Billy’s days are tinged in darkness. His dad is distant. His mother is dead, and his grandmother hoards moldy food in strange places. His only outlet seems to be the boxing class Dad pays for, but it isn’t quite doing the trick. Then boxing leads to ballet, and suddenly, if slowly, brightness breaks through the gloom.

Showing him how to shine is the hard-headed, demanding and sharp-tongued Mrs. Wilkinson (played by

Leah Hocking). The ballet teacher has a compassionate side, which she doesn’t let it out easily. Their meeting represents a second chance for both.

Billy Elliot works, Hocking says, because it’s universal. And because “there is probably nothing better than seeing a kid dance his heart out on a stage.”

Billy Elliot the Musical was inspired by the 2000 film about a poor English boy whose accidental love of ballet

It’s 1984 when we meet Billy Elliot, the 11-year-old son and younger brother of striking coal miners in the industrial,

working-class northeast section of England. The powerful miners’ union is challenging iron-fisted Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her conservative ethos. It will not be a pretty fight. And Britain will never be the same.

helps him overcome sexual stereotypes, his father’s disapproval and the dead-end poverty of his coal-mining town. It debuted in London in 2005 and opened on Broadway in 2008. The Broadway version closed Jan. 8; this is its first stop in Atlanta.

The show won 10 Tony Awards in 2009, including best musical. Among those in the original cast: Hocking, who played Billy’s Dead Mum. It was bittersweet for the one-time Michigander. By night, she was part of a colossal Broadway hit. By day she cared for her husband, Jim L’Cuyer, who was dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“Work was a sanctuary,” she says of the time. “A place to go to escape the reality of my life.”

This tour, she says, “is us coming out the other side.”

That “us” includes Hocking, her 10-year-old daughter, Mabel, and their dog, Lulu, a Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix. Wherever they go, it’s together, be it Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Los Angeles or Atlanta.

“There’s a major learning curve there,” she says of their first time on the road. “How much stuff to bring with you. Dealing with the daughter and the dog and the nanny. It’s enough to make you go take a nap.”

Hocking has a ready sense of humor, as if you couldn’t tell. And a husky laugh. In fact, she once skewered Kathleen Turner in a production of Forbidden Broadway, the musical revue

“I always had great chorus teachers in grade school, junior high, high school. It was my ‘church,’ my community. It was just where I belonged.” — Leah Hocking

franchise that sends up stage icons past and present. She’s also done Merman, Mary Martin and Bernadette Peters.

Her first go at theater came at age 4 or 5. Her mother designed the costumes for a church production of Herod’s Song, translated from the German, no less. Leah carried the star behind the magi.

“I always wanted to be an actor,” she says. “I always had great chorus teachers in grade school, junior high, high school. It was my ‘church,’ my community. It was just where I belonged.”

She’s been in the original Broadway casts of All Shook Up, Dance of the Vampires, The Wild Party and Jekyll & Hyde. She’s also been in Mamma Mia! (as Donna Sheridan), Hairspray (as the evil Velma Von Tussle), Grease (as Marty) and Guys and Dolls (as Miss Sarah Brown). And like any self-respecting New York stage actor, she’s turned up on “Law & Order.” She found the dead body on the driving range in an episode that opened at Chelsea Pier.

Hocking’s first professional job was in summer stock in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. In A Chorus Line, she says. Or maybe Company, in which she played Joanne, the older, boozy, excessively frank character made infamous by Elaine Stritch.

Hocking played Joanne twice before she turned 25. “I was a little more character-y when I was younger,” she says, dryly. It was her “sexpots tramps and whores” phase. “Now I’m into moms.”

That’s true both onstage, with Billy, and offstage, with Mabel. Hocking starts each day by taking Mabel, who

studies with the 20 kids in the cast, to school. Then the glamour of life on tour kicks in and she’s either sleeping, resting (she yells a lot onstage) or looking for places to do laundry and get food.

Hocking was raised by an artist and a stoic Finn, so sentimentality “was not in the forefront of our upbringing,” she says with another husky laugh. “It serves me well for Mrs. Wilkinson, and the show, because the Brits are not sentimental, and the show is definitely not sentimental.”

Ah, but Mrs. Wilkinson does have a bit of leftover ambition in her bones. Her dream of being a professional dancer can still come true, through Billy. It’s in this world of shared passion that they both soar.

