A record number of members – 409 – turned out for the Oregon Track Club Annual Meeting and Din-ner on February 12.

Past OTC President Bill Kelly pre-sided, as newly elected president Erin Regali was unable to attend due to illness.

Backed up by an energetic recap video of OTC’s events, Bill outlined many of the club’s achievements during 2012 – 28% increase in mem-bership, currently over 2,500; distribution of 25,000 Runner’s Maps; 10,000 hours of volunteer officiating, second largest Butte to Butte Race ever, over $20,000 toward maintenance of Pre’s Trail – to name a few.

The OTC Board of Directors was elected by the membership and included 40 return-ing members and four new members (fea-tured elsewhere in this newsletter). Officers were introduced: Erin Regali, President, Kim McManus, Vice Presi-dent; Barbara Kousky, Secretary; Trae Rich-ardson, Treasurer, Shivaun Black, Mas-ters President; and Bill Kelly, Past Presi-dent.

The Treasurer’s report showed the club with a net surplus of $10,653 for 2012, as well as strong reserves. $5,000 of our sur-

plus in 2012 can be attributed to the in-crease in membership, and to increased merchandise sales.

Vin Lananna, President of TrackTown USA, thanked OTC officials and volunteers, whom he described as the heart and soul of track and field in our community. Vin gave an overview of the TrackTown structure and highlighted the many successes in 2012.

Robert Johnson, Head Coach of the UO Team was introduced by Vin. Coach John-son presented his staff and the UO athletes in attendance and gave an outlook for the women’s and men’s teams in 2013.

Oregon Track Club takes great pride in Pre's Trail and the value it brings to our community of runners and walkers. For the last few years a matching donation program instituted by a generous donor has worked very well to help maintain and improve this great trail. The club is so very appreciative of this donation and the ability it provides to double our mon-ey when others in the community step up to match with their pledges.

It is our goal to steadfastly continue to make people aware of how vital the trail is to our community. The club recognizes the historic, scenic, economic and per-sonal health benefits this trail provides. As we endeavor to raise more funds and increase awareness of the matching do-nation program, our goal of maintaining this valued landmark for today's popula-tion and future generations continues. Please join us in this worthy effort. Go to www.oregontrackclub.org and click Friends of Pre's Trail to add your contri-bution to this enduring legacy.

Pre’s Trail... A Community Collaboration

This year’s recip-ient of The Reske Award, named af-ter Richard and Melanie Reske, who volunteered thou-sands of hours to the Oregon Track Club, is Cathie Twomey Bellamy.

Cathie volunteers extensively in the track and field community. She is well-known for skillfully coordinating the awards ceremonies for the major events at Hayward Field including the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, the 2009 and 2011 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Champion-ships, and the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Cham-pionships.

A long-time member of the OTC Board of Directors, Cathie has served on many OTC committees. Currently she is a member of the following committees; Runners’ Out-reach, Grass Roots Grants, Youth, Nomi-nating, and the Prefontaine Trail Commit-tee. Cathie is also a board member of The Prefontaine Classic, The Eugene Mara-thon, and the newly formed Team Run Eugene (a post collegiate sub-elite club).

Cathie has coached athletes at all levels, including 14 years at Marist High School. Her involvement at the open and masters level is shown in her formation and coaching of the Eugene Running Club.

Cathie’s illustrious career took her from being a state champion in high school to an All-American in college and qualifying for four Olympic Trials (’76 – ’88). She was the indoor national champion in the mile and set the world best at 20k in 1982. She was a member of the gold-medal U.S. team

in the IAAF World Cross Country Champi-onships in 1984 and was a member of the U.S. Marathon team in the IAAF Outdoor World Championships in 1987.

Cathie accepted the award in honor of Chris Brathwaite, whom she used to run with on Pre’s Trail almost daily. Chris, a former UO runner, was killed by a sniper while running on the trail on November 12, 1984.

by Erin Regali, OTC PresidentThe 2013 Annual

Meeting was a huge success with over 400 people attending this fantastic evening. Our club was able to cel-ebrate so many won-derful activities past and present that we are involved with. The work of the board and committees over the last year was rewarded with such a large turnout of our annual meeting, and with this we are energized to make even more progress in 2013!

Our club has increased its membership in the last year from 1800-2500 members which is truly amazing. We believe that Oregon Track Club deserves a strong base of track and field fans, competitors, road runners, walkers and business support-ers. All together we are able to support and promote our TrackTown community.

Membership satisfaction is always an important goal of our organization. The Hospitality committee, chaired by Ed Kousky, is a very active committee throughout the year. The committee is responsible for our Annual Meeting in February, wonderful meals for our offi-cials at the University of Oregon Meets,

hosting member appreciation events at Hayward Field as well as cooking and providing meals at events such as Butte to Butte & Hayward Classic. The commit-tee always provides a delicious healthy meal with a smile to all of our wonderful volunteers. I wish to express my thanks to this great committee of committed volunteers – a happy volunteer produces great results.

done. Members were encouraged to bring new fans to the NCAA Championships. The staff is currently very busy with planning for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Champion-ships, where we will host 1,800 athletes from 180 countries.

A Celebration of 40 Years of the Butte to Butte was the featured presentation by William Wyckoff, assisted by James Houghton. William gave a very entertaining monologue and slide show featuring pho-tos from the inaugural “Storm the Butte” in 1974 to the present day Aquafina Butte to Butte. Photos featured various tee shirt designs, early pace cars, and runners and their families throughout the years.

