. Tracy Alifanz personalized registration; Vicki Greif kept everyone up to date as we processed the many guests; Jim Baldwin ensured that the registration process was quick and simple from start to finish; Jemi Mansfield organized childcare and many other details; and the multi-talented Dara Docherty handled with amazing grace the inordinate number of pieces required to produce the intricate TOT puzzle. Craig Paton and Drew Christensen were readily available to assist with set-up and logistics, and Sydney Baer patiently answered questions – whether mundane or important – with attention to every detail. Cantor Cahana always knows the right notes to hit, Rabbi Cahana continually helps set the mood, Ben Sandler and Arthur Steinhorn ensure our sound, and Rabbi Joseph lends an endless amount of support and appreciation.

There are many more to thank, including but not limited to the talented chefs, brewers and distillers. Please pay them back by supporting their restaurants and products. Their participation was entirely at their own expense. A special thanks also goes to Development Chair Linda Georges, who helped conceive, implement, and support the original Taste of Temple from the get-go.

Everything is better with great leaders – people passionate, committed, and willing to be involved at every level – to make this kind of magic happen. From committee recruitment to soliciting sponsors, from enlisting those providing food and drink to auction donations, no task was too large or too small for our amazingly talented and passionate leaders. For Ali and Judah Garfinkle and Tiffany and David Goldwyn, it became a transformative experience. In their own words, they call it epic. It is an honor and a pleasure to engage with so much talent and passion.

It is truly amazing how far passion can take you. That’s what’s developing at CBI.

Don’t call me Bubbe! By Sydney A. BaerExecutive Director

It is with the greatest of joy that we share the news of the birth of our first grandchild. Our grandson, Lyle Emmett Baer, was born January 31st to our son Louis and his wife Geryl Baer. They live just outside of Washington, DC. We were able to fly back to meet our grandson and share the celebration of his Bris and his naming. His Hebrew name is Levi Matan, and the first letters of both names honor both sets of grandmothers. We are thrilled to join this most special club and will try not to be too obnoxious! I have taken a survey and researched on the internet, but I’m still working on my “grandma” name. It was hard to say l’hitraot, but we know that we will return again soon. And thank goodness for technology – we can “FaceTime” and more to watch our precious Lyle grow in between visits.

As we are putting this issue together, many of us are already thinking about Pesach: the delicious and special foods, celebrating with families, and fun traditions. I am including a favorite family Passover dessert which belonged to my aunt that I have been making for years, have shared with many, and which always gets rave reviews.

He is the son of David and Amy McFeeters-Krone and the older brother of Abigail, Grant, and Rachel. Guy attends da Vinci Arts Middle School. The Ronald McDonald House is the focus of his Mitzvah Project. The Ronald McDonald House serves

the families of children being treated at Portland-area hospitals. Any family who lives more than 60 miles from the hospital can stay. RMH provides a comfortable, private, homey setting plus meals and activities, all located close to the hospital so families can be near to each other. Guy and his family are preparing three monthly meals at Portland’s Ronald McDonald House East, which is located near The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel and the Kartini Clinic in North Portland and is able to accommodate 24 families per night. www.rmhcoregon.org/volunteer

Tanta Aggie’s Almond CakeYields 8 servings

INGREDIENTS3 eggs, lightly beaten1-8 oz. can almond paste (I like the Solo brand)3/4 cup granulated sugar½ cup unsalted butter (softened)¼ c. matzo meal/flour (can be made with ¼ c. flour at other times of the year)

DIRECTIONS Grease & flour with matzo meal an 8” round cake pan.In the large mixing bowl, beat 1 egg, almond paste & sugar. Beat in the remaining eggs. Add the butter and beat until creamed. Stir in the matzo meal until blended. Pour into prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 – 50 minutes

This cake can be drizzled with raspberry sauce. I often garnish the plate with fresh raspberries & mint – very pretty!

Special thanks go to Andy, Solomon, and Benjamin Olshin for conceiving and executing our Soup Sac Program, and to Rabbi Joseph and Joanie Rosenbaum, the other members of our planning task force. We also thank Rabbi Cahana for creating this Day of Service for the congregation and Sydney Baer for her invaluable help and guidance.

We greatly appreciate the participation of our congregants and friends in this experiment, which we all agree was a terrific project. We hope to continue Soup Sac days on a regular basis. We are heartened by the commitment of our congregants and friends to try to improve the condition of those less fortunate.

Good Deeds Day is on March 10thJoin the Portland community in doing a good deed on Sunday, March 10th. It will be a great day to volunteer with family and friends throughout the Jewish community. The Soup Sac program will be CBI’s service project and you can bring soup or cookies, make sandwiches, pack sacs, and/or make deliveries to those in need of a substantial meal. This is a terrific family event, and we hope you will join us on the 10th.

If so, please come to an informational meeting about how we can help reach the thousands of school children who have been so impacted by hearing the stories of Holocaust survivors. Sadly, our local Holocaust survivors will not be able to continue their instrumental role in telling the stories of their lives. It is our mission as children and grandchildren of survivors to help fill their eventual voids. The goal of this meeting is to explain the need and how you can assist in meeting the need of the many requests for speakers received by the OHRC. We need you, as you carry the legacy of a second generation survivor!

Child Trafficking in Portland Sunday, March 3, 10:00 AMGoodman Hall

WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood presents a forum on “Child Trafficking in Portland.” Guest speakers will include U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Deputy Keith Bickford of OATH (Oregonians Against Human Trafficking), and others involved in this battle.

Think that trafficking only happens somewhere else? Think again. According to OATH, “A common misconception about human trafficking is that it only happens abroad. In reality, it is happening here, in the United States and in Oregon.”

Those “walking the track” on Portland’s 82nd Avenue are often children exploited in their hometown.

Join us, learn with us, and advocate with us to push for maximum punishment for traffickers and rehabilitation centers for victims.

This program is free of charge and open to the entire community.