One of the unique sounds evoked by the Billy Elliot Orchestra is that of the English brass band. Usually comprised of Cornets, Flugelhorns, Tenor Horns, Euphoniums, and Tubas, these musical ensembles originated as work bands and were sponsored by (and long identified with) various industrial concerns and coal mines. The Easington Colliery Band was founded in 1913. Brass players with band experience were encouraged by management to come from the west of Durham to work at the colliery and play in the band, which, despite the closure of the coal mining operations in 1993, continues to perform to this day. The band is still based in the old colliery pay office. The building is the last remaining evidence of the pit.

In 1984, the British National Union of Mineworkers (the NUM) went on strike to save the coal industry from the threatened closures of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was

politically opposed to state-owned industry and determined to crush the unions. The strike went on for one year. The miners’ families had to survive on handouts from other working people who supported their stand. But by employing riot police to intimidate their communities and importing coal from Eastern Europe, the Conservative government broke the unions. Over the subsequent 10 years, the entire industry was dismantled. The story of Billy Elliot takes place in the coal fields of Northern England, where mining had been the major employer for hundreds of years. In 1984 more than 300,000 men worked in the mining industry; today there are less than 1,000. More than 98 percent of the coal used for British energy is now imported from abroad.

It’s slightly after 10 a.m. on a Friday, and a white-haired man beyond middle-age is in the midst of a

workout. He’s stretching muscles, toes, joints and ligaments at a barre, the kind for dance, not drinks.

Ed, as the instructor calls him, wears a long-sleeved black T-shirt, tights and slip-on shoes. He’s in a sterile room, lit by fluorescents and moving to classical

music played out by an accompanist. Ed is in ballet class, advanced ballet, because, like his classmates, he’s found a passion.

The Atlanta Ballet Dance Centre, or ABCD as it’s called, welcomes all kinds of students without dance backgrounds or with limited experience to its introductory ballet classes. The Centre offers adult classes (age 16 and up) in various genres at multiple levels and skill sets, from beginner to advanced. You can take ballet, world dance, hip-hop, modern, pointe, jazz, tap, and even yoga and Pilates. (Details: atlantaballet.com or 404.873.5811, Ext. 310.

In her advanced ballet class, instructor Carol Szkutek asks if her students “feel that incredible stretch” between barre combinations, then fluidly marks a combination in her sneakers. Her students range in age from their 20s to late 60s and vary in skill. Nearly half are men. “They are all centered,” Szkutek (pronounced CUE-tek) says, indicating with her fingers the dancers’ upright torsos, vertically correct through each combination they perform.

“1, 2, 3-2, 2, 3-3, 2, 3...,” Szkutek booms as they dance. She knows them, their training, technique levels and abilities. Some have been with her for decades. They are lawyers, ex-architects, teachers, restaurant workers, a model. Nancy Lindebaum is among them.

Lindebaum, a special education teacher who owns a tutoring service, found ballet fairly early.

“My love of movement is so intense,” says Lindebaum, almost 60. She has danced through pregnancies, injury and physical therapy. “I celebrate my age in a ballet class.” That’s because, she says,

it makes her feel young and beautiful.Lindebaum did modern dance in

the 1970s, and then musical theater. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees followed, and yet ballet persisted in her life. She sees herself as a nontraditional ballet student even though she’s been dancing for more than 50 years. “I didn’t have the physical facility to be great as a dancer,” she notes. For her, “Ballet was the passion, recreation, the exercise.”

And a lifeline. “I want to dance forever,” she says. “I hope.”

It’s hard to believe that darkness used to descend here by 2 p.m. — the smoke produced by factories was that thick. Today, no haze obscures the beauty of the three rivers that flow through the city or the majestic cliffs of Mount Washington, which overlooks downtown. Walking tours through former factory slums highlight ethnic enclaves that have developed considerable cultural and culinary delights. And sports arenas rub shoulders with science museums, each commanding enthusiastic audiences.

As is common in industrial towns, the labor of immigrants and blue collar

workers created the riches that magnates like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick enjoyed. But Pittsburgh’s wealthy weren’t content to sit on their laurels. It can be argued that they invented corporate philanthropy, investing millions of dollars to build museums

From looking like “hell with the lid off” to being touted as one of the 20 must-see destinations in the world by national

geographic traveler, Pittsburgh has come a long way in the past century. Its reinvention is the municipal equivalent of a cinderella story. and it illustrates the deep, often ignored connection, between art and industry.