Many special events are planned for this year’s Butte to Butte, beginning with a promotional kick-off forty days out from July 4th. Tom Jordan and Barbara Kousky were recognized with a commemorative plaque for their 13 years as Directors of the Butte to Butte. The Butte to Butte road race is an OTC event.

The Michael Radliff Trio provided music during the buffet dinner. Special thanks to members of the Hospitality Commit-tee and to the many other volunteers who assisted in making the evening a success.

by Vin LanannaThe passion and energy that filled the room at the OTC An-

nual Dinner is emblematic of the spirit that the TrackTown USA office intends to showcase to the rest of the country and the world. During the dinner, we celebrated our commu-nity’s storied history of accomplished athletes and teams, outstanding events and unparalleled volunteerism. We looked ahead at opportunities to support the Oregon and OTC Elite teams, to host world-class events and to be a leader in the sport in 2013 and beyond.

In order for TrackTown USA to become the standard of excel-lence in the sport we are focusing our efforts on five major goals.

Inspire the next generation: We will focus on youth as a key audience for everything that we do. We want to engage them with the technology they use, foster connections with ath-letes and turn them into lifelong fans of the sport. The Oregon Track Club and the City of Eugene Recreation Department have set the standard for All-Comers meets, creative youth initiatives and programming at the home meets. We want oth-er communities to follow the lead set by this community and we’ll do our part to extend the visibility of those programs.

Host premier events: We will seek innovative ways to en-gage athletes, fans and broadcast audiences as we host some of the most exciting events in the world. New technologies will enable us to extend the Hayward Field experience be-yond the footprint of the grandstands, and we look forward to demonstrating some of these new ideas at this spring’s NCAA Championships. We have built strong partnerships with the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Track & Field, the NCAA and the IAAF, and we look forward to working together with them to extend the reach of the sport.

Build world-class facilities: The spirit and magic of Hayward Field is alive and well. However, we can do more to reward fans who support the sport by improving the amenities at the world’s most iconic stadium. We have ambitious ideas on how to renovate the venue and provide a world-class experience for athletes, fans and broadcasters.

Elevate the University of Oregon men’s and women’s track and field teams: Our organization will help the Oregon coach-ing staff and teams in their quest to be the most dominant

program in NCAA history, allowing the men’s and women’s teams to be in a position to win Pac-12 and NCAA titles in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.

Establish Oregon Track Club Elite as the home for post-collegiate ath-letes: We will help to create the most exciting and promising environment for post-collegiate athletes and support Mark Rowland and his staff as he develops local heroes who rep-resent our community both nationally and internationally.

We have assembled a motivated staff to bring together our partners and put together plans to amplify the work of our community and the Oregon Track Club. We will celebrate and honor our history as we look for ways to innovate and perform at an even higher level. We want to share the spirit of Track-Town USA with the world, and make it accessible to all and sustainable over time.

We are excited for our mission and working with you as we strive to achieve our ambitious goals.

Get ready to fly. Olympic pole vault gold medalist Renaud Lavil-lenie is ready to take the Prefontaine Classic to new heights.

Lavillenie, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, will make his first-ever trip to Hayward Field to compete in the 39th annual Oregon Track Club Prefontaine Classic on June 1st. Joining him will be silver medalist Bjorn Otto and bronze medalist Raphael Holz-deppe, giving the Eugene Samsung Diamond League meet a clean sweep of the London medal winners.

Lavillenie is the dominant vaulter on the planet. He owns a best of 19-9.5 (6.03) and has been ranked No. 1 in the world the last three years by Track & Field News, a streak last recorded by the legendary world record holder Sergey Bubka, who did it seven times (1991-97). At only 26 years of age, Lavillenie expects his best years are still to come, and vault experts consider him the best bet to join Bubka as the only men to clear 20-feet in the event.

Otto is another member of the 6-meter club (19-8.25 / 6.01). At 35 years old, the German is the oldest vaulter in the Pre field. Countryman Holzdeppe, just 23, was a 2008 Olympian at age 19 and has a best of 19-4.75 (5.91). For Lavillienie, Otto, and Holz-

deppe, this will be their first visit to historic Hayward Field. The only Pre Classic entrant familiar with the Eugene facility

is American record holder Brad Walker, a 2-time Olympian. Three of Walker’s most memorable jumps came at Hayward Field, in-cluding his victories at the 2012 U.S Olympic Trials and 2009 U.S. national championships. But Walker still relishes his clearance of 19-9.75 (6.04) at the 2008 Pre Classic, the American record that still stands. It also still stands as the Pre Classic and Hay-ward Field records, as well as the highest that anyone has ever vaulted in the U.S.

Three additional world-ranked Olympians are confirmed for the Pre Classic field – Malte Mohr of Germany, Steve Lewis of Great Britain, and Konstantinos Filippidis of Greece. Mohr was ranked No. 3 in the world by Track & Field News for 2012, while Lewis was ranked No. 4, and Filippidis No. 6. In the All-Athletics.com rank-ings, which include 2013 marks, the Pre Classic field boasts the Nos. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 ranked athletes in the world.

Tickets for the 39th annual edition of the Prefontaine Classic, to be held May 31-June 1 at Hayward Field in Eugene, OR, are on sale at www.preclassic.com or call 1-800-WEBFOOT.