Heinz Field Stadium and the Carnegie Science Center

and libraries, colleges and churches. Carnegie, in particular, believed that given the choice, man would always seek to improve himself. So he and his peers provided the rough tools that Pittsburgh’s citizens needed in order to learn, experience and grow.

As a result, there is a no-nonsense approach to art here. There’s nothing precious about it. Perhaps that’s why the city’s most famous artist, Andy Warhol, found such delight in featuring supermarket items, tabloid images and everyday people in his work.

The Andy Warhol Museum is one of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, along with the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Science Center. His inclusion is another sign of how forward-thinking the city’s leadership is; Warhol’s silkscreens are accorded the same respect as Greco-Roman ruins and Renaissance paintings; artifacts from ancient cultures; and interactive science experiments.

Competitive with Carnegie to the end, Henry Clay Frick has his own museum of art, the Frick Collection. The art galleries feature European paintings, sculpture and decorative art. There’s also a house museum and a former stable, which now contains a collection of rare horse buggies and early automobiles.

Another can’t-miss museum is the Mattress Factory, which invites artists to create space-specific installations. Exhibits rotate all the time, but there are some permanent spaces, including a claustrophobic “dots” room created

by Yayoi Kusama, optical illusions designed by James Turrell and a stunning warped-floor aperture created by Sarah Oppenheimer that allows visitors to peer into a neighboring yard.

It’s telling that the city’s most famous food was created for truck drivers on the go. The Primanti Bros. sandwich is quite a meal on wheels, although anyone who can eat it with one hand deserves a standing ovation. Contents include meat, cheese, coleslaw, tomato and fried potatoes. Although there are many locations you can find one now, the original restaurant is located in The Strip district.

The Strip once housed 12,000 factory workers from Ireland, Poland, Germany and Italy. Today, there are only 400 full-time residents, but ethnic eats abound. There’s Larry Labad, the “King of Hummus” who creates authentic Syrian cuisine at his eponymous eatery. Across the street, Parma Sausage has cured meats Italian-style for more than 57 years. At any given time, they have 3,000 prosciutto hanging upstairs.

Wholey’s Fish Market, another family operation, is a short walk from Parma. It’s a popular lunch spot that also happens to sell live and fresh fish. If you’re a bread lover, good luck walking by Mancini’s Bread. If the window displays of bread sculptures don’t get you, the smell of freshly baked loaves will. Inside, the biggest seller is the pepperoni roll, which looks small but contains a pound of dough and 21 pepperonis each. On game days, they sell more than 1,000.

S&D Polish Deli not only offers treats from the old country, it has a general store filled with Polish chocolates and other food items that immigrants might miss. For dessert, head to Enrico’s Bakery, known for its biscotti.

Burgh Bits and Bites offers walking food tours of the Strip, as well as other Pittsburgh neighborhoods like Little Italy in Bloomfield, Mount Washington, Lower Lawrenceville and Brookline. The tours last up to 2.5 hours and cost $35. Don’t eat before embarking, let tour guides know if you have any food allergies and be sure to reserve your place well in advance, because they do sell out. You won’t go home hungry or disappointed.

Before you leave the city, ascend to Mount Washington at least once. There are two inclines that used to transport mill, mine and factory workers, the Duquesne and the Monongahela. The Duquesne Incline is closest to downtown hotels and, at its peak, there is a small history museum that features pictures from when Pittsburgh did belch smoke and smelt on a regular basis. USA Today ranked it one of the Top 10 sites in the world for viewing a cityscape and, by day or night, the view is spectacular. The cost is minimal ($4.50 for adult round trip, $2.20 for children and free for local university students, those under age 5 or older than 65).

You could spend several days exploring the attractions mentioned above, but you’d still be missing much of what the city has to offer. There are bike trails that stretch out into the countryside, park-like college campuses, vibrant performing arts organizations, one-of-a-kind shopping districts, sporting events and some of the most eco-friendly buildings in the world,

like the Phipps Conservatory’s Center for Sustainable Landscapes, which will exceed LEED Platinum standards when it opens this spring. Constructed to mimic the energy efficiency of a flower, the botanical garden’s center will offset all its energy and water needs with self-generated or reused resources. This aptitude for forward-thinking and eco-friendly innovation is why President Obama selected Phipps Conservatory to host a G20 dinner in 2009.
